However, the World Series win should be erased not just for the Astros, but for the Red Sox, who cheated as well when they beat the Dodgers and they should lose the win as well. However, after thinking about it, I come to an all too obvious and painful conclusion. Why should they? These days, lying, breaking laws and ethical boundaries does not seem to matter as long as you win. This was just baseball. No big deal.

Sutton I would have braved bumper to bumper traffic, but light post-holiday traffic got us there stress-free. While there are several great female jazz vocalists, for my money Tierney Sutton occupies the top tier along with Diane Reeves, Ann Hampton Callaway, Diana Krall and Esperanza Spalding. We had the opportunity to interview her before the show and was that special! Tierney was so into sharing that she dominated the conversation. She answered my questions before I asked them. What a treat! Her background is

of Music in Boston and eventually onto the faculty at USC. She instinctively gravitated to jazz music and learned her craft by emulating musicians, not vocalists. She eventually was inspired by singers Betty Carter (no surprise if you listen to some Betty) and Nancy Wilson. She also loves the jazz side of Joni Mitchell (yes, 60s/70s rockers, it’s there!) to the point where she dedicated an entire album, “After Blue,” to Joni’s compositions. Buy it. It will blow you away. This was all very revealing, because when she sings with the Tierney Sutton Band she is actually one of the musicians. She collaborates and becomes part of the harmonic tapestry along with the great musicians in the band: Christian Jacob, piano; Kevin Axt, bass; Trey Henry, bass; and Ray Brinker, drums/percussion. They were joined on this particular evening for several numbers by French guitarist Serge Merlaud and the iconic Great American Songbook Lyricist 94 years young Alan Bergman. He and his wife Marylin Bergman created the lyrics to many of the best songs from films made during the second half of the 20th century. Go to SongHall.org/Profile/Alan_Bergman to learn more about this wonderful lyric-writing team. Tierney was somehow able to be abstract and ethereal and still swing, because “If it ain’t got that swing, it ain’t jazz!” For this performance she featured her

STOWELL LEARNING CENTER SUPPORTS STUDENTS

Katlyn White works with a student on very specialized exercises to make learning, reading, writing and spelling easy.

STOWELL LEARNING CENTER RECENTLY OPENED ITS DOORS IN THOUSAND OAKS WITH THE MISSION TO HELP SMART STUDENTS WHO STRUGGLE IN SCHOOL.

She discovered three important things:

As an eighth grader, Michael was failing all his classes in private school. If you talked to him, you’d recognize immediately that he was smart. He didn’t seem lazy, but he wasn’t passing his classes. Derek, an extremely bright, charismatic third grader, had an IEP at school. His annual reading goal was to learn 10 “survival words”—that’s hardly learning to read!

01 About 30% of students have some degree of difficulty in school and it’s not because they’re lazy or unmotivated. It’s not because of bad parenting or because teachers don’t know how to teach.

Every day at Stowell Learning Center, you’ll find parents who are trying to help their kids survive, and hopefully thrive, in school. It can be extremely frustrating and lonely trying to find answers when you KNOW your child is smart, but you see their struggle. As a public school Learning Disabilities Specialist many years ago, founder Jill Stowell knew there had to be more that could be done for students who struggle in school. Despite being a very dedicated teacher with a master’s degree in education, Jill observed that there were always students who weren’t learning as easily as they should.

02 There are underlying skills (memory, attention, auditory and visual processing, processing speed and executive functions) that need to be in place to learn academics and do well in school. When bright children or adults struggle, it is most often because some of these underlying skills are not supporting them well enough.

And so, in 1984, she quit her job in the public school and opened a learning center that focused on unlocking the intelligence and

38

competence that lay hidden in these bright but struggling students.

03 Despite the common belief that you just have to

way of school or life. And the solution is permanent.

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | March 2020

Stowell Learning Center Thousand Oaks Director Sharon Diep welcomes students and families to come visit.

Founder, Author, and Executive Director Jill Stowell always knew there were better answers for bright students who struggle in school.

Jill synthesized everything she learned into a comprehensive, proprietary system that builds the underlying skills students need in order to become comfortable, independent learners. Students can build those skills by attending a few sessions each week. This system isn’t used in schools or traditional tutoring. Schools try their best to support students, but the root of the problem is rarely addressed. Even specialized facilities usually have only one piece of the puzzle. Parents see potential that others don’t. When their child struggles or doesn’t achieve, moms and dads want answers… real solutions. Stowell Learning Center focuses on building the skills that make learning easy. During the past 35 years, they’ve changed the lives of thousands of students and their families. And those two students mentioned previously? After attending the learning center… Michael graduated from high school with honors (and as senior class president) and eventually made it to Brown University Medical School. Derek graduated with honors and became a successful theater major in college. Stowell Learning Center has recently added a fourth location in Thousand Oaks, along with its existing centers in Chino, Irvine and Pasadena. Local parents are already seeing the results of building those weak or missing skills as students start achieving more and more success in

USE YOUR SCARS AND FEARS AS STEPPING STONES INSTEAD OF STUMBLING BLOCKS

OUR COMMUNITY HAS RECENTLY ENDURED SOME OF THE HARDEST TIMES IN AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. Thinking back to the big earthquake of 1971, I was very young and lived in Northridge; I didn’t really

REBUILDING OUR C O M M U N I T Y

understand it. Then during the next one in 1994, I had my own children,

58

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | March 2020

making it even scarier! Of course, I’m sure my parents were just as afraid— at that time I had a salon in Northridge that endured lots of damage. We hear about things happening around the world, and of course, our hearts go out to those going through a disaster. When it happens in our own backyard, it really hits home. In our area, it started with the fire in Ventura, followed by the shooting at Borderline, then the next fire and after that, flooding. To all those who lost members of their family, my heart goes out to you. The word resilient comes to mind, but isn’t that what we all do every day? If you were one of the luckier ones who did not lose a home, you are very fortunate. We are always picking up the pieces. It was a very close call for so many, including myself. Yet, I know so many that did lose everything. I’ve had an opportunity to speak with them. It’s really hard to understand what they are feeling, and yet they have picked themselves up and carried on. Our community has been incredible and helped us all to be strong. During the weeks after the fire, it was hard for me to do my show, so I decided to reach out to all the angels in our community who were making a difference and support them by collecting items and bringing food, storing items and raising money through concerts, while also not forgetting all the nonprofits that helped with our misplaced pets—these are the ones I felt compelled to have on my show. Thank you again to all those people who stepped up and wanted to make a difference. Many of the people who lost everything have survived with the support of love and donations. We all know and feel the love of 805 Strong. This is resilience. As the saying goes, “Teamwork is dream work.” When we are helping others, then we can truly help ourselves. Strength does not come from winning. Our struggles develop our strengths. When we go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is true strength.
