Letter from the Publisher THIS MONTH WE PRESENT OUR FASHION + STYLE ISSUE, ALONG WITH A CELEBRATION OF OUR TEN-YEAR ANNIVERSARY. Ten years sounds like a long time, but it feels like the events of ten years ago occurred only last week. If you’re anything like me, now and then you stop and you remember that you’re on a journey, the destination of which is inevitable. And so you focus on embracing what should matter most—faith, family, friends. Giving back in a meaningful way. But you also learn

to embrace yourself, which is when the magic happens. Today I stand on the hard-packed ground of adulthood: I’m closing in on my mid-40s. My mother says I’m “middle-aged” (shame on her)! Although “middle-age” and crow’s feet slowly rob me of my youth, I feel no different than when I was 25 with one profound exception: I know who I am. At 25, I watered myself down to please others. Almost 20 years later, following a host of life lessons, failures and heartaches, I finally understand the lesson my mother was attempting to instill when she danced around the kitchen in 1985 singing those famous words from Broadway production La Cage aux Folles: “Life’s not worth a damn ‘til you can say, ‘Hey world, I am what I am!’” Similarly, you know your style when you know who you are. Having your own style is about embracing your personal preferences without abandon and loving every second of it. No other person in this world has the same exact style as you, and that’s something to cele-

Happy 10 Years from the CEO HELLO LEAWOOD! This September issue marks the 10 year anniversary of Leawood Lifestyle and we’re so excited to celebrate with you! We’ve made many memories over the last 10 years with stories that have touched your hearts, businesses you’ve come to rely on and great friends you’ve made at our events. Leawood is home to some of the best people in the world. From entrepreneurs like Jeff Covitz, founder of Houndstooth Men’s Apparel; medical professionals like cardiologist Rhea Pimentel, who have made Kansas City a destination to get the best care possible; students like Will Gurley, who started the You Matter Music Festival to bring awareness to mental health and depression; and spectacular people like holocaust survivor Sonia Warshawski, who tells her inspirational story all over the world—we’re grateful to share these amazing stories. We’ve seen local heroes spotlighted as well. Having a great mother and father who raised 10 children, and a wife who is raising (as of now) three small children, I know personally that moms are some of those heroes. We have so many mothers and fathers that are local heroes that are doing amazing, unseen acts of heroism on a daily basis. We’ve also seen local first responders going above and beyond the call of duty, like Leawood Police Sergeant Jordan Couturier who, along with many others, goes above and beyond through his involvement with the Special Olympics and the Torch run. You’ve seen a new publisher leading the Leawood Lifestyle magazine: Jane Preuss. Jane lives in Leawood, has a beautiful family and has been an inspiration to so many people. She’s a bright light in Leawood and has such a passion for this community, talking to residents about who they want to see in the magazine and what continues to make this community unique. We’re happy she’ll continue to bring you a beautiful magazine each month. Here at Lifestyle Publications, we have seen a lot of growth in 10 years. We are helping to build more than 100 communities through our publications from the east coast to the west coast. Leawood is our first and our favorite. We’ve always taken pride in Leawood and will forever call it home. We’ve made many memories and have seen so many lives touched throughout the past 10 years. So we want to thank you, Leawood, for making this such a great city. We thank you for sharing these pages with us each month and pouring your hearts into this community—you’re truly some of my favorite people. It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years, but time goes by fast when you love what you do and spend it with people you love. Thanks for opening your doors to us—we’ll see you around town!

tips for incorporating color and pattern in your home + Use at least three patterns in a room and vary the scale. One large, one medium and small, or one large and two different mediums for instance. + Try to incorporate colors that are the same intensity. For example, don’t mix pastels with jewel tones. Different patterns often work together if they’re of the same hues. +

Distribute

patterns

evenly

throughout the room. If the majority are all on one side of the room, the whole space will look unbalanced. + Don’t place too many patterns on top of each other (break them up with solids). The eye needs a place to rest, and too many patterns will feel chaotic. + Patterns don’t have to be of different colors. Tone-on-tone patterns can still give the room depth and character while remaining elegant. + Decorating your home is not a life-or-death situation. Have fun with it!

AVERAGE IS UNACCEPTABLE THE KATHRYN THOMAS TEAM

REECENICHOLS REALTOR KATHRYN THOMAS AND HER 5-STAR TEAM IN LEAWOOD MEAN BUSINESS WHEN THEY SAY THAT AVERAGE IS UNACCEPTABLE. With their 24/7 on-call assistance during buying and selling, along with their enthusiastic outlook and reputation for having an intelligent grasp of technology, they’re determined to stay one step ahead of their clients’ needs. “We maximize a home’s exposure in the marketplace through a custom marketing plan, and we minimize clients’ stress by providing clear communication and acute attention to their needs,” Thomas says. “And for buyers, we show them a variety of properties across the metro, narrowing their search with them to find the home of their dreams.” As dual-licensed Realtors (in Kansas and Missouri), certified Accredited Buyers Representatives and Relocation Specialists, The Kathryn Thomas Team specializes in executive relocation, luxury markets, resale, new construction and condos/lofts. Thomas is regarded as a motivated, no-nonsense professional with strong negotiation skills and a welcoming and candid personality. Nearly 30 years ago, she emigrated from Basildon, England and has been a proud Kansas Citian ever since. After graduating from William Jewell College with a bachelor’s degree in business and emphasis in marketing specialties, Thomas obtained her real estate license in 2002 and found her niche. “Real estate is the only career I’ve had, and I’m fortunate to truly love it,” she says. “I value the relationships along the way and getting to know people on such a personal level.” Her success story is a study in determinism. With no close family in the states, Thomas singlehandedly jumpstarted her business. Seven years later in 2009, Thomas was voted into “Kansas City’s TOP 20 in their Twenties” by Ingram’s Magazine and named a FiveStar Agent by KCMagazine for 2006-2014. Thomas is quick to credit her team of four full-time selling agents, an office manager, and a client care manager. “I’m so proud of my team,” Thomas says. “We’re a well-oiled machine with a similar work ethic who support one another personally and professionally. We’re proud of our aggressive negotiation style that achieves the best price and terms for our clients. But we’re more than just agents. We’re also volunteering in the community and juggling our families and lives. I work with such a wonderful group and feel so blessed to go to work each day.” Thomas takes seriously everything in her life, including her passion for philanthropy: “We take so much for granted in life, and volunteering truly warms the soul.” Thomas volunteers weekly with hospice, and she and her team have been involved with the Ronald McDonald House, Trent Green Golf Classic Tournament, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Kauffman Scholar Program, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and Susan G. Komen Foundation. A typical day for Thomas starts with working out, checking in with her staff, answering calls/emails, and prioritizing her day based on contracts, closings, appraisals, inspections, appointments, etc. She laughs at the misnomer of keeping life in balance. RUNWAY OF EMPOWERMENTÂ

ARTICLE ADRIANE TAYLOR

[ fashion honors autism ]

GIVING BACK

JOSHUA BOLEN IS A VISIONARY. He is a man using his own life’s undertakings, ever-evolving knowledge of the autism spectrum, and passion for the importance of human connection to create rich experiences of authentic collaboration. He is in constant thought of ways to reach a community that is often underserved and does so through a completely limitless lens. For Bolen, it is his own personal journey that has made his foundation and work with Fashion Honors Autism even more meaningful. Growing up, school was a place where Bolen learned to develop the best coping mechanisms—ones that would mask his learning disabilities. He knew he wanted to be successful but could not understand why he could steadfastly study and still fail. Soon he was diagnosed with a speech impediment as well as learning difficulties that made it more challenging for him to grasp concepts. He was given a label that placed him in special education. It was this label that stunted his confidence which hindered his growth. During a time and within a culture where special education was shunned upon, Bolen felt he needed to isolate that part of his life in order to survive. “Most of my struggles were in going to school,” Bolen says. “No one really knew I had a learning disability because I hid that from all my friends. I would run to the class I needed to go in, and I would strategize every single day how I could get into this classroom without being seen. It was literally all I thought about.” It was through his persistence and the love and support from his family that he would graduate high school and continue his education post-graduation. However, once he became an adult, he chose to distance himself as far from special education as he could. He did not want to be a part of anything that had to do with educational struggle, and he denied himself the opportunity for some time. But, as Bolen would describe, “it was a God thing,” and destiny would instead carve another, more beautiful path. Many things fell into place once Bolen first decided to work with a young man who was on the spectrum. He realized he was able to connect with him in ways that others may not have been able. Over the years he watched him grow in confidence, and it sparked a renewed sense of purpose in Bolen’s life. He spearheaded Fit to Fly, a fitness program for kids on the spectrum, and through this was contacted by the Joshua Center, a non-profit organization that provides services for children and families with neurological impairments. Always the innovator, fashion-forward Bolen wanted to utilize his experience as a model with Exposure Model and Talent to help others, and he began to wonder what he could do next that would truly embody all he had hoped to accomplish. It was during a routine workout that a mentor would ignite the flame that would become Fashion Honors Autism. CONTINUED >

When the idea came to Bolen he was not immediately bogged down with the “how,” he just knew it had to “be.” He knew he wanted local youth with autism to be an essential part of the whole process. He knew that he wanted to partner kids with a model mentor who would guide them along the way, and he knew he wanted to showcase their partnership in the most celebratory of ways. He would dive in head-first and develop a non-profit that would put children in the center of spreading autism awareness in a fun and fulfilling way. It was through his personal experience that he was able to create a program that enables the model mentor to develop a trust and bond with their mentee. They then coach them how to walk, how to pose, and how to be confident in a photo shoot. And it all culminates when they walk the runway in their annual charity event. It is through our workshops and annual fundraiser, the black-tie charity fashion show, that we execute our mission: to partner with local fashion communities to empower youth living with autism spectrum disorder to live happier, healthier lives. Fashion Honors Autism Facebook It has been a true labor of love that provides families with a free invaluable experience. In three years, FHA has raised just under $3,000 with most expenses coming out of Bolen’s pocket. But he knows this is just the beginning, and no one is more excited to see where it goes from here. “Just to see each kid be able to come in, take on an opportunity like this, go through the process and own it, and then take what we teach them and put it toward their own needs. To me that’s like the coolest thing.” For sponsorship, volunteer opportunities, and donations, visit: fashionhonorsautism.com Facebook-Instagram-Twitter @fashionhonorsautism

ONE OF ANNA’S EARLIEST MEMORIES IS EMBROIDERING A HEART WITH HER MOM AND THEN MOVING ON TO ATTEMPTING TO MAKE DOLL CLOTHES. Sewing has always been a part of her life. With fabric, she always felt like there were endless possibilities. “I’ll always be grateful to my mother and grandmother for giving me the tools to be creative and for being a huge reason why I do what I’m doing now. I wouldn’t have the skills required to sew and design as I do currently without their guidance. To this day, I use bits and pieces from my late grandmother’s stash,” Vogel says. Vogel credits her father, a successful entrepreneur, with encouraging her to pursue her dreams. She believes she may not have had the confidence to dive into a real business without his support and belief in her. After the birth of her daughter in 2014, Vogel started working on little pieces for her baby and decided to take the plunge with her own label, GoldyBelle. Living and studying for a couple of years in Europe shaped a lot of Anna’s design sensibilities. She leans toward classic, timeless looks and updates them in ways that are both practical and contemporary. “I know the general shapes I like to use in kids’ clothing and enjoy the process of making samples. More often than not I end up tweaking and adjusting a rough pattern until it has the look I’m trying to achieve. Then my very talented pattern maker takes it and streamlines the look for production.” They started by making everything locally, but as they grew, they moved some of their production to Los Angeles. They soon found that it’s harder to keep a close eye on the process from beginning to end from afar. Although Vogel was generally happy with the production, there were often delays and problems she couldn’t address from such a distance. “Before producing in Los Angeles, I searched for local manufacturing. At that time, there was nothing. I am thrilled that we are now able to move everything we produce to local Kansas City businesses. It’s not only practical and much easier, but it fills me with so much local KC pride. That being said, I will always use any local help with seamstresses who like this kind of work that lets them stay at home if needed for unique small batch or heirloom-quality looks.” They often use vintage materials for these pieces and have so much fun working on these creative looks. Having both truly handmade pieces and local production is a dream come true for her. While Vogel loves creating the really unique and special looks, she’s been moving toward styles that are both more practical and pretty. She focuses on high quality from her local handmade seamstresses, which is immediately evident in GoldyBelle products. unique details that you won’t find elsewhere. Other ways that Vogel has made these pieces practical can be seen in one of her most popular pieces, the Heidi Dress which features leather details that snap off and on for easy laundering. “It’s a tremendous help to have my daughter, Clara, as my own little model to try designs on. In fact, because she isn’t really interested in “modeling” for me, it actually helps me to know when something is practical or not. One of our most popular designs, the Sophia dress, has been tested up and down by her which led to a few design changes over the years,” Vogel explains. “Clara is very independent and loves to dress herself, which led me to realize that a dress that is the same in both the front and back is truly helpful.” The Sophia dress has a design that has proven to be really popular, especially because this dress is suitable for playing at the park or going to church, and the little wearer can slip it on and look perfect with ease. “My hope is that when your daughter wears GoldyBelle, she is both comfortable and stands out a bit for her unique yet classic look,” Vogel says.

You can find out more about GoldyBelle at www.goldybelle.com, @goldybelle on Instagram, or on their official Facebook, GoldyBelle.

A collection of good coffee table books is essential. (Stop what you are doing now and buy Kansas City Houses 1885-1938 by Michael Kathrens and Bruce Mathews!) The florals are all made from bagged bundles Hoyt grabbed from Trader Joe’s, and if you feel daunted by the idea of arranging flowers, look to the produce section. He used fresh figs and apples to add some life to the looks (also, never underestimate the power of a supermarket orchid.) I love to feature art above a mantel, but many of us have our TVs taking the place of a treasured painting, and that is okay. Just keep in mind scale, consider purchasing a smart television that allows you to project art, or consider framing your television. Finally, have fun with these spaces. Think of them as silent calling cards telling your guests something about you. What kind of books do you like? What is your favorite thing? It doesn’t have to be permanent and should act as a conversation starter when entertaining.

ARTIST GARY WILKES HAS HIS PERSONAL FAVORITES. In his home studio, an easel faces personal portraits of Bruce Springsteen and Keith Urban. But Lady Gaga holds a special place in his heart, too. When Gaga visited the Sprint Center for her “Joanne” world tour in November 2017, Wilkes was in his ninth year of painting the portraits of visiting artists for the concert venue. Through his job at Acme Sign, Wilkes had been contracted to paint Sprint artists’ portraits for three years. He’d well-surpassed that original time frame, and Gaga’s portrait was to be his last. As was their usual arrangement, his respected mentor at Acme, Greg Price, provided a photo, copy and type style for inspiration. Wilkes rendered Gaga’s concert poster in acrylic, the thick-textured and richly-hued paint lending a three-dimensional feel to the portrait. The artist, satisfied with his work, felt like at least he’d gone out with a bang. But then Wilkes got a call from his daughter, saying that Gaga had posed on Instagram with his portrait. And the Grammy-award-winning singer went out of her way to share how much she’d appreciated the portrait, so much that the Sprint Center decided to retain Wilkes to continue the portraits. “Lady Gaga saved my Sprint career,” he says. “The entire time I was painting these, I was thinking that this would be my last one,” he says. “I paint each one like it’s my first and my last.” Today, the walls of the Sprint Center suites and backstage are lined with nearly 300 of Wilkes’ portraits, signed by both the painter and the recording artists. While the Sprint Center houses the largest body of his work, the brick walls and billboards of Kansas City have been Wilkes’ canvas since the late ‘70s. After high school, Wilkes took a job on the grounds crew at Kauffman Stadium. CONTINUED >

ARTIST’S PALETTE

(CON TI N U ED)

He was watering the grass when he saw a man painting a billboard in the outfield. He remembers it was an ad for Camel Cigarettes of a man scaling a mountain. “I said that’s what I want to do, that’s what I want to be,” Wilkes says. Wilkes got a job with Calvin Signs doing hand-lettering and mural work. Later, he interviewed at Gannett. His “interview” was to stay overnight and hand-paint a billboard. After he worked at Gannett for eight years, the paint shop closed as billboard ads increasingly became digital prints stretched across vinyl sheets. Wilkes moved to Acme Signs, where he painted murals and billboards and did commercial sculpture work for 24 years before his retirement in the summer of 2018. Now sleeping in is a perk, but “retirement” represents more of a shift than a cease of creativity for Wilkes. He sketches and paints every day alongside a hand-carved carousel horse at his home studio. Paintings by Norman Rockwell and John Singer Sargent are displayed nearby on a wall-length easel. Like the artists who inspire his work, Wilkes’ goal is to tell a story. His creative process begins with a photo. Sometimes it’s one captured by his wife, Rhonda, an artist in her own right who Wilkes describes as his second set of eyes. He’ll sketch the lines of the photo onto his canvas. Then comes the paint. Acrylic is blessedly forgiving. If Wilkes isn’t satisfied with part of the painting, he moves to a different part of the painting to work, then returns to the original 76

area once it’s dried to make any changes. Each painting is typically five to six layers. Wilkes describes his style as realistic impressionism. He diverges from clean lines with a splash of orange here, a tick of white there. Broad brushstrokes in the background create an abstract, bokeh-like effect. “When you walk up to a painting, and it hits you and you don’t know why, it stirs an emotion, then I’ve done my job,” Wilkes says. The art of portraiture may have come to him later in his first career, but it’s become a passion he’s carrying through into a second career as an independent artist. Wilkes’ figurative pieces are now on display at Kansas City-area galleries such as Leawood Fine Art Gallery and NAME. “I always keep an open mind,” he says. “I’ll always be learning. That’s the fun of it.”

PARTING THOUGHTS

From the Desk of Mayor Peggy Dunn IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO CONGRATULATE LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER STEVEN SCHOWENGERDT, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ANGELA BROOCKERD AND PUBLISHER JANE PREUSS ON THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF LEAWOOD LIFESTYLE. What an incredible milestone! Time seems to pass by more quickly each year, and looking back ten years ago offered an amazing array of accomplishments that have occurred during this timeframe. Leawood Lifestyle has been a valued partner throughout this period and has assisted in showcasing many reasons to celebrate. Ten years ago, the Great Recession was waning. Our new-urbanism development, Park Place, was filling up with new tenants being announced on nearly a monthly basis. Today, the final phase of Park Place is under construction and nearing completion. Fortunately, our economic development activity throughout the entire City has demonstrated strong growth during the past ten years enabling a diversified tax base. This, in turn, has led to bragging rights of maintaining a flat mill levy as well as a AAA bond rating for the entire time. The City of Leawood annually receives accolades and “Number One” rankings as being the “Best Place to Live” in Kansas. However, this past year, WalletHub did their annual evaluation of 1300 cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 across the country on 40 key metrics. These included economic vitality, quality of life, education, health and public safety. Leawood was ranked “Number One” not just in Kansas, but in the nation! While we’re very proud of our excellent public services and quality-of-life amenities, much of the credit for these recognitions should go to our amazing citizenry. Their willingness to give back with their time and talents is inspirational and allows me to boast of my ‘300-strong army’ of exceptionally dedicated volunteers. Leawood Lifestyle has featured many of these individuals and their activities over the years that have helped make Leawood a truly premier community. I want to extend my sincere best wishes to Lifestyle Publications during the next ten years of your journey. Thank you for your many efforts to shine a light on the City of Leawood as we continue on our own journey striving to keep “Growing with Distinction.” Mayor Peggy Dunn City of Leawood ARTICLE PEGGY DUNN | PHOTOGRAPHY PAUL VERSLUIS 82
