However, we have hope for the future of Evans because we know how personally invested our citizens and business owners are to the restoration of our community. Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there. In honor of this being our Gents and Neighbors Issue, we’re taking some time to get up close and personal with pharmacist Kyle Pulliam, interior designer Michael Siewert, Dr. Will Lopez, and human performance expert Michael Perry. We’ll get to know what they love - both on and off the job.

OUR CITY IS HOME TO THE BEST OF THE BEST, AND WE’RE GLAD TO CALL THEM NEIGHBOR AND FRIEND
WHO INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO YOUR FIELD OF WORK? I have a friend, Trent Akins. He went into pharmacy school and convinced me to go down that road. I’ve always been very good with math and science, and I love helping people, so that fell right into place with what a pharmacist does. WHAT IS THE MOST FULFILLING PART OF
Kyle Pulliam
YOUR JOB? The satisfaction of helping people. We do traditional retail pharmacy, but we also do a lot of special orders and custom compounding, where we make prescriptions from scratch. If a child has allergies to certain ingredients, we can compound a similar product that doesn’t have the allergens in it. We specifically do a lot with women who are having hormonal issues. We can do a consultation, go over their lab work with them, and custom design a prescription or compound that can help them. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT EVANS? One thing we like most about Evans is the community events that they have at the Lady Antebellum Amphitheatre. It’s fun to go out there and watch Pops under the Stars or a fireworks display. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY? I’m a big fan of staying healthy, so I do quite a bit of jogging and biking. I love to hunt and fish as well.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY? My hobbies have changed over the years. I used to own the world’s largest collection of Judy Garland memorabilia. I traveled around the world and had amazing experiences.

Michael Perry HUMAN PERFORMANCE SPECIALIST CATALYST EXECUTIVE ADVISING & DEVELOPMENT WHO INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO YOUR FIELD OF WORK? There are a number of sources of inspiration. We try to equip leaders to value relationships and take care of people. Over the course of my army career, I was exposed to a number of great leaders, and I modeled my own style after people I believe were really effective and took care of people. WHAT IS THE MOST FULFILLING PART OF YOUR JOB? The most fulfilling part is knowing that we’ve made a difference in the life of someone. Every now and then, we’ll get a story about an experience we’ve walked people through and how that experience has changed the way they see the world and live in it. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT EVANS? Without question - the people. I learned that the first week we were here. We’d moved here from the D.C. area, and we were at Shane’s Rib Shack during Christmas. We were walking out of Shane’s and said good night to the owner. He said good night to us, and all of a sudden three or four families in the restaurant were all saying good night and Merry Christmas. That was very atypical of what we were used to. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY? That’s easy - bass fishing! That would be my second favorite thing about Evans. I can be out of the bed, eat breakfast, and be fishing within 30 minutes.

A CLASSICAL A P P R OAC H
FOLLOWING THE ABRUPT HALT TO THE NORMAL SCHOOL ROUTINE IN MARCH, STUDENTS SHIFTED TO VIRTUAL LEARNING FROM HOME, WITH PARENTS HAVING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THE DAY TO DAY EDUCATION PROCESS. Through that experience, many parents have a new perspective on education, enlightening them to the complexity and variety of factors that culminate in the learning process. Logos Classical Academy, a new school opening its doors in Evans this fall, intentionally addresses those complexities by offering a classical education to students ages kindergarten through 8th grade. School founder Shannon Johnson says, “Classical education addresses the whole child. It not only instills knowledge, but also cultivates wisdom, virtue, and rightly ordered affections. Moreover, it teaches children how to think, not just what to think.” As a former teacher with a master’s degree in education, Shannon is formally trained in various teaching methods, but none of them are quite like classical education. “After I had my own children,” explains Shannon, “I began to research the best way to educate them and came across the classical model and learned of its rich history. It was a eureka moment. Classical education teaches with the grain, so to speak, matching the instructional method to the child’s developmental stage.” Classical education is rooted in a centuries-old approach developed by the early Greeks - the Classical Trivium. The Trivium is a blueprint for when and how best to educate students during their physiological development. Its three distinct learning stages are: THE GRAMMAR PHASE—Young children are especially adept at memorization during the early, foundational phase of learning. Because of that, classical educators can utilize a combination of learning techniques that include rhyme, song, motion memory, visual aids, and more - all techniques designed to engage the child’s memory.

“Classical education addresses the whole child. It not only instills knowledge, but also cultivates wisdom, virtue, and rightly o r d e r e d a f f e c t i o n s .” THE LOGIC PHASE—With a foundation of facts in place, the second phase capitalizes on the child’s natural inclination to question the world around them. Classically educated students are taught the skills they will need for critical thinking - important tools required for wisdom in reasoning and argumentation. THE RHETORIC PHASE—During this final stage of the Trivium, classically educated students are challenged by their teachers to explore and refine their persuasive skills, both in speech and writing. “Classical Christian schools are all over the country, but there’s not one in our area,” says Shannon. “Knowing the value of this type of education and the impact it can have on our children and community, God made it quite evident that it was time to act. I felt His nudge. He then brought along some amazing people who saw the vision and were willing to come alongside and help in this effort.” “I began to research classical, Christian education about seven years ago,” says Logos Steering Committee member Nikki Daniel. “At first, the idea was foreign to me, but after a few months of Photo provided by Logos Classical Academy

some of our close friends began to pray that the Lord would provide another means for classical education in our area, so when Shannon called to tell me that she felt the Lord preparing her to start a new classical school, I was thrilled!” “At Logos Classical Academy,” says Shannon, “our mission is to glorify God by working in partnership with Christian families to equip their children with a Christ-centered, academically excellent, classical education focused on instilling knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.” Logos Classical Academy is now accepting students for kindergarten through 8th grade, with plans to expand into high school grades in the future. Parents can choose for their child to attend the academy under the traditional model for five days a week or using the university model, with the child attending the academy three days a week for classroom instruction; the remaining two days are left for in-home instruction. The academy will also offer elective classes as an option for homeschooling families. Logos Classical Academy will meet at First Baptist Church Evans, located on N. Belair Road and has received accreditation through The Association of Classical Christian Schools. For more information, visit LogosClassicalAcademy.org.

beet and blackberry salad INGREDIENTS + 7 oz. arugula
+ 1/2 Cup chopped cilantro
+ 6 oz. blackberries
+ 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
+ 1-2 organic orange beets
+ 1/2 Cup micro greens
+ 4 oz. cream cheese
+ 4-8 edible pansies
+ 4 oz. goat cheese
+ 1 Tbsp. slivered almonds
DIRECTIONS Rinse and dry beets. Set oven to 425°F and roast beets until they’re tender (about 35-45 minutes). You’ll be able to tell they’re done when the skin starts to come apart very easily; peel while still warm. Quarter the beets then cut into thin slices. Refrigerate 1 hour. Next, using a fork, blend cream cheese and goat cheese with cilantro, garlic, salt, and pepper. Place the arugula on a plate, then cut some of the blackberries in half and leave some whole, placing onto arugula. Drop teaspoon-size pieces of the blended cheeses around the salad. Next, sprinkle the beets and top with micro greens. Finally, dress your salad with the following vinaigrette recipe, adding slivered almonds for crunch. AVOCADO OIL & CILANTRO LIME VINAIGRETTE INGREDIENTS + 2 Tablespoons dijon mustard + 1 tbsp fresh lime juice and zest + 3 teaspoons apple cider vinegar + Kosher salt and freshly ground + 1/2 Cup avocado oil
black pepper to taste
+ 1 Cup cilantro, chopped fine DIRECTIONS In a small mixing bowl, whisk together mustard, lime juice, zest, cilantro, and vinegar. Pouring slowly, add a stream of avocado oil to the bowl, whisking with the other hand. Keep whisking until all of the oil has been poured into the bowl and the ingredients have come together. Season with salt and pepper. Drizzle over your fresh beet and blackberry salad and enjoy! Reach Chef Megan Alig at 706-267-2876 or MeganAlig@hotmail.com for catering, meals for the home, and more!

Finding the New Normal IF SHELTERING IN PLACE AND COVID-19 HAVE TAUGHT US ONE THING, IT HAS BEEN TO RECONSIDER “NORMAL.” Before this, life was busy, schedules were full, work was guaranteed, and
SMALL STEPS TO MEND AND EMBRACE A BETTER TOMORROW
stress was high. In the midst of the Shelter-In-Place mandate, life has slowed down, routines are negotiable, many have lost work, and stress for most remains high. Some face the loss of loved ones, the loss of businesses, the loss of normal. But as we mourn and take tentative steps to move forward, we hope to leave you with some help along the way, including the chance to consider what you would like your new “normal” to be. We spoke with Dr. Hank Flowers, a licensed professional counselor, pastoral counselor, and retired chaplain, to get his guidance on dealing with the pain that many have experienced and how to embrace the good that has surprised us.
1. 2. 3.
For anyone who has experienced loss, “Sit down and talk with somebody,” Dr. Flowers says. “Tell someone your story. Before you even read anything, find someone who can take your story seriously and not be judgmental.”

those
who
have endured the pain of isolation due to quarantine. “There are a lot of lonely people that just want someone to be around...in fact, loneliness is one of the leading causes [of decline] among the elderly today.”
For the families that have discovered new connections with one another, “Enjoy,” Dr. Flowers says with a smile. “Cherish the moment. In my own neighborhood, I’ve seen families spending more time together... parents playing with their kids in the yard... there’s a community being developed among families. These are precious times.”
