All things seem possible in May THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATE WOMEN AND I AM VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD A NUMBER OF WONDERFUL WOMEN LEAVE THEIR MARK ON ME. Sometimes, people come into our lives and change the very core of who we are, and for me that includes my mother, grandmother and high school journalism teacher. My mother Nan, a concert violinist and founder of the very successful OK Mozart

Festival, taught me grit, endurance and strategy. My grandmother Dorothy, a journalist, columnist and newspaper editor taught me that being soft in work can sometimes be a strength and that happiness can be found in small things. And, Mrs. Hicks taught me in high school that I was actually good at something academic and motivated me to be a journalist. Hallelujah! In May, we celebrate Mothers Day and honor all of the women who have paved the way for us. In this very special issue, we feature four women who are leading Tulsa to greatness. They are our 2020 Female Movers & Shakers - spectacular women who are shaping the future of the city. We also profile a young female entrepreneur who owns a roofing company, and share with you a number of networking and member-

HOW THIS GUTSY MILLENNIAL IS TAKING THE ROOFING BUSINESS BY STORM
ARTICLE LYNNE BURKE
GIRL POWER!

Tulsa Lifestyle | May 2020
BROOKE LAIZURE’S ENTRANCE INTO THE ROOFING WORLD WAS UNPLANNED. During a summer break from college, she decided to tag along with her dad, a sales manager for a general contractor, to make some extra money. Little did she know that temporary girl Friday job would change the trajectory of her life.
A natural fit Like so many people her age, Laizure loves to travel and hates being corralled in an office. And,
riding around with her dad to jobsites that summer was more fun than work. She never considered the construction industry as a career but found it interesting and exciting—and
strangely easy. She realized she had a natural gift for the way things are built and soaked up a wealth of product knowledge. She opened Whirlwind Roofing and Construction with her dad six months later.
Whirlwind of expertise Laizure is passionate about education and has gleaned a long list of impressive accreditations. For instance, her company is a Fortified-Wise designated roofing company, has preferred contractor certifications through several shingle manufacturers, and is a Native American owned and Women-owned business. Most impressive is her Xactimate Level 3 certification - the complicated software insurance companies use to settle storm damage claims. She is only one of two roofing contractors in the State of Oklahoma with this elite status allowing her to use industry knowledge and the insurance company’s own tools to make sure her customers are getting everything they deserve to replace or repair their property.
Lady boss In the beginning, everyone she met naturally assumed that the men in her company were the decision makers. She used to take it personally but now takes it in stride. She says, “Eventually the truth of who owns the company comes out and the reactions are priceless. A quick conversation with me after the shock wears off solidifies my industry knowledge and experience. Honestly, it’s a great ice breaker.”
Millennial mindset Laizure says being a 30-year old in the roofing industry has also been a challenge. She says, “The industry is filled with contractors that have been in the business 20, 30 or more years. They have the benefit of years of experience and all the advantages that comes with it. These things take time and millennials like me can be impatient.” On the flip side, millennials embrace technology. Instead of falling back on the traditional approach of ‘that’s the way we have always done it,’ she says millennials are challenged by finding a better, more efficient way of doing things. Using technology such as aerial measurement software, drones and virtual meetings allows her to work smarter and not harder.

A softer touch “I love helping our customers, especially women and elderly homeowners. Women trust other women and are less threatening in a sales situation. Plus, I’ve found that being a family-owned company appeals to our customers,” she says. Laizure’s dad and business partner, Dave Laizure, is her biggest supporter. He says, “I am so proud of Brooke. She cares so much about our customers. She shows up at dawn and watches to make sure every shingle is being installed correctly. She grabs lunch for the crew, takes documentation photos all day, and is the last one to leave at night after making sure every piece of trash is picked up. What other roofing contractor does that?”
A man’s world (for now) Women comprise 50 percent of the population but

are only 3.9 percent of the construction workforce. Laizure says her industry needs to do a better job of promoting construction as a career option for women. There is a misconception that you must climb on a roof

“I love watching kids that have never held a hammer learn how to shingle a roof. But I really enjoy talking to them about all the amazing career opportunities open to them, including being an entrepreneur,” she says. For her, Laizure is excited about the future of Whirlwind Roofing and Construction. She just celebrated her fourth year in business and is working on (of course) more certifications to better serve her customers. She says, “As a woman in the roofing industry, I know I must be better and know more than my male counterparts to prove myself as an expert. This can either push you forward or push you out of the industry. For me, it’s a good push.”
Laizure participates in Build My Future, a program designed to encourage high school seniors to join the skilled trades.

Here to Help You Rebuild Your LifeÂŽ New Encrypted Applications Gaining Prevelance
In divorce and family law litigation, text, email and cell phone records are often important. In many cases, parties seek this evidence in discovery when it bears on relevant issues. Text, email and cell phone records can sometimes be relevant as to child custody. For example, it might relate to inappropriate behavior and conduct that could bear on the fitness of a parent. The possibilities can be infinite, but it can show drug and alcohol abuse, inappropriate behavior and activities or time away from the family and children. In states where marital misconduct is a factor, it can also be relevant. In other words, it could provide evidence of affairs. It could also provide evidence of gambling, illicit behavior or even physical or mental abuse. Electronic evidence may also be important as to income and hidden assets. Some parties might, as an example, get their paycheck stubs emailed to them. They also might have receipts and statements emailed to them relative to unknown marital assets or bank or credit card accounts. To get this information, lawyers oftentimes issue requests for production. In other cases, lawyers may issue subpoenas for this information to the other party or third party carriers. A lawyer may also take a deposition or hire a private investigator. An increasing trend now is for parties to use encrypted applications to conceal communications that they do not want others to see. Three common applications are
Wickr, Vaporstream and Confide. These applications boast military-grade technology where they assert that the communication is protected. The features vary by application, but the messages often self-destruct after being read and do not have the name of the sender or receiver of a message on the same page. For lawyers, they have to be cognizant that individuals going through divorce or family law matters may be using these applications. For parties going through a divorce or family law matter, or where they reasonably anticipate litigation, an important question is whether they should use these applications. Ultimately, the big risk is that a court might conclude that a party is spoliating relevant evidence by using these applications. If the court concludes that a party is spoliating evidence, that party could be subject to sanctions in the family court. A family court judge might also conclude that a party using these applications has something to hide. Otherwise, why use applications like this? This may mean that the party ends up getting an adverse result as it relates to important components of a divorce or family law matter. Ultimately, anybody going through a divorce or family law matter should speak to a lawyer about their specific situation. However, parties should also probably steer clear from these encrypted applications. While the privacy components may be appealing, and may conceal the
LET US ENTERTAIN YOU
exact nature of the communications, the appearance of having something to hide is likely not worth the risk. Nonetheless, encrypted applications are likely to become an increasing trend in divorce and family law litigation. The popularity, and ease of downloading these applications, is likely to make it an increasing trend. AMY BROWN DEPUTY MAYOR OF TULSA
Amy Brown is the deputy mayor for the City of Tulsa and manages the administrative and public safety support divisions. She also leads the Physical Investigation Committee for the City of Tulsa’s 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre graves investigation. Prior to her current role, Brown served as Mayor Bynum’s deputy chief of staff. She also worked for Mayor Kathy Taylor and the Tulsa City Council before obtaining her law degree from The University of Tulsa. Today, Brown is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association and serves on the board of directors for the Community Service Council and the TYPROS Foundation. “I love that Tulsa has big city offerings with low barriers to opportunity,” said Brown. “I am most proud of the times when our team at the city has come together to protect our community in times of emergency. We did it during the 2019 flood, and we’re doing it today in response to COVID-19.” Brown’s highest priority is to find the remains from the 1921 Race Massacre. She said, “We have a responsibility to investigate, share the truth about what happened, and reintern those who lost their lives with respect.” She also hopes to continue the use of data and innovation to improve the services we deliver to Tulsans. When asked about working at the city, she said, “Working alongside Mayor G.T. Bynum is a master class in leadership. He does the right thing even when it isn’t popular, and he’s willing to stand up for and explain his decisions.

BECK Y FIELDS BANKER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COACH
Becky Fields is the vice president of private banking at Mabrey Bank, founder of Positive on Purpose - a professional and personal development company, and president of the Rotary Club of Tulsa - the local chapter of an international service organization. She has served on the boards for Picture in Scripture Ministries, Child Abuse Network, Integris Hospital Foundation and the Grove Education Foundation for Excellence. Fields’ career in banking has spanned two decades with roles including commercial lending, private banking, chief lending officer and president. Fields moved to Tulsa six years ago from Grand Lake. She earned her finance degree from OU and attended the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado. Her passion is to lead, coach, and help high performing women in business create powerful strategies and systems so they can up-level their career, income and life. “Six years ago, I founded a professional and personal development company for women in business. We started with six executive women who came together to share goals, perspectives, obstacles and opportunities. Since then, hundreds of women have gone through my mastermind groups, workshops and seminars,” Fields said. As president of the Rotary Club of Tulsa, Fields’ goal is to inspire Rotarians of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities to engage in the community. “I believe we are agents of change that others can look to in times of need. Rotarians have a long history of being on the front lines volunteering money and time where needed most. My goal is to let more people know that so they can join alongside in what we’re already doing in our community and around the world.”

Murphy is the patrol supervisor for the Gilcrease Division and has been instrument in creating reading programs for youth at-risk across the city over the past five years. In 2016, Murphy first established a summer reading program for children residing in high crime neighborhoods. In 2017, she partnered with the Tulsa Housing Authority to establish a youth mentorship program, the Tulsa Police Activity League, to improve the relationship between police and children residing in government housing. In the past few years, she became the TPD liaison for the Joy in the Cause backpack program. “The backpacks contain comforting gifts and they serve as a valuable resource for officer when they encounter children in crisis situations,” Murphy said. Recently, Murphy co-founded the citywide TPD Reading Patrol and Crime Stoppers Book Nooks to promote literacy and build relationships between the police and children residing in low income and high crime apartment complexes across the city. “It only takes one person to cross the path of another to change their entire course in life. As I child growing up in a chaotic home environment, I often felt that I would not be able to overcome the barriers that I had faced in life.” After receiving words of encouragement from an inspiring teacher, I set out on a journey to change my course in life,” said Murphy who earned a psychology degree and a Certificate in Legal Studies from The University of Tulsa. “Over the past few years, I have been sharing more of my story in hopes of encouraging others to walk an unfamiliar path as it can lead to great things.”

DIY
PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN
IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY WANT SOME GREENERY TO ADD A LITTLE BIT OF COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space.
+
Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

Called to Action Turning Wine Into Sanitizer
When Covid-19 started making it’s way into Oklahoma, when things really got real, we at Oklahoma Distilling Company paused and took stock of our company, our journey, our existence within the community, and what kind of company we want to be during this crisis. In midMarch we started making Sanitizer for Service Workers, selling some and giving away some with proceeds going directly to out-of-work hospitality workers. Without the critical support of Oklahoma bartenders, bar managers, and hospitality staff throughout our journey as a fairly new business, we wouldn’t still have a business. We’re lucky to be in a position right now where we can truly give back, and thanks to our local partner Downward Dog Wine, which donated a near endless (for us) supply of wine to distill into sanitizer, we have been able to make a real impact! It’s April 9th now and we’ve already raised over $20,000 for hospitality workers. We have been able to create jobs as well, and we’ve just begun. #TulsaStrong -Oklahoma Distilling Co.
Oklahoma Distilling Company is a Tulsa-based distillery that started in 2017. They are the makers of craft spirits such as Indian Grass Vodka, 1907 Whiskey, Stiff Shot Coffee Liqueur, Oklahoma Rose Botanical Gin, and Rose Rock Rum. They are also the founders of Local Cider and Angry Bear Mead. For more info on Oklahoma Distilling Company visit www.okdistilling.com & follow: @okdistilling
