IN THE ROUGH THE FASHION CRAZE OF UNCUT GEMSTONE JEWELRY

CONSUMERS TODAY ARE OFTEN LOOKING FOR MORE ORGANIC, NATURAL PRODUCTS. This trend is also extending into the jewelry business. Instead of highly polished, perfectly cut stones, uncut gemstones are in high demand. “Uncut, unpolished pieces are all one of a kind,” says Jennifer Velasquez, owner of Castle Rocks and Jewelry. “They’re going to be reflecting your individual style completely. You’re not going to have the same piece as anyone in the world.” Jennifer and her husband, Isidre Baques, a diamond broker, opened the jewelry store in Castle Rock when they realized there weren’t that many choices in town. In December, the store will be celebrating its three-year anniversary.

14

ARTICLE SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY KAYLEIGH GIBB It’s a true family business. Jennifer’s mother, Susie Gibson, works on the floor helping customers when Jennifer is in the back working on custom orders, of which there has been a surge. “We’ve been slammed with personal custom projects,” says Jennifer. “People will come in with a small vision and we have to help their vision come to life.” This is another reason uncut gems are so popular. In addition to the stones being one of a kind, they can also easily be placed into a custom setting. “We work with a couple of different designers that actually specializes in them,” says Jennifer. “One is local designer Robert Michael. He actually mines his own stones, cleans them really well, and puts them in a setting, so they’re as rough as you can possibly get. They’re spectacular. Each one is completely different and that’s the thing I love about all of these.” The store also carries sliced agate. Basically, they take the rock and slice it to be placed into any kind of setting. “Some of our lower priced pieces are just exactly that with a gold foil border, which kind of finishes it,” she says. “Each one is so different because they’re just slices. Some will have the exposed little sparkly pieces, and others will be completely flat and clean. The shapes are really cool when you do that, with an outside border that is very natural looking.” The outside can also be edged with tiny diamonds, so the customer with have an organic center stone with a little added sparkle to make it more refined. “We also have rough diamonds,” says Jennifer. “For example, we have a pair of earrings that have all these gray balls which have been tumbled, so they have a slight facet to them, but the majority of the diamonds are gray and just very cool.”

With rough cut stones, in particular the aquamarine and, of course, the diamonds, the color is very different than when they are cut and perfectly polished. This is what makes them special and unique. Millennials, she says, are really loving rough diamonds over clean, perfect diamonds for their engagement rings. Another unique offering from Castle Rocks and Jewelry is their selection of fossils. “We have some fossils that are completely rough that we have set on a chain and are really interesting,” says Jennifer. “They come from all over. Many that are set as pendants are ammonite because those are very popular and different.” All of these items can be used in earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Necklaces, of course, allow for much bigger pieces to be used. “Just the knowledge that you’re wearing a piece of the earth and a piece of Mother Nature right out of the ground is incredible,” says Jennifer. “There’s very little that goes into it - it’s lightly touched before it goes onto you.” Castle Rocks & Jewelry welcomes people to come in and look around. They are extremely focused on keeping their customers safe. For example, everyone who enters the store must wear a mask, and if someone doesn’t have one,

LINZI PEHLER IS LEARNING A LOT OF NEW LESSONS ABOUT GROWTH FROM ONE OF EARTH’S OLDEST TEACHERS— FLOWERS. What started as a simple yes has turned into a blooming business. The Runaway Florist, Linzi’s fully- functioning mobile flower shop, hit the streets in February. In some ways, The Runaway Florist is just like a regular flower shop. People have the option to create their own bouquets, buy single stems, or purchase pre-made arrangements from a diverse selection of breeds. However, in some ways it is completely different. Not many flower shops wholly exist inside of a striking hot pink van. And no other flower shop is co-piloted by a threelegged Boston Terrier named Wally. The pup has never missed a delivery. Fresh and local are non-negotiable qualities for Linzi’s flowers. She scours local farms and organizations, such as the Colorado Flower Collective in Arvada, multiple times a week.

But something inside of her has grown since the advent of her business. “I always have these ideas, like the flower truck, and then I get self-conscious or nervous and I don’t say yes to opportunities. I have tried to stop doing that,” Linzi says. “There’s all these what-if’s, but I’ve just started to ignore them and say yes.” Every time we say yes to an opportunity, a seed is planted. Through taking risks, intentional care, and hard work, ideas like Linzi’s can blossom. You can learn more about The Runaway Florist’s services and schedule at https://therunawayflorist.com/. Thinking Outside the Bubble ARTICLE HANNAH ECHOLS PHOTOGRAPHY HANNAH ECHOLS AND LUCAS GARLOCK

COLORADO DESIGNER MARIAH HODGES ELECTRIFIES CUSTOMERS WITH UNIQUE FASHION CREATIVITY: THE ABILITY TO TRANSCEND TRADITIONAL IDEAS, RULES, OR PATTERNS TO CREATE MEANINGFUL NEW IDEAS. The definition sounds simple, but in actuality it can be difficult to be “new” in a world rife with tradition and structure. Artist and entrepreneur Mariah Hodges has discovered how to burst the bubble of what’s typical in the fashion world with an equal measure of fun and fearlessness.

36

Castle Rock Lifestyle | September 2020

Mariah walks through a labyrinth of cubicles to get to her studio. It’s a pop of pink in a maze of grey walls, and she’s made the space her own with plenty of sparkles and neon. She created her clothing brand, Electric Bubblegum, immediately after she graduated college and hasn’t looked back since. “Instead of going after the job (I was totally in the process of applying to big companies in New York) I just didn’t feel like it was the right thing to do,” Mariah says. “I had no idea what I was doing, but I felt like my idea deserved a shot.” Her idea? Wearable liquid glitter. The idea was conceived when Mariah was brainstorming concepts for her senior project at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Mariah’s muse was her phone case. The object, filled with light pink heart glitter, continually mesmerized her and she became obsessed with the possibility of putting the same sparkly substance into a raincoat. Fast-forward a few years and Mariah has invented a way to sew liquid glitter into airtight seals, making for a line of captivating dresses, raincoats, keychains, jewelry, and bags. She has channeled every product into her brand, Electric Bubblegum. The name of the brand came from a desire to create something that was girly, but still had an edge to it. And that’s exactly the personality that Mariah’s products embody. Coming in colors like Galactic Mermaid and Atomic Pink, Electric Bubblegum’s products are full of punky pizazz and femininity that captivate people’s vision. Mariah’s products attract one’s sense of touch as well. It has a jelly-like texture that begs to be felt. For example, take the Liquid Filled Glitter Vest. This item, which has multiple bubbles of stylish, squishy goo, is responsible for Mariah’s first official U.S. Patent: US D884,311 S. This piece of paper makes official what anyone who sees Mariah’s clothes can easily figure out— she’s an original. “My design perspective, especially with fashion, is that you should always be creating things that push what is already out there,” Mariah says. While Electric Bubblegum is certainly a modern novelty, Mariah draws inspiration from fashion trends that were popular in the 80s and 90s. She is able to hit a nostalgic note with her consumer base, which is mainly comprised of females anywhere from their teen years to their thirties. Glitter has an even older history. According to the Huffington Post, glitter as we know it was created during the Great Depression by Meadowbrook Inventions. This substance, which has no practical utility, simply exists to make people happy. Now, during yet another time of corporate hardship, Mariah is churning out glitter by the bucketful. Displayed through an increase in sales, people seem to appreciate Mariah’s commitment to create fun, fearless fashion. “I want people to be fearless when they wear my clothes, meaning that they don’t care about what other people think,” Mariah says. “And it’s supposed to be fun. I just want to create things that make people smile.” Electric Bubblegum’s designer and custom products can be bought exclusively at https:// www.electricbubblegumshop.com/. Richie had his personal assistant (his mom) local resident Jessica Northrop explain to us he only had about an hour to show us his latest fall fashion favorites because he had to get back to playing with his little brother, playing ball and take a beauty nap. Richie loves his bed, playing ball, his momma and he is extremely fond of his nick name Chi Chi. You can find The french prince taking long walks, car rides, attending high end fashion shows in the area and snorting his way to the kitchen looking for his favorite snacks. To get all the details and follow Richie and his and adventures check out his handle @thefrenchprinceofcastlepines on Instagram.
