issue, no one has discovered a way to rid our lives of busyness and stress, but there are many ways to cope with and even master it so it doesn't adversely affect our health. Focus is one way to be our best. Whether you have Olympic-sized dreams as an athlete or just want to have fun with a team after school, Ion's shiny new International Training Center has a program for you! Other locals have worked hard to adapt cutting-edge workout routines like The Daily Method, which promises to help us strengthen our core as we realign our bodies and minds to stand tall. Dr. Martha Calihan of Five Stones Healing Arts and Wellness Center asks us to be mindful of that space between our stimuli and our reactions to them, and use this golden pause to take more control over our environment rather than letting it control us! Something ELSE that shouldn't control us are our hormones, or the lack thereof! Jan Benjamin of BeBalanced shares how her center's supplements have helped people sleep better, lose weight, calm their frenzied minds and even drop a few pounds. There's even a test you can take online to see if you're experiencing symptoms you might never have attributed to hormone imbalance.

Through the Lo o k i n g G l a s s EVER FEEL YOUNGER THAN YOU LOOK IN THE MIRROR? You’re not alone. Women, in particular, in our hyper-competitive business and ultra-political culture can be their worst critics. Maybe it’s that skin starting to hang over your jawline, those pouches around the mouth, age lines or bags around the eyes or an encroaching double chin. Whatever the issue, if you’d like a professional evaluation of how you look, the Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery is a great place to start. Although Dr. Michael J. Brown is the Center’s award-winning, 5-star-rated, board-certified plastic surgeon, he will be the first to tell you that it’s not as bad as you may think. Everyone has a personal aesthetic: the way they see themselves, or as they’d like to be, regardless of what the mirror tells us. His practice concentrates on creating a “natural aesthetic” that helps patients realize the image they have of themselves with the most minimally invasive procedure(s) possible. “We don’t go for the ‘wind-tunnel’ look, or the way some women in Beverly Hills appear to have walnuts in their cheeks! There are all too many people that will happily sell you a syringe, but I don’t like people to look like they’re blown up with filler,” he says. “You want to look like you, only younger, or without that issue that’s been bothering you, sometimes for years.” This frank critique of the “beauty business” is only your first surprise. Despite having built a state-of-the art surgical facility, he is happy to treat patients without using surgery. New non-surgical procedures can address problem areas in as little as 45 minutes and have patients resuming their normal schedule within hours instead of days. The team goes so far as to say that the new procedures they’re using represent truly “breakthrough technology” so advanced that they’re the only team certified in the area to use it and will actually serve as a regional training center for other practitioners. Collectively the suite of procedures use radio frequency (RF) to work its magic. The minimally invasive tools, each using only a small incision such as at the belly button or under the chin, come in three attachment sizes: one for smaller, more delicate areas like

the eyes and neck called AccuTite, one for face contouring called FaceTite, and one for advanced body contouring and refinement procedures called BodyTitePRO that may be used alone or in combination with liposuction. The RF assists primarily with heating the tissues just beneath the skin and on top of the skin to promote tightening, collagen building and also with breaking up the fat. 16

Amanda says that if you do have stubborn fat that you want removed, Dr. Brown can remove as little as 150 ccs or as much as 1,000 ccs, allowing your body to reveal its natural contours.

Results can be demonstrable in just a few hours, but the treatment actually improves the skin’s own ability to rebuild elasticity and a youthful appearance. Most commonly treated areas include the face and neck, but any place that exhibits wrinkles, discoloration or acne scarring can be treated quickly using only a skin-numbing topical gel. Olympian Luiz Taifas Infuses Ion with Positive Energy

Leesburg Lifestyle | January 2020
ION: WHERE POSITIVE ENERGY BREEDS PASSION
In 1991, he met an American coach that brought him to the U.S. for the first time. The wife of a diplomat, Lydia Paley Hume was herself a skater and “just wanted to do something to help in the skating world. Being a skater, you always want to help someone else,” Luiz says. By 1995, he began training near Lydia’s home in Fairfax, alongside Michael Weiss, a three-time national champion (1999, 2000, 2003) and U.S. Olympian. Today, they play soccer

ION: WHERE POSITIVE ENERGY BREEDS PASSION
(CON TI N UED)
Besides the gym, adults just looking to stay in shape and have fun can take Zumba, yoga and barre. There are learn-to-skate classes, speed skating, ice dancing, a “beer league” for post-collegiate hockey players, a Wounded Warrior hockey team, and, yes, curling! Luiz deals often with parents who want to know if their son or daughter has got what it takes to be an Olympian, and his standard reply is, “It’s too early to tell. It takes a lot of commitment from the family, from the skater / athlete, coaches, everybody around to make it to that level.” One skater might freeze in front of nine judges and 5,000 fans, and decide that she’d prefer to play on a team. That said, there’s no end of inspiration for those with drive and ability. In November and December, anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. the casual observer could catch a four-hour workout by Luiz’s breathtakingly beautiful niece, Bristiana Prodea, a threetime Romanian junior national champion by age 15. A late-bloomer, she took to the ice at age 4. Along with Michael Weiss and four-time world champion Kurt Browning, she was practicing for Ion’s December “The Snow Story On Ice” production. Fliers for the show promised an “escape to a magical world where anything is possible,” a proclamation that could be said to mirror Luiz’s own philosophy. The way he sees it, by catering to those who want to be the best, Ion can offer something world-class to everyone, even the casual sports enthusiast. “It’s not about just one thing, it’s about helping the community. We are from the community and for the community. We want to be about positive energy, a positive environment” – which explains the name, Ion. Providentially, Ion is also how the name Jon – Luiz’s father’s name – is spelled in Romanian. “He pushed me and helped me to reach my goals – so we always wanted to remember him as part of this adventure.” 24
Leesburg Lifestyle | January 2020
Bristena Prodea, 3-Time Romanian Champion at 15
Luiz skates 15-20 hours a week. There are public skate sessions and learn-to-skate classes for all levels including an eight week package that comes with a 25% discount.
Luiz spends about 8 hours/week in the gym under the watchful eye of Ahmed Ragheb, a weightlifting champion who has competed in the Olympics and still holds a cleanand-jerk record of 423.5 pounds.
Coaching is available for all levels, but for more advanced skaters a skating academy starts Jan. 1.
Hockey teams also cover all ages, including adults who play for fun and a Wounded Warrior team for veterans.

WHEN DEBORAH HENLEY’S TEAM AT THE LOUDOUN FREE CLINIC STEPPED ON STAGE IN NOVEMBER TO ACCEPT THE LOUDOUN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE’S TOP AWARD FOR COUNTY CHARITIES, IT MARKED LESS THAN A YEAR OF HER TENURE AS CLINICAL DIRECTOR OF THE ORGANIZATION. Retired after 50 years in medicine, she’d been a hospital administrator and helped build two hospitals from the ground up, so she knew a little something about staffing and equipping a highly efficient, health-care operation. What she didn’t know was how quickly she’d fall in love with the clinic when she went online to look for a “health-care” related volunteer opportunity. “I absolutely fell in love with the staff, the providers, the caring – and, I felt I had still a lot to give,” Deborah told us. Having worked for both for-profit and non-profit hospitals, she had some ideas on how to increase work flows more cost-effectively. Now the clinic delivers $11 worth of medical care for less than $1 spent and they are working with top national health-care providers to pioneer a system for tracking patient outcomes to improve the quality and efficiency of their treatment. Americares, Loyola University of Chicago, and the National Association of Free Clinics were impressed enough with Deborah’s direction that they selected the Loudoun Free Clinic to be one of 50 institutions that will to help codify more productive processes for free clinics nationwide. Deborah has been in health care her whole life, but it’s only through her experience with the clinic that she’s been reminded why she became a nurse in the first place. “The beauty of it is that, by seeing patients here, they are getting healthier and we are keeping them working. They pay taxes; they are getting more productive and we’re keeping them out of the emergency room.” That saves

tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses that would otherwise have to be covered at government expense. Unless someone suffers a medical problem outside of clinic hours, there’s little reason not to start at the Loudoun Free Clinic, which becomes not only the primary care provider for residents who meet the income eligibility requirements, but also their gateway to specialists who volunteer

it but can’t afford it. Deborah’s volunteering with the clinic began in helping patients apply for this aid. Recently, a young woman with Multiple Sclerosis obtained three doses of a drug costing $60,000 per dose. After it was administered with INOVA’s assistance, she was able to resume walking with the aid of a walker. More than 35 doctors and nurse practitioners, PAs, MAs, EMTs, medical students, and BSN nursing students in their last year of training often work late

into the evening to see patients after their typical work day. The staff is as diverse as their patients, and most speak their language. “They’re from all over: Peru, Venezuela, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Bolivia – it is a unique mixture that comes together like puzzle pieces and just works beautifully,” Deborah says. Together they provide care for 800-900 patients, but could see as many as 200 more. The clinic’s financial need is inching towards $1 million/year – which seems high until it’s compared with the cost of treating patients in the Emergency Room or letting them become too sick to make a meaningful contribution to the community. Just one example helps paint the picture of the difference the clinic makes. A young man – just 32 years old – came to the clinic for treatment of his high blood pressure, diabetes and congestive heart failure, all largely due to being overweight. Clinic professionals helped him diet, stabilize his diabetes, and improve his overall health. Because of the care he received, he changed his course of study to get his degree in pharmacy, and now is doing his practicum at a pharmacy in Pennsylvania. “He told me, ‘Deborah, when I’m licensed, I’m going to come back and volunteer for you as a pharmacist!’” 30

Jill Dailey ignited the barre fitness boom in 2000 when she opened The Dailey Method’s first studio in San Francisco. Janet Parker and Alessia McIntosh bring the time-efficient and highly adaptive barre and cycle classes here to Ashburn. The workout is designed to challenge, stretch and redefine all your muscles in just a 45- or 60-minute workout. Every barre class incorporates Pilates, floor exercise, yoga and light weights. There’s child care available, so classes include many young moms trying to regain their pre-pregnancy shape and flexibility. Other women and men also find encouragement and adaptations to make the workout safe and effective. Because it’s based on orthopedic exercise, it’s great for core strengthening, conditioning, injury therapy, and balance. “Finding your center” is a common refrain, and you’ll emerge feeling more

The Dailey Method Loudoun also offers cycling in a way that raises your pulse rate in a communal, “cardio-party” atmosphere. That starts by turning out the lights and cranking up the music! Colored lights make the workout feel like a night out dancing. There’s a new client special of just $49 for two weeks so you can see how both approaches fit into your busy schedule, and an app for your phone that is streamlined to show you the next available classes from your local studio so you can easily tap a class to attend, or schedule your weekly workout. 44675 Cape Ct #180, Ashburn, (571) 510-3900
Nobody needs to point out how stressful our lives are, but it’s worth noting that the very culture that creates that stress all too often offers “band-aid” fixes. Dr. Martha Calihan of The Five Stones Healing Arts and Wellness Center in Leesburg describes her practice of “integrative and functional medicine” as the medicine of “why?” You have issues, but what got you to that point? It could be genetics, environment, nutrition, your stress level, sleep, movement, other medications you’re taking – or typically a function of all of the above! Learning and practicing mindfulness is a great place to start to address physical and mental issues, because the mind and body are so connected. Learning to meditate can help. Dr. Calihan quotes the author Victor Frankel in discussing how there’s a pause between any stimulus and response. That space between being simply reactive and becoming more responsive is where our power lies. “If you can figure out a way to respond differently, what that ends up meaning is that you’re less triggered by everything. We can’t always change the stimulus, but we can change how we respond.” That’s the shift that creates an expansiveness that has a beneficial effect for our health and wellbeing. She holds an open group meditation class at Five Stones Dr. Martha Calihan's Open Meditation Class
every Wednesday night and has a nutritionist, physical therapist, massage therapist and other specialists on staff to help address ailments as complex as autoimmune disease, lyme disease, chronic conditions, and thyroid and hormonal disorders. 116-Q Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, (703) 669-6118.
