As we embark on this new season, I can’t help but feel reminiscent of October's past. Two years ago, our son wed on a fabulous fall day. And just last year, our daughter had a classic South Carolina wedding. You may remember those rainy snapshots from last year’s February issue and the beautiful bride she was on our cover ! What can you do to make this fall a memorable time for your family and friends? Consider supporting a local business and our featured ‘Taste of the Lake’ restaurants, next time you grab a bite to eat. Plan a weekend getaway to Primland- You’ll find on page 26 that this resort will transcend you to another world! Or even brighten your day by attending a colorful balloon festival, featured on page 20. Happy Fall, Y’all!

Strategic Snacking

MAKE IT COUNT. Focus on including whole foods and limiting processed foods as often as possible.Whole foods not only contain Vitamins and Minerals, but also important antioxidants and phytochemicals that help boost your immune system. You’ll avoid spending your snack calories on “empty” foods and will make every bite count. Be strategic and use minimally processed whole grains, vegetables, fruit, and nonfat milk products. An added advantage, nutrient dense whole foods are less costly than most processed foods. MEASURE IT. Portion control is a must to limit calories and keep snacking sensible. Measure it, weigh it, count it out; then store it in small containers or snack bags for right-sized portions. Spend a little time daily or weekly pre-portioning your snacks and you’ll not only save time, but you’ll slash calories as well! BRING IT. Always bring food with you. Pack apples, bananas, baby carrots, whole grain crackers in your purse, backpack, briefcase, or gym bag. Keep a snack-size bag of almonds, a box of raisins, or an energy bar in your desk at work. Having these healthier options on hand prevents you from getting caught reaching for that candy bar or doughnut in the breakroom. DRINK UP. Are you really having a snack attack? Or are you thirsty? We often confuse the sense of thirst with feeling hungry. Drinking water or any calorie-free beverage before a meal or snack can curb your appetite, and you can dramatically reduce your caloric intake just by drinking more water vs. sweet tea or sodas.Since we all need at least six to eight glasses of water daily, start your snack break with a glass of water. Wait a couple of minutes before eating; you may be surprised when those hunger pangs subside. GO LEAN. Lean protein can keep you feeling fuller longer. Snack on a combo of fiber-rich carbohydrates and protein for a satisfying snack. Pair veggies with hummus, or try protein-rich Greek yogurt with fresh fruit. If you need an energy boost to get you through the afternoon, go lean with a higher protein snack.

WE RISE SO OTHERS SOAR

FORTY SEVEN YEARS AGO, A SMALL GROUP OF TENACIOUS INDIVIDUALS GATHERED IN A RURAL FIELD TO HOST THE NATIONAL BALLOON RALLY – AN ANNUAL EVENT THAT HOSTS PILOTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY (AND WORLD). Since its creation, this event has captivated the hears and minds of both local and visiting onlookers, who take in the sights and sounds of the balloons that navigate the Iredell County skies. Resolved with a perseverance to spread their knowledge and love for the sport of hot air ballooning, in addition to supporting their community, the National Balloon Rally became an incorporated 501(c) (3) nonprofit in 1988. It’s mission resolves “to continue the heritage of hot air ballooning in Iredell County, spotlight the community of Iredell County, and donate a percentage of Carolina BalloonFest proceeds to local nonprofit organizations.” National Balloon Rally Charities, Inc. DBA Carolina BalloonFest has faced many challenges, trials and tribulations over the years, but the nonprofit has thrived in promoting hot air ballooning, and in providing annual donations to supports its community. This is all possible because of the grit and determination of dedicated individuals who have volunteered their time to NBRC, Inc.’s cause and mission. With the festivals origins in mind, and a hopeful future ahead, it is with heavy hearts that the Board of Directors for NBRC, Inc. makes its decision to alter this year’s Carolina BalloonFest – eliminating public attendance from the annual event for the year 2020.

It has so much to offer. Another unique offering at Primland is “forest bathing.” This is a type of therapy designed to help improve your mental and physical health using nature. At Primland, you can request a meditative walk through nature that puts you in touch with the flora and fauna of the region. This is designed to be rejuvenating and restorative. The experience concludes with a special ceremony at the Medicine Wheel . This is an outdoor circular garden that as the seasons turn it directs you to the most appropriate flowers and herbs to use for your needs of the season. The spa utilizes these natural remedies in some of their seasonal spa treatments. There are so many activities at Primland that you could never do them all. I see that as a great reason to return. In fact, about 90 percent of the people I met at the resort were on a return visit. Primland is so special that once you’ve got a taste, you just have to go back.

A TRUE ESCAPE Primland is a true escape where you can connect with yourself and the earth. I found myself doing things that I wanted to do and enjoying them without feeling I was doing it for the “gram” or just doing something just to share it. I went on a three-mile hike. I spent time looking at the night sky. I did these things for myself. Not for others. Not to get “likes.” Because it was what I needed and craved. The only thing not perfect about Primland was I did not have my dogs with me. However, I learned the resort’s cottages are dog-friendly. Like most people who visit Primland, I’m already planning my return visit. This time, with my furry friends. TREND SETTER ARTICLE JULIE BROWN-PATTON

Angelle LaBorde

Lexington Chamber's New Leader SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

ANGELLE LABORDE, CCE, BECAME THE NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE LEXINGTON CHAMBER AND VISITORS CENTER. She succeeds Otis Rawl, who retired after more than four years as chamber president and CEO. Chris Petty, chamber board chairman, says Angelle has an established track record of stimulating gains in revenues, promoting and advocating for public policy initiatives and extensive community engagement. She's provided more than a decade of service and leadership to the Greenwood, S.C. business community, and has a quarter century of experience in the chamber of commerce industry and nonprofit sector. According to Otis, only 4 percent of executives in the nation possess the CCE designation. “There is a lot of momentum in Lexington right now and I’m humbled to serve the organization and be a part of its continued growth and prosperity,” she says. Under her leadership, the South Carolina chamber led a successful community-wide marketing campaign for the passage of Greenwood County’s penny capital projects referendum. Voters approved the measure with 65 percent supporting the referendum. In recent years, the South Carolina Festival of Flowers yielded more than $4 million in economic impact for the Greenwood community, and received numerous awards from state, regional and international festival and event associations. Angelle is a graduate of Louisiana State University, and received her master’s degree in human resource management from the Florida Institute of Technology. In 1995, she began her career at The Chamber/New Orleans & The River Region as an area council manager and was later promoted to membership director. She has a certificate in nonprofit management from Winthrop University with prior career experience at the United Way for the Greater New Orleans area and the American Diabetes Association. 36
