Montreal has so many festivals throughout the year that “there are probably some we don’t even know about,” says Anne-Louise Fortin, spokeswoman for MontrealTourism. The city made its mark on the world of festivals, when Expo ‘67, (considered the most successful World’s Fair of the 20th century,) was held there to celebrate Canada’s centennial, and transformed Montreal forever. Some of the original pavilions, such as the enormous United States metal-framedglobe, still stand on the island where the fair took place. Just a few of the 40-plus year-round events include summertime’s Montreal Completement Cirque https:// montrealcompletementcirque.com/en/ (celebrating the strong street circus history of Montreal, which launched the beloved Cirque du Soleil,) and the winter2019 MARKED THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF WHAT

Year round “Don’t misses” include: the Jean-Talon Market, a delightful covered produce, flower and more public market, established in 1933 in the city’s Little Italy neighborhood, Montreal-style bagels in the Mile End area, now home to a thriving Chassidic and Orthodox Jewish population, towering Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, a leisurely day in the spectacularly lush, forested Mont Royal Park, (designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also created New York’s Central Park,) and time exploring Old Montreal, with its beautiful cobblestone streets and buildings, homes, squares and churches dating back to the 1600’s. Take in the views from the Montreal Observation Wheel (Grande Roue) down at the Old Port, with its 60 meter high wheel, and 42 cabins, equipped with air conditioning and heat for all seasons. Or dine at Les Enfants Terribles, atop the Place Ville Marie, 607 feet high, with encompassing views and an observatory. For a down-to-earth experience, book a bicycle, scooter or segway tour, or engage a private or group guide. Various boat tours leave from the Old Port, such as the electric- powered Le Petit Navire. With the exchange rate in U.S. travelers’ favor (the Canadian dollar equaled just 75 cents U.S. dollar at time of publication,) tourists can take advantage of the city’s world-acclaimed cuisine and high-end shopping at very favorable prices. The Passeport MTL is a fabulous deal for tourists, providing free entrance for adults to 27 of the most popular attractions and museums around the city, as well as free unlimited public transportation. Little House Of Sound

SUSTAINABLE ENTERTAINMENT ARTICLE JAHNA EICHEL PHOTOGRAPHY ERIC SMITH

Birds Of Play

WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU COMBINE THE BEAUTIFUL OUTDOORS OF COLORADO AND LOCAL MUSICIANS? An audio-visual experience like no other. Crafting a audio visual experience using our natural landscape has been one of Eric Smith’s biggest missions when founding Little House Of Sound. “ I wanted this project to be a way that artists who are serious about their music could get some fun, unique, high quality promotional material and not have to spend a fortune. I set this business up as a non-profit and have been funded by grants, donations, and fundraisers. That way, the artist can focus on the song.” says Eric. Little House of Sound was founded in fall 2015. Eric wanted the chance to express his passion for recording music, but also marry that with his love of the outdoors. The idea came to begin shooting live video sessions

with a focus on high quality audio. The only constant in each session is Eric’s ‘82 VW Westfalia, which would be the “stage”, and the backdrop is ever changing. Eric wanted this project to be self-sufficient and solar powered so that they would be able to park in natural areas, parks, and farms. Since 2015 Little House of Sound has released around 45 sessions with a few currently in production. Each session contains anywhere from 2-5 songs. The majority of these artists are from Colorado, though some reached out while touring through the area. We love the “in the moment” performances Eric is able to capture, not only are full bands stripping down, and rearranging their songs to accommodate for an intimate performance, but they are often surrounded by the beauty that Colorado has to offer. Eric has a unique story to go along with each session. Whether it was a rainstorm that started no less than 10 seconds after we wrapped a session, capturing the perfect evening light to bring in an amazing Colorado sunset, or having to rally a few friends to help me push the van so he could pop the clutch and get it started (more than a few times). But the most memorable story he can remember (and will never forget) was in the Spring of 2018.

“A large group was gathered to head up to Pingree Park for a night of camping. In the morning, I would shoot a session just after sunrise. Probably about 4 cars full of people heading up at different times. I loaded up the van with all my recording gear, camera equipment, and food. More importantly, my wife, Genevieve, our son, Robin (who was only about 4 months old at the time), our good friend Chris and three dogs. It was a beautifully sunny day. We popped a tape in the cassette player, and commenced a gorgeous Sunday drive up the Poudre Canyon. About a mile past the Mishawaka, while in mid curve on a windy canyon road (right alongside a raging river), we felt a large jolt, followed by a copious amount or sparks in the rear-view. The van was out of control and we got it stopped safely on the side of the road, just seconds after hearing my wife yell “Oh my gosh! It just flew into the river!”. The item that landed in the river happened to be the entire rear passenger side wheel. No, we didn’t get a flat. No, we didn’t lose a rim. The ENTIRE wheel separated from the van and went cascading down into the mighty river. We waited for someone else from the group to drive by, and managed to contact someone to drive up and give me a tow back into Fort Collins. There was a few thousand dollars worth of damages, and I had to cancel a handful of sessions”- Eric told us. This story has a wonderful happy ending though, A few of his coworkers at Equinox Brewing organized a fundraiser to recoup some of that cost and get Little House of Sound back on the road to keep recording musicians. They organized to have performances by Cary Morin, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Mike Yob, and Eric’s wife, Genevieve! Deliberate Kin

24

Fort Collins Lifestyle | April 2020

The event was a massive heartwarming success that managed to raise just enough money to get the van fixed. The Fort Collins community is amazing in that way. “The point with all this is that recording music and shooting video outside is a wild ride. It can be at the same time exciting, stressful, disappointing, and ultimately a good practice in patience. Sometimes it’s too windy, sometimes it’s hard to find a safe/ comfortable location, sometimes it’s too cold, or too hot (equipment malfunctioning). However, I love being outside. I wouldn’t trade that aspect of what Little House of Sound is for anything. “ He concluded.

With the influence of impressionism and the Colorado landscape my style has become known as Colorado Impressionism. In developing my style I have found that using the palette knife has been best suited to paint the shapes of color and crisp clean edges to express how everything in Colorado feels like you can just reach out and grab it even if it is miles away. I want my paintings to feel as alive, vibrant, and exciting as the Colorado landscape is when I’m outdoors painting it on the spot or exploring the backcountry trails.” Carl said. Photo 4 Karen Storm “Expressing the essence of my subject …hopefully capturing the spirit of a moment in time ...that is my goal. Inspiration for my work rises out of my travels and my daily life in Colorado, conveying an intimacy I feel with nature. I often paint en plein air, immersing myself in the dance of shapes, colors and light of the landscape. Painting celebrates how the natural world touches my soul. Through my work, I hope to inspire others to take a moment to be astonished by this precious life!” - Karen Storm 30

must reschedule this year’s Governor’s Art Show. We have been working closely with our partner, the Loveland Museum, to come up with a schedule and we feel we have a good plan in place. We talked for a second of canceling this year’s show, but knowing that the Thompson Education Foundation (TEF) and the kids will need our donations more than ever before; we decided to reschedule the show instead. The dates we have chosen are September 26 through November 1 with the Gala being Friday, September 25. Above all else, the well-being of our artists, volunteers and patrons is our top priority as we join organizations around the world responding to the current global health challenge. BEEing mindful SMALL BUT IMPACTFUL WAYS TO HELP OUR BEES

BEES HAVE BEEN HAILED AS A KEYSTONE SPECIES FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT AS WELL AS OUR ECONOMY. In America they contribute an estimated $15 billion in value to the economy by providing pollination services for many of our crops, some of which are completely dependent on them, they provide the same service to many non-food plants as well, supporting the wellbeing of natural areas all around the country. For entrepreneur Devin Egger and his former business partner, the hype over bees and the social drive to protect them looked initially like a business opportunity. Their plan was to manufacture and sell hive boxes to people interested in helping support bee populations. Additionally they were planning to help local businesses acquire honey, acting as a broker between small producers and businesses that needed large amounts of honey for their projects. Egger, who was new to beekeeping at the time quickly came to realize that what many people who reached out for their services needed most was education. Not only on how best to care for their hives but how to create more bee-friendly environments on their property. “I didn’t feel good about them paying me as an educator or a mentor,” Egger says; who only began keeping bees in 2013, two years prior to this venture, and still counts himself as learning to this day. ARTICLE TYLER WESTON 32

Fort Collins Lifestyle | April 2020

With all of this in mind, Egger started up the non-profit Bee Mindful in 2015. His goal has been to help aspiring beekeepers with their first apiary experiences and promote bee friendly practices and behaviors in Colorado and, eventually, across the United States. Egger’s father is an entomologist, which exposed him to beekeeping practices while he was young, but he never delved in on a personal level until shortly after moving to Colorado. When he first began his beekeeping hobby Egger found the practice to be very therapeutic, a benefit he hopes to pass on to others. “This mindfulness training could change someone,” Egger says of the personal benefits he’s found through beekeeping. He also wants to pass on the knowledge he’s gained over his now seven years of experience, learning from both his failures and successes. Since establishing Bee Mindful, Egger has helped to establish what he estimates as between 30 and forty hives all along the Colorado front range. While he still helps people to set up new hives and works to house bees on farms and in public spaces, education and community outreach are on the forefront of Egger’s plan for the budding non-profit. Starting in summer of 2018 Egger began working with The Denver Waldorf School to help them establish hives and integrate beekeeping into their educational program. Ben Reynolds, a teacher at the school who recently took leadership over the initiative, says the move was made in anticipation of the 100 year anniversary of the first Waldorf school’s opening. “I was able to take a class on beekeeping through the Waldorf organization,” Reynolds explains, the school association has been working to integrate beekeeping and stewardship for the pollinators into their programs nationwide, beekeeping was one of the original tenets of the educational system. If we can “Bee” mindful there are ways to assist in correcting the course for declining bee populations. Choosing to not spray chemicals on your lawn is a big one. The clovers, dandelions and other wildflowers we count as weeds provide important natural food sources for bees of all types. If you must spray, it’s better to wait until after dusk when the bees return to their hives and the chemicals have more time to dissipate before they’re out again. You can also make sure to turn off your outdoor lights or use motion sensors, the light pollution can steer the bees off course on their way home in the evenings. One more thing you can do is to use a bird bath or shallow dish filled with rocks and water to create a bee-friendly watering station. The rocks are definitely important according to Egger, “bees hate getting their feet wet.” Just like us in our socks.
