AROUND TOWN
WILLIAMSON COUNTY WELCOMED 1.81 MILLION VISITORS IN 2019 A record 1.81 million visitors were welcomed to Williamson County in 2019, a 5.3% increase from the 1.72 million visitors in 2018. That marks the fifth consecutive year that the county has outpaced the national average for tourism growth, which in 2019 was 1.7% according to the US Travel Association. Last year the 119-room Harpeth Hotel opened in downtown Franklin, along with three other new hotel properties in Williamson County, bringing the total number of available hotel rooms to 5,562. Other contributing factors to increased visitation were a steady rise in meetings, conventions, and youth and amateur sports tournaments in Williamson County, along with continued growth of signature events like Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival, Main Street Festival, Dickens of a Christmas, and others. The city of Franklin received notable national media coverage from Reader’s Digest naming Franklin among the “Most Romantic Small Towns in the United States” and “The South’s Best Small Towns,” while Forbes heralded Franklin among the “17 Most Beautiful Places to Travel in Spring” and “Best Spring Break Vacations for Adventure Seeking Travelers.” VisitFranklin.com

The Fund’s first allocations focused on direct financial assistance, and the second round focused on COVID19’s contributing factors, such as food insecurity, suicide prevention and domestic violence. The most recent allocations were the first with a strong geographic component. The COVID-19 Response Fund is housed at United Way of Greater Nashville, in partnership with Mayor John Cooper’s office and local corporate and philanthropic partners. Since March, the Fund has allocated $3,525,000 of the $5,066,326 raised into the community. 100 percent of the Fund goes to nonprofits to help individuals impacted by COVID-19 and agencies that need organizational support.

BAKED PARMESAN
TOMATOES TOMATOES ARE A SUPERFOOD. They are nutrient dense and including tomatoes in your diet has powerful health benefits. D’Laine Jones, Chief Operating Officer, Northwest Florida, Tennessee and Alabama, Metabolic Research Center (MRC) said, “Tomatoes are linked to reduced risk of heart disease and cancer due to the antioxidant lycopene. They are also a great source of Vitamin C, potassium, Vitamin K, Folate (Vitamin B9) and fiber. Tomatoes are also one of the easiest plants to grow as a new gardener.” The recipes below from MRC are two great ways to get more tomato in your eats.
INGREDIENTS + 2 oz Parmesan cheese, shaved + 2 oz Mozzarella cheese, shredded + 16 oz ripe tomatoes (2 to 3 small to medium sized), any variety + ¼ C. fresh chopped basil + Minced garlic (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400° F. 2. Using a food scale, weigh out 16 oz. of tomatoes and slice tomatoes into thick slices 3. Arrange tomato slices on a parchment lined baking sheet, and set aside. 4. In a bowl, combine all cheese and garlic. 5. Divide the cheese and garlic mixture evenly over the top of each slice. 6. Bake for 8-10 minutes in a preheated oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly. 7. Remove from the oven, and top each slice with freshly chopped basil. 8. Serve while still hot, and enjoy! How To Organize Your Playroom
24
Franklin Lifestyle | August 2020
ARTICLE LIZ JENKINS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
BACK TO SCHOOL IS AN AWESOME TIME TO REVAMP YOUR PLAYROOM! We took this playroom from piles to smiles with these Crate & Kids stacking cubbies (white plastic bins from Container Store), great zones for all the activities, a project table and lots of labels! Take advantage of the kids (hopefully!) going back to school to really go through and make decisions about what truly is deserving of a place in the playroom and what is just clutter. Creating zones for each of the activities is our primary recommendation when setting up an organized playroom. Typical zones often include: arts & crafts, pretend play, dress up, puzzles & games, Legos or similar, and a reading nook. We like to use the corners for zones, set up shelving in the closet if there is one to store overflow or infrequently used items, and contain groups in easy to use containers for little hands. PRO TIPS BEFORE BRINGING IN THE BINS AND CUBBIES: + group like with like so you can see how many of each thing you have + toss the damaged, worn, stained + tuck away the precious but outgrown items in a memory bin + edit out anything that doesn’t get played with (and bin up things for younger siblings to grow in to) + create your zones once you see your volume THEN contain & label! We love using sturdy bins with clear labels - and picture labels can be a super way to help with reading comprehension and, of course, overall cuteness! Remember to keep things down at the kids level so they can not only get things out but also put them away. We really encourage parents to follow the Montessori methods of self-sufficiency when creating children’s spaces. A FRESH SPACE 615.509.1933 AFreshSpace.com CityLifestyle.com/Franklin

It’s loaded with culture - museums, art galleries, performing arts venues give Sarasota the nickname of Florida’s Cultural Coast. The Florida Studio Theatre, Sarasota Orchestra, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, The Players Centre, The Ringling Art Museum and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens are just a few of the places to don your artistic hat. Or course, no trip is complete without good eats. Overture, located in downtown’s Art Ovation Hotel is an upscale treat. You can use a timer and do each of these exercises for 30 seconds each and see how many quality repetitions you can complete within the 30 seconds. This workout style will help improve both strength and cardio.”

GLUTE BRIDGE LIFTS
01.
Start on your back with your legs bent and feet flat on the floor (feet and knees together). Then pull your toes up off the floor so that you are holding your body weight in your heels. From there, you will lift your hips to a full extension and hold your hips up for 2-3 seconds then return back your starting position. A more advanced version of this is doing it on one leg. Your other leg will extended out while keeping your knees together.Â

down close to the floor.
MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS Mountain climbers are a great way to target more than one area of the body. This exercise not only helps with muscle strengthening, but also helps strengthen your cardiovascular system. The targeted areas for this exercise are arms, core, and legs. This exercise will start in a push up position, making sure your hands are below your shoulders. Then, you will drive one knee to your chest and alternate legs quickly. As you are moving through this exercise, be sure to keep your hips down and flat.

St. Jude, Gigi’s Playhouse, and the Down Syndrome Association out to the barn. The barn resides on the Bryan’s private property in Franklin, but they have big plans to make it public. Adds Caroline, “We have property across the street. I want to keep it close. We have to have help. It’s a full time job.” Brett’s color is yellow and her symbol is the bumblebee. Ellen explains, “Before she was really sick, any time she had yellow on, she would just light up. She would glow. It became her signature color. That’s when we started saying ‘Be bright for Brett.’ My husband said he was going to tell Beyonce to move over because there’s a new queen bee in town, so then we started just calling her queen bee and it just evolved from there.” The mission of the Brett Boyer foundation is resolute. Ellen discloses, “We constantly say our mission is to support and celebrate. Support CHD and celebrate Down Syndrome because everything about it is good. I didn’t realize how much our lives were missing before Down Syndrome became a part of it. How grateful I am to be part of that community.” “I could think of about a thousand things that Ellen has said to me that have made me laugh and cry, but the best thing she ever said was when she said ‘I want to support and celebrate.’ It’s so simple but it’s so sincere and that’s exactly what we’re doing. Supporting families who are going through CHD and celebrating families who have children with Down Syndrome because they are the sweetest most wonderful children,” reveals Caroline. What’s been something great to come out of this for Ellen? “Seeing the change. When we first started, I thought maybe in 15-20 years we’ll see some change that some families get an option that we didn’t have. But it’s already happening. There are two projects at Boston Children’s that are already at FDA approval. And one of them is a valve that would have saved Brett’s life. For me, seeing change so quickly is wonderful.” She continues, “I feel so full of purpose. Every time I hear her name, I’m so incredibly proud.” For more information, visit BrettsBarn.com and TheBrettBoyerFoundation.org. 46

His vet comes to the house twice a year and the only maintenance he really needs, Jaime said, is to get his hooves trimmed. And since he’s a boy, his tusk also has to be tended to. Besides pig food, which she soaks in water to ensure he stays hydrated, he also gets healthy scraps. “My next-door neighbor is in love with Atticus, thank you Lord, because you always want your neighbors to love your pet, especially when it’s a pig. So she brings him her leftover watermelon and carrots. All the neighbors actually love Atticus.” If you’re thinking about adopting a pig, besides doing your research, Jaime recommends seeking out a reputable, local rescue organization and support the people who are out there every day rescuing animals. Also be sure to check your town’s ordinances and/or your homeowner’s association’s regulations, since some places may not allow pet pigs. 52

HAS
ALWAYS BEEN IN “OPENING A PIE SHOP.” After selling the Gigi’s Cupcake franchises three years ago and keeping the original location on Broadway until the end of 2019 when hot chicken giant Hattie B’s took over, Gigi was ready to open something that as she puts it was “mine.” At the top of the Coronavirus crisis and for Nashville, in conjunction with the devastating tornados, Gigi got to start her pie shop focusing on the real heart of her business; serving the community. Out of a commercial kitchen with no store front, just online ordering, she began taking orders and delivering real comfort food locally. To reach as many people as possible, she set up a central pickup location in Franklin near Whole Foods on McEwen. Beginning in August 2020, Pies by Gigi will be opening a store front in Williamson Country. Gigi wants it to be a destination location; a place to bring tourists from Nashville 60

into the Brentwood-based location in Brentwood Place off Franklin Rd. The dine-in location will focus on being lounge-y and comfortable; somewhere Gigi can “love on my customers”. A perfect meeting spot for bible study groups or a fantastic kid-friendly place where families can feel at home. The décor is French Farmhouse with lots of blush, pink and sage green; a welcoming soft antique feel. There will be a full tea bar along with local Just Love Coffee. There will be mini pies, quiches and muffins. Pies by Gigi will not only serve breakfast but also lunch and dinner in their Brentwood location. Along with the dine-in services there will be catering and delivery, to-go foods like pasta salads and take-and-bake casseroles and shipping all across the country. Sounds like gift giving for friends and family who have moved away from the South just got a whole lot easier! And not one to forget, Pies by Gigi will also have a mercantile located in the shop. One of her favorite items she will be featuring is Jams by Gigi. While Gigi’s focus is comfort food that doesn’t mean the dishes are unhealthy. A focus is to provide healthy and wholesome food along with vegan and gluten free options. She wants everyone who walks in to be “greeted with southern hospitality” and that means having a dish for everyone. Having moved to Tennessee to pursue her music career as a singer and songwriter she’s sang at Tootsie’s and cleaned toilets before becoming the baking business mogul we know today. She’s the first to tell you, “Hard work has always been the process of my life.” And thankfully, the residents of Williamson County are going to reap the fruits of that labor. Reflecting on her Gigi’s Cupcakes, Gigi will tell you she “didn’t really live in the moment.” She was too busy and things were moving too fast for her to take in what she had created. Pies by Gigi is the opportunity for her to reveal in one store. This time she wants to “look at all the beauty I built.” It is a place for those who come in to feel safe and loved located in a world where often, no one pays mind to how others are feeling. A little fun fact about Gigi, Gigi is a nickname, only people who know her really well call her by her real name, Gina. I have a feeling in just a short time, the number of customers who cross over from Gigi to Gina is high and I expect she would think that’s just wonderful. GigiButler.com 62

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)

3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
