At Loveland & South Lifestyle, we are honored to share positive stories and heartwarming content that we hope will lift your spirits. With so many event cancellations, we felt it was still very important to highlight 100 years of greatness in our community with centennial features honoring the Rialto Theater, the Loveland Rotary Club, and the Loveland Lion’s Club. We interviewed three vibrant and strong women who shared their passion for why they have served in our community for many years. Give Your self a Boos t!

QUICK TIPS (AND A RECIPE) TO HELP YOU BOLSTER YOUR NUTRITION AND IMMUNITY MANY PEOPLE ARE OUT OF JOBS, WORKING FROM HOME, AND MAKING CHANGES TO THEIR DAILY WAY OF LIFE DURING THIS CURRENT PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS. Ironically,

ARTICLE BRADY STEWART | PHOTOGRAPHY FLOURISH BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY

the chaos of transition can actually inhibit people from taking steps to protect their own wellbeing. Although it’s easy to lose track of one’s personal health, this is precisely the time we should recalibrate our diet with a focus on boosting our immunity. In an effort to learn more about this crucial topic we spoke with Kristy Hall, a board certified holistic nutritionist and writer of health blog ‘Living Well Nutrition.’ “People’s bodies function similar to cars. They need the right kind of fuel. You wouldn’t put diesel fuel in a vehicle that takes gasoline because it wouldn’t function correctly,” Kristy explains. “The same goes for our bodies and gut health.” The body needs multiple micronutrients in order to be at the optimal level for proper immune function. These micronutrients are found in the foods we eat. Kristy ensures that the solutions to a healthy immune system are relatively simple. “Yes, you can boost your immune system. The very best way to do that is through food.” According to Kristy, foods can be categorized as either depleting or nourishing. “Sugar especially tends to be a depleting food, at times slowing the body’s immune response down.” Nourishing foods tend to be whole organic foods, that are rich in fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamin A, E, and D. Nutrients like zinc, selenium, and vitamin C can all help to boost your immune system. By adding a mixture of foods that contain these essential nutritional elements, you can easily boost your immunity and add delicious flavor to any meal. Kristy provided us with a nutritious recipe for a hearty breakfast frittata filled with immune boosting properties. 12

1. Put the oven rack on the third level down and turn on the broiler. 2. In a large skillet (with slanted sides) add avocado oil, meat, ½ tsp salt, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, and sage over medium-high heat. 3. While meat is browning, blanch the broccoli florets. 4. Once meat is browned, add vegetables and cook just until the vegetables begin to soften. 5. Whisk 8 eggs with 1 tsp. salt and ½ c. milk. 6. Evenly spread the meat and vegetables in the skillet and pour eggs over mixture. 7. Cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes until eggs begin to set. With a silicon spatula, gently lift the edges and tilt the skillet so the runny eggs pour underneath. 8. When eggs are almost set, move the skillet to the oven. If using cheese, add it on top of frittata before putting it in the oven. Broil for 10-12 minutes or until the eggs are puffy and set. 9. Serve with a side of berries for an extra immune boost!

MR.

ROGERS,

THE

BELOVED,

RED-SWEATERED

TELEVISION HERO, ONCE SAID TO “LOOK FOR THE HELPERS.” By helpers, Mr. Rogers meant the people who seek to make life better for others in some way, whether small or profound, without asking for any favors in return. It seems as though humans are feeling a heightened need to respond to that call. In today’s world of self-obsessed social media, networking, and marketing, helpers might seem hard to come by. These helpers typically don’t wear capes or make a big ruckus. Instead they are humble, showing up when we least expect it. In fact, they may be our next-door neighbors. In Loveland, two clubs seek to help others purely for the sake of service. As of 2020, the Rotary and Lions clubs have been following their lofty goal of selfless service for 100 years. As a 30-year member of the Rotary Club, Betsy Burns enjoys being among a group of innovative and motivated helpers. Betsy has held nearly every position in the group, from being a member of the Board of Directors to holding the title of president. While Betsy was one of the first female members, she emphasizes how welcoming the Loveland Rotary was to women and anyone willing to put in work toward community service. Throughout the years, Rotarians of Loveland have provided immense outreach internationally and locally. Internationally, the club has sent medical equipment to Mexico and works with the PolioPlus program in an effort to end polio in Africa. Locally, the Rotary Club provides college scholarships to high school seniors, technology to classrooms, and literacy services to low-income households, to name a few.

OUR TOWN (CONTINUED) Wilma Davis’ involvement with the Lions Club began when she saw the ‘Little Train’ in operation at North Lake Park (The Buckhorn Northern Railroad, 29th St. & Taft Avenue, Loveland). As she stopped to watch, a man encouraged, “Would you like to drive that? Join the Lions Club!” Admittedly, Wilma joined the club so she could drive the train. One of her favorite memories during the thirteen years she drove the train involves a family of five generations, including a 101-year-old great grandma and a threemonth-old baby, riding together and building memories. Wilma worked at the Loveland Sheriff’s Office for 27 years as a dispatcher, sergeant, and the first female deputy. Wilma’s resume also includes time as a gas station attendant, one of the first female wrecker and tow truck drivers in the northern Colorado area, and a mother. She has even tried her luck at drag racing. “I’ve had an amazing life,” Wilma says. An essential part of that can be traced to her service in the Lions Club. Over her thirteen years of membership, Wilma’s service in the club has come with a variety of positions, including treasurer and president. While driving the Little Train remains her favorite role, Wilma enjoys the many ways that the Lions Club fulfills their simple motto: “We Serve.”

OUR TOWN (CONTINUED) Among the events that the Lions Club organizes and supports are free community pancake breakfasts, an annual golf tournament, and the Timber Dan Toy Show. Their services and fundraising help provide necessary protective gear for local police, eye exams for children, and free eyeglasses for anyone in need. They support local high schoolers by funding scholarships, proms, and graduations. Above all, KidSight is the program that Wilma favors. The program provides eye exams to children ages 6 months through 6 years. According to Lions KidSight website, “Unless vision problems are detected early and corrected, they risk becoming permanent by age 7.” Over 2,000 children in Loveland alone have recieved free exams. Like the Rotary Club, the Lions Club will celebrate its 100th year anniversary of service this May (tentatively-- the date is to be determined) and the 20th anniversary of their annual Golf Tournament (June 11th, 2020). Betsy and Wilma are both in agreement that dedicating time to volunteer work is way more than a responsibility. “It’s a way to pay back the community, get involved, and stay aware. It’s not work: it’s enjoyment,” Wilma says. Additionally, there is a teen arm of the Lions Club called the Leos. They help aid in fundraising efforts and sell tickets for the Little Train. At only $10, monthly dues are minimal and weekly meetings are optional (but encouraged). Both clubs welcome new members, volunteers, and donations. You have the opportunity to be a helper alongside Betsy, Wilma, and all the other club members while experiencing the joy that comes with putting others above yourself.

RENOVATION AND INNOVATION BIND HISTORY AND COMMUNITY TOGETHER

MANY KNOW THE RIALTO THEATER CENTER (RTC) AS THE BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED VENUE LOCATED IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN LOVELAND. Situated among picturesque boutiques, restaurants, and robust downtown life, the Rialto Theater is a pillar in the community. The 100 year history of the theater has been one of ups, downs, and a series of transformations. The Rialto has its origins as a silent movie theater with a grand opening that dates all the way back to May 26, 1920. The Rialto was built by William C. Vorreiter, a local businessman and former president of the Bank of Loveland. The architect behind the Rialto’s design was the talented and ambitious Robert K. Fuller of Denver. As the Cultural Services Director for the city of Loveland, Susan Ison has had a lot of involvement with the Rialto Theater over the years. Susan, who moved to Loveland in 1977, remembers going to the theater before it closed later that same year due to a decline in admissions. This was partially the fault of the rising popularity of large multiplexes. After the Rialto closed its doors, the theater was converted into a mini retail mall. The mall was not a successful venture, and eventually the building was abandoned. Other than the marquee that was constructed and removed years later, not much has changed about the Rialto’s facade. The restoration prioritized a return to the theater’s original 1920s aesthetic, whereas the marquee was not an original design element. As with anything that has lived for a century, the RTC has had a life filled with transformations, renovations, and restorations. Many of the theater’s early elements have been restored or uncovered, such as the front stained glass window and the large murals painted on each side of the stage, two of which are complete originals.

Susan Ison Susan Ison has spent 40 years working for the city of Loveland. When asked what she was most proud of in her career, she responded by saying, “I’m proud of the staff at the Rialto. I think that what I bring to the Rialto is supporting the employees and helping them do their jobs the best they can.”

“ THE RENOVATION OF THE RIALTO WA S A COOPERATIVE EFFORT. PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNIT Y RE ALLY CAME TOGE THER TO SEE IT THROUGH SUC CE SSFULLY,” SUSAN SAYS.

While it was important to preserve and restore the theater to its original beauty, there was also a need for additional space.

“It was not ideal-- especially when it was snowing or raining,” Susan recalls.

Loveland went through a recession that left downtown with many empty storefronts. Once the renovations were completed on the theater, other businesses and restaurants began to pop up nearby. While the RTC does a lot to honor and maintain the history of the venue, they have evolved into primarily serving as a performing arts theater. “We get artists who play all over the world. They really like our theater because it’s an intimate size and the acoustics are incredible,” Susan says. “The Rialto has really brought a sense of community to downtown Loveland again.” Due to COVID-19, shows and events have been cancelled indefinitely. “The Rialto is a community gathering place, which of course is something that we are missing terribly now,” Susan says. Unsure what the immediate future will bring, the decision was made to postpone the RTC’s 100th anniversary celebration for a year. While this decision was a difficult one to make, Susan believes that it is the right thing to do. “As people get older, they often take the attitude (at least I know I certainly do) that they should get to celebrate their birthday for longer than a day,” Susan says. “I think that after 100 years you should be able to celebrate for the whole year!”

The Rialto “In the early years, the Rialto pretty much had the only show in town. It brought a lot of excitement to the community with silent films and Vaudeville shows. The challenges came in the 60s when the malls and movie theaters became popular. It was shut down for 20 years.” - Susan Ison

BRINGING KINDNESS TO THE FRONT

ONE LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER STEPS UP TO BRING HER COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN THE MIDST OF ISOLATION

PURE JOY IS ALL I HAVE TO DESCRIBE THIS GIFT THAT I WAS ABLE TO GIVE TO MY NEIGHBORS. The Front Steps Project was founded by Cara Soulia in Needham, Massachusetts. She had the idea to take five-minute portraits of residents in her community on their front steps with the simple intention to bring people together during a time of isolation. “I aim to highlight the faces of our community during a time when we might not see them passing at the grocery store, coffee shop, on the train or at the gym,” Cara wrote in an Instagram post. Inspired by Cara’s vision, Kristie Allbritten of Spoken For Photography became excited about doing the same thing in the Johnstown/Milliken community. tI felt the overwhelming desire to speak life into families during this quarantine-- from six to ten feet away, of course. (I find comfort in following the rules-- it’s part of my Type A personality!) I did research about how to honor CDC guidelines for social distancing and complied to all of their suggestions. I believe now, more than ever, is a crucial time to be a light. I reached out to my neighbors, encouraged them to invite their neighbors, and sought out families who would’ve possibly wanted to join

in on the fun. Originally, I thought I would photograph families late on weekday afternoons. As possible news of tighter social distancing restrictions trickled in, I felt an urgency to start immediately. I started preparing one Sunday after lunch and hit the ground at 3:30 p.m. The afternoon was beautiful and several families were outside crafting beautiful displays of sidewalk chalk art. What started as an experiment absolutely exploded. I had 15 families scheduled every 15 minutes! Some neighbors had very little notice to prepare, but their willing spirits proved anything can be done when a community comes together. I tried to organize my route by neighborhood and the direction the home was facing in order to best plan for lighting. I had to advise a couple of families to wear sunglasses because there was no way to avoid full sunshine! I stood on the sidewalk, waved, introduced myself, and gave them a quick rundown of what to expect. I snapped three images-- standing, sitting, and a family hug. Each family got creative with the project. I asked some of the families to make signs for the session. It could say anything they wanted, as long as it included “#thefrontstepsproject.” From photos with bare feet, beer, and babies to families decked out in pajamas, everyone’s interpretation was unique. On one block, the neighbors continuously cheered and bantered across the street. I drove from address to address singing with delight to my loud

future, those memories will spark stories and bring emotions to life from this crazy time in history. This project represents generosity. I want you to see the smiling faces of this community and know that God is good. These family pictures document an unprecedented time in history. They represent a resilient nation that chose compassion in the midst of chaos. Truthfully, I wanted this project to become a part of my testimony. I wanted to show that God is in control through images of my own family. Testimonies are often formed during challenging times. I often challenge myself with the question, “What can I do?” Now, I will ask you the same question-- “What can you do?” CityLifestyle.com/LovelandandSouth

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.
