TIMES PAST HAYDEN HOUSE RESTORED TO ORIGINAL SPLENDOR

DECKED OUT FOR VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS THE ORIGINAL HAYDEN HOUSE IN ST. PAUL WAS BUILT IN 1900. For its time, the house was a grand structure, with large rooms and hallways, bay windows and iron work characteristic of the Victorian period. The original owner, James Rapier (J.R.) Hayden was born in 1849 in St. Paul. He graduated from Christian Brothers College and married Rosa Bowles, who inherited a 400-acre farm from her grandfather, Walter Bowles. The couple intended to live as farmers and J.R. built a splendid oak barn on the property. But, due to health issues, they sold the farm to the Dyer family and purchased 15 acres of land and a general store in the town of St. Paul in 1881. J.R. built a beautiful house for his growing family on the new property. This is the house that is still there today, referred to as the Hayden House. The house was almost lost in a fire at one point, but the family fought hard and carried buckets of water from a nearby cistern, leaving only damage to the back single-story lean-to. After the repairs, the house served the family well until J.R. died in 1934. Through the years, the house transitioned into apartments for some years, but has now been restored back to a single-family home by 14

Mike and Rachael Siegler, who bought the Hayden House in 2016 and have been working on restoring the home back to its grand Victorian style. They installed a new red metal roof, siding, storm windows and shutters and have built a barn in the back. The kitchen has been remodeled, floors refinished and the interior has been beautifully appointed in the Victorian style. The Sieglers have always loved antiques and find the history of items and properties fascinating. They say the restoration of this home has been an enjoyable journey and they hope it can continue to inspire and be cared for by generations to come. December 2019 | St. Charles County Lifestyle

The city of O’Fallon kicks off its annual holiday light display on Nov. 29 and it will run through Dec. 30. Each scene is designed and funded by local organizations, churches and businesses. “These nonprofits design and construct many of the displays and then work the event. In exchange, they receive a portion of the proceeds,” says Tom Drabelle, with the City of O’Fallon. “It really makes the event a community-driven one, so not only do you see more than a million lights along the 1-mile display, you are helping local organizations too!” Visitors may walk along the illuminated route, enjoy holiday music, visit with Santa and watch a fireworks show at 7:25 p.m. Holiday gifts and food will be on sale from O’Fallon-based nonprofit organizations. TRAVEL DESTINATION

ARTICLE COURTESY ROBIN BRENGLE—CRUISE PLANNERS

Experience the Wonders of the Mediterranean SURROUNDED BY WONDERS, IT’S EASY TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE NUMEROUS COASTAL CITIES IN THE WEST AND EAST MEDITERRANEAN, SITUATED ON THE BREATHTAKING SOUTHERN EUROPEAN COAST. Here is a sampling of some of the highlights in this unforgettable region:

S PA I N Old meets new in Barcelona. Narrow alleyways contrast with grand boulevards and trendy cuisine meets homemade tapas. For the adventuresome, visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the mind-boggling La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, with its decorative spires soaring hundreds of feet. The beautiful port city of Tarragona has its own spectacular cathedral, lovely beaches, Roman ruins of Tarraco, and an amphitheater by the sea. Looking for a little fun in the sun? Mallorca is fringed with more than 200 beaches; or if shopping is more your style, you can visit the many shops of Paseo de Borns. A stroll to the walled town of Cartagena ends at a large naval shipyard and a wide range of activities from windsurfing to snorkeling to sailing. An art lover? Visit the shores of Costa del Sol to view Picasso’s work at Museo Picasso in the city of his birth. 32

GREECE This small country bears 3,000 years of history. The Acropolis, the Plaka, and the Acropolis Museum are must-sees. If you can climb, head to Pnyx Hill for sunset photos of the Parthenon. Monemvasia holds treasures that are old even by Med standards. Climb to the upper town for an up-close look at the castle, a Byzantine church or wander the lanes of the lower town lined with Venetian mansions.

I TA LY In Rome, intermingled among ancient ruins and majestic cathedrals are modern skyscrapers and boutiques. Visit the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica to view works by Bernini, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Raphael. Tour ancient ruins—the Colosseum, Forum, Circus Maximus and don't forget to throw coins in the Trevi Fountain, promising your return to the Eternal City. UNESCO Sites abound in Sorrento, including the archaeological sites of Pompeii and the fourth-century B.C. city of Herculaneum. Perched on the spectacular Amalfi Coast, Sorrento offers exceptional views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius.

C R OAT I A Stroll the walled city of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, where no cars are allowed. Take in exhilarating views of the harbor and visit Buza Café watching divers leap off the cliffs into the sea. A Roman amphitheater, ninth-century churches, and museums crowd the peninsula that contains the Old Town of Zadar, home to a giant Sea Organ, a haunting musical improv performed by the surging Adriatic. By land or sea (and road, bike, foot and rail), discover the magic of the Mediterranean coast—from ancient ruins to the pure indulgence of the Med lifestyle.
