We are a family that lives here in town and experiences everything that you—our readers—do. What a year it has been. From kicking off the magazine with a huge launch party and ribbon-cutting last September to supporting local businesses during the coronavirus pandemic, each month has brought new challenges and victories. With the increase of outdoor play at home, two of our daughters learned how to ride their bicycles without training wheels during the quarantine, so when Dr. Joni Redlich of KidPT asked if she could give our readers advice on how to teach children to ride bicycles, we jumped at the chance.

6) WHAT ARE SOME ADAPTIVE OPTIONS FOR KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS? Many children with special needs will be ready to learn to ride later than other children. It is important to let the child’s physical strength, coordination, balance and sensory processing skills guide their readiness, along with the child’s motivation. Children with special needs can benefit from the specialized eye of a physical therapist or occupational therapist, to break down the motor learning process and help make it more successful. Some children with special needs benefit from adaptive bikes to become independent bike riders. Standard training wheels can be too unstable for some children and only work with smaller sized bikes. A product, such as Fat Wheels, can be used to add training wheels to any bike. There are also various styles of adaptive bikes that have different options including three wheels for stability, recumbent bikes, and arm propelled bikes. There are endless opportunities to adapt a bike to a child’s needs. 7) ARE THERE ANY RESOURCES YOU RECOMMEND FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN ABOUT BIKE SAFETY? Kids Health by Nemours has an excellent bike safety resource and the Bike Safety Helmet Institute is a great resource for how to fit a bike helmet properly. Dr. Joni Redlich is a physical therapist and owner of KidPT in Bridgewater. KidPT offers both physical therapy and occupational therapy. Their specialized physical therapists work with babies with developmental challenges, children with neuromuscular disorders, children with autism spectrum disorders and young adults with neurological disorders. Virtual therapy sessions are available as well. Dr. Joni has focused on using children’s strengths, curiosities and learning styles to help them meet their goals. She focuses on the whole child and believes that every child has unlimited potential. kidpt.com

settle their minds, calm their nerves and take a pause. These techniques integrate yoga and mindfulness, a beneficial practice that is sometimes misunderstood. “I often hear, ‘My mind is too busy, I can’t stop the thoughts,’” says Maria. “No one can stop thoughts. Mindfulness is being aware of and observing our current experience with a sense of curiosity; yet, without trying to judge or manipulate it in any way.”
Adopting this mindset, even for a brief period every day, helps to interrupt the chronic stress cycle. Moving and stretching releases tension and reduces discomfort. Breathing practices clear the mind, expand the lungs, and invoke a relaxation response in the body. Dogs and Cats and Bunnies — Oh My! THE SOMERSET COUNTY REGIONAL ANIMAL SHELTER PLACES OVER 1000 ANIMALS PER YEAR IN THEIR “FOREVER HOMES”
THE TERM “SHELTER IN PLACE” HAS A VERY SPECIAL MEANING FOR MANY RESIDENTS OF SOMERSET COUNTY WHO TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADOPT A NEW PET FROM THE SOMERSET COUNTY REGIONAL ANIMAL SHELTER DURING THE PANDEMIC. “This is a great time to adopt since people can bring the animals to their home and bond while everyone is home more,” says Brian Bradshaw, the shelter’s manager. “And since the shelter has rotating schedules and limited staffing, it gives the animals much-needed attention.” Since the coronavirus outbreak, the shelter, at 100 Commons Way in Bridgewater, has offered meet-and-greets and adoptions by appointment. People who are interested can log onto the shelter’s site, its profile on Petfinder, or search available animals on its Facebook site. Those looking to adopt a dog can make an appointment at the shelter where a masked staff member will bring the dog outside on a leash for the prospective owners to walk or play with. The shelter allows prospective

ANIMAL KINGDOM (CONTINUED)
“I would go into shelters to see the dogs and before I knew it, I was working there,” he says. Brian spent his career at shelters around the state before arriving at Somerset County Regional Animal Shelter six years ago. Today, he owns seven dogs and three cats, two of which are from Somerset. “The animal-person bond is a great bond: not only does the pet do well but people do well by adopting an animal.” Brian explains, “It’s a win-win situation.” STAPLE OF THE COMMUNITY The Somerset Regional Animal Shelter has been serving the community since the mid-1970s, performing animal control, picking up strays or unwanted domestic animals and helping injured wildlife get to a proper rehabilitation facility for healing and ultimate return to the wild. They also perform the essential task of trap-neuter-return for feral cats. “Residents let us know if there is a feral cat on their property and we work with them to trap the cat, have it spayed or neutered and vaccinated to prevent the spread of disease and then return it to the community,” explains Brian. The shelter accepts over 1,300 animals a year and adopts over 1,000 annually. The other animals might be transferred to other shelters or, if wild, to wildlife rehabilitation. “We work hard to get these animals into the right homes,” says Brian. “Look at how we have grown in the community: In 2014 we only had 250 adoptions. People come from as far away as out of state to adopt.” 24
Bridgewater Lifestyle | August 2020
This activity keeps the staff and volunteers busy cleaning the shelter, walking the dogs, socializing the cats, and assisting in fundraising and offsite adoption events. “The shelter is such a gem. The staff works hard and loves every animal that comes in the door until they find their forever homes,” says Donna Parolie, who has been a volunteer since 2016 and manages the annual Somerset Regional Animal Shelter Golf Outing fundraiser. She notes the junior volunteer program gives older children an opportunity to serve. Animal retention is an important part of the shelter’s mission. “During the pandemic, we are helping people who are struggling with illness or unemployment by providing food for pets or assisting owners with solving minor behavioral issues,” says Brian. “This helps

to keep the pets out of shelters.” In addition to the animals that come in, the shelter can accept about 350 dogs and cats annually from shelters that become overcrowded. “I love that I’m able to take the stress off of other shelters and save

animals’ lives by putting them in people’s homes,” he says. “People should understand that they do not need to go to the pet stores to buy. This area has a lot of animals in the shelter that need homes.” srasnj.org/adoptions NJ LIC #13VH034102000

NUGGETS AFTER BEING HOMEBOUND FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, MANY PARENTS FEEL FRUSTRATED BY THEIR CHILDREN’S EATING PATTERNS—SNACKING HAS BECOME AMERICA’S FAVORITE PAST TIME. As we prepare to start the school year, it’s time to return to healthy eating. Through their Healthy School Lunch Program, the owners of Catering Solutions, Rebecca and Kim Hassouna of Bridgewater, serve healthy lunches daily to over 50 schools and daycare centers across the state. The concept of well-balanced and healthy meals is a challenge many parents grapple with. “It’s best to look at a well-balanced day as opposed to a meal. We encourage our own children to think about what they’ve eaten and use their snacks to make up for deficiencies. The grains always seem to work themselves out between meals and snacks, but extra proteins and fresh veggies and fruits are always good,” says Rebecca. Integrating vegetables their children like can be difficult, but there are workarounds. “A very nutrient-dense vegetable that doesn’t get much credit is pumpkin. It can be served savory or sweet and is filled with vital minerals and nutrients. It can be served on its own as baby food or included in baked goods like pumpkin muffins.” Rebecca continues, “We even use it in the batter of our chicken nuggets.” Below Rebecca and Kim give us their healthy chicken nugget and pasta salad recipes. These staples are kid-friendly and can be served room temperature, so no need to worry about having to heat them up at lunch. Prepare a batch on Sunday night for the kids to eat all week. They’re so good you’ll find yourself digging in as well.

MEET CHUCKIE THE CHOCOLATE LAB
BRIDGEWATER'S INSTA-FAMOUS DOG
ARTICLE AMY JENSEN INTRODUCING FAMOUS
DOG,
BRIDGEWATER’S CHUCKIE
THE
CHOCOLATE LAB! The baby of the family, Chuckie (13) lives with his
FAVORITE TREAT PEANUT BUTTER
fur-parents, Amy and Roger Jensen and Bert the cat (18). Chuckie has over 8,700 followers on Instagram (@chuckie_the_chocolate_lab_) and 3,700 followers on Facebook! He was even featured on The Dodo in 2018 for his friendship with his favorite mailman, Rene (YouTube: Dog Can’t Wait To See His Mailman Every Single Day). Because
Chuckie
was
rescued
on Valentine’s Day, the Jensen’s now refer to the holiday as “Chuckietine’s Day.” They later rescued another chocolate lab named Nestlé, and the two of them became fast friends. Anyone who meets Chuckie immediately notices his enthusiastic and friendly personality. Chuckie wags his tail so fast it seems he might fly away. Chuckie enjoys swimming, peanut butter,
hamburgers,
and
stealing
socks, shoes—you name it. He keeps his fans and family smiling with all his silly antics! Amy wrote two children’s books about him: Chuckie Makes Mistakes (Sometimes)
and
