AN ARRAY OF OUTDOOR FESTIVALS FROM THE TULSA STATE FAIR TO OKTOBERFEST. In each one of our celebrations with friends and family, good food and drink is a key element. Recently, my family surprised me with a birthday dinner at Polo Grill in Utica Square where we enjoyed an elegant atmosphere combined with the finest food. Later in the month, we celebrated my nephew’s birthday at Tally’s Café on Route 66, where we had the best "breakfast for dinner" ever in true roadside diner style. While the entire family may not always see each other as a group on a daily basis, we do come together to celebrate birthdays and other milestones, and food is always at the center of it all. The food and drink scene in Tulsa has really changed over the past decade with more options than ever before. In fact, there are so many choices that I quite often turn to apps like OpenTable or TapHunter to find just the right spot. The craft beer business

tuous Italian food to healthy acai bowls, the latest in craft beer, recipes for decorating sugar cookies with the kids and mixing tailgate drinks for friends. Enjoy the beautiful weather of October by celebrating your family with food and drink. Start a collection of fall leaves. Buy a pumpkin. Visit a brewpub. Attend a festival and dance your heart out. Make sugar cookies. And, just have fun.

AUTHENTIC FOOD FROM THE ALOISIO FAMILY

Mondo's, a taste of Italy in Tulsa

ARTICLE C.L. HARMON | PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL MCRUIZ

Mondo's on Peoria in Brookside a tradition 50 years in the making.

Tulsa Lifestyle | October 2019

Best bruschetta on Brookside from Mondo's.

HALF A CENTURY IS A LONG TIME TO DO SOMETHING … WELL, DO ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER. In a world where so many things come and go fading away into our memories, what is it that makes some last and others not? To answer this question, why not ask a family that has done it? Perhaps it’s a secret but a better answer would probably be tradition. And, not the tradition established back in October of 1969 that began when Lou Aloisio, a.k.a. Papa Lou, opened Mondo’s Ristorante Italiano, but one that goes back to Italy where the recipes and atmospheres for authentic Italian food were created. Everything seems to revolve around family and tradition and that is exactly what one experiences while dining at Mondo’s. In fact, most of the employees are related spanning three generations of American Italians preparing meals using the same recipes and care that was brought over by Lou’s father Angelo, a chef in Italy before coming to America in 1920.

MONDO’S

(CON TI N U ED)

“This is truly a family-owned and operated restaurant. Our motto is, whenever the doors are open, there is always an Aloisio in the house,” son and part-owner Rob Aloisio said. “We just won ‘Best Italian Restaurant in Tulsa’ from the

Everything Italian! Even the pizza is made with amore.

voters through the Tulsa World. We have won this award numerous times over the years,” he said. He explained that this is because the family takes pride in their food and the service offered by a true American-Italian family in true Italian style. At the heart of the operation is of course 86-year-old founder Lou who can often be seen in the dining area, “shaking hands, kissing babies,” and interacting with the guests. Rob and two brothers, Mike and Christo, take care of the day-to-day operations. Rob says the restaurant’s many regulars have been dining there for years and its element of not changing with the times contributes to this success. For instance, the original sauce made from scratch and recipes like lasagna and homemade meatballs is still the same as 50 years ago. Mondo’s is located on Peoria in Brookside and is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-11 p.m. and Sunday 3-9 p.m. 18

Here to Help You Rebuild Your Life® Court dates in divorce and family law matters can be stressful. The thought of coming to court can cause stress and anxiety. Many might even be worried about being seen by others they know. They might feel embarrassed if others see them. Others might not want to take the time off work. They’d rather save their vacation and personal days for a more joyous experience. There are many different types of court dates in divorce and family law matters. Apart from trials, there can be pretrial conferences, settlement conferences, motion dates and even temporary hearings. Even when a person has a lawyer, they wonder whether they should show up to court. “Is it necessary for me to appear?” “If I don’t show up, and my lawyer appears for me, does it matter?” “If I’m not needed in court, would I be wasting my time and my paid time off by appearing?” These, and other questions like this, are common when facing this situation. The reality is that an individual going through a divorce or family law matter should discuss this with their lawyer. Having this discussion is critical versus

Should I show up to court? not showing up. There might be some situations where the lawyer can show up without their client. But as a general rule, when in doubt, show up to court. Bad things could happen when a party does not show up. This is even more important where a party does not have a lawyer. Showing up to court is something many judges also notice. When a party shows up, it sends a message to many judges that the party cares about their case. It shows that their case is a priority. On the flip end, if a party does not show up to court, it can send the opposite message that this is not a priority to the party. When a judge believes that the matter is not a priority, this can sometimes lead to a judge having an adverse impression. This can correlate to a potential adverse result. For this reason, most parties should err on the side of showing up to every date. The truth is that the impact of these cases can be long-lasting. A judge should understand that the party has made the case a priority. Even dressing appropriately for court can

Red, White and Blue acai bowl from ah-Sigh-e in Bixby. 22

Tulsa Lifestyle | October 2019

With all the great holiday par ties coming up AT THE END OF THE YEAR, IT’S GOOD TO HAVE HEALTHY OPTIONS TO OFFER YOUR GUESTS OR TO HELP YOU MAINTAIN THE FANTASTIC SHAPE YOU’VE EARNED OVER THE SUMMER. A new restaurant called ah-Sigh-e will help you do both. Located on South Memorial in Bixby, ah-Sigh-e is the love child of Trena and Jason McGill, recent transplants from Naples, Florida. The name “ah-Sigh-e” is a unique take on the key ingredient in the establishment’s acai bowls and smoothies. The acai berry is an inch-long, reddish-purple fruit and comes from the acai palm tree native to Central and South America. Some studies show that acai fruit pulp is richer in antioxidants than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries or blueberries. “One of our favorite meals while living in Naples was the acai bowl,” said Jason. “We couldn’t find any restaurants serving anything close to what we were used to in Florida, so we decided to start our own restaurant.” Soon, the enterprising family opened at 123rd and Memorial. “We like to say that we make eating healthy more of a treat than a chore,” said Jason. Their acai blends and smoothies are dairy and refined sugar-free, and sweetened with raw, local honey. A favorite bowl is the Crazy for Cacao including acai, cacao powder and nibs, almond milk, cherries, mangos, blueberries, strawberries, granola and local honey. Yum. The restaurant is cute, breezy and beachy. If you’re planning a party, ah-Sigh-e caters. Home and business delivery is offered through DoorDash and you can order from their website at ahsighe.com. Through December 2019, Jason is offering first timers a free medium bowl or smoothie - something worth checking out. Just text FREEBOWL to 59925.

Offering a healthy option to meals and snacks, ah-Sigh-e makes acai bowls and smoothies.

EXPLOSION EXPERIENCE EIGHT OF THE STATE'S MOST UNIQUE BREWERIES

NOT THAT

LONG

AGO,

THE

OKLAHOMA CRAFT BEER SCENE WAS SMALL AND ALMOST NON-EXISTENT. Revered pioneers including Choc Beer Company, Marshall

Brewing

and

COOP helped to pave the way for the explosion of craft breweries we see today. Thanks to overwhelm-

ing community support, Oklahomans have embraced local breweries with gusto. Facebook pages like Freddy’s Craft Beer Gang and the Oklahoma Craft Beer Club (OCBC), and apps like Untappd provide consumer reviews, announcements about new and special releases, pint nights and tap takeovers. Craft beer enthusiasts are always looking for special releases and limited production beers and aren’t afraid to try something new - even a beer that is brewed with pizza or chocolate or pizza and chocolate while others stick to their new favorites that are available all year long. The beers listed below can be found at independent liquor stores and restaurants across Oklahoma.

DEAD ARMADILLO – TULSA

Dead Armadillo Craft Brewing Company and Taproom is in Tulsa.

Founder and brewmaster, Tony Peck, launched his brewery with “Amber” and still best-known ale with hints of toasted malt and a smooth finish. Look for the limited release, Oktoberfest – Dunkelweizen, a dark wheat ale brewed with a hefeweizen yeast. Taproom: 1004 East Fourth St., Tulsa

ELK VALLEY BREWING CO. – OKLAHOMA CITY John Elkins, owner, brewmaster and beer drinker, created his flagship beer “Magic Juice Double IPA,” a northeast style double IPA with Idaho 7, Mosaic and Comet hops. Juicy and hazy, with strong citrus and a subtle bitter heat. For those pumpkin spiced latte lovers, look for the super limited production “Pumpeon,” Imperial pumpkin ale aged in bourbon barrels with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and whole cloves. Taproom: 1210 N. You’re invited to the 2019 ARTworks Gallery Opening featuring Tulsa fiber artist Taylor Painter-Wolfe. The Holland Hall ARTworks program supports the school’s core belief that an appreciation for and experiences in the arts are essential. Each year during ARTworks, an acclaimed, professional artist is invited to exhibit on campus and spend a week as the artist-in-residence at Holland Hall. We invite you to join us as we celebrate the 2019 ARTworks artist, Taylor Painter-Wolfe. Taylor is a fiber artist from Tulsa who divides her time between creating and showing her work and teaching elementary art. She makes and dyes her own felted wool by hand, which she uses to design abstract landscapes inspired by aerial photography and satellite images. More information and tickets available at www.hollandhall.org/artworks.
