TIME FOR FAMILY... FAMILY, IN THE TRADITIONAL SENSE, MAY INCLUDE A MOTHER, A FATHER, A COUPLE OF KIDS, A DOG, AND MAYBE A CAT WHO LIVE IN A NICE HOME WITH A WHITE PICKET FENCE... but let’s face it, in most cases family life has a wide spectrum of realities. Even in this “traditional” scenario, from outside appearances, that “traditional

and a sense of belonging. If we are lucky, we have that from the beginning through our given family, but in reality, family has so many meanings and stretches way beyond the traditional sense. To me, family is more of a feeling—it’s really about connection. It’s about how a group of people (related or not) love and care for one another, whether they live together or not. Let’s not forget our animals... our pets are also a huge part of our families and bring the gift of unconditional love into our family lives! Over the past several months, with the global pandemic we have all been facing, family is more important than ever. We have been spending more time together, having to practice patience and allowing space, when it’s not always possible. For me, this time has been a wonderful opportunity for reflection. I have been able to slow down, connect, and really experience my family in ways that daily life usually distracts from. It’s been a great blessing for me. This has gone beyond the family in my home and has made me long for greater con-

MCCORMICK, GAINEY, CHAUNCEY AND WRIGLEY ARE FAMILIAR, PARTICULARLY IF YOUR HOME IS IN ONE OF THE HOUSING COMMUNITIES CARRYING THOSE SAME NAMES. The names trace back to the 1940s, when prominent Arabian horse breeders made Scottsdale home. Homes were then built on what was once sprawling pasture land and/or extravagant facilities for horses and their owners. It all began in 1942, when Anne and Fowler McCormick bought acreage near Scottsdale and Indian Bend roads. This was later referred to as Paradise Park, and the family began raising Arabian horses. Others followed by the mid1950s, and Scottsdale was well on its way to becoming an Arabian Horse mecca.

The Arizona Biltmore Hotel was built on land formerly owned by the Wrigley family, and became the home of the very first Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show in 1955. This is now an annual event held in February, and considered to be the largest and greatMcCormick Ranch in the 1950s

est horse show in the world. The Arabian Horse Association of Arizona (AHAA) was established at that same time with only 12 members, and today boasts more than 500. The AHAA made the decision to move the annual Scottsdale Show to Paradise Park in 1958, where it remained for 10 years. The McCormick family sold Paradise Park in 1970, and the land became one of the first planned housing communities in Scottsdale. Rapid urban development continued, and by the late 1970s, the AHAA was looking for another home for its annual horse show. Paradise Park II had been built on Bell Road, where the show moved and remained through 1988 until that land was subsequently sold and developed into another affluent housing development. Bell Road also became home to a legendary operation, Karho. Established by Dr. Howard Kale in the 1970s, Karho was named for the Kale Arabian Horse family. Dr. Kale became influential in importing and breeding Russian Arabian horses, and was a huge presence in the Arabian horse industry. Today, while the Bell Road farm is a thing of the past, Kale’s granddaughter Joanna remains active in the Arabian horse community. While the history of Arabian horses seems to have succumbed to urban development, it has become greater and stronger in present day. Located on Cactus Road, Sandspur Ranch remains and is now home to Pegasus Arabians. Internationally respected breeders and exhibitors such as Midwest and Cedar Ridge Arabians, whose home bases are well established in Minnesota, have come to call Scottsdale their second homes. Extravagant facilities have also been built on Arabian Park Drive (just off Shea Boulevard and 112th Street). Then there is WestWorld of Scottsdale. The massive facility became home to the

annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show in 1989. With so many breeders and exhibitors in the surrounding area, the show could easily operate as a local event, but today exhibitors from around the world make it a part of their annual competition schedule. More than 2,000 Arabian horses and their owners, trainers, and admirers descend on WestWorld in late February, bringing credence to the claim that the show is the largest and greatest on earth. Longtime Scottsdale resident, Arabian horse owner, and current President of the AHAA, Taryl O’Shea, states, “Arabian horse people love Scottsdale for the

SITTING DOWN TO TALK WITH ARIE LUYENDYK JR. and Lauren Burnham Luyendyk takes a few tries to coordinate a time—we’d caught them in the midst of moving from Arcadia to Scottsdale, juggling multiple careers each, and all while also caring for their 1-year-old daughter, Alessi (no, they don’t have many babysitters!). We set a time around her nap, and settled in to chat. You’ve probably heard the story of how the couple first met—this perfectly made match actually happened on reality TV… 2018’s The Bachelor, to be exact. After a brief split and a bit of a rocky start, the couple reunited. Lauren then moved to Scottsdale to be with Arie, and the couple married in January 2019.

Fast-forward to today, and the Luyendyks are busy spending time with Alessi, settling into their new home, launching and running businesses, and just generally enjoying each other’s company.

While he and Lauren first settled in Arcadia, they now look to the new Scottsdale home as a place to raise their family. “We love it,” Lauren says. “It’s beautiful and quiet over here. It’s also bigger, and we’re looking to expand our family.”

“The other day we were having coffee and sitting out in

“And I think for me, I came into [the show] just a normal person working in the corporate world, living by myself, and then all of a sudden I’m married, I have a baby, I live in Arizona, and I have a totally different business,” Lauren shares. “So for me, I could have never expected my life to look this way back then. BRINGING UP ALESSI While they both would love “more babies!” they are also busy with Alessi. She turned 1 in May, and recently began walking. She also loves to dance.

The family enjoys morning walks, where they watch the birds and rabbits nearby, which Alessi loves. “I think we’ve transitioned well into being parents,” Arie says. “It’s hard at first because they just hand you your baby and they’re like, ‘Good luck,’ but I feel like we’ve really got it down now. It took a year, but we’re doing good! It’s the most fun chapter of my life.” Lauren agrees that it is difficult, but also that it’s the most fun thing she’s done. “I always loved kids, but I wasn’t one of those people who was like, ‘I was born to be a mom,’” she says. “But now that she’s here, I look back and feel like this is what I was meant to do—to be her mom.” WORK, WORK, WORK The Luyendyks also stay busy with multiple ventures. Arie has been a realtor in the Valley since 2004, and is currently the associate broker at ReMax Excalibur (RealtyByArie.com), while Lauren has a clothing line called Shades of Rose (TheShadesOfRose. com), which is launching this month. “I’ve been working on it for two years,” she shares. “Since middle Photo provided

“I originally wrote the story in college as part of a creative writing project. The project was to write about an inanimate object and to have it represent something.” At the time, Hauk explored the notion of friendship through pennies and a penny jar. Her professor was impressed and told her to hold on to the work—that she had an amazing story that had the potential to be big as a children’s book.

As fate would have it, Hauk and Steward quickly realized that they lived in the same complex. They decided to meet up—and everything quickly fell into place. Steward connected Hauk to the publisher she had worked with, and Hauk sent in the manuscript. They loved it. Though based on her original concept from 20 years

The story is set in and around Gilbert, so locals will easily recognize the illustrated setting. While it is already catching on with readers and garnering a following, the book is also a hit with teachers due to the lesson it teaches. Hauk created a school and library kit, as well as a penny jar activity, to go along with the book, and is booking author visits (in-person or virtual) for the upcoming school year. The publisher liked the story so much that they already committed to a three-book series. The next story, set to debut this fall or winter, features Garrett at the main character and talks about looking for the good in life. The third book, due out next spring, showcases Angus, and deals with the anguish of losing a pet. “I [wrote Sawyer’s Two Cents] because it was a lifelong dream. I hope people like it and learn from it, and get something out of it. Navigating friendships is so hard, and I want kids to know that they should look for the friends that will always be there for them and not just surface level,” she says of her first book. Steward will also illustrate her next books. For more information, visit StaciHauk.com. Books can also be purchased at that website, or at Amazon.com or BarnesAndNoble.com.

SUNLAND HOME CARE PROVIDES ONEON-ONE CAREGIVERS, COMPANIONS, OR PERSONAL CARE AIDES TO ASSIST ITS CLIENTS WITH THE ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING, FROM PERSONAL CARE TO MEAL PREPARATION. Owned by members of the Farnsworth family, who have been serving seniors in the East Valley since 1958, Sunland is locally-owned and -operated with a firm commitment to the family name and legacy that it carries. “I grew up working and serving seniors since my family has been doing it for over 60 years. This is something that I have carried on with my own children and these ideals are exemplified within my company culture,” partner Traci Ahlstrom Beagley says. The Sunland mission is focused on preserving the independence, dignity, and quality of life for aging or infirm loved ones who prefer to stay in their own homes. It’s a mission that Beagley has a personal connection to. “In 2018 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was so sick from chemotherapy, and my life revolved around doctor’s appointments. I was the primary caregiver of my own family, but I wasn’t able to do that anymore. I lost my independence and had to rely on others for everything. I was so frustrated and scared. Now, I bring that knowledge of having been a patient myself, to Sunland. I can relate to people on a more personal level. I empathize, and validate the feelings they (and their families) are going through.” Sunland Home Care strives to provide high continuity of care by having the same handful of care professionals coming in and out of the client’s home. Sunland has also implemented a Remote Nurse Monitoring Program during these trying times.

the Sunland Difference: Ted hired Sunland Home Care three years ago to care for his wife before she passed away. Ted retells the story (with tears in his eyes) of his wife’s caregiver Claire next to his wife while she was passing, and holding her hand.

Karen was with her client, Duke, for over a year. The family was apprehensive about having someone come in the home, but with his Parkinson’s diagnosis, caring for Duke was getting really stressful for his wife. Not only was Karen there for Duke, but she was a great support for his wife as well. Eventually, Duke’s health declined and he was admitted to hospice. Karen sat by his side and watched him breathe, rubbed his hand and gave him water. Karen was with him and the family until the very end.

“We have a nurse calling each one of our clients and caregivers each week to follow up with them on any questions they have about COVID-19 and ask about any symptoms they may have. We have all the necessary PPE, and have been providing these items to our caregivers and clients at no charge. Our nurse has made extra visits to clients, when requested, to work with them during this time.” Beagley has felt a strong pull to support the community during COVID-19 as well, by giving back to front line workers. From hiring an ice cream truck that visited 10 communities to distribute ice cream sandwiches to seniors and healthcare workers to holding food drives for United Food Bank at a time when they didn’t have any food to distribute, Sunland works to help those who need it most. “It’s all about people. When you put people first, everything else falls into place. We feel a privilege to provide a service in our community that helps people and we don’t take that lightly. It’s our responsibility to take care of our neighbors in the community when they can’t take care themselves.” For more information, visit SunlandHomeCareAZ.com.

“I KNOW WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES, WHEN THE FAMILY REACHES OUT TO US AND THANKS US FOR AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE AND TELLS US THEY COULDN’T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT US. WHEN WE MATCH UP THE RIGHT CLIENT WITH THE RIGHT CAREGIVER— IT’S BEAUTIFUL.” CityLifestyle.com/Scottsdale 33
