Letter from the Editor EVERY YEAR, AS THE HOLIDAY SEASON COMES AROUND, I START TO FEEL A SENSE OF EXCITEMENT AND ANTICIPATION FOR THE SPIRIT THIS SEASON BRINGS. I love December. It is a whirlwind of festivities, but there is so much nostalgia built from the traditions that I took from my childhood and have carried over to my family. For me, watching my children experience that joy is what makes this season so magical.

The smell of a burnt match still brings me right back to the lighting of the advent wreath each morning in elementary school. We all loved that it gave us a good 10 minutes of time out of class. However, for me, decorating the tree was my favorite Christmas tradition. My mom let all 10 of us kids “help” her decorate, and let me tell you, that tree was quite a sight. With tinsel clumped together everywhere and several ornaments hanging within a few inches of each other, it was not the prettiest of trees to anyone outside of our family, but to me,

DIY Holiday Wreath Place Cards ARTICLE AUDREY KUETHER – OHSOLOVELYBLOG.COM

Johnson County Lifestyle | December 2019
I’M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR UNIQUE WAYS TO UPDATE MY HOLIDAY TABLE DECOR TO LIVEN UP HOLIDAY DINNERS. Instead of the same table settings I’ve used in the past, I wanted to try something new—enter my DIY holiday wreath place cards. I love the look of simple modern wreaths, but what I love even more are miniature versions. After some quick shopping on Amazon (as well as in my holiday decor stash at home), I had everything I needed to make my wreaths.
Supplies
“I LOVE THE LOOK OF SIMPLE MODERN WREATHS, BUT WHAT I LOVE EVEN MORE ARE MINIATURE VERSIONS.” Name tags
The Supply List + Artificial pine cone picks + Faux greenery (with some “ice” sparkle) + Gold metal hoops (set of 10: 2-inch, 3-inch and 6-inch) + Gold metal hoops (set of 10: 4-inch) + Pliers and gold wire or hot glue gun (not pictured) + Craft/baking twine + Paper and pen or design software and printer + Hole punch

Steps I started with a 4-inch metal hoop and sparkled greenery, which I pulled off the stems to make into smaller pieces. I originally thought it would be easier to use my pliers and gold wire to attach the greenery to the hoops, but I quickly realized that a glue gun is much easier. After placing the greenery over the mini hoops where they looked good to me, I then hot-glued one line of glue to one side of the hoop and pressed one greenery strand to it until the glue dried. Adding a little more hot glue to the backside secured the greenery in place. Once I was happy with the placement, I moved on to the other side of the wreath. I like a slightly asymmetrical look, so I opted for a shorter section of greenery on the left side. I cut a strand of baking twine (approximately 5 to 6 inches), ran it through the punched hole and attached it to the hoop. How simple and cute is that? These DIY holiday wreath place cards will look classic and festive in any place setting from Thanksgiving through winter. If you want to keep it even more simple, you could simply fold some card stock into a small folded place card. 14
Johnson County Lifestyle | December 2019
Ready for More? Let’s do another look using the same supplies with the addition of the artificial pine cone and berry picks. I followed the same steps as above but used the greenery picks instead. I hot glued one pick to the hoop until secure from the front and back side. Next, I added in another pick to my liking. It felt a bit sparse, so I glued a small pinecone and a couple of extra berries to the hoop. That’s it! These DIY holiday mini wreaths are just sooo easy! They look super cute and festive in the table setting. I love the pop of red! What do you think? Will you be making any of these DIY holiday wreath place cards for your next gathering? I highly recommend it!

BARBARA, WILLIAM, ROXANE AND LULA HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON. They’re all thrilled with Travanse Senior Living in Olathe. “If you’re like me, before purchasing anything, I read what others say about the product,” says Executive Director Tom Inderhees. “I encourage anyone considering Travanse to search us online and read our reviews. They’ll find a great many positive responses.” With 21 years in the industry, Inderhees believes that Travanse has carved a unique niche in the senior living market, in part because of its clever conversion of the former Holiday Inn Express off I-35 and 151st into a new 135-room senior living facility with a $22 million renovation. More importantly, Travanse has invested in the right staff to deliver compassionate and quality care to its senior residents.

We encourage people to stop by and see the remarkable changes.” Inderhees stresses the importance of ensuring quality resident care while maintaining a safe environment. “We have a culture of community from leaders to staff to the residents themselves. We ensure our associates are respected and treated well, and they in turn treat our residents that way.” A noteworthy program at Travanse is called “Vibrant Life,” allowing residents to create their own schedules to connect with family, friends and the community. “This program truly inspires, challenges – even dares – residents to be adventurous through wide-ranging optional outings tailored to their interests, preferences, routines and abilities,” Inderhees says. For residents requiring memory care, Travanse offers “Generations Memory Care,” a program embracing a person-centric culture that emphasizes the whole person – who they were and still are – and not identified by disease or behavior. “We offer unparalleled care to celebrate the abilities of those we serve. Our care partners complete extensive certified training to better support residents living with memory loss. We emphasize techniques, teachable moments and meaningful engagement to make connections with each individual.” Travanse is partnering with Legacy Healthcare and plans to be fully operational by year’s end. “Legacy Healthcare is one of the nation’s largest therapist-owned and operated contract rehabilitation companies. It provides clinical programs for residents, including memory care, pain management, falls prevention and dysphagia management services. Does diligence detract from a settlement?
Most individuals who are facing a divorce or family law matter desire a settlement. There are few individuals who would actually want a trial or evidentiary hearing in their case. A trial or evidentiary hearing is almost always expensive from a financial perspective, can sometimes result in appeals (which can cost more money) and can also cause stress, anxiety, anguish and other emotions. At the same time, many think that being diligent and preparing their case for a trial or evidentiary hearing detracts for settlement. To settle, many individuals would prefer that their lawyers do little or no work on their matter. They think that the lawyer should just get the case done and not worry about being diligent. Obviously, if the case is entirely settled, there might not be much work that needs to be done when compared to a litigated divorce or family law matter. At the same time, even when there is an entire settlement out of the gates, there is still a basic amount of diligence and competence required, like getting essential documents and information needed to ensure the settlement agreement can be put into writing and to verify that the settlement is not uncon-
scionable (so that it is approved by the family court judge). But in many cases, there is not a comprehensive settlement that has been reached from the beginning. Instead, there is simply a desire to settle without an agreement on all issues. Some parties might agree on some of the items at issue, but to settle a divorce for example, there needs to be a settlement on all issues from property and debt division, child custody, child support, spousal support and attorneys’ fees and costs. Thus, if their lawyer obtains the financial records that they need to prepare their case, many are resistant. Since they want to settle, they do not wish to give to their attorney important items such as tax returns, paycheck stubs, deeds, vehicle titles, account statements and other important documents. If the value of a home or a business is in dispute, many may not want their attorney to be diligent by getting the value appraised. They may not want an appraisal because they want to settle. They may think that getting an appraisal can inflame the situation or cause the cost to increase needlessly. If there are other important witnesses in the case, they might not want depositions to take place in their case as well. The thought, again, is that they want to settle. Therefore, they do not
want their attorney to be diligent by setting depositions. The examples are really endless in terms of the ways a party might not want their attorney to be diligent in the name of settling the case. The problem for these parties, however, is that if the case does not settle, their lawyer will not be prepared for trial. It is true as well that peace can oftentimes only be obtained in some cases through ensuring the other party knows the other party’s lawyer is prepared for a trial if the case does not settle. While many parties might believe that diligence detracts to settlement, the truth is that being diligent can help the case settle. And if a settlement is not possible, for whatever reason, it ensures that all the eggs are not put in one basket. the gift of family FOR THE LOVE OF FOSTERING 20
Johnson County Lifestyle | December 2019

ECEIVING GIFTS BRINGS FORTH A CHAIN OF EMOTIONS, ANYWHERE FROM MYSTERY TO ANTICIPATION TO JOY. Having a family is much like being the recipient of these gifts in its unpredictability and surprises. For Matt and Mary Evans, their family is an ever-evolving string of gifts full of love, security and respite within a population whose needs are continuously growing. Growing up with cousins who were adopted out of foster care, Mary Evans was always aware of the needs of foster families and understood the impact it could have on children’s lives. “Knowing how many children there are that have nowhere to go, and how many families are out there that are struggling who just need a little bit of assistance to keep their family safe and together has always been heavy on my heart,” Mary says. It is this vision that led them to fostering. At any given time, between two to eight children share their home, and she notes that finding the joys in fostering is the thing that keeps most foster families going. “[We find joy] in seeing children that come from very difficult places become successful, loving children and young adults; building positive relationships with the biological families; and helping so many families recover from their own abusive pasts and helping them get their children back home.” They currently have four children in the home ranging from four months to 17
WANT TO HELP? Volunteer opportunities are available at the KVC warehouse in Olathe. The schedule is on their Facebook page, @KVC Olathe Warehouse Volunteers. “Not everyone is called to foster or adopt, but I believe everyone is called to do something,” says Katie Reaser, who oversees the warehouse. “Whether that means bringing a foster family a meal every week, providing rides for foster families, dropping clothes/diapers/toys off on their porch washed and ready, or to giving financially each month to a foster/adoption care ministry. It’s all important and vital to making the transition as smooth as possible.” For more information visit:

Mary is quick to say that anyone who has a heart for children and families should consider fostering and that there is flexibility in ages and needs. She suggests not to buy into the myths surrounding fostering and rather rely on others who have experienced the fulfillment it can offer. She explains the process as being a relatively easy one that begins with contacting a licensing agency in which to partner in fostering. CONTINUED >

Rehearsals quickly moved from the garage to the basement as Scout Matthews’ family renovated their home to create a space just for the band. They perfected their sound, wrote original music and recreated cover songs from their favorite rock artists that spanned decades, which prepared them to perform in front of crowds of all ages across Kansas City and beyond. Scout Matthews plays bass, Nate Gregory plays lead guitar and both Caroline Armstrong and Jolson Roberts sing lead vocals. Roberts also plays the guitar, keys and sax; and Gavin Roberts and Jack Armstrong, both siblings to the singers, share the drums. Matthews says, “Nate, Carolyn and I are 15, and both drummers are 13. Jolson is 18 and the only one who can legally drive. We used to be known as these cute kids that happened to play music, but we’ve definitely turned a corner, and now we’re known as musicians that just happened to be kids. We’re still pretty cute, too!”

“For the future, I hope to see that next step, playing in front of hundreds of people and hearing people sing along with us,” Gregory says. “I want to go on a tour with a big name as their opener. Of course, yes, we want to be the one in lights, but everyone has to start somewhere—we’re just working hard to get there really fast.” Armstrong says, “You never know what the future holds, but I’m hoping for lots of gigs and getting our songs out there. As for the big picture, I don’t think any of us knows yet—we’re hopeful.” Matthews says, “I want to say a huge THANK YOU to our parents, siblings and friends who have supported, counseled and encouraged us on this wild ride. We don’t know what the future holds, but we have learned to hold onto each other, believe in ourselves and our music. With our families and friends lifting us up, we can do anything!” Listen to their three original songs on all streaming services and stay tuned for the release of their first EP.
