Let’s say that you have just spent the day shopping for a Halloween costume or visiting a pumpkin patch. Maybe you’ve been apple picking or have gone out for a hayride. After all that action, you’re probably ready for a deeply satisfying meal. You would be hard pressed to find a better stop than the Pourhouse in downtown Loveland. Owner Chris Kline prides his business on being a place that is universally appealing and perfect for almost any occasion. And what a better occasion to visit the Pourhouse than enjoying their signature fall offering? The kitchen at the Pourhouse is offering a luscious coulette sirloin steak served with a pumpkin risotto. The steak is aged 35 days for exceptional tenderness and the risotto is creamy, rich, and satisfying with pumpkin in the sauce. This type of gourmet offering is best completed with one of their fantastic craft, on-tap, brews. Seasonal offerings that include Oktoberfest/Marzen beers and pumpkin ales on draft will be a great go-to as well if you

They usually offer a barrel train ride, built by her sons with 55-gallon barrels that are pulled with a lawn tractor. There’s a little seat, a toy steering wheel, and the kid’s love it. Unfortunately, the train ride and the hayrides will have to be skipped this year. “We’ve also had a couple of different 4-H clubs come over the years and set up a petting zoo,” she says. “They’ve brought different animals such as donkeys, lambs, and goats. I don’t know if they are coming this year; it depends on their own regulations. It’s a huge money maker for our 4-H clubs and I would hate for them not to have it.” Since many children will be doing school remotely this fall, Pam encourages parents to bring their children to the farm as a learning experience. They can see where the pumpkins grow and observe the older scales, unlike the ones in grocery stores. "It’s important for kids to see where their food comes from because we all tend to take it for granted. Parents can say, "You know those green beans you eat for dinner at night? Well, it’s people like this who are growing them for you,"" Pam says. “My family and I, we do this all together now. Everyone finds their niche, and it's ours.”

Healing Mind, Body, and Spirit HOW HOPE LIVES! SUPPORTS THE BREAST CANCER JOURNEY IN NORTHERN COLORADO WHILE FIGHTING AN ARDUOUS BATTLE WITH BREAST CANCER IN 2001, LOCAL BUSINESSWOMAN LYDIA DODY WAS LED TO REACH OUT TO MANY COMPLEMENTARY CARE PROVIDERS. She needed help to ease her chemotherapy side effects and endure the physical, psychological and emotional components of her treatments. These services improved her recovery and quality of life so much that it moved her to start ‘Hope Lives! The Lydia Dody Breast Cancer Support Center’ to help others in treatment. Hope Lives! partners with patients in active treatment for breast cancer in Larimer and Weld counties through providing care, guidance, and education. We provide free holistic health services such as acupuncture, lymphatic massage, counseling, physical therapy and more along with lifestyle support services such as house cleaning, mastectomy supplies, wigs, yoga and more. We serve as a partner as our clients heal in mind, body, and spirit. Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women, as one in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease in her lifetime. We are honored to be supportive of these courageous women and we are looking forward to celebrating our 20th anniversary next year to honor the thousands of women we have helped. Our providers play an integral role in our clients’ path to wellness as well. Our friends Holly and Michelle at Integrative Acupuncture Clinic said, “Acupuncture allows us to alleviate symptoms and side effects from cancer treatments. We are grateful to be able to support the women in our community and help them alongside their cancer journey. We celebrate milestones with them and hold space alongside them during those challenging times.” Biofeedback therapist Jen Strating said, “I provide biofeedback therapy to Hope Lives! clients to help them manage their stress on their healing journey. My experience with Hope Lives! has always been rewarding and inspirational. I appreciate all the great services the organization provides their courageous and amazing clients." 26
Loveland + South Lifestyle | October 2020
As we all are painfully aware, 2020 has been an extremely challenging year for all of us. We are 100% reliant upon our very generous northern Colorado community for support, and world events have limited our normal in-person fundraising efforts. We welcome opportunities to partner with businesses or individuals on fundraising efforts, forming new provider connections, volunteering, or other avenues of support. We are currently encouraging local businesses to create fundraising events in their businesses in October to honor breast cancer awareness and raise funds for the women we serve at Hope Lives!. We look forward to increasing awareness of our organization and continuing to form new relationships in our community. Now more than ever our residents affected by breast cancer need us! As one client said, “Just the idea of Hope Lives! and how so many caring people could donate for someone like me lifted my spirits and actually gave me something to look forward to during treatment.” Another client said that our care has been “the bright light on a brutal path.” For more information on services we provide, becoming a new client or provider, or to donate to our very important cause, please visit our website at hopelives.org. You can also donate by texting HOPELIVES!2020 to 443-21 or Venmo @hopelives. And don’t forget about us on Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday, December 8. Each $50 donation pays for one service for a client, but no donation is ever too small.
“To all who support or have contributed in any way, please know that your generosity has been the bright light on a brutal path. You have made a difference. You are appreciated.”
“Finding Hope Lives, meeting the lovely people who work there, and using the services they provided was one of the best things that came out of this whole cancer journey.”
“Women fighting this battle need access to modalities that enrich self-care, strength and other services during this time of struggle.” “Just the idea of Hope Lives! and how so many caring people could donate for someone like me lifted my spirits and actually gave me something to look forward to during treatment.” CityLifestyle.com/LovelandandSouth

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.
+
Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create
several
different
looks with combinations of metallic and flat paint. Make extra creepy “oozing” pumpkins by allowing paint to run down the sides.
+
Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!

LOCAL’S CHOICE
Fall Lunch, Perfected.
SOUP IS A PERENNIAL FAVORITE WHEN IT COMES FALL EATS. It’s the perfect, obvious cure for cooler and shorter days. What’s better is that this season brings an entire harvest of flavors. One of our favorites is butternut squash. It’s a little sweet and richer than summer squash, and it makes a wonderfully satisfying soup. The best thing about butternut squash soup is that it’s very versatile and you can make it your own. Feel free to spice it up with a pinch of cayenne pepper or add roasted pumpkin seeds to maximize the fall flavors. Here are some great toppings to garnish your butternut squash soup with. + Sour Cream: putting a small dollop of sour cream enriches the butternut squash soup, making it even creamier.

+ Bacon: You can't go wrong with bacon. Topping your soup with crunchy bacon only enhances the flavor of the soup. + Chives: Finely chop up some chives and serve them on the soup or leave them long as a stylish garnish. + Nutmeg: Sprinkling nutmeg to your butternut squash soup gives the soup the ultimate fall flavor. Adding ground cinnamon takes the flavor to the next level. + Cilantro: Sprinkle chopped cilantro leaves over the top of the soup to add a dash of citrus flare. + Coconut milk: A great way to still enjoy the enriched creamy taste without the calories. + Heavy cream: Not worried about calories? Heavy cream will provide the ultimate fall comfort food feel to this amazing soup. + Cheese: Blue cheese crumbles or shredded Parmesan add an undeniable richness. Chopped nuts and dried fruits can make for an even more complex flavor palette. When it comes time for fall, the cravings for nostalgic activities, cozy atmospheres, and satisfying comfort food are in full swing. Between all the activities going on and the cooler, shorter days, the time is never better for some warm satisfying food inspired by the season. What sounds better than down home, scratch-made salads, sandwiches, and soups? At The Lunchbox in Johnstown, they’re serving up all three with a side of small town sentiments. A downtown staple, The Lunchbox has been serving up counter spot lunchtime favorites in Johnstown since they opened roughly 11 years ago. From pastrami reubens to temping salads, they have you covered for lunch. This time of year, one item especially stands out-- their chef-made butternut squash soup. A savory, creamy, hot bowl of this rich and satisfying soup is exactly what you need in the middle of a crisp October day. It’s perfect as a side to the ever reliable grilled cheese sandwich or standing alone as a light, but satisfying, lunch. Owner, Jennifer Adkisson, has always aimed to please. After taking over the restaurant in the stead of her brother and other family members, the operation has become an all female affair. “Our regulars call us the moms-- and we are. It’s a bunch of moms here serving food," Jennifer explains. That only adds to the down home, comforting vibe developed by The Lunchbox.
