Active New Year, For a New You By Zwade Marshall, MD, MBA
H
appy New Year South Fulton-ers! It’s the beginning of a new year, and I know many of us will set our sights on meeting our New Years’ resolutions. If your number one resolution is to lose weight and become healthier, join the club! And while research shows that only 64% of us will maintain our resolutions through the end of the first month of the New Year and less than half will be maintained through six months, this year can be different!
COSF Residents Must Acquire License for Short-Term Rentals
The key is to keep it simple, realistic and safe. As an interventional pain management physician, I often treat patients for herniated discs and sciatic nerve pain when they over exert themselves in the gym for the first time in years. Many of these patients are fed up with their creeping weight gain and sedentary lifestyle, and desperately want a new lease on life. A setback due to injury is a sure way to derail their hopes for the New Year.
South Fulton Residents interested in making extra money by renting their property on short-term rental websites like AirBnb, will now have to apply for a license through the City.
Below are a few of my personal recommendations to increase your activity in 2018. • Take the opportunity to stand – If you have a sedentary job, you are spending many hours of your day sitting relatively still, and burning very few calories. You would have likely eaten 2-3 times during the work day, and at the end of the day, you may be tired but trying to muster the energy to workout. Consider standing more at work. A standing desk can be a great way to increase your activity and combat the negative effects of a sedentary job. • Ease into your fitness routine – If you have not been in the gym for months start slowly. Set reasonable goals and remember that consistency is more important than short-term gains. The key to maintaining your routine lies in picking an activity that you actually enjoy. If you have never liked running, now is not the time to start. Consider yoga, spin class, or Pilates.
District 2 Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs sponsored the legislation that led to the new rule requiring residents to apply for the license. Residents who rent their property are now required to pay a $200 application fee for a license and obtain an occupation tax certificate. If you are interested in hosting a short-term rental, please learn more by visiting the City’s website at www.cityofsouthfultonga.gov
• Incorporate activity into your daily routine – Researchers have found that brisk walking for 30 minutes daily will trim your waistline, improve your mood and even reduce your risk of heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. So, take your dog on a brisk walk instead of letting the dog out in your yard. Take the stairs at work instead of the elevator, or grab your lunch to go and take a walk during your lunch break.

REP. ROGER BRUCE: THE GODFATHER OF SOUTH FULTON ARTICLE CARLYN POUNDERS
ROGER BRUCE GREW UP WITHOUT A CLOSE FATHER FIGURE, UNTIL ONE DAY AS A MOREHOUSE COLLEGE STUDENT, HE HEARD A BLACK MAN TALKING INSPIRATIONALLY ABOUT THE THINGS THAT COULD BE ACHIEVED IF THE COMMUNITY WORKED TOGETHER. After the meeting, Bruce introduced himself to a young Maynard H. Jackson, Jr., soon to become one of the most prolific Atlanta black mayors in the 1970s. Now, several years later, Bruce is part of building a similar vision of black equity and economic empowerment in the City of South Fulton. A political science major then, Bruce started interning for Jackson’s law firm and eventually got involved in his mayoral campaign. Bruce remarks he’s been involved in politics ever since. Bruce has been an elected state representative since 2003. During this time, the husband and father of three has advocated on behalf of children, the elderly, and other constituents, developing a passion for these groups from his own upbringing in Harlem, New York. Though he says his aunt who raised him was wonderful, he grew up without his parents. Most people he knew were raised in single-parent households, he notes, mentioning how it was common to see families broken up for various reasons. His life’s work has been trying to find a way to make up for what he and those around him didn’t have as children. Consequently, he’s supported legislation for strong families and community resources once stepping into office. Rep. Bruce soon went from facilitating ways to aid people on an individual level to seeing the possibility to forge a type of community wholly supportive of its residents. This would eventually lead to the creation of the City of South Fulton. Rep. Bruce describes how necessary the action was, saying that some of it was born out of the reality that they were being governed by people who did not live in the area. “They didn’t have to live with the consequences of their decisions,” Bruce says. According to Bruce, Atlanta wanted to annex pieces of the area, an action that would have caused schools that serve the areas where he lived and portions of South Fulton to close. “You close the schools in a community, the community goes down,” he says. He didn’t want that to happen. Rep. Bruce adds there was another, more profound reason for cityhood. He wanted to establish a place where if black people wanted to have their own businesses, then they would have someplace to do that. The City of South Fulton exists with a remarkable African American mayor and city council who all live within the city limits. It’s also 90% African American, spanning 170 square miles and with a median family income close to $60K. But the City of South Fulton is just getting started. And Rep. Bruce says he wants to see a place with opportunities to grow and develop generational wealth for families to come. 20

A NEW YEAR IS A BLESSING. The very word “new” implies that there is an “old”—a past which we can break away from and bury, along with every unfruitful memory attached to it. What a blessing it is to reset the clock, write a new narrative, and breathe fresh air into our lives again. As you plan and set your 2020 goals, my encouragement is simply this: be kind. Consider basing your business and personal goals—i.e., your life—on a foundation of kindness. Kindness brings people together and improves our quality of life in the home, community and workplace. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of kindness in this world. You don’t have to look far to see examples of a lack of kindness—e.g., in government, business, social media and entertainment. But what if you challenged yourself to plant one seed of kindness every day in 2020? It could be something easy like letting one driver in front of you during rush hour traffic, holding the door for someone, buying coffee for your team, or writing (not emailing) a brief thank you note. One act of kindness impacts positive transformation. It doesn’t have to cost you anything to be kind, but kindness sure does pay great dividends! When you show kindness to others, people are more likely to do business with you, promote you, engage more, make donations toward your causes and become a loyal supporter of you in general. It is also scientifically proven that kindness reduces workplace stress, which means fewer visits to the doctor or missed days from work—a huge monetary benefit! So, be kind. Make kindness contagious! Clothe yourself in kindness everyday and expect to receive the serendipitous rewards that follow in 2020 and beyond. CONTINUED >

Nick Nelson YOUR PERSONAL BRAND AT SCALE The concept of becoming a brand is nothing new, but more recently with the popularity of social media, it has taken on new heights because we now have the ability to communicate with individuals on a scale like never before. Today our phones are no longer devices used solely for voice communications but are like having a multimedia production studio in your pocket. As we approach the new year, I would like to encourage you to think about your brand and how you can leverage being known for something to help your professional career and/or business. So what is a brand? A brand is two things, and two things only. It’s what you want to be known for and how you want to make people feel. All great brands are known for one thing and make people feel a certain way. As you are building out your list of goals for the year, take these things into consideration if one of your goals is to become a brand. PICK ONE Pick one social media platform to go all in on. This platform primarily is the one in which your target audience uses the most or where you have gotten the most engagement to date. It sure seems like the perfect time, but there will also be days when you’re just not quite feeling it. The holidays are over, the days are shorter and, let’s face it, there’s not really a ton to look forward to until spring sprouts. But, whatever

UNITED WAY OF GREATER ATLANTA IN SOUTH FULTON ANNOUNCES GAINS FOR CHILD WELL-BEING AND DETAILS ON PROGRESS THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS
UNITED WAY OF GREATER ATLANTA IN SOUTH FULTON AND THE SOUTH FULTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESENTED NEW CHILD WELL-BEING DATA CENTERED AROUND COUNTY PRIORITIES, SUCH AS HIGH SCHOOL/COLLEGE CAREER READINESS, FAMILY FINANCIAL STABILITY, AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING. In just two years, the community has rallied together to elevate South Fulton’s Child Well-Being score from 36.0 to 42.1. The growing score demonstrates great progress; however, there is still work to be done. HOW UNITED WAY MEASURES CHILD WELL-BEING In 2017, United Way developed its Child Well-Being Index, composed of child, family and community measures, to track progress. These combined measures generate a score for each zip code of United Way’s 13-county footprint, which can be viewed on interactive maps. Areas of low child well-being appear as red areas on the interactive maps. United Way’s data shows that improving the scores in those areas generates the biggest improvement in the overall regional score, and so it directs its investments toward collaborative efforts that can best address the barriers to child well-being in those areas. Collaborative efforts, which involve partnerships among nonprofits, businesses, civic leaders, volunteers and others, have proven critical to making lasting improvements. THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS United Way of Greater Atlanta in South Fulton has partnered with businesses and community organizations like the South Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Aerotropolis Atlanta Alliance and the Chickfil-A Foundation to drive success. Through these partnerships, the quality of life for children in South Fulton are better positioned to thrive in the long term. “When children thrive, so can South Fulton, and we continue to put an emphasis on improving child well-being in this region,” says Denise Townsend, Regional Director, United Way of Greater Atlanta in South Fulton. “Our impact on child well-being will continue to be realized in the community.” ABOUT UNITED WAY OF GREATER ATLANTA United Way of Greater Atlanta, the largest United Way chapter in the nation, focuses on ensuring that every child in Atlanta has the opportunity to reach his or her full potential. The organization invests in more than 200 programs in 13 counties through the Child Well-Being Impact Fund and works to help children succeed in school, improve financial stability of families, provide affordable and accessible healthcare and end homelessness.
