for what we want our future selves to be like and look like. We take a glance back at where we have been and what we have done, and we try to remember to extend ourselves grace. January is a time to cleanse, to start fresh and not dwell on who we were 12 months ago. So much change can happen in a year, so as we plan our future and commit to resolutions, we also leave some room to change our minds—to grow and be human. Here at Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle, we are so proud of the growth in our community through the last year and cannot wait to see what is coming for 2020. As new businesses open, old businesses expand, charities fundraise and we all turn one year older, we will continue to be right there to share your stories and celebrate your milestones. Happy New Year, Smryna Vinings. Thank you for being a part of our story.

INSPIRED BY

F i t n e s s, Nutrition, Acco u n ta b i l i t y WHEN DID YOUR CERTIFIED FITNESS COACHING CAREER BEGIN AND HOW? My love for fitness began as a really skinny freshman in high school researching strategies and implementing my own workouts. Around school people noticed my changes from 146 lbs. to 228lbs. at 8 % body fat in just 2 years. From then, I aspired to help others change their bodies as well. I graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University with a B.A. in Health and Exercise Science. Shortly after, I got my personal training certification through NASM. Following my football playing career with the New York Jets, I coached at James Madison University. We won the Division-1 FCS Nation Championship during my first year as a coach. The first player I coached got signed to the Washington Redskins. From there, I set out to combine my passion for coaching and fitness. WHAT ASPECTS OF YOUR PRIOR PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL CAREER INFLUENCED YOUR PERSONAL TRAINING METHODS? Repetition and consistency: when you do things right over and over, it leads to big plays and wins. The same is true for health and fitness, leading to major transformations for clients in how they look and feel. Both become their “normal.” WHAT CAN CLIENTS EXPECT TO ACHIEVE AT BUILT PHOENIX STRONG? WHAT SETS YOUR FITNESS PROGRAM APART FROM OTHERS? Clients can and should expect to achieve a permanent change in their health and fitness in a timely manner. This program is different because it sets you up to sustain your results forever. Many fads out there can help people reach their goals, but with temporary results

WellStar’s passion for people extends beyond its system and into the communities it serves. Before creating new programs and services, WellStar takes a moment to pause…and listen…to important voices in the neighborhoods and communities it serves to ensure its initiatives are meeting the communities’ needs. In addition to this new collaboration with local rotary clubs, WellStar is also fostering a love for reading in local schools through an Early Literacy Program spearheaded by Dr. Beckford, and in close collaboration with partners in the community. The program meets children where they are—in their classrooms—to help them build the skills they need for a happier, healthier life. [I] COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR GREATER ATLANTA

“WellStar is honored to be a partner in this program and to work closely with local rotary clubs to serve our communities in meaningful ways. We – as health leaders – know that promoting early age literacy and fostering a love for reading can have a tremendous impact on the health and well-being of children as they grow.” 18

BEGINNERS If you want to get into running but aren’t sure where to start, check out a couch-to-5K program to ease into it.

C A S UA L R U N N E R S Challenge yourself by switching up your running routine. Whether you’re changing your route or upping your distance, a new twist could give you a nice refresh.

ENTHUSIASTS Whether you’re into 10Ks or half marathons, consider signing up for a new race and decreasing your time.

When you feel like you’re in a rut with your workouts and just don’t feel motivated anymore, try something new and exciting! Rock climbing is a great way to introduce something different without it feeling like a workout.

01 C L I M B I N G GYM S Climbing gyms have been popping up everywhere as the sport becomes more mainstream + are a great option for those who prefer to be adventurous indoors.

02 B O U L D E R I N G Bouldering, great for developing power, is a type of rock climbing where the climber doesn’t use ropes or harnesses, generally done on a much smaller scale.
