Promoting Farm-to-Fork in Loudoun What started as a health-conscious blog has transformed into two of the largest destination farmers markets in Virginia with a mission to connect NOVA residents to the same farm-tofork food used by some of the best chefs in the area. “We wanted to create a farmers market for the 21st century that includes everything fresh, sustainable and local. We have chefs making great meals on site and to-go healthy meals for busy households,” says Dan Hine, who founded EatLoco markets in 2017. “We’re planning on having over 100 vendors at the One Loudoun market this year and the Brambleton market will most likely double in size. Our markets bring in executive chefs from Lansdowne Resort, The National Conference Center, AhSo Restaurant, Lost Fox Restaurant and many others including caterers and private chefs. All bringing awareness to the importance of supporting our local food producers to keep our bodies and communities strong.”

Ayrshire Farm
Ayrshire Farm in Upperville has raised humane, organic, sustainable heritage breeds for more than two decades. The cows, chickens, pigs, rabbits, and turkeys are a passion for founder Sandy Lerner, who is at the forefront of sustainable farming: “Why are we not aware of what we put in our body? Ours is just better food.” This belief has led to a vertically integrated ecosystem where all animals are pastured and free range, and because they aren’t hybridized can subsist on grass and fertilize their own fields and produce fields. Sandy’s mission has led to operating a grist mill on the Shenandoah for stone ground flour, a raw pet food called MeatMe, and Hunter’s Head Tavern in Upperville. www.ayrshirefarm.com

Wave Williams takes his produce to market 24–48 hours after picking. He operates a 300-acre farm in Westminster, MD that has been in his family for generations and prides himself on his greens: mesclun, spinach, arugula, sorrel, mustard and beet greens … depending on the season, they bring all sorts of varieties. They keep seven greenhouses running in the winter and produce flavorful and fresh produce for farmers markets and restaurants. If you like arugula or want to try it, it is a can’t miss item. “I tell people to make a day of it,” Wave says. “Get out of the house, get the kids and pets out and try everything— You’ll really enjoy it.” tinyurl.com/spp6zrd

Shane Hughes, who returned to his fifth generation family farm 10 years ago, counts Jose Andres and 40 other farm-to-table chefs as loyal customers. Why? “We produce meat with a clean, robust taste and a brightness and firmness that comes with freshness and raising pastured animals, antibiotic and hormone free. We take pride that these animals had a healthy life,” Shane says. They even raise animal feed on 400 acres without chemical fertilizers, use a custom butcher and distribute product to customers themselves: “We get cuts back Tuesday morning and they’re out the same day.” Shane and his crew also bring pork, chickens and eggs to the market. www.libertydelightfarms.com
Ed Smith began growing vegetables and making sausage in South Hill, VA in 2012. He now sells 4,000–5,000 pounds of sausage each week with recipes he and his son Martin developed. Their sausages are hormone/antibiotic, gluten, MSG, nitrate/ nitrite free and run the gamut of flavors from mild brats to their spicy El Diablo. They also grow and pickle jalapeno and cayenne peppers and make mouth-watering cheese dip and pimiento cheese, but the star is the sausage: “Taste it and you’ll know the difference,” Ed says. “Growing up, I always liked my sausage fresh and now I’m bringing that to our customers.” smithsofmecklenburg.com
Max Tyson was raised on an orchard and in 2002 went back to his roots and started his own. He has been producing delicious tree-ripened fruit and other produce ever since. Based on the season, you can find peaches, plums, apples, pears, cherries, nectarines, tomatoes, and asparagus. He also freezes berries and makes jams and jellies when available. What’s the difference when you take home his produce? “Most store-bought fruits are picked prematurely before enough sugar has developed, then it is hydrocooled which further kills the flavor. With us, we test the fruit sugar before harvest, so we get the perfect ripeness to your home,” Max says. www.facebook.com/TysonFarmsLLC

Coming Home HOME IS FAMILY. Home is friendship, and growing up, and love. Home is security. This is the place we gather for many of the most important memories of our lives. We personalize our spaces and there is no home exactly the same. Then it is these collections of homes and the people in them that make up the fabric of our community, the diversity that makes our area unique. In this issue we celebrate the home.

Our homes are often the biggest investments we make. They carry a financial significance even beyond the feelings they invoke. We want them to aesthetically present our values and make us comfortable when exiting an often difficult and hard world. That being said, we have to trust the people we bring in to create our visions of home...people and companies that operate with integrity, loyalty and service. We have taken great care to partner with and take advice from companies and their leaders who exhibit these characteristics so that our readers are confident in the services we represent here. Just like George C. Marshall, whose home we feature this month, our contributors all believe in community and service. Their work on homes is a contribution to lifting our area to even greater heights. After all, if we aren't happy in our homes, how do we function with grace outside?

When it comes to listing, preparing and selling your home, I would suggest these three words—“listen to Pam”! We recently sold a property significantly over the asking price by doing just that. Pam had very strategic ideas on pricing and marketing that resulted in a non-contingent sale in less than two days! Prior to the listing however, Pam went through the house, made suggestions on how to prepare it for showing and provided a list of trusted contractors to do the necessary work at very affordable prices. They showed up on schedule, did the work correctly at the cost agreed to and finished on time. The entire process could not have been easier or gone more smoothly. Thanks Pam. —John Kimball, former River Creek resident

IS DYING WELL IS AS IMPORTANT AS LIVING WELL? Out this month from Dr. Martha Callihan of Five Stones Wellness is a book that asserts that it's not only possible but advisable to plan for a "good death." In A Death Lived, she relates the experience of having to say "good-bye" to her spouse. She learned, "that we can be intentional [and] mindful about the process" of dying if we don't die suddenly. In her view, "We need to be able to have the difficult conversations, face the hard truth and not be afraid to voice what is real."

He may be one of the few locals who can not only identify the house, but say why he reveres its former occupant. He tells how the five-star general was tasked to create a plan to rebuild war-torn Europe – the plan bearing his name – and why he served as President Truman’s special envoy to China. 2020's hottest entertainment appliances MUST-HAVE KITCHEN ADDITIONS FOR YOUR PARTIES THIS SUMMER
GOOGLE HOME OR AMAZON ECHO APPLIANCES THAT CAN ORDER YOUR GROCERIES, OVENS THAT CAN AIR-FRY, COLORFUL CABINETRY AND SPECIALTY SINKS THAT WASH YOUR DISHES ARE JUST A FEW AWE-INSPIRING TRENDS IN HOME APPLIANCES FOR 2020. But to Christy Oliff, marketing VP of Appliance Distributors Unlimited (www.adu.com), there are three “must have” appliances if you love to entertain. 1. A DEDICATED ICE MACHINE. Regardless of what kinds of beverages you serve, the number one pain has been running out of ice. ADU features several dedicated ice machines that produce up to 25 pounds of tasteless, odorless ice out of pure H2O, with no bubbles or impurities, and a “fast ice” button that speeds up production. Interior lights keep the ice looking as good as it tastes.

BEVERAGES 2. THE BEVERAGE CENTER Another common frustration for hosts and hostesses is never knowing exactly what your guests want to drink. The easiest solution: offer a bit of everything. The best way to do this is with a dedicated beverage center. For example, the Sub-Zero 24” beverage center that stores beer, soda, mixes and mineral water as well as wine at select temperatures between 34 degrees and 45 degrees F using a touch-screen panel. The pull-out wine rack preserves wine flavors with a UV-resistant glass door. A clear utility bin makes room for lemons, limes, cheese and other garnishes. “They’re so handy you may want one in your exercise room, home theatre room or out by the pool,” Christy says.

3. GE MONOGRAM PIZZA OVEN Christy’s final fave is the GE Monogram Pizza Oven. “It is obviously perfect for pizza parties and it cooks extremely quickly at very high temperatures, making exactly the crispy crust that everyone loves,” Christy says. Besides pizza, she cooks breads, nan – “anything you would do on a baking stone.” In just a few minutes you can cook up to two medium-sized pizzas side-by-side with the crisping performance of coal- or wood-burning ovens and customized to everyone’s individual tastes. More than 50 brands of every imaginable appliance are available in ADU’s Chantilly showroom, and there’s always someone to help you find what you need. The locally-owned, family business is always on trend as is Christy’s own LinkedIn site.

MECHANICAL IN LOUDOUN COUNTY, PHILANTHROPY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE COMBINE TO FORM SHAWN MITCHELL’S SUCCESS FORMULA. https://www.modernmec.com/ In 2010, Shawn Mitchell joined the ranks of people who had a dream to start a business and do it better than the rest. Modern Mechanical began in the basement of Mitchell’s Ashburn home. Shawn and his wife Ashley had just bought a house, had their first child and decided Ashley would stay home when Shawn went out on a limb. “It wasn’t the most glamorous office space,” Shawn jokes, “but at least the commute was good!” Shawn soon grew Modern Mechanical into one of Loudoun’s largest and most respected providers of residential and commercial mechanical services. He decided to specialize on heating and air conditioning and plumbing throughout Northern Virginia and made it his mission to deliver those services as quickly as possible to differentiate his services. An opportunity for major expansion arose in 2016 when he joined the Direct Energy franchise family and was able to grow his business to an even greater extent. Now, his business offers HVAC services, plumbing, electrical, solar-energy solutions, and industrial services through its franchise brands: One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, and Mister Sparky Electrical. Modern Mechanical’s customer base grew to 55 employees and now supports a fleet of 31 yellow, blue and red vans. “We represent one-stop shopping for professional home services in Loudoun County,” Shawn boasts. “We’re proud to say that ‘one call does it all.’ We love working with area realtors and property managers because they simply make one call and we can dispatch all three services to a single home in no time at all, with simplified billing to go along with that.”

INSPIRE, CREATE, SUSTAIN: KANE'S THREE-FOLD PROCESS MAKES OUTDOOR LIVING IRRESISTIBLE
JOSH KANE, AT 44, LOOKS TOO YOUNG TO BE MARKING HIS 30TH YEAR IN BUSINESS – UNTIL YOU REALIZE THAT HE STARTED KANE LANDSCAPING IN 4TH GRADE. With the help of some good friends and his dad, he maintained the business during the week while he attended Virginia Tech studying landscape contracting, horticulture and business. It’s very much a family business, with wife Julie providing strategic planning and doing all the financials, not to mention assistant-coaching her daughter’s basketball team. (Josh handles soccer so none of the stereotypes are exactly right.) Josh has always loved the outdoors and the couple’s own backyard sports, climbing ropes and a playhouse for their four kids set against a wooded area near Algonquian Park. The company now has five landscaping crews to handle projects as well as maintenance, with Josh acting as lead architect and planner. Josh says his threepart approach to any project can be summarized
THE KANE WAY
Outdoor Fireplaces Add Quality Living Space to Your Home
as: Inspire, Create and Sustain.
INSPIRE Inspiration involves helping homeowners come up with ideas or helping to transform their “wish list” into workable designs that fit their lifestyle and their personal property, Josh explains. “Inspiring people is usually visual – sharing with folks what we’ve done and accomplished in the past.” Then, he has a team of creative architects who can explain what’s possible and what form that will take, bringing designs to life with the latest in design software. Done well, the right plan will help families create something not just aesthetically beautiful but workable – and maybe even evoke places they’ve been that they especially enjoyed. “The right landscaping flows naturally from one place to the next,” as opposed to creating “boxes” where things happen. Yes, landscaping improves your home’s value and “curb appeal,” but it’s also the place where your kids play, your family entertains and your memories happen, he says.

TREND SETTER TWO OF THE AREA'S TOP INTERIOR DESIGNERS SHARE THEIR TOP TRENDS ARTICLE MELINDA GIPSON | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTY KOSNIC, MICHELLE LINDSEY JULIE HOFFMAN OF J&L INTERIORS (http://www.jandlinteriors.net/)
AND
JENNIFER JENKINS OF BUMMER LAMB (https://www.bummerlamb.com/) ARE TWO OF AREA’S TOP INTERIOR DESIGNERS. When we sat them down to discuss today’s trends, we had so much fun that we decided to video the conversation. See http://vimeo.com/leesburglifestyle. Here are their key take-aways: Organic Accents Evoke the Outdoors
Organic Fabrics that Perform
1. Personalize -- to a point. Incorporate unique items you may have collected in your work or travels. Says Julie, “The right, impactful item raises a question, ‘Gee, I wonder where that came from?’” Too many can be a distraction.
Multifunctional Rooms Bring the Family Together
2. Minimalistic design with more comfort. Organic materials long ago replaced chintz and silk, but today’s trend favors durable “performance" fabrics that can look great longer. 3. Multifunctional spaces are bringing Dad’s

office or the kids’ study rooms closer to the living room or kitchen. Families want to feel more connected and less compartmentalized. 4. Color is on the upswing. "Organic fabrics and rugs can be impactful even in neutral tones, but if you're looking for a pop of color, it's definitely coming back," says Jennifer. 5. Antiques accents are back, typically with more contemporary finishes. Before shopping, consult a pro who can help create a cohesive look to suit your lifestyle.
