ESCAPE TO SURF AND SAND WITHOUT LEAVING HOME! THE "QUEEN OF THE BEACH READ" RELEASES HER LATEST BOOK

NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR, MARY KAY ANDREWS, IS WELL ACQUAINTED WITH PAGE TURNING BOOKS. She is known as the queen of beach reads and has penned 29 books, including her newly released, “Hello Summer.” I had the chance to interview the prolific, personable author for her St. Louis County Library book signing of 2019’s “Sunset Beach.” Mary Kay tells me: “There’s a tiny bit of my DNA in each of my protagonists.” Indeed, readers will find a bit of the former newspaper reporter in Conley Hawkins, the main character in “Hello Summer,” as well as her leading lady, Drue Campbell, in “Sunset Beach.” Romance, scandal and mystery unfold in each storyline. Both are tough to put down, quick reads and perfect for those lazy summer days. “The ultimate for me is to have a reader say, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got a book hangover!!’ “ laughs Andrews. What I enjoy about interviewing authors is learning how they write. For “Sunset Beach,” Mary Kay, who lives in Georgia, rented a cottage in Sunset Beach, Florida, to get her inspiration. She’s also into home renovating and is quite the chef! Her recipes can be found in her aptly named “Beach House Cookbook.” Watch our conversation at HECMedia.org. Andrews’ books are available on Amazon, the St. Louis County library and most book stores. Check out Mary Kay Andrew’s library of books at MaryKayAndrews.com.

THE UNUSUAL SITUATION PROMPTED BY SCHOOL SHUTDOWNS DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC SURE REARRANGED THOSE LISTS FOR 2020 GRADUATES. But local seniors didn’t let that stop them! Some seniors organized a time to park their vehicles at school parking lots to take a different type of class photo. Parades with decorated vehicles occurred. Lots of marathon chats were conducted. Others made time to still go to schools to jump off their favorite iconic spots or to throw their graduation hats into the air. Yet others drew up a different type of Senior Bucket List while under quarantine. To some degree, this year’s lists reflected a nod back to many childhood favorite activities, a different sort of completing a loop in life. The 2020 Bucket List items included activities such as: 28

MARK TWAIN RIVERBOAT CRUISE For a step back in history, climb aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat in Hannibal, Missouri, for a daytime or a dinner cruise. The paddleboat evokes memories of a time on the Mississippi River when ladies with parasols and smoothtalking gamblers strolled the decks watching the tree-covered bluffs and sandbars drift by. “We want visitors to experience what called Mark Twain to write his books,” says Captain Steve Terry. “I know that most people are seeing this for the first time, and I like to tell the story of the river. The day cruises include narrations about points of interest along the river. The dinner cruises include entertainment with a bit of history while passengers enjoy a buffet. Call 573-221-3222 or visit MarkTwainRiverboat.com. LADY LIBERTY AND GOIN’ JESSI Big Cedar Lodge, Ridgedale, Mo., nestled in the Ozark Mountains on Table Rock Lake features the Lady Liberty, a custom-built 65-foot luxury yacht that captures the beauty of a by-gone era. Experience the lake than on a brunch or dinner cruise, then relax on the spacious, open-air upper deck and let the cares of the day drift away. For a shorter excursion, cruise the lake on the “Goin’ Jessi,” an exact replica of a 1934 Chris Craft named after Waylon Jennings’s wife, Jessi.
Big Muddy Adventures
Call 800-225-6343 or visit BigCedar.com. BIG MUDDY ADVENTURES With the Mississippi, Missouri and Meramec Rivers flowing around St. Louis, the city can be considered an island, and the Big Muddy Adventure Company wants to make sure residents get up close and personal with the rivers. Big Muddy shuttles passengers to the Chain of Rocks Bridge. They row over to Mosenthein Island where lunch is served, then paddle downriver to the Arch. Once a month, the company has a “lunar” night float with a celebrity chef who cooks dinner on the island. “We heard this myth from our grandparents not to go near the river because it’s dangerous,” says Canoe Captain Joe Holstein. “WE have allowed industry to dominate the riverfront making it hard to access.” Big Muddy Adventures wants to show the beauty of the river and allow passengers to relieve their stresses and enjoy nature. The company also has ‘Paddle and Pedal” trips along the Missouri, and float trips with canoes or kayaks on the Meramec. For more information, call 314-896-4BMA or visit 2Muddy.com. At press time, pandemic rules were still changing, so we suggest that you call each of these companies to see if the dates you want are available. Each company advises making reservations several weeks in advance. CityLifestyle.com/ Chesterfield

"Something To Sing About" ST. LOUIS TEEN TALKS ABOUT LIFE BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER "THE VOICE."
SHE HAS A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY IN FRONT OF HER AND INCREDIBLY SUPPORTIVE FAMILY AND FRIENDS AROUND HER. 19-year-old, Kirkwood resident, Joanna Serenko, talks about life before, during, and after “The Voice.” MUSICAL INFLUENCES MY MOM INTRODUCED ME TO MUSIC. By six, I was taking piano and voice lessons. I discovered my love for performing through recitals and musicals. During my sophomore year of high school, I began writing and playing original music. I found my style through the influences of many different genres and people. Today, my music taste is eclectic and random. I love to experience new music in a way so that it becomes a part of me.

PLAN B I was planning to attend Maryville University last August. Like many first-year college students, I didn’t know exactly what I was going to study. I was leaning toward health sciences because my mom is a nurse, and I care about people’s well-being. I planned to study health science while working on finding new opportunities in music. Then, producers of “The Voice” contacted me. OPPORTUNITY CALLS I received an email from producers of “The Voice” inviting me to a private audition for the upcoming Season 18. I had tried out for “The Voice” previously but did not advance past the second audition. This time, producers of the show reached out to me, so it seemed promising. My boyfriend, Tyler Dale, a musician in St. Louis and I drove to Louisville for the audition last June. AND SO, IT BEGINS I was having a great time in Los Angeles with the other singers preparing for Season 18. Before I knew it, the Blind Audition rolled around. I was nervous. But looking back on it, the Blind Audition was probably the easiest of the rounds. All I had to do was go on stage and show what I could do. If I could turn one chair, I would move on. I didn’t have to worry about competing against anybody or preparing a song that I didn’t know.

Ripples that don’t support disparities among Americans regarding education, income and health care. Ripples that stamp out reverse-discrimination in support of holistic tolerance and honest motivations. Ripples that result from actively contributing to community initiatives that accentuate inclusion.
Ripples that lead to accountability. We need ripples resulting from letting down our old guards and opening up our new mindsets. We need all of us working on positive multipliers that will help lift the goodness of America, which used to be referenced as mutual respect and “opportunity for all.” We need ripples that don’t just gently move across the surface, but also rattle our cores and alter our behaviors. At Lifestyle Publications, our goal is to continue to gain understanding and to be the change. We mourn with the family of Mr. George Floyd, and we pray for those who needlessly lost loved ones and for those hurting emotionally during this difficult time. We’re praying for positive changes in this country and for united hearts.
