In the home, art can be much more than just decor. Mary Ellen Vanaken, a local real estate consultant and her husband have been collecting art for 20 years and nearly every inch of their home is covered in original art. The art tells a story of their travels and taste, with contemporaries mingling with classics in the 2-story foyer. What a welcome! Itzchak Tarkay was an Israeli painter known for his PostImpressionist portraits done in watercolor and acrylic. Influenced by the work of both Henri Matisse and Henri de ToulouseLautrec, Tarkay’s expressive, use of color lent a dream-like quality to his serigraphs, prints, and paintings. Born in 1935 in Subotica, Serbia, Tarkay and family settled in Israel after Allied forces freed them from a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. The artist went on to study at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and later the Avni Institute of Art and Design in Tel Aviv. Later in life, Tarkay mentored younger Israeli artists, including Yaacov Agam and Yuval Wolfson. Mary Ellen Vanaken, Real Estate Consultant 678.665.2887 NorthAtlantaLuxury.com

the highest level of service (you dream it, they make it happen), luxurious accommodations and five-star amenities that draw Hollywood celebs as well as families returning annually. The beauty at Paws Up is more than skin deep, with careful land management, sustainable farming and an equestrian program that rescues wild mustangs bringing young wranglers into the ring for education, not just recreation. “Wild mustangs have been roaming the plains and kicking up dust for centuries. Here at Paws Up, we’re privileged to have the resources and facilities to not only welcome them into our hearts and our herd, but also to spend countless hours ‘gentling,’ or desensitizing and training them. It’s something most cattle ranches won’t consider taking on—and unlike anything any other resort offers, says Equestrian Manager Jackie Kecskes. “It’s a humbling experience to watch an animal transform from skittish to socialized, and we consider it an honor to share it with our guests.” Jackie worked with we three city slickers in the beautiful indoor arena for two hours “cow horsing” - corralling calves and mama cows while on horseback, first clockwise, then counterclockwise before moving them gently through gates. She and her team (beautifully clad and friendly as can be) patiently and professionally queued us on how to work WITH our horse toward a common goal. I channeled my great grandmother, a ranch owner in South Dakota and climbed off my horse feeling confident and curious, falling more in love with Montana every minute. Driving back to our guesthouse (where a wood fire lay at the ready and a path to the hot tub on the deck shoveled) our Kia Soul (each guest group gets one) we wondered what could possibly top that experience with Jackie. That night after another stunning dinner at Pomp, we retired to the cozy lodge bar, Tank, with yet another fireplace the size of a walk-in closet and were treated to an intimate show with three Nashville giants who were at Paws Up for a songwriter’s weekend. By the end of the evening, we were all trading phone numbers promising to keep in touch like kids leaving summer camp. Falling asleep after a day at Paws Up was easy, nestled among plump pillows and high thread count bedding, happily exhausted from basking in Montana’s fresh air, never-ending sky and the conviviality of the cowboys, cowgirls, and new friends. 03 Glamping (a trend coined by Paws Up in 2004) - From mid-May through mid-October, guests “camp” on the Blackfoot River under the stars in a luxe safari-style tent with a butler. Campfire Chefs and Campfire Stars are booked throughout the summer. Big-name talent comes to your campfire and a James Beard Award finalist or Top Chef competitor cook for you outdoors.
04 Pomp, the restaurant has a refined lodge vibe, with massive polished (but not shiny) wood slab tables with brass inlays, perfect succulent centerpieces, distressed copper chargers, white linen napkins and all the right knives and glassware. Executive Chef Sunny Jin (pictured, foraging for juniper berries) has a vision for the food served at Paws Up that is foremost local and refined but not too fussy. Plating is divine, but the food is the star. Sunny took us foraging for juniper berries for that night’s dinner.

SPARKLING WINE FOR YOUR VALENTINE LOVE IS IN THE AIR AND THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE THAN WITH A NICE BOTTLE OF BUBBLES.
ALTHOUGH THE NAME “CHAMPAGNE” IS OFTEN USED TO DESCRIBE ANY SPARKLING WINE, TRUE CHAMPAGNE CAN ONLY COME FROM CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE AND IT IS ONLY MADE IN THE TRADITIONAL METHOD (METHODE CHAMPENOISE) WHERE THE BUBBLES IN THE WINE ARE OBTAINED THROUGH A SECONDARY FERMENTATION INSIDE EACH INDIVIDUAL BOTTLE. Even though Champagne is often the sparkling wine of choice, there are many different styles of sparkling wine and they come from many different regions. FRENCH BUBBLES Henriot Brut Soverain Champagne from Champagne, France - $34.99 Symbolizing precision and balance, fresh and delicious in equal measure, Brut Souverain by Henriot carries the quintessential expression of the great Champagne terroirs. BELUX COFFEE ARTICLE TORI ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY DEBORA FANG
LUCY LIU AND BEN LI BEGAN THEIR COFFEE BUSINESS FROM A SHARED LOVE OF HIGH-END, DELICIOUS COFFEE. Belux Coffee Roasters first was an online retail store that quickly grew in popularity and the Liu family decided to open its first storefront in spring 2018 to make its in-house roasted coffee beans more accessible to the public. Their passion for coffee is now a full-fledged career and their entire day is dedicated to the growing success of their business, and the quality products they sell. The company logo, a bunny, is dedicated to their rescue bunny named Bela which also served as inspiration for the company name. Their storefront located in Alpharetta on the edge of Johns Creek is open Wednesday through Saturday, and guests can come in and purchase coffee accessories like kettles and pour-over carafes, along with their in-house roasted coffee beans for home and office consumption. Looking for a last-minute gift for your Valentine? Belux has various gift sets and package ideas they can help you put together for the coffee savant in your life. So what does an average day look like for the couple obsessed with coffee? 7–8 a.m. Ben and Lucy review coffee selections, promotion offering, daily sales review and customer feedback while having breakfast and, of course, a cup of coffee. 8 a.m. Ben goes to his full-time job as Lucy replies to customer and vendor emails, updates social media and website, and additional marketing efforts for the store. 10:30 a.m. – Noon Lucy goes to the store for customer private appointments which include coffee tastings, hand-brewing equipment demos and product introductions.

Takes pics for new product, design flyer and maintain cleanliness when not so busy. 4:30–8 p.m. Ben comes in after his other job for roasting preparation which includes preparing the green coffee beans, overseeing the roasting process like checking the temperature and humidity, then checks final product of the roasted coffee beans by removing any defective beans, then weighing and bagging. 6 p.m. Store close and go home to gather with the pet bunnies! 34

RENOVATE & REFINE
Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.
Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.
Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!
Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.
