The Green Corridor ARTICLE DAVID BRANT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ASPETUCK
Saving the Planet One Backyard at a Time
WHEN THE ASPETUCK LAND TRUST WAS FOUNDED IN 1966, CLIMATE CHANGE WASN’T EVEN PART OF OUR LEXICON. And we certainly couldn’t imagine the Earth plummeting into climate crisis in our lifetimes. Turns out our conserving 150 properties of open space on more than 1,900 acres of land was just the right thing to do in the face of a changing climate. We’ve now extended our mission to save more land by involving private homeowners in Westport, Weston, Fairfield and Easton. The initiative is all tied to fighting the climate crisis. It’s called the Green Corridor. The Green Corridor emerged out of Aspetuck Land Trust’s involvement in a regional conservation partnership, “The Hudson to Housatonic Initiative,” organized by Highstead in Redding, a local non-profit conservation group. Our Board of Directors took this larger regional perspective and applied it locally to the four towns we serve. Maintaining the natural biodiversity of open land is now recognized as key to mitigating some of the worst effects of climate change: the wholesale death of pollinators that keep our food growing and our bird populations stable. Have you noticed fewer insects splattered on your car windshield at night? Do you hear as many bird songs as you once did? What has happened to all the fireflies?

HOW TO COMPOST AT HOME
ARTICLE ROBIN MOYER CHUNG
Planting flowers.
MY DAUGHTER WAS 18 MONTHS OLD AND ALLOWED ME TO OUTFIT HER IN A PINK SUNDRESS BECAUSE SHE WAS NOT YET AWARE OF SWEATPANTS AND HOODIES. I noted the beautiful day as she tore through the house and threw herself outside. Minutes later she returned, eyes shining with wonderment. Breathlessly she uttered, “Wums!” In her tiny pink hands she cradled a gag-inducing earthworm about seven inches long. Her father had pulled the startled worm from our compost. Me, I’m not a fan of our slithery friends but recognize their value in home composting: by eating the contents of the compost bin they aerate the compost and add nutrients from their digestive tracts. Which brings me to my point: how to compost. You’ll need a compost bin in your yard, preferably one without a bottom so worms can easily find and access your rot. To the bin, add roughly half “green/nitrogen-rich” and half “brown/carbon-rich” material. Green includes: vegetable scraps from meals, grass clippings, leaves, spent plants, seaweed. Brown includes: shredded newspaper, dried leaves, small sticks. CONTINUED >

Animal leftovers and manure or your yard will smell like death. Weeds. Large compacted items like piles of wet paper or whole cabbages that’ll take forever to break down.
Whether or not you can include peels (banana, orange, etc.) is a dicey topic among composters. I’ll avoid it so as not to get caught in the cross-fire. Grab a pitchfork and aerate the mess once a week. The green items should provide enough moisture but if gets too dry then add a bit of water. Make sure to cover it - compost is a lovely snack for bugs and birds. If

WATER & WOODS JAMES PHILBIN OF J.P. PHILBIN’S LANDSCAPES AND NURSERY DISCUSSES TRENDS IN LANDSCAPING
ARTICLE ROBIN MOYER CHUNG
SPRUCE UP YOUR TURF
34
Westport Lifestyle | April 2020
HEY EVERYONE, WHIRLPOOLS ARE BACK! Squeeze yourself into a speedo and rock your savage tan! Or not. Though my imagination ran amok (Gold chains! Scented oils!) James Philbin quickly pointed out that these whirlpools aren’t the groovy plastic pits of the 70’s. They’re spas, often designed to match your patio, which is located near the lovely pergola and outdoor kitchen with sink, grilling station, fridge, bar area and kegerator. You can also throw in a fire pit to warm your tootsies after a bracing evening splash-fest. James Philbin of J.P. Philbin’s Landscapes and Nursery is listing off the latest in lawntrends. Spoiler alert: lawn ornaments are not among them. So put back the blank-eyed cupid statue that will one day terrify a child and focus on - you guessed it - the environment. According to James, the biggest trend is… living inside outside. Outdoor kitchens and living spaces. Creating gathering spaces for the family atop custom stone patios with cushioned furniture and easy access to snacks. Bonus: these spaces are impossible for deer and other wildlife to eat. Seriously. 90% of the effort in designing a beautiful landscape is taking care to avoid it becoming nourishing meals for unwanted vermin. Also, it needs to be low-maintenance because who has the time to fuss over a lawn given every other little thing in one’s life? With that, and with the understanding that no human can safeguard nature against its own, here are some other trends: Blue hydrangea. CONTINUED >

WATER & WOODS

Eye-catching Japanese Stewart.
FLOWERS: Flowers are key, though your average neighbor isn’t going crazy with the hues. Yet. Whites and blues are popular, and pinks, reds, and yellowish are attracting a fan base. Ultimately, however, it’s all about the customer’s preferred palette. Hydrangeas and Knock-Out Roses are loved for their enduring blooms and ease in maintaining. Further, the large and plentiful hydrangea blossoms are terrific for cutting and vasing for indoor decor. Peonies, my favorite, “have taken a back seat because the bloom time is so short.” Which is true. Still, the leaves look nice for a couple of months after the blossom is shot. Dahlias, my second favorite behind parrot tulips (in case you’re buying me flowers) are a seasonal favorite for their long bloom time and gorgeous flower. Just remember to stake those leggy bad boys or they’ll list and droop like grandpa at a tequila tasting. A new azalea, Bloomathon, also shows staying power for the very reason its name suggests. Pink dahlias.
SCREEN: Seeing as though you’ve planted such lovely flora you’re bound to have peepers. To screen out prying eyes a “fence” surrounding your property of Green Giant Arborvitae proves durable, deer-resistant and visually rewarding. TREES: James explains that “Trees are a statement piece, they catch your eye first” and recommends investing in a few stand-out trunks. Paperbark Maples have a beautiful, peeling bronze bark which offers “winter interest” once the leaves have ditched their branches. James’s personal favorite is the Japanese Stewartia. It blooms a beautiful yellow and white during June and its camouflage bark is a unique and lovely stand-out. Living inside outside with Philbin masonry.
PORCHES: Bluestone remains a staple for pavement and patios, although granite is a great alternative. For a sleek, modern look, consider Veneer stone in square and rectangular cuts. After you’ve created your porches and patios, planted peonies and paperbarks, consider creating a pollinator strip to attract much-needed birds, bees, and butterflies. To learn more about how we can use our yards to battle climate change, read The Green Corridor in this magazine.

SHOP TOMORROWS TACKLES THE USED CLOTHING MARKET
I’M NOT A PACKRAT AND I’M ONLY AS SENTIMENTAL AS THE NEXT MOM. I mean, I saved a few crates of my kids’ baby clothes. Normal, right? My grandkids will look adorable in my kids’ old clothing. Now, ten years later, I look at these bins and imagine my kids’ spouses saying, “Your mom is crazy.” At this point, only part of the reason I keep them is sentimental. The other larger part is that unloading them would be a total pain. Listing the hoard on eBay would take the greater part of a month and rack up, say, $35.65 if I’m lucky. Goodwill is out because it’s too impersonal. I can’t give them away because I don’t know anyone with babies any more. Which bites, because while I’m busy dismissing options for these togs, the fashion industry continues to pump out damaging dyes and chemicals to keep up with the demand for kids’ clothing.

Shop Tomorrow's used children's clothing.
It’s this conundrum that stylist, costume-designer, and mother of two-year old twins Haley Lieberman is tackling with Shop Tomorrows (which she refers to as “Tomorrows”). With Tomorrows, Haley envisions an “online hand-me-down network for parents to give and get kids’ stuff without ever exchanging cash. Like Instagram meets Ebay, members shop from their friends, neighborhoods, and beyond, keeping kids’ stuff in our families and out of landfills.” Plus, you know the tulip-print dress your daughter wore for her first birthday is going to someone who loves it and may even live near you so you can, like, visit it once in a while but not in a creepy way. Shop Tomorrow's used children's clothing.
Users transact in points, effectively creating a barter exchange. The site will include recommended point “prices” based on item, brand, and condition. When you

sell an item, you collect points which you can use to acquire other items. Further, Haley says, “We are building a giant community so that you can connect to thousands of parents with clothes in the right size, season and style.” And if you know someone on the site with great taste you can click on their offerings and sift through all the cool stuff their kids wore. As Tomorrows grows, Haley hopes to add adult clothing and household items to the network. She adds, “As we scale, we aim to offer the user the ability to trade their points for goods and services from our partner affiliates, or the points can be donated to a family in need through one of our partner organizations.” CONTINUED >

Buyer pays a low transaction fee for the entire purchase, regardless of how many items are included. You may mail your item(s) to the buyer or drop them off at a convenient Tomorrows-designated pick-up point, “like local boutiques and gyms,” to avoid packaging and travel pollutants. WHAT WE OFFER
A CUP OF COFFEE AND A SECOND OPINION The markets can seem volatile and confusing and even the most patient investors may question the wisdom of their plan. At Gold Family Wealth, we have seen a lot of markets come and go. And we can certainly empathize with people who find the current environment troublesome and disturbing. We’d like to help, if we can, and to that end, here is what we offer: A cup of coffee, and a second opinion By appointment we will visit with you, we will ask you to outline your financial goals and what your plan is intended to do for you. Then we will review your financial plan and portfolio strategy for you. If we think your overall plan and investment strategy continue to be well-suited to your long-term goals - despite the current market and political/geopolitical uncertainty- we will gladly tell you so and send you on your way. If, on the other hand, we think some of your planning no longer fits with your goal(s), we will explain why, in plain English, And, if you like, we will recommend some alternatives. nutrition MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.
PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.
C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.
F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil.

SMART, SIMPLE WAYS YOU CAN HELP AVOID WASTE

Only 9% of plastic is recycled. The other 91% of plastic waste pollutes the soil and water or is burned with the rest of our garbage which pollutes our environment, neg-
atively impacts public health and contributes to the climate crisis. Plastic is made from petroleum plus additives for a specific product or packaging use and it is on track to become the #1 end use of fossil fuels. Petroleum is refined and processed at petrochemical plants that pollute our world and create environmental justice communities (a community disproportionately exposed to environmental hazards) whose residents are sickened by the toxic fumes. Plastic is often a convenience, especially single-use items that can be easily replaced with something reusable and durable.

His call to “Reduce, Reuse, Refuse” reinforces the central role consumers play in moving the waste needle quickly downward. ZERO SINGLE USE PLASTIC CHECK LIST Here’s a handy check list to guide your zero plastic waste efforts at home, at work, at school, at play and on the road. The goal is to replace all single-use plastic with reusable or compostable items. Paper is better than plastic, reusables are even better. + Stop buying or accepting plastic bottled water. Plastic does not biodegrade the way food and paper do: it breaks down into micro- and nano-plastics that persist in the environment and release toxic chemicals. Fish, turtles, seals, whales and birds think it’s food and eating it causes digestive system blockage and eventual death. Refuse bottled water and bring metal water thermos everywhere you go. Be a super zero waste hero by carrying your own coffee thermos too. + Don’t accept plastic bags, even produce and dry cleaning bags.
