HELLO EDEN PRAIRIE LIFESTYLE READERS, In this issue we begin with a celebration of women’s great contributions to our community. We are proud to interview Jaime Grossman, the head coach of the Eden Prairie Eagles whose young women players have demonstrated repeatedly that this town will always be the one to beat at hockey. We feature the Women’s One Acts, a collection of short theatrical performances that only share their talented female writers in common. We also feature Moms on the Run, a locally run fitness group that offers women a great way to exercise in the company of good friends. Although the events in our Calendar and Around Town sections have almost certainly been canceled or postponed, we’re still excited about them. If you share our enthusiasm, please check in with those great organizations to see what they’re

“Some people think all hockey coaches just want to get a guy into the NHL, but coaching girls must feel just as rewarding. Helping young women understand that they can be better, achieve more, and reach and exceed their goals -- that fire burns inside me and keeps me going. I live to watch them discover what they’re capable of, and build the confidence they need to succeed in life. “As an educator, my main goal isn’t winning the title. (But it is nice when we do.) No, it’s about developing future leaders. We live in a society where too many parents try to protect their kids from everything, but you don’t want your daughter to deal with her first big mistake on their own. She has to learn to embrace setbacks and launch herself at her problems twice as hard afterward. The discipline and respect that comes with playing hockey teaches young women how to fall forward. As long as they’re doing that they’re learning and growing, and they’re always going to come out of a challenge better off for it. “I love two things most about coaching young women. First, I get to be a positive male role model, something a lot of kids don’t have in their lives these days. Second, girls naturally do a great job of listening and trying to do exactly what I draw out. Sometimes they listen to a fault, in fact, focusing so hard on following steps that they don’t realize when they need to improvise. Hockey’s too fast-paced a sport to rely on set plays, so it teaches girls how to really think on their feet. “Another thing I like is that girls don’t get as hung up on checking as the boys do. There’s still some physical contact, sure, but girls get to focus more on the technical aspects of the sport. That’s true hockey in my opinion: teammates who understand how to work together and play off each other’s strengths. And these kids are only getting more and more skilled every year. Compared to when I first started out, girl’s hockey has become amazing! “I get to spend time on the ice with kids as young as eight years old. It lets me learn what makes them tick so I can help them develop to their fullest potential when they reach high school. I have seniors who can’t believe that I remember them playing ten years ago, but that’s the kind of benefit that only comes from working for the community for so long. “As the father of a young daughter myself, the greatest compliment I can receive is ‘You’re like a second dad to me.’ Helping the girls of Eden Prairie to become great women is the highest honor I could ever hope for.” CityLifestyle.com/EdenPrairie

MELISSA ENGELSEN IS ON A MISSION TO HELP WOMEN EXERCISE IN A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT

ARTICLE DAVID SCHELLER

AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO HER FOURTH DAUGHTER SIX YEARS AGO, MELISSA ENGELSEN WAS RARING TO GET BACK IN SHAPE. She decided to start running, which is a fine sport: All you need to begin is a pair of sneakers, and your gym is the size of the planet. Also, when you have a little baby girl like Melissa used to, you can just load her into a stroller and cart her around like you’re pushing a babbling lawnmower. But when Melissa’s youngest grew large enough to attract the attention of the public school system, she sought out a group of ladies that would turn her exercise into a social occasion. She found precisely that in the Eden Prairie chapter of Moms on the Run, of which she is now owner and head coach.

Moms on the Run is bigger than just the Eden Prairie chapter, too. We’re a huge community with groups all over the Twin Cities, and at the end of our 18 week training program we all come together to celebrate our hard work. “We are such an open and accepting group of women. There’s never any judgement — just come as you are and you will get fit, make lifelong friends, and escape from whatever responsibilities you might have for the moment!” As a man, I am truly envious of women who get to join Moms on the Run. THE EDEN PRAIRIE PLAYERS CELEBRATES WOMEN’S ACHIEVEMENTS IN THEATER WITH A SPECIAL SELECTION OF PLAYS

18

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | May 2020

EDEN PRAIRIE PLAYERS PRODUCER LIZ MICHAELSON HAD A FORTUITOUS START IN THE THEATER. She owes it to being prepared. “My fourth or fifth grade class was putting together some little play about cowboys,” Liz recalled. “I don’t remember the name of it, but the lead role called for a double holster. Every kid back in the ‘50s had one for their cap gun, but I was the only kid in my class who had two. That was the first spark for me. “I majored in theater in college, but always preferred to stay in production unless I could dance onstage. My back eventually kept me solely in production. I’ve produced plays for years and years now, and have spent the past 16 of them with the Eden Prairie Players, the city’s community theater program.” A small, jingling voice cut out Liz’s at this point during the phone call: “Can I have a pickle?” I excused the producer as she retrieved a dill from the kitchen, accompanied by a gentle lesson on not interrupting grammy while she is being interviewed. “Is it good?” asked Liz. “It tastes like pickles!” answered the jingling voice. “We have always had a strong female presence in the Eden Prairie Players, where women outnumber men five to one,” Liz resumed. “I can’t say that women are generally more inclined toward community theater, but I’ve certainly always been drawn to it. I find that women are often more empathetic to the creative needs of other performers and artists, and receptive to suggestions from the people they work with. “Despite women’s contributions to the theater, we found that they are still underrepresented in the writing and directing community. We started the Women’s One Acts in 2018 to address that very problem. The Women’s One Acts are an opportunity to bring much deserved attention to great female playwrights from across the country. We also bring on female directors from throughout the Twin Cities metro area who have ranged in age from their early 20s to their 70s.

Family Baggage further expounds on the theme of family relationships as a couple attempts to form a fragile connection while waiting for a plane. Finally, this year’s Women’s One Acts will feature Spark F***ing Joy, a telling of two sisters’ dilemma when tasked with sorting through their late mother’s personal effects. (The writer of that play very graciously censored its title herself so that the good people at Eden Prairie Players wouldn’t have to.) “No one’s going to get rich doing community theater,” said Liz. “I know that well. But the connection we get to make with the community, as well as this opportunity to showcase the incredible talents of so many women nationwide, makes everything worthwhile.” She added that men should not get bent out of shape about the production featuring women only, because it doesn’t: Men play important roles in it as well. Hopefully one day they will select my play for production, which is essentially Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth except all the actors are trained German Shepherds. The Women’s One Acts are presented in the Riley-Jacques Barn at Riley Lake Park. In light of recent events this year’s May production is tentatively rescheduled for September. PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

Why stick with one kind of garden? Once you’re a container garden pro, there are tons of different theme gardens you can create all around your home. Save some space by building your garden vertically instead of horizontally. If you’re running out of room indoors, try placing all your pots on an old bookshelf or baker’s rack.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a window garden for basil, cilantro, dill or thyme. In order to grow larger plants, such as tomatoes, lemons or — yes, even avocados — you’ll need some larger containers, like large pots, baskets or box planters.
