Happy April, MY MOM USED TO SAY, “APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS.” Here in the south, our flowering trees and bulbs have already started to pop and spring is tugging us along into warmer weather. Mom was an optimist. Living in Michigan perhaps were it not for her sunny disposition, we would have all been miserable. Winter goes on and on there (though, not this year, as our globe struggles). My brother Tim was born in Detroit April 20 and more than once he celebrated a birthday with a toboggan party at the golf course. Now, he lives in Northern Michigan, above the 45th parallel and chops cords of wood each fall to fuel his wood-burning furnace all winter long. He was born to embrace winter, I guess. Happy Birthday, big brother!

I applaud his commitment to using renewable and natural resources (fallen wood from his property - helping keep the forest fire-free and healthy). Over its lifecycle, the biomass is a carbon-neutral fuel source. Cool! In my house, I can’t do anything quite as grandiose, but I recycle religiously, try to buy gently used stuff (garden tools, baby gear for the grandson, shelves for the garage, lawn furniture, even a sweet ski jacket) and add as little mass to the landfill as I can.

and the ones that she would like everyone to know about are the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, the Coral Restoration Project and the Shark Conservation Fund. It is key strategic partnerships such as these that make Georgia Aquarium a global leader in research and conservation. The South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds and Georgia Aquarium partnered to do the first-ever assessment of African Penguins. A fan favorite at Georgia Aquarium, African Penguins are considered to be an endangered species. This study and their ongoing work allows for a greater understanding of the health and environmental issues facing the penguin population and how best to prepare for their future. As our global assault on coral reefs continues, Georgia Aquarium and the Coral Restoration Fund are rising to meet the challenges of this crisis ensuring the future of these incredible ecosystems. This initiative is currently working to grow coral pieces in an underwater nursery in the Florida Keys. This project, among others at the aquarium, continues to rescue, grow, and transplant healthy and strong new coral where it is needed in hopes of giving our coral reefs a fighting chance of survival in their unique and dynamic ocean environment. The sharks are coming to Georgia Aquarium late this fall and with that more research and study into the least understood creatures of the oceans. The Shark Conservation Fund and Georgia Aquarium are working on the Global Shark Trends Program to reassess over 1250 species of rays and sharks that are known to live in our oceans. Every shark from the most common Spotted Blue Ray to the little-known Chimaera or Ghost Shark is being studied so that we can make the best decisions on conservation for the entire planet’s population. These are exciting global projects that are happening in our own back yard. Georgia Aquarium has many ways of supporting these efforts on a local level through engaging activities such as Science on Tap, a cocktail party with a science-themed lecture and, Aqua Vino, an incredible evening partnering delicious wines with local cuisine. Georgia Aquarium is leading the way globally and each of us can do our part to help by having some fun here at home and supporting their work globally. It seems that the oceans are really not that far away after all. 20

Pievangelism ALPHARETTA'S NEWEST CRAVING
AS THE SAYING GOES, WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS, MAKE LEMONADE. Or pie, if you’re Briana Carson. A self-proclaimed Pievangelist, Briana owns of one of Alpharetta City Center’s newest shops, Crave Pie Studio, a spot for handmade, seasonal savory and sweet pies. Briana’s signature all-butter crust is a hot commodity year ‘round and five signature flavors of mini and full-sized pies anchor her daily menu. Locally sourced ingredients coming include strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus and roasted spring vegetables handcrafted for one seasonal and one fruit pie special daily. Customers can see (and smell) the deliciousness unfold through huge picture windows opening to the kitchen at the new 1,100-square-foot shop in downtown Alpharetta. Sounds dreamy, but Briana’s journey to historic downtown took more than a few twists and turns. A 20-year veteran of corporate America, Briana is a lifelong lover of food and cooking…and was a huge fan of downtown Alpharetta, commuting through to her Windward Parkway office. Downsized in 2010 (twist number one), she was at a life crossroads and enrolled in cooking school. A savory girl through and through, she begrudgingly took the required Baking 101. Her final was making an apple pie from scratch and, as luck would have it, she immediately fell in love with pie baking. Twist number two. “After 10 plus years, I now firmly believe that homemade pie is your birthright,” Briana said. “Every American should be able to access pie right in their own community, that’s why I’m so committed to our historic downtowns like Alpharetta. Nothing creates community quite like food prepared with love so I’m making the world a better place by bringing people together. One pie at a time.” Early on, she sold pies at farmer’s markets and neighborhood festivals then in 2012, a retail spot opened in downtown Duluth. Like Alpharetta, that downtown was quaint, filled with other mom and pop storefronts and had a town square, ARTICLE BECKY PETERSON 26

community feel. After four years in Duluth, she planned a second shop in historic downtown Alpharetta, but a terrible auto accident derailed those plans. Another twist. Resurrecting those 2016 Alpharetta shop plans, Briana targeted fall 2019 to open in Alpharetta City Center. Just as the huge pie-making season began, an adjacent restaurant’s fire so severely damaged her flagship Duluth shop with smoke and water that she had to close in early October. During the high-demand Thanksgiving and Christmas season, she rented a commercial kitchen and kept employees busy fulfilling orders for corporate events, weddings and other events. The fire caused Briana to re-evaluate and become more intentional about mission and give back. Her team baked and delivered pies to the firefighters who saved their Duluth building. After lightning struck one Alpharetta employee’s house and it burned to the ground, Briana and her team delivered pies to the Johns Creek fire department who responded to that house fire. Briana formalized this “pie it forward” initiative and now asks social media followers to suggest non-profits to receive pies. Briana also employs women whom she affectionately refers to as the Mom Squad, women who are empty nesters and want to work part-time in a great shop, providing excellent customer service. Find and follow Crave Pie Studio on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and the old-fashioned way by phone at 678.485.7198 or visit 360 Commerce Street, Alpharetta. Find hours at CravePie.com

Programs like CRK’s floating classrooms have already demonstrated the profound impact that connecting children with water can have; this, along with the Water Warriors campaign, aims to connect children to the environment in a fun and exciting way as well as connect them with each other. Available to Water Warriors are quarterly events that celebrate the significance of young people and the environment. Part of this initiative will be the 2nd Annual All Girls Fly Fishing Workshop, a day on the river filled with fly fishing, educational lessons, and fun. Hosted by Unicoi Outfitters, the event will take place on Saturday, April 11 in Helen, Ga. Participants will experience an entomology lesson and learn about conservation, casting lessons, the anatomy of a fly rod, and various knots needed in fly fishing. Lunch is also included. Sponsors of the AllGirls Fish include The Orvis Company, DUN Magazine and Georgia Women Fly Fishers. The All-Girls Fish is open to young girls, ages 5-18. The Orvis Company has generously donated fly rods for use by participants, but waders are not included. To register your young aspiring fly angler, text 5050ONTHEWATER to 41444. 30

CULINARY CREATIONS
Kabob Koobideh with Beyond Meat
ARTICLE CHEF PEYMAN ROSTAMI
PERSIAN BASKET MARKET - KITCHEN & BAR
INGREDIENTS + 1 ½ pound Beyond Meat + 1 medium yellow onions + 1 garlic cloves, peeled and minced + 1 tsp sumac (sold at the Middle Eastern markets) + Ground Black Pepper, Salt, Turmeric, Powdered Saffron + Olive oil to brush the kabob before grilling – optional INSTRUCTIONS 1. For best results Beyond Meat should be room temperature. 2. Finely chop the onion pieces in a food processor until very juicy. Place a fine metal mesh over a bowl and strain the processed onion by pressing it with a spatula. Discard the juice. 3. Add the remaining onion pulp to a medium bowl. 4. Add Beyond Meat, minced garlic, salt, Turmeric & a small dash of Saffron to the bowl. Knead until mixture is paste-like. 5. Divide the paste into two equal balls. 6. Get one of the balls of paste in the palm of your hand, place the skewer on top of it and squeeze the paste around the skewer. Once you make sure that paste is not going to fall off, start squeezing it from top to bottom and cover the middle section of the skewer. Leave the top and bottom of the skewer clear. Wet your fingers with the tap water and keep squeezing and spreading the paste evenly around the skewer. The paste should be about ½ inch thick all around the skewer. 7. Set the skewer gently on a shallow baking sheet with sides, so the paste does not touch the bottom. To grill the Koobideh use two square metal pipes to form a rack for skewers. Turn skewers often and be careful not to overcook or touch grate. Serve on a piece of flatbread. Slide kebab off the skewer onto the serving platter. The flavorful kabob juices make the bread delicious. Serve with Persian Rice or grilled vegetables and a sprinkle of sumac PersianBasketATL.com 38
