ABSTRACT MIXED-MEDIA ARTIST SUSIE SILVER REMEMBERS NEEDING NOTHING BUT “SOME FRENCH FRIES AND A PAINTBRUSH,” SHE SAYS. Her love for art has continued ever since. Susie, a coach and educator who lives in Cary, received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Alfred University and has studied at Studio Arts International in Florence, Italy, and the famed Penland School of Crafts in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. She has also spent 16 years as the visual arts teacher at Cary High School. But even Susie faltered in her artistic journey for a period of time when she first became a teacher. She has since returned to her work with a renewed sense of self. Today, she strives to give people a moment away from all of their everyday noise. “I want people to take away a moment of something that is beautiful,” she says. FIG + THYME S PA R K L I N G LEMONADE + Thyme simple syrup + 1/2 cup sugar + 1/2 cup water + 1 bunch thyme + 2 fresh figs + 3/4 ounce lemon juice + 3/4 ounce thyme syrup + 3/4 ounce Sprite In a small saucepan, simmer sugar, water and thyme leaves over low heat for 5 minutes or until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let the thyme infuse into the syrup for at least 10 minutes. For the cocktail, muddle figs and
