Dr. Melissa Schwartz offers a comprehensive approach to patient care Dr. Melissa Schwartz, an OB/GYN with SLUCare Physician Group practicing at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, specializes in comprehensive care for women with gynecologic cancers and hereditary gynecologic cancer syndromes. Dr. Schwartz chose to go into this field because of a strong desire to help women in a vulnerable stage in their lives overcome their disease. Q Tell us about your approach to patients. A I understand that women have many roles, responsibilities and priorities in their lives. My goal is to provide the treatment that works best in each woman’s life with as little disruption as possible. I understand that each patient might have different needs so together we create a treatment plan. Our group of nurses, medical assistants, social workers, and other physicians provide a team-based approach to care ensuring all aspects of a woman’s well-being are addressed. Q What is the best thing about the work you do? A The relationships that I form with my patients and their families. The journey that we take together towards better health. Q Job responsibilities? A I help women with cancers of the reproductive tract navigate through their diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. I perform cancer staging surgeries, administer chemotherapy and other targeted treatments. In addition, I work closely with radiation oncologists to provide comprehensive care to the women I treat. I also perform complex gynecologic surgery on women without a cancer diagnosis and perform risk-reducing surgery on women with hereditary cancer syndromes.
Q Talk about your specialty. A Gynecologic oncology focuses on the care of women with cancers of the reproductive tract, including uterine, ovarian, cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers. In addition I treat women with an increased genetic risk for these types of cancers. It is dynamic specialty that is constantly advancing with regards to surgical techniques, chemotherapy, and targeted treatments for our patients. Q Tell us about the HPV vaccination and other ways to decrease cervical cancer risk. A The HPV vaccine protects against certain HPV strains that cause cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. All children are recommended to be vaccinated at age 11-12 years. One of the best ways to decrease risk of cervical cancer is to see your OB/GYN for annual well woman exams and age appropriate screening with pap smears. Q When not working, how do you spend your time? A I enjoy spending time outdoors with my husband, baby and dog. Q Life motto: A Be kind and have fun. Dr. Melissa Schwartz is an assistant professor of Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Her research interests include clinical trials and understanding tumor biology in order to provide targeted therapy.

meatless mondays MORE VEGGIES...BETTER FOR YOU AND FOR THE PLANET ARTICLE PAM WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTO BY BRADLEY ROACH
BY CUTTING OUT MEAT AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK, YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH AND THE HEALTH OF THE PLANET. In association with The Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health, Meatless Monday of The Monday Campaign teaches, encourages and provides healthy recipes so Americans can make healthier decisions which start on Monday. According to The Monday Campaign, Monday is the perfect day to make small positive changes, by committing to one meat-free meal a week. Going meatless doesn’t have to be difficult and while you might think you can only eat salad, the options are endless. Don’t let this overwhelm you as you explore adding raw fruits and vegetables to each meal. Start slowly and small. At first try adding more veggies and fruits to your meals, gradually making meat portions smaller. Pick any day and start here. Once you get excited about it, you can then add more meatless meals into your schedule. Cooking vegetarian is not an all or nothing decision. Keep it simple. The American Heart Association is a great resource suggesting that we move vegetables and fruits from supporting player to starring role. Seeking out high-fiber whole grains, legumes, unsalted nuts and lower fat and fat-free dairy foods tend to be high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. And people who eat less meat tend to consume fewer calories. Health benefits might be a reason for you to try Meatless Monday or Fish Wednesday. Studies indicate that when we eat more vegetable based meals, we can lower rates of obesity, dementia, arthritis, high blood pressure, and other serious medical conditions. Reducing meat can lead to improving health overall and preventing disease. Here are suggestions to incorporate meatless meals into your lifestyle. Re-create favorites and make them healthier. Try a salmon burger or a mushroom taco complete with Greek Seedz, Veggie Burger 12

yogurt and guacamole. In addition, going meatless can be as simple as removing meat from your favorite dishes and replacing with a vegetarian substitute. Remember to use spices—seasoning will make any meal more delicious and condiments such as pesto, salsa, hummus, harissa, tapenade used liberally can change any meal. Use an avocado on sandwiches instead of cheese or in smoothies. Roasted, baked and crisped veggies are delicious tossed with salt and pepper. Your freezer can be a treasure chest with frozen fruits, vegetables and plantbased burgers. Find favorite nut milk, and use coconut oil instead of butter. Whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa and bulgur offer variety and healthy alternatives. Make sure your pantry has plant-based snacks like popcorn, nuts, dried fruit, healthy (low sugar) granola and dark chocolate. Mix pasta with vegetables and beans. Try corn meal-based options such as polenta, polenta fries and cornbread. This recipe comes from Cara Moon Schloss of Seedz Café and Provisions where “food is love.” Cara says, “This is very close to our recipe that I have tried and loved.”
Veggie Burger INGREDIENTS + 15 oz Chickpeas + 3-4 cloves garlic + 1 roasted red pepper + 2 Tablespoons Tahini + 2 Tablespoons lemon Juice + Small handful chopped cilantro or parsley (your choice) + 2 Cups Chickpea flour + Add small amount of water if mixture is too stiff Yield 4-6 Burgers DIRECTIONS To Food Processor add Beans, Garlic, Roasted Red Pepper, Tahini, Lemon Juice, Salt and Pepper to taste. Pulse until almost smooth. Transfer to a bowl and add Chickpea Flour 1/2 cup at a time until patty consistency is reached. Mix in chopped herbs. Form Patties Cook as desired. colors with love ST. LOUIS IS A CITY THAT LOVES ITS ART AND IS GRACED WITH MANY TALENTED ARTISTS. One of them is the unique painter Jennifer Hayes. She’s been an artist her entire life, but in the last 12 years her distinctive paintings have catapulted her to a whole new level professionally.
Hayes was born in Kirkwood, growing up both there
“I always say I’m color obsessed and that’s a pretty true statement. If I’m not working in really bright bold colors, I feel

colors and I love layering colors in unusual ways or contrasting them on top of each other, colors that
don’t normally belong together,” says Hayes. “Most of my pieces are abstract paintings without a subject matter, and all about layers and color and texture,” she added. Hayes got her first real break being noticed while painting at a live event for renowned Chef Hubert Keller, the first guest chef in history to be invited to cook in the White House. “He was looking for artwork for his new restaurant SLeeK, inside Lumiere Casino, and chose to display my paintings on his restaurant walls,” says Hayes. “It was such a great honor.”

Her paintings would later grace the walls of his restaurants Fleur de Lys and Burger Bar in San Francisco and Fleur by Hubert Keller in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. “I do a lot of custom pieces and a lot of events where I get a chance to paint live.” Hayes added, “I really enjoy doing those pieces that progress in a spontaneous way and people get to enjoy watching my process.” Hayes currently lives and works out of her home studio in Webster Groves. She has two children ages 17 and 23. Their father who was her high school sweetheart and then husband, passed away unexpectedly in 2007. “Losing him was a huge very sad milestone for us, but we pulled through it and I was able to pick myself up by my bootstraps, and turn what I love to do into my career,” says Hayes. Hayes says St. Louis has been good to her, and she’s thankful for all the people who have embraced her work. “I have a lot of clients who commission me to do specific pieces for their spaces, and it’d be wonderful to do more for corporate spaces and interior designers and corporate spaces.” Her work can currently be seen in different locations including Four Seasons Hotel, St. Louis’ private airport JetLinx, and at the Brentwood Metro Lighting. Hayes says she’s grateful for the amazing opportunities that have come her way, and hopes to one day have a gallery space here where her clients can visit to see her work. “I think if you’re able to bring happiness to people’s lives, it feels like you made a difference with your time in the world.” For more information on Hayes work go to JenniferHayesSTL.com.

LOCALLY OWNED (CONTINUED)
This season, seven 30-foot-tall trees with root balls about 10 feet in diameter will make their Muny debut just in time for the first show. And the Muny has added a state-of-the-art soil support and irrigation system running through it to make sure the trees have room to grow. The Muny is also dedicated to “growing young talent.” As part of the capital campaign, The Muny recently announced the acquisition of a $10 million gift from the Crawford Taylor Foundation, which will help support The Muny’s Endowment Fund, but is also designated to specifically support The Muny’s education efforts. Currently with eight programs, The Crawford Taylor Education Initiative will provide unprecedented, hands-on instruction and mentoring for youth hoping to pursue a career on or offstage in musical theatre. With this gift, the initiative will aid in the development of new arts education opportunities while improving current programs under a single, cohesive framework. The Endowment Fund ensures a magnificent outdoor musical theatre experience for centuries to come. This fund supports education and community outreach, artistic innovation, production enhancement, facilities maintenance and improvement, and operational sustainability. The Muny’s exciting 2020 season includes the Muny’s Premier of Sweeney Todd, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, and the Midwest regional premiere of On Your Feet! The seven shows are: Chicago (June 15 – 21), Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins (June 24 – July 2), Sweeney Todd (July 6 – 12), Smokey Joe’s Cafe (July 14 – 20), The Sound of Music (July 23 – 29), On Your Feet! (August 1 – 7) and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (August 10 – 16). New season subscriptions will go on sale Monday, March 9 and single tickets will be available beginning Monday, May 11. You can purchase tickets at Muny.org or Metrotix.com.

possibility, I jumped at it. I knew this league was different. It became a no-brainer,” he says.
XFL is led by Vince McMahon, founder of the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.). “Less stall, more ball” is how XFL managers describe this version of football, because it’s a fast-paced game with fewer play stoppages. Add timing changes, commonsense rules changes, and five game-play innovations, and it’s showtime for this league. The St. Louis team was part of the league’s East Division. XFL leaders say they wanted the games to be affordable, professional football. Single game tickets start at $20. The league’s players say they are committed to being community leaders. Whether it’s player meet-and-greets, Q&As with the coach, or connecting with student athletes, XFL representatives appear motivated to share the love of football. Additionally, with the XFL’s Football Advisory Network (F.A.N.), football fans have opportunities to share feedback about the new league, helping to design the XFL fan experience and shape the game together.
