There are also some heartwarming tales about local businesses devoted to pets. Take a look at the feature highlighting a promising, new way to counter aging skin -- one that doesn't require surgery. Dr. Fred Himmelstein is happy to address questions about how to prepare for Ultherapy anti-aging treatments at his medical spa. Please join us in taking this month to spoil our little ones, whether they walk on two legs or four, as summer comes to a close and we watch them all get a little bit bigger and a little bit smarter. It's a pleasure to introduce you to my own four-legged companion, Toki, who's on the cover of this month's West Chester Lifestyle. He's my pride and joy. You can learn about his ancient breed, Vizsla, on page 32.

scheduled for Aug. 27-29. Organizers held out hope the festival could occur, but eventually realized health concerns will not allow it. "Our festivals are not social-distancing-oriented events," Alan Jacoby, executive producer of Impact Entertainment, stated. "They are thousands and thousands of like-minded country music fans coming together for a big celebration. While disappointing for this year, we're committed to producing a phenomenal fest in 2021." Approximately 20,000 people attended the 2019 festival. "Our utmost concern is for the safety of our community, festival attendees and staff," Susan Hamley, executive director of the Chester County Visitors Bureau, stated. "It's wonderful to know the festival is returning in 2021. There's certainly demand, and will be even more so when we can all come together for the excitement, merriment and uplifting energy of Citadel Country Spirit USA." Tickets bought for the 2020 event will be honored for 2021; refunds are available as well.

Ultherapy was cleared by FDA officials in 2009 for noninvasive eyebrow lift, noninvasive neck and chin lift, and to improve lines and wrinkles of the décolletage, or chest area. No incisions or general anesthesia are needed. Dr. Himmelstein says the treatment is used on mildly to moderately loose or sagging skin on the face and neck, taking 60 to 90 minutes to treat the entire face and neck, and 30 minutes for a partial face or brow treatment. He says he’s used this technology for the last six years and has seen great results. “Treatment that ‘lifts’ the brow reduces excess skin on the eyelids, making the eyes look more open. Treatment that lifts and tightens sagging skin on the neck and under the chin eliminates or reduces a double chin,” he says. Although some patients may see immediate improvement, Dr. Himmelstein says Ultherapy treatment results are usually apparent within two to three months. At six months, he says full benefits are attained. After the treatment, the restorative process starts with revitalization and tightening of the face. The improvement continues over a period of three to six months, with the results lasting several years or more. Using good skin care products that encourage skin tightening and collagen production will help maintain results. “Ultherapy treatment is not a substitute for a surgical facelift, but is an option for those not interested in or ready for surgery,” he says. “With Ultherapy, you can lift, tone and tighten your skin without the cost, discomfort and downtime associated with cosmetic surgery.” “However, Ultherapy is an excellent option for patients who want to ‘stay ahead of the game,’” he says. Additionally, more men than ever are opting to treat fine lines and wrinkles as well. “Looking young never gets old,” reminds Dr. Himmelstein. 20

Fuz z y Butts Are Best! PREMIUM DOG DAYCARE, BOARDING, GROOMING AND TRAINING IS A WAG AWAY ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY JEFF ROBINSON

West Chester Lifestyle | August 2020

FOR PET OWNERS WHO WANT THEIR DOG KIDS TO BOARD, DAY-PLAY OR BE GROOMED BY DOG LOVERS WHO CELEBRATE ‘DOGS BEING DOGS,’ CHECK OUT THE SAFE, FUN AND STATE-OF-THE-ART SETUP AT FUZZY BUTTS DOGGIE DAYCARE, BOARDING, GROOMING AND TRAINING. “We play, snuggle, hold and interact with all the dogs, and get to know them really well on an individual basis,” assures Fuzzy Butts’ owner Lia Koyner, who took over the facility in 2016 after being a client for five years of the previous owners. Lia says she wants every single dog to be supported with quality care, which is why she and her team guarantee each dog gets four walks a day. With a background in pediatric occupational therapy, Lia understands firsthand the value of therapy dogs and horses in people’s lives. At 12,000 square feet, Fuzzy Butts is the largest dog daycare in the area, with 4,000 square feet of play area divided into three sections, based on dogs’ temperament and breed size. That area is staffed at all times. Their outdoor, covered courtyard provides for climate-controlled, year-round and unleashed dog play. “We want the dogs to get fresh air while always being protected. And our operation is set up so they can’t jump over or dig out,” Lia explains. Safety is a paramount at Fuzzy Butts. That’s why they have no crates or cages. Each dog is provided either a 4x6 or 6x8-foot private suite, including a raised, orthopedic Karunda bed. “We also have geothermal heat, LED lights, skylights for natural lighting, wet/dry vacuum systems, and eco-safe and biodegradable cleaning products, as well as 24-hour cameras throughout the building,” says Lia. She says they also have a sprinkler system all through the facility as a safeguard.

TAKING CARE OF DOGS FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS AND FIRST RESPONDERS Due to COVID-19, Fuzzy Butts closed its daycare and grooming services on March 20. Overnight boarding was still available. Lia says they immediately offered to assist medical professionals and first responders with taking care of their dogs while they worked longer, sometimes erratic shifts. They opened up dog daycare on May 28 for two days a week, then returned to being fully open for all services seven days a week on June 22. They’ve also instituted a phased drop-off procedure as a response to coronavirus safety concerns, which includes a portable holding run that enables clients to unleash and place their dog into the area.

West Chester Lifestyle | August 2020

Owners keep their dog’s leash and collar, and only one dog can be checked in at a time. During each dogs’ stay, they then are handled with leashes that stay on-site and are frequently cleaned. Additionally, the Fuzzy Butts team gives back to the community by assisting local rescue groups, including The Rescue Express and Providence Animal Center through fostering homeless dogs until they get adopted. DOG ENRICHMENTS Bubbles, pool water play days and play equipment round out enjoyment for Fuzzy Butts’ dogs. Lia says they use positive reinforcement for overall control, meaning leashing and redirecting any dog that may be getting assertive, barking or simply having a bad day. She says they are cautious regarding dog behavior to maintain a fun, safe play experience for all dogs. Fuzzy Butts encompasses 75 boarding suites, five deluxe suites, and five pampered pet suites used for pets with special needs. Lia says they can handle up to 60 dogs in daycare. There are some boarding dogs that do not play in the group areas due to age, health issues or temperament. They are exercised independently in the outdoor yard, covered courtyard or the nearby trails. Some pet owners have their dogs board to receive oneon-one training multiple times a day. Clients also can request that nails be done or baths be given while their pets are there. Lia says her husband, Steven, helps to work the operational portion of the business. “We hire other dog lovers, and our staff culture is all about loyalty and building each other up. We’re proud of our work ethic and our staff retention. All of our full-time senior team members have been with us for the past three or four years, and are as eager as us to engage with the dogs,” she says. 610.358.9822 1585 Conchester Highway, Garnet Valley FuzzyButtsPA.com

CUTE KIDS REMEMBER ALL THOSE PROFESSIONAL, STYLIN' HAIRCUTS?!

ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF COOKIE CUTTERS HAIRCUTS WEST CHESTER FROM THE SLIDE AND PLAYLAND IN THE WAITING AREA TO THE TVS, VIDEO GAMES, AND FANTASY CHAIRS ON THE CUTTING FLOOR, THE EXPERT STAFF AT COOKIE CUTTERS HAIRCUTS FOR KIDS IN WEST CHESTER DELIGHTED IN PROVIDING CHILDREN WITH ONEOF-A-KIND EXPERIENCES. They strive to provide a caring environment at which both children and parents are at ease. Their stylists are skilled in cutting hair for all children, including those with special needs. Not all children like to get their hair cut, and now more adults are keenly aware of this struggle -- having lived through a pandemic lockdown. Customers are posting online that they are clamoring to get back to a place where kids discover how much fun haircuts can truly be. “We’re such a new business and we’re building, so this pandemic, as for so many, has been painful. I’m very dedicated to it not just being a business, but to use it to make a difference in our community and be a positive light,” says Joanna Smith who opened the salon in August 2017 with her husband, Jeff.
