It's a shame that the Festival of the Little Hills had to be cancelled this year, due to concerns for the spread of COVID-19. It is especially impactful on the many non-profit organizations who count on the festival as part of their fundraising efforts. If you'd like to consider making a donation to these organizations, they are listed on the festival's website: festivalofthelittlehills.com. Dr. Kennedy has proven to be a leader in her profession. She was selected to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association’s Power of 10 (a group of 10 veterinarians in the State of Missouri identified as leaders in the industry). She is currently chairman of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association New Graduate Forum which provides guidance to new graduate veterinarians. Pet Health Center offers vaccinations, preventative care exams, dental exams, x-rays, general surgery, lab tests, heart worm & parasite testing and microchipping. In addition to in-office services, Dr. Kennedy offers home visits for the convenience of pets and their owners. Home visits can minimize the stress of driving to a clinic and can provide care for patients who are not physically able to travel. During the months of July and August, first time examinations are free for new clients. Dr. Kennedy's husband, Chris, is a veterinarian as well. Their goal is to have him join the practice in the near future. They currently reside in Cottleville with their “fur babies,” including a golden retriever, a husky and two orange tabby cats. For more information, call 636-447-4555 or check out her Facebook page @dr.brittanykennedy and Instagram at #drbrittanykennedy, where she offers pet parent tips.

OF SHANNON COUNTY FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS. No one knows exactly the origin of these horses, but it is believed that their ancestors were domesticated horses who were set free during the Great Depression, by farmers who could not afford to feed them. And so they lived, reproduced, and died on land that is a part of the Mark Twain National Forest. The Missouri Wild Horse League, founded in 1992, oversees the management of the four herds. The 30 or so horses, found mostly on lands of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways (surrounding the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers) may look like domesticated horses, but it is important to remember that they are wild. They will kick, bite, and throw their head without warning. Therefore, it is recommended to view the horses from a minimum of 40 feet (about school bus length) and avoid the temptation to feed or pet them. It is for their safety. We can enjoy them from a distance to respect their wildness. They make for beautiful photos, as the work of Photographer

Ross (HollyRossPhotography.

She suggests using a telephoto lens to get that “up close” feel. “Many feel they want to get close to the horses, which endangers all,” she says. “Remember, too, that there are ticks, mosquitos, gnats (lots), mountain lions, bear, wild boar, copperheads, and rattlesnakes that share this habitat.”

She says the best times for viewing the horses are sunrise and just before sunset. She also points out that the roads to the fields where these horses are often found are not paved (unless you are viewing the Round Springs/Echo Bluff herd) and are not always in good shape. The road to Klepzig Mill, for instance, is a road that has large rocks and deep ruts in the one lane road, making it the most difficult to traverse. For those who want to learn more about the horses and how to find them, contact Jim Smith at Cross Country Trail Rides in Eminence and/or follow the Missouri Wild Horse League on Facebook. The League conducts periodic roundups when the herds reach the federally mandated fifty animals. These horses, after being vet-checked and, if necessary, gelded, are adopted to horse lovers through Jim at CCTR.

Using privately donated funds, the Saint Louis Zoo Association purchased 425 acres in north St. Louis County (Spanish Lake) in 2018.
“WE ARE ON A MISSION BECAUSE WE HAVE A ZOO THAT WE HAVE TO CARE FOR BUT WE ALSO HAVE A FUTURE THAT WE NEED TO BUILD A FOUNDATION FOR.”

with nature and animals. “There is so much work to be done over the next few years, but this will give us space to breed animals and an incredible opportunity to experience species in habitats that may be incredibly similar to going on safari,” she says. An exciting new exhibit at the Saint Louis Zoo is the Primate Canopy Trails, an $11.5 million, 35,000-square-foot outdoor expansion of the Primate House. Construction began in 2019 and is scheduled to open in 2021. Primate Canopy Trails will consist of eight new outdoor homes for primates – lemurs, Old World monkeys and New World monkeys. "Being outside is critical for primates' well-being, and this new habitat is a demonstration of the Zoo's commitment to providing quality animal care," says Heidi Hellmuth, Curator of Primates. Another exciting development coming soon to the Zoo is the birth of a new baby elephant! Asian elephant Rani is due to give birth this Summer. The Zoo’s bull elephant, 27-year-old Raja, is the father. He was the first Asian elephant ever born at the Zoo in 1992, and this calf will be his fifth offspring. There are so many awe-inspiring aspects of the Saint Louis Zoo, and now we add its leaders, like Cassandra Brown Ray, to the list. She is truly an inspirational leader, to the community as well as to her own two children, who no doubt admired her ability and motivation to earn her MBA while well into her career. She says they would all sit and study together in the evenings. Her kids, who graduated from Francis Howell Central H.S., have now both earned their college degrees. Cassandra truly leads by example. She currently lives in St. Peters with her husband Quentin - her high school sweetheart – and their pugapoo, Yoda. 20

Praise your child’s efforts. Allow coaches and officials to do their jobs. If you feel an error was made, remember it's a tough job, and we all make mistakes. Realize it'll probably come out in the wash. Cheer on your child and her team. Don’t put down the other team’s players, and be courteous and respectful of the other team’s fans.
When talking with your child about a game, point out specific displays of sportsmanship that took place to show the difference between being a good sport and a poor one. If your child isn’t enjoying the sport, don’t force him to stay in it. For many children, team sports aren’t the answer. Help find another activity or a solo sport that is more suited to him. Set up a sportsmanship recognition program for your child’s team offering Certificates of Outstanding Sportsmanship to players who set examples of being a good sport. If a child is struggling with sportsmanship, look for opportunities to help her brush up on her skills, and reward accordingly as reinforcement. MOROCCAN GRAPE AND
GRILLED CHICKEN BOWLS WITH GRAPE VINAIGRETTE
IT HAS BECOME EVEN MORE IMPORTANT TO BOOST OUR BODY’S IMMUNE SYSTEM THROUGH A HEALTHY DIET AND HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT NEW FOCUS FOR PEOPLE THESE DAYS. One key dietary recommendation is to eat more fruits and vegetables every day to improve immune function and prevent heart disease and diabetes. If you want to guide your family to healthier snacks and meals or simply trying to add variety to your at-home menu, that can be as simple as rethinking the ingredients you choose to use, including your favorite produce, such as grapes. Fresh grapes make for an ideal snack because they’re tasty, healthy, hydrating and refreshing, but grapes can also be used to make nutritious dishes that are also satisfying and delicious. Grapes of all colors – red, green and black – are a natural source of beneficial antioxidants and other polyphenols. Plus, they’re naturally fat-free, cholesterol-free and contain virtually no sodium. Try these recipes below from GrapesFromCalifornia.com to pair hearthealthy grapes with other nutritious ingredients to add variety and fresh appeal to your family meals.
