GIVING BACK (CONTINUED) If possible, Anna's medical approach is even more inviting than the building she works in. She brings warmth, understanding and years of expertise to each and every family. Those qualities, along with her reputation for taking her time during each visit, earned her a Five Star of Excellence Award, scoring her in the top 10% nationally for patient satisfaction. “In pediatrics, you get to watch and be a part of the blossoming of an individual. You get to be an honorary member of the family,” she says. This pediatrician says she loves seeing her college-age patients return and hearing about all of the amazing things they're doing as they explore their dreams. And many of her grown-up former patients now bring in their own children to see her. She calls them her grand-patients. “I'm so amazed every time I look at them. They’re coming back with their own children, and they are marvelous parents. It's just one of the best parts of what I do,” says Anna. It also helps that this doctor is a mother of twins herself, giving her a deep understanding of the demands of raising twins. “Those tears of a new mother when feedings are difficult, or the passing of each bittersweet milestone as we watch our sweet lambs grow up, I know these feelings well,” she confides. Anna currently resides in Webster Groves with her husband, Paul, and their twin boys, Edward and George. When not working, she says she loves spending time with her family and two puppies. They also spend weekends at the family farm in St. Albans, Missouri, whenever they can. But during the week, Dr. Anna can be found doing the work she loves. “I try to run this as an old-fashioned office. If you need to see me, I will always find a space for you. I encourage my patients to call me between visits should any questions arise. My entire purpose is to take the purest, most thoughtful approach to taking care of our most precious people,” says this thoughtful pediatrician.

Children are not the only ones who discover the joy of making music. Lacefield gives lessons for anyone who is 3 to 93 years old. “We believe anyone, regardless of age, can play the piano with the right lesson program,” she says. Lacefield uses the program from the Yamaha Music School program that's innovative and enables students to learn at a fast pace. “For older students, it keeps your mind sharper and it’s great for hand/eye coordination,” Cathy says. “It’s said that you should find a hobby that you can do, and this is an all-weather hobby. No matter what the weather, you can play the piano," she suggests. Learning the art of piano playing is more enjoyable if the piano is fun to play. Enter the digital piano, the Yamaha Clavinova, in particular. Yamaha introduced this piano in 1983, and it opened up a new world of playing. The Clavinova can be connected to a computer and with the touch of a button, students can make a variety of music variations from harpsichords to pipe organs, classical to contemporary. Lacefield instructor Heather Worthington says Yamaha recorded 180,000 notes made by an acoustic concert grand piano, and put them on the Clavinova. “The technology is built in and can run off an iPad or Kindle. The student can make many different sounds and rhythms," she says. “It never needs tuning, and you can attach headphones so you could play without disturbing Dad while he watches baseball,” she adds. 314.845.3760 Cathy@lacefieldmusic.com LacefieldMusic.com

In The Arms Of (Human) Angels NONPROFIT PROVIDES FOSTER CHILDREN WITH SAFETY NETS

ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON 30

Chesterfield Lifestyle | August 2020

FOSTER CHILDREN DESERVE THE CHANCE TO BE CHILDREN, TO BE PART OF A FAMILY, AND TO LIVE UP TO THEIR POTENTIAL. That's the whole mission of a South St. Louis County-based nonprofit launched 20 years ago -- and they've been sensationally successful, with the help of community volunteers. Angels’ Arms so far has improved the lives of 600plus children, including more than 140 sibling groups, by providing them with loving homes and allowing them to thrive in happy, functional family settings. After serving as a foster parent herself for several years and frequently receiving calls to care for sibling groups, Angels' Arms Founder and Executive Director Bess Wilfong knew firsthand that fostering is an extremely difficult calling. However, with true dedication to keeping brothers and sisters together within a nurturing family until a forever home is found, all things are possible with community support. Angels’ Arms teams provide homes, resources and emotional support to experienced foster parents so they can raise the standard of care for foster children.

SINCE 1987. During 2019-2020 alone, the nonprofit's 471 volunteers already helped 34,100-plus St. Louis children and adults. "This year's pandemic stretched our creativity, but we're very proud to have determined how to safely continue to help others," says Assistance League President Dawn Thomas. For example, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Dawn says they distributed hygiene kits, delivered books to restless children, and emptied their stockpile of clothing, shoes and plush toy bears.

FUN PAPER CRAFT PROJECTS FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)

PIÑLLAMA

3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

DIRECTIONS 1. Using a stencil, cut out the pieces you’ll need for your flamingo from construction paper: Pink: 4-6 circles for the body (depending on how “fluffy” you want it), neck and legs White: Outline of the beak Black: Beak 2. Fold the circles in half and glue them all together back-to-back to create a sphere that looks like an accordion. 3. Glue the beak and white stripe to the neck, then glue the neck to a flat side of your inner-most circle. 4. Add the legs, a black dot for an eye and pink feathers for the ultimate flamin-goal.
