BROADEN READING HORIZONS WITH “TEN TO TRY” The Pioneer Library System encourages readers to diversify their reading scope through the second edition of its “Ten to Try” initiative this fall. Readers are encouraged to experience 10 books from a variety of categories during Ten to Try, which runs through the end of the calendar year. Topics range from “author or illustrator of color” to “historical event in Oklahoma” to “new holiday or tradition.” Categories are made to be broad enough that there are books for readers of any age within each. Readers will receive a badge for their online profile for each category completed. While there are no plans for prizes for those who finish the series, the prize will come from added knowledge and perhaps a new genre of books to try. More information, including all of the categories, is available online at the library website, PioneerLibrarySystem.org.

4 FALL FURNACE TIPS Furnace tips from the pros at Norman Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing: 1. Keep all the vents open. Closing vents to certain rooms can harm the efficiency of the heater since it is designed to heat a certain amount of space. 2. Change or clean your air filter once a month. 3. Schedule a maintenance visit. Make sure your furnace is operating safely and efficiently. 4. Replace an older furnace. Newer furnaces are much safer, more efficient and have utility company rebates.

C AT S I L H O U E T T E - M O R E T I P S Rather than drawing the pattern freehand, you can do an image search for a cat silhouette, select a design you like, print and tape it to the pumpkin. Use a push pin or thumb tack to poke small holes around the entire design to transfer the image. You can adjust the size of the drill bit to make the stars larger or smaller, or you can alternate size around the pumpkin. Try to avoid any pattern as you drill, to replicate the night sky.

C R A Z Y FAC E P U M P K I N - M O R E T I P S To create this pumpkin, you will need a serrated knife, a drill with a ¾” wood boring bit, a small scraper and sandpaper. Teeth - Use the scraper to cut about ¼” off the front of each tooth. This gives the needed depth for it to appear that the tooth is inside the mouth. Use your sandpaper to finish shaping and smoothing each tooth. Eyes - To create the outer circle for the eyes, use the scraper to remove the pumpkin between the outer edge and where the inner circle will begin. Scrape down about ¼” to create depth for the eyes. Leave the edge of the inner circle intact to really make the eyes pop! You can adjust the location of the center of the eyes to make your pumpkin look silly, cross-eyed, etc. Use the sandpaper to smooth out the recessed portion of the eye, and any rough edges.

Pumpkin Time! VITAMIN A-RICH PUMPKIN BASIS FOR SO MANY DELICIOUS AUTUMN DISHES

26

Cleveland County Lifestyle | October 2020

“My grandmother clipped this pumpkin bread recipe from a magazine many, many years ago. it’s getting hard to read because it has pumpkin splatters on it and is well- worn and yellowed with age. She also had some scribbles on there because she dearly loved cinnamon and she always increased the cinnamon in her recipes. One of my early childhood memories is making this with my grandmother. It’s easy to make, and, in about an hour, you’ll have a house smelling of sweet autumn spices and two yummy loaves that transport you to ‘fall.’” As a bonus, Sharon, who raises and shows Maltese dogs, also shared a wholesome pumpkin-based recipe for Fido! With all of the recalls in the dog food industry, Sharon, along with some of her friends, worked with a doggy nutritionist to create a wholesome, home-cooked food with human-grade ingredients. Sharon, who raises and shows prize-winning Maltese dogs, has yet to find a pooch that doesn’t love at least one variation of this dish, which includes vitamin A-rich pumpkin.

18-HOLE GOLF COURSE, HIKING TRAILS, TWO LAKES, HOME-STYLE DINING AND MORE AWAIT VISITORS AT THIS GEM OF A PARK ARTICLE JIMMY DARDEN

30

Cleveland County Lifestyle | October 2020

THE MAGAZINE TEAM RECENTLY DECIDED TO MAKE A ROAD TRIP RIGHT HERE IN OUR GREAT STATE. We selected Roman Nose State Park, just 88 miles from our Cleveland County community. Roman Nose State Park, named after a Cheyenne chief, is one of the original seven Oklahoma state parks and a real gem. Set amidst a beautiful canyon, gypsum rock cliffs and three natural springs, recreational activities at this state park include an 18-hole golf course, hiking trails, two lakes, trout fishing in season, canoeing, paddle boats, mountain biking, horse stables and hayrides by reservation. Rentals include canoes, kayaks, paddleboats and mountain bikes. Swimming in the lakes is not allowed, but fishing and no-wake boating are welcome. As you can see from the pictures, we were focused on the golf and were not disappointed. The course is a distinctive canyon course featuring Bent Grass greens and Bermuda tees and fairways. Several of the holes feature 30- to 40-foot elevation changes from the playing area to adjoining canyons. One feature of the original Roman Nose Golf Course design that was a bit unusual was the absence of water, sand traps or bunkers. One sand trap is now included on the back nine of the course. The course is rated at 70.5, slightly above the par 70 standard. In addition, slope rating for the course is 123, an indication of the difficulty of the course, intentionally designed to be slightly more difficult than the average course at 113. The original nine-hole course was designed by Floyd Farley in the early 1960s, while Tripp Davis designed the expansion to 18 holes in the mid-1990s. To say the terrain is steep is an understatement at best. Tripp, a Norman resident and nationally acclaimed golf course architect, describes his experience designing the par 3- 17th hole. “When we were laying out the path from the tees to the 17th green, I had to switch back down some steep terrain into a canyon, and I slipped and grabbed at anything I could. I grabbed a cactus and got a barb in my left thumb I had to get a doctor to dig out,” said Tripp. Nevertheless, Tripp summed it all up as “a neat place more people need to see.” Tee times must be booked online.

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED) Entrance to Roman Nose State Park (PHOTOGRAPHY BOLD MULTIMEDIA)

For a truly memorable stay, book a night at the beautiful Roman Nose State Park Lodge. The 22-room lodge, originally constructed in 1956, has been completely renovated to reflect the natural landscape of the area. The reconstruction emphasizes the lodge’s original mid-century design, while beautifully updating the look to today’s modern standards. The newly decorated rooms feature large showers, comfy beds, contemporary furnishings and large flat-screen televisions. The lodge also features several conference rooms and Swadley’s Foggy Bottom Kitchen, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Making the short trip to Watonga to experience this state park is well worth the time invested, even if it’s just for a day and an outstanding meal and a chance to play a round of golf. You will have an incredible experience. But be sure to learn from Tripp and avoid the cactus on the 17th! For more information, visit travelok.com/state-parks/roman-nose-state-park.

(TheWinston.com) IN NORMAN. It’s a fun twist on the vintage mojito, which was first made famous by Ernest Hemingway during his time in Cuba. “Fruity, herbal and light, it’s the perfect late summer/early fall cocktail,” says The Winston general manager Rick Patino. Try making your own—or indulge in an expertly crafted cocktail in person at The Winston, 106 W. Main St., downtown Norman.

Blueberry Sage Mojito INGREDIENTS: + 2 oz. silver rum + 2 oz. blueberry syrup (recipe below) + 1 oz. fresh lime juice + 10 sage leaves + 3 oz. soda water DIRECTIONS: Combine rum, blueberry syrup, sage and lime juice in a shaker tin, with no ice. Shake well! Add soda water to the serving glass. Pour mixture over soda water. Add ice to fill the glass. Place one sage leaf as your garnish.
