FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS, WE’VE KNOWN APRIL 25 AS THE “PERFECT DATE.” In the film “Miss Congeniality,” Miss Rhode Island Cheryl Frasier (played by Heather Burns), says the iconic line as an answer to a question posed by William Shatner’s Stan Fields during a beauty pageant.

Fields asks Frasier to “describe her perfect date,” to which she responds, “That’s a tough one. I’d have to say April 25. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket.” In this month of the "perfect date," we honor our natural environment that is bursting with new life, colors and fragrances. 7890 EAST 106TH PLACE S | TULSA, OKLAHOMA

NOW OPEN

Greetings, my name is Travis J Davidson, Owner and Operator of Cardinal Club at 106th and Memorial. I would love to share my vision with you in hopes that you would stop by and allow me the opportunity of meeting you face-to-face. First, let me tell you a bit about our concept. Cardinal Club is a semi-private restaurant and cigar lounge in South Tulsa. We are the ideal concept for both business and pleasure. It’s a place that you can enjoy top-shelf cuisine and take part in networking and social opportunities. You can host meetings or parties, and then take advantage of our multi-theme environment including the smoke-free dining, the elegant bar, and a separate, comfortable cigar lounge. We knew that there was no place that could offer a no-distraction lunch to the professionals of South Tulsa. Theres always the crying baby, the high-school buddy, or the little league team, that derails an important business lunch. This isn’t the case with Cardinal Club, as we make sure that your important business lunch goes off without a hitch. We are thrilled to bring fine dining, craft cocktails, and a membership program to South Tulsa. The area has been starved for a concept like ours and we are going to do our best to fill an inexplicable void. No longer do you need to drive downtown or midtown to get USDA Prime Steaks, American Wagyu, Craft Cocktails, and the freshest of seafood. Our hours are a bit confusing, as we are a completely new concept, but let me let me explain them for you here. Monday through Friday, 11am-5pm, we are open only to members. Monday through Friday, 5pm-10pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 11am-10pm, we are open to the public. So don’t be scared away by the membership hours. Hopefully I offered a bit of clarity and intrigue, and I can’t wait for you to come in so I can meet you! You can reach out to me personally with any questions at Travis@CardinalClubTulsa.com Travis J Davidson

celebrating disability inclusion ARTICLE VICTORIA LADD

“INSPIRE! Celebrating Disability Inclusion,” is an exclusive, semi-formal fundraising event designed to honor and recognize those individuals, companies or organizations who are making strides in disability awareness and inclusion. This year’s honoree is Matthew Sanford who has overcome tremendous obstacles after sustaining a spinal cord injury in a car accident as a child. Matthew’s story is told in his book, “Waking: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence.” The event takes place Saturday, June 27, at The Center beginning at 5 p.m. with a fun cocktail party and plated dinner at 6:30 p.m. Following a short program and award presentation, the Celebration continues with dancing to live music by SquadLive until 11:30 p.m.

Be inspired by seeing the new facilit y expansion, ‘ The Hardest y Family Adaptive Sports Complex’ and all it offers. Inspire! Celebrating Disability Inclusion directly benefits The Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges, a provider of fitness, recreation, social and cultural opportunities for those with disabilities in the Tulsa community for 63 years. It is the only state-of-the-art facility specifically designed and adapted for those with disabilities. The Center serves stroke survivors, individuals with traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries, vision or hearing impairments, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, diabetes, arthritis, obesity and many other diagnoses. More than 1,400 members, their families and caregivers use the facility and services each year. Most recently, programming for disabled children and youth was added.

Consider supporting this great cause that helps so many people in the Tulsa community, and it’s a fun night out! Sponsorships are available and individual early-bird tickets can be purchased before May 1. Ticket sales end June 12. For more information visit TulsaCenter.org.

FERTILIZERS Use eco-friendly chemicals and fertilizers. Tom’s says “When home owners request an eco/organic approach to weeds and insects, we have a few options for them.”

IRRIGATION Drip irrigation feeds water directly to the plant’s roots saving water. Traditional irrigation sprays water in the air so a portion is carried away by the wind and

LIGHTING AND WARMTH Use LED bulbs. They are energy efficient therefore reducing the energy bill, reducing the demand from power plants and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. They do not contain toxic elements which helps protect the environment from further toxic waste. They have better quality light distribution so fewer lights are needed which reduces energy consumption and LED’s have a longer life span which means lower carbon emissions. Use energy efficient outdoor heaters. RETAINING WALLS Gabion natural stone walls reduce the use of formed concrete. MULCH & COMPOST Mulch grass and leaf clippings to use as a natural fertilizer on the lawn. When done correctly mulching returns nitrogen, potassium and phosphor into the ground and provides up to 25 percent of the total nutrients needed for a year. It saves time, labor and money because there is less raking, use of less fertilizer and less trash. If you don’t mulch the leaves, they can be composted. RECLAIM. REUSE. REPURPOSE Use recycled aggregate (crushed cement, concrete or asphalt from construction debris) for concrete and other applications. This protects natural resources and eliminates the need for disposal. Use composite decking boards made with recycled wood and plastic. Use reclaimed natural stone and wood. SUSTAINABLE DESIGN A quality design integrates storm water management, native plant material and local building materials whenever possible. TREE PLACEMENT Trees can be placed to block the summer sun and cold winter winds saving on energy costs. For eco-friendly ideas or a sustainable design, visit TomsOutdoorLiving.com or call 918-695-1653. About the author - Brandon Zinter is the fertilization division leader at Tom’s Outdoor Living.

to them—along with their ideas on environmental protection.

ACTIVITIES: Tulsa Term program, saxophone, drama/ theater and Chinese studies WHAT DOES YOUR FUTURE HOLD, AND WHY? I plan on attending college at Northwestern University in Chicago. I’m not sure yet what area of study I want to pursue. HOW HAS HOLLAND HALL PREPARED YOU FOR THAT FUTURE? Above all else, I am a much better writer than I would have been without Holland Hall. Every class has some focus on writing, which has really helped me hone that skill. Also, because Holland Hall is so small, it’s given me the ability to become comfortable with public speaking and cultivate other skills that I will take with me after graduation. And the Tulsa Term program has been amazing—I have been able to take classes at Tulsa City Hall; it is essentially project-based education that integrates all of the different subjects together, and it has given me a great perspective on how to apply knowledge in real life. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY DOING OR HOPE TO DO INTHE FUTURE TO HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS? I am continually thinking of the effects my actions have on the world. I try to reduce my environmental impact and consumption, and I remember to clean up after myself. Whatever field I go into in the future, I will remain environmentally conscious, so that I can make a difference in this world.

ACTIVITIES: basketball, track, shotput, discus, choir, volunteering at a local food bank WHAT DOES YOUR FUTURE HOLD, AND WHY? I plan on going to college on a basketball scholarship and majoring in biology with a premed track. I hope to be an anesthesiologist or an orthopedic surgeon one day. HOW HAS HOLLAND HALL PREPARED YOU FOR THAT FUTURE? The smaller class sizes here have allowed me to make greater connections and cultivate stronger relationships with people, both students and teachers. The teachers here have been great; I have learned so much from them. They have vouched for me, and I know they are committed to my success. I feel that all these close-knit relationships have given me better communication skills, and I know I will carry these skills with me after I graduate. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM HOLLAND HALL? I recently broke the points record for Holland Hall in a recent basketball game against our rival, Cascia Hall, with three dunks. The previous record holder was named Brock, too, so that was crazy. That was a big moment for all of us—for me, my parents, and the whole Holland Hall community! WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY DOING OR HOPE TO DO IN THE FUTURE TO HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS? I have learned to really pay attention to my impact on the earth. I try to limit my use of plastics, recycling as much as I can. I also try to use reusable drink containers instead of disposable cups and straws. We have studied here how much our use of plastics affects life in the ocean, and so reducing the amount of plastic we discard can really make a difference.

I really look forward to attending medical school, either here in Oklahoma at OU or at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. HOW HAS HOLLAND HALL PREPARED YOU FOR THAT FUTURE? The modular scheduling system we have here is incredible. It gives us a lot of free time, which really prepares us for real life. We must practice good time management and self-monitoring skills, but it gives us the freedom to pursue lots of interests, too, as well as develop relationships with our fellow students and our teachers. The close-knit community and the relationships I’ve built here have given me good people skills to carry into the future. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM HOLLAND HALL? All the memories I’ve created here are so good! They all come from the relationships that I’ve built with people through sports, through participating in drama and musicals, and with the smaller class sizes. There’s a closeness we can develop here among the students, and I love the memories I’ve made here. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY DOING OR HOPE TO DO IN THE FUTURE TO HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS? We are working on our recycling program here at Holland Hall; that is one of the things our environmental club has been focusing on. We did a presentation recently on trash in the ocean, and we also have trash pickup days here on campus. In the future, I am resolved to continue to be mindful of the environment and help to educate people on all these issues, to help keep our world a clean and beautiful place.

WHAT DOES YOUR FUTURE HOLD, AND WHY? Before I became a teacher, I ran several large national arts organizations, and I created the largest outdoor arts festival in the country, and then ran the largest writers’ organization in the country in Washington, DC. I’ve been teaching at Holland Hall for 24 years, and this is my last year before retirement. I came to teach here because I wanted to be able to spend more time with my family. It has been such a rich experience here because of the fun and diverse experiences we cultivate with the students. After I retire, I plan to write more books and travel. In July, I will be participating in a bicycle ride across the state of Iowa, which should be a lot of fun! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM HOLLAND HALL? My favorite times here have been spent watching my students grow and learn, especially through the Downtown Tulsa Studies program and its offshoot, Tulsa Term. The kids have been able to get out and participate in the community and make a difference. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY DOING OR HOPE TO DO IN THE FUTURE TO HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS? Our Downtown Tulsa Studies program has discussed many environmental issues, and our students have proposed greater uses for the Arkansas River and how it might be developed in the future. Holland Hall looks at issues through a variety of perspectives in our classes. We strive to make connections between the various classes that the students take. Everything relates together in the larger world; the English classes connect to the science classes, and so forth, and our science classes especially focus on caring for the environment in responsible ways.

MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

Stock Options Often Overlooked in Divorce Settlements

In any divorce, all marital property and debt have to be divided. In an equitable division state, marital property and debt are to be divided in a just manner when considering all the statutory factors. Stock options are often overlooked by many parties when dividing marital property and debt. Some parties might forget to include them on their financial statements inoccently. In other cases, a party might, unfortunately, fail to disclose them in hopes that the other party does not discover it. In a divorce, it is vital that both parties act in an above-board manner. One way to do this is to inform the other party of all marital property and debt that exists. This means that parties going through a divorce should check with their employer, if they do not know, about whether they have any stock options. Often, the best place to inquire is through the human resource and/or benefits department. It also might mean the party who suspects that their spouse might have stock options ensures that the lawyer inquires about this in the discovery process or otherwise. In an uncontested divorce where parties desire to settle the parties need to be able to trust that their spouse will voluntarily disclose if

stock options exist. If stock options do exist, there are a few different ways in which these stock options can often be dealt with in a divorce. First, if possible, these stock options can be divided as the date of divorce in an equitable manner. But in some cases, dividing the stock options as of the date of the divorce is not possible. This may be because the options are not vested yet. Some employer terms may also not allow stock options to go to a non-employee. In these cases, there are really two options. One, the stock options may end up being divided later into the future once they vest. That said, the spouse who has the stock options might argue that since the option interest has not vested, they have not acquired them yet and, thus, they should be off the table. Or, two, sometimes the stock options can be offset by other marital property. But to do this, the parties will need to have the value of the stock options properly valuated. Otherwise, a fair offset cannot be reached. Valuating stock options can be somewhat complex. However, with the help of a financial expert, a

value can almost always be determined. CONSIDERED A RARE SPECIES OF SPECIAL CONCERN IN OKLAHOMA AND MANY OTHER STATES AND HAS BEEN DECLARED EXTINCT IN ARIZONA. The Oklahoma State University Extension Service says that in Oklahoma, there are an estimated 60,000 acres of grasslands occupied by prairie dogs which represents a small percentage of the historical acreage of this species. The herbivory, burrowing, and mound building activities of prairie dogs create conditions which support more than 200 animal species as well as a diversity of plants and insects. The prairie dog is therefore known as a keystone species which means it is a vital part of the native range land. Continuous soil disturbance and herbivory strongly influence the plant community as well. Without the prairie dog, these distinct plant communities would be lost. Prairie dogs are an important component of healthy, native range lands in Oklahoma.
