AS NOVEMBER ROLLS AROUND, WE’RE ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE APPROACH OF THANKSGIVING, THE HOLIDAY SEASON AND TIME SPENT WITH OUR LOVED ONES. The winding down of the year always brings about a time of reflection for us—remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day parade or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of sweet potato pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of putting together a monthly magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from all of you that have made what we do possible. We also take this chance to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations or charities giving back locally. We hope that as you read this issue, you—like us—find inspiration in the lives and experiences of your neighbors and the connections that have been made.

ZION HILL CELEBRATES 24TH ANNUAL RITES OF PASSAGE CLOSING PROGRAM African music, dance, drumming, praise and rituals will saturate the sanctuary at Zion Hill Baptist Church at “Oukumo,” the closing ceremony of the church’s 2019 Rites of Passage Program, designed for youth ages 13-18 and based on African rites of passage traditions which usher boys and girls into young adulthood. More than 50 young adults are anticipated to be welcomed back to the community with extraordinary African pageantry by the congregation, family and friends. The sanctuary is transformed with an African motif and accentuated with guests dressed in traditional African attire. The evening culminates with the “Karamu,” or “feast” which features cuisine from the African diaspora. The Rites of Passage Program is the vision of Dr. Aaron L. Parker, pastor of Zion Hill, and his wife, Mrs. Shelia Parker, who is the administrator of the program. Nearly 1000 young people have successfully completed the program. “Oukumo” will be held on Sunday, November 10 at 5 p.m. at Zion Hill, 6175 Campbellton Road. The event is free and open to the public. For additional information, call 404.691.8025 or visit ZionHill.org.

FESTIVAL? I must admit I hadn’t until my visit to Pensacola, Florida. Seeking offbeat paths of travel? Well, my journeys are proven to be for your benefit. The best fall ever awaits in this Sunshine State haven. Never in a million years would I have associated fall festivals with Florida! Pensacola is bubbling with culture, style and entertainment that will have you wondering why you have not visited in years past. So, settle in and get ready to be sun-kissed. 14

Pensacola
Pack a bag to escape Atlanta. A five-hour drive or an even shorter 47 minutes in the air, Pensacola will greet you with an unrivaled southern charm and hospitality that makes this city sparkle beyond its white sand beaches; in addition to the hospitality and charm are the personalities. Yes, the citizens of Pensacola are genuinely welcoming and eager to share their community for your enjoyment. History buffs step forward to this Gulf Coast gem destination. Pensacola is the home of the first settlement in the United States of America, dated in 1559, and recently one of the stops on the Mississippi Blues Trail. Whether you are a solo traveler or with family on a holiday, prepare to make memories to last a lifetime. From unique spa services to the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, this city will have you clamoring to plan your immediate or soon return. SPA PEACE Boutique and quaint are key attributes of this spa. The team at Fusion Spa have anointed hands, making your treatments seem like a sleep serum. Between my naps during my services, I opted for the Effleurage Aqua Polish. Fusion spa is equipped with beauty products by Aveda, so prepare to have a voluminous glow. PIECE OF CULTURE A rich heritage dating back to 1559 makes Pensacola a home of historical significance. Beyond the history and beach, Pensacola has an opera, ballet, symphony, theatre, museum and myriad art galleries. Strolling downtown, I would suggest Jackson’s for lunch and Restaurant Iron for dinner. More importantly, make a day of experiencing historic BelmontDevilliers district. Belmont-Devilliers is the center of the African-American community that represents a cultural celebration. It is here you will find monuments of the Mississippi Blues Trail and some of the best southern soul food at Five Sisters Blues Cafe. PEACE OF MIND Hilton will honor you. Beach views equal tranquility and the suite sizes at the Hilton Pensacola Beach hotel are nothing short of phenomenal. Bartender Myles Reeves crafts signature cocktails that will surely please any palette, just ask for a bonsai fizz or the bourbon-soaked cherry. November 2019 | South Fulton Lifestyle

For his outstanding achievements and his unwavering efforts in educating, training, and motivating youths, prisoners, and professionals both locally and nationally, Menifee received numerous awards. He was given the key to the city on more than one occasion and has been honored by many other organizations, leaders and institutions. Menifee held directorships on the boards of numerous organizations in Georgia including APEX, Fulton County Board of Ethics, Health Planning and Review Board of the State of Georgia, SWAYBO Incorporated, Stepping Beyond, Inc., and the Atlanta Business League. Ed was also a member of Leadership Atlanta. Menifee’s life in Atlanta and work all started in Adamsville, SW Atlanta. SWAYBO started in Adamsville and still meets at the Adamsville C.T. Martin Recreational Center. The first office for BASICS started there. Menifee was well known by the whole community for doing great things for that community. There is great significance in placing the memorial sign at the bridge located at MLK Dr.-285 right in the Adamsville community. This honor is a result of the hard work of his children and the state representative of the area. 20

Breathe Easy 5K Run Walk DR. NGOZIKA ORJIOKE FOUNDED THE RACE TO HONOR HER FATHER
ARTICLE REGAN TOOMER
DR. NGOZIKA ORJIOKE WAS BORN IN 1968 IN SOUTHEAST NIGERIA IN IGBO DURING THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR. She was born behind a mud hut due to limited accommodations from the war. Her mother was a nurse and her father finished his training to become a diplomat and moved the family to India. She traveled the world for a couple of years and was given a cultural exposure that most are not able to experience in their lifetime. She attended boarding school for her formative years and then her family moved to England. After she graduated, her parents convinced her to attend medical school in Nigeria at the University of Calabar. After finishing her residency, she married, started a family and took a break from her medical studies. She worked for a couple of years and later moved to Australia and worked in emergency and clinical care. It was during that time that she applied for residency in the United States and took medical exams. “I decided it was time to chart my own destiny and have a say from a professional perspective,” Orjioke said. “Working for someone else didn’t quite give me the opportunity to do that.” She began to search for an underserved area in which to practice and settled in East Point, Georgia, where she opened Covenant Pulmonary Critical Care. She discovered a number of patients in that area who needed to be empowered about their health. She has always had a passion about lung cancer and was encouraged by the groundbreaking research on treatment over the years. “It was no longer a death sentence to have a diagnosis of lung cancer,” Orjioke said. She added that the face of lung cancer had changed from an old man who smoked all of his life, coughed incessantly, and suffered significant weight loss to young women who are non-smokers. “Studies have been done that show if you can do early screening for the high-risk group, you can catch these cancers early enough for you to do something and what you did is potentially a cure,” she said.
22
South Fulton Lifestyle | November 2019
People who qualify for lung cancer screenings typically range between ages 55 to 80 years old, smoke one pack of cigarettes daily for 30 years or a half a pack daily for 15 years. Orjioke finds it difficult to diagnose potential lung cancer given the surge in youth smoking e-cigarettes or vaping. “Based on the knowledge we have, we’re seeing that definitely it is associated with lung disease, but how that plays out in terms of lung cancer, I just don’t think we have enough data to add them to the list of people who need to be screened for lung cancer,” she said. Orjioke came up with the idea of a lung cancer 5K run/walk after she took up running to cope with her father’s death. She ran daily and participated in two to three 5K races monthly. After taking a two-year break from running, she thought the event would be motivation to resume the sport. The Breathe Easy 5K Run/Walk will occur on November 16, in partnership with the WellStar Foundation at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center South. The funds raised will benefit the underserved community for lung cancer screenings and exams. For more information visit Active.com. November 2019 | South Fulton Lifestyle

Is Your Heart Ready for Winter?
Dr. Melvin Echols 24
South Fulton Lifestyle | November 2019
WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING AND THE COLDER DAYS AHEAD, IT MAY BE A GOOD IDEA TO ADD A CHECK-UP FOR YOUR HEART TO YOUR LIST OF WINTER PREPARATIONS. Your body works harder when it’s cold, so winter can present challenges for people over 65, those who have had a heart attack, or people who have been diagnosed with heart disease. And not knowing your heart health status can lead to serious problems. Cold temperatures can cause blood vessels to contract and blood flow to speed up – that’s what helps keep you warm. But that can also increase your heart rate and blood pressure. Add in a new exercise routine or other vigorous outdoor activities, and you could have a recipe for disaster. Make sure your heart is ready for winter, and every season, with a thorough check-up. At the Camp Creek Comprehensive Care Center, we’ve brought expert primary and specialty care together under one roof. The cardiology team, led by Dr. Melvin Echols, make keeping your heart healthy convenient. No need to leave South Fulton - the Camp Creek Center’s state-of-the-art technology means testing, imaging, and top quality care are available just minutes from your home. If more complex testing or care is needed, Camp Creek physicians will be your guide to the array of Grady’s healthcare services - some of the best medical care in Atlanta. Make sure you’re winter ready – contact the Camp Creek Center for any health needs. Located at 3896 Princeton Lakes Way, the center offers comprehensive care for patients of all ages, including pediatrics,

GIVING: THE SECRET TO LIVING
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK
THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING TO OTHERS SHOULD NEVER BE UNDERSTATED, AND MANY SAY THAT THE SECRET TO LIVING IS GIVING. It’s not about what you do for yourself. It’s about how you’re able to better the lives of the people around you—your loved ones, the people in your community or the lives of people somewhere else in the world. The Atlanta Community Food Bank knows exactly what it means to give. In 2019, the Atlanta Community Food Bank celebrated its 40th anniversary of actively working to make sure children, adults, families and the elderly in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia have access to nutritious food. Following their mission to fight hunger by engaging, educating and empowering their community, the Food Bank distributes over 60 million meals to more than 755,000 people in 29 counties. Over a span of 40 years, the nonprofit organization has seen its reach grow from a single community kitchen in the basement of a local Atlanta Church, to working with over 600 partner agencies across 29 counties in North Georgia. Partner agencies range from food pantries, soup kitchens, senior programs and more. Because of this robust network, their partner agencies offer thousands of low-income Georgians groceries and nutritious meals. Nearly 30,000 volunteers donate their time to the Food Bank’s mission each year through a variety of activities and events, contributing over 81,000 hours of service. Volunteer service hours add the equivalent of

nearly 40 full-time staff, demonstrating how important community is to the Food Bank. By donating, volunteering, advocating and educating, our community has raised funds and awareness to help people struggling with hunger. Once you start giving back to your community, you’ll see that positive actions encourage others to get involved, too. Not only will your actions benefit those on the receiving end of your good deeds, but you’ll find a personal sense of joy and fulfillment through your generosity. Approximately 19% of all children in Fulton County are food insecure. Food insecurity is the lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate food. The Atlanta Community Food Bank is building a healthier, stronger community free of hunger. We need you to help us get there. Donate. Every dollar you donate helps provide four meals to hungry neighbors. 95% of your dollar goes directly toward helping Kyle Waide, President and CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, speaking at the Food Bank’s 40th Anniversary

C.J. MATTHEWS GIVES BACK! THE 12 YEAR OLD DONATES "BLANKIES 4 BUDDIES" ARTICLE KRISTEN WRIGHT-MATTHEWS
WHEN CHRIS MATTHEWS II—BETTER KNOWN TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY AS C.J. —WAS 5 YEARS OLD, HIS FAMILY EXPERIENCED A PREGNANCY LOSS. To help him cope with the loss, the Matthews’ family created a charitable program called Blankies 4 My Buddies that would help their young son honor his baby sister while providing an extra dose of comfort to sick and displaced children with cozy and colorful, child-themed blankets. At 12 years old, C.J. continues to host an annual collection of blankets via an ongoing GoFundMe campaign. He has donated thousands of blankets to children’s hospitals, shelters, orphanages, and in the streets from Charleston to Atlanta. “I wanted to help kids who felt like I did when my little sister Karsen didn’t come home, and also those who might feel lonely because that’s how I thought she felt,” said C.J. In 2017, C.J. received a $500 Disney Be Inspired grant from Youth Service America, which he used to launch “The Giving Bowl,” an annual charitable 7-on-7 flag football game that promotes kids playing football with the purpose of helping others. “I wanted to combine my love for football with my passion to help kids,” said C.J. During the game, children’s-themed blankets and nonperishable foods are collected. The first year, over 50 families were provided with food to help them through the holiday season, and that number doubled in 2018. Blankets have been donated to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Sunshine House, and other agencies that provide services to kids in need. This year, the event is scheduled for November 24, and C.J. hopes to get more local kids and families involved to play, volunteer and benefit from The Giving Bowl. “My vision is to make it a family affair, a day where families can come help, be helped, and have fun,” said C.J. Chris Matthews II was born in Charleston, and his family relocated to Atlanta in Summer 2015. He is currently a 7th grade student at Fulton Leadership Academy in East Point and plays on the 11U football team in Union City. He is also the proud big brother of 3-year-old Kollin, born when C.J. was 8 years old. For more information, donations or to volunteer, contact Kristen Wright Matthews at info@blankies4mybuddies.org or visit Blankies4MyBuddies.org.
