Community is a Creative Process CREATIVITY AND DESIGN COME IN SO MANY DIFFERENT FORMS. It isn't ALL about the final product, but the process through which we come together as a team, a company, or a community. I find the most thrill and fulfillment in my work through the people I meet along the way. Our community has shifted, grown, transformed, gained, and lost over the years. It is important not to label what we have and who we are because every day we meet someone different or learn something new and that label dissolves. This community is rich in diversity, talent, progress, understanding, and knowledge, and if we let go of our preconceptions of what those things may bring, we see so much more. Neighbors that we didn't know begin to appear, businesses we've never visited open their doors, and our world expands. There is so much more to experience in this incredible community if we open up our eyes, our hearts, our minds and our creativity. It has been a gift to be part of such a wonderful team at Boulder Lifestyle. I have

THE COFFEE RIDE — ROASTED ETHICALLY GROWN COFFEE, DELIVERED BY BICYCLE We started out of a small garage here in Boulder in 2013. Our ride began sharing our coffee with co-workers to replace the dreaded “bad office coffee.” After seeing the positive impact we were making by sharing our home science experiment with others, we turned our passion for coffee roasting into a business, combining nostalgia for our grandfather, Jerry the milkman, our morning bicycle commute, and the love of giving people the permission to slow down and reflect on their favorhave a roasting facility in North Boulder where we

FRESH AIR FITNESS IN BOULDER Kondition is continuing to prove why they are Boulder's best boutique gym! Not only do they offer high-quality group fitness classes in a beautiful space, they have pivoted with every change these strange times have thrown their way. With the recent mask mandate, owner and Boulder native, Emma Straight, decided to move classes to their covered atrium to allow for more flexibility to work out without masks. Using innovative technology, like noise-canceling headphones (think, silent disco), Kondition is able to maintain the experience and energy that makes the studio workouts so amazing. Community has always been a focus for Kondition, and in these difficult times, it’s been great to have a bit of “normalcy” in your day. If you haven’t yet tried a class, mention seeing this and get your first class free. Kondition offers Cycle, Yoga, Barre, Strength and HIIT classes with a rotating daily schedule. @HELLOSALT

IN MOST CITIES, THE SIDEWALK DOUBLES AS A RUNWAY AS PEOPLE PRESENT THEIR STYLE THROUGH STREETWEAR. In Boulder, we spend more time in cycling shorts than ordinary clothes, making every ride an opportunity for self-expression. For designer Meghan Newlin, she wasn’t ready to settle for an off-the-rack kit that a dozen other cyclists might wear on a given day. So she customized her own. “I found myself making accessories, caps, arm warmers, etc. to complement my cycling kits,” Newlin says. “It not only made an outfit unique, but I could create multiple looks for one kit—athletic gear isn’t cheap.” That’s how Newlin created SALT, a boutique accessories brand of hand-built cycling caps, bandanas, and (now) face masks designed with high-fashion sensibility, yet gritty enough to wear sweat-drenched to a brewery. “The accessories provide self-expression, more color. You go on group rides and find you’re all wearing the same thing. Being someone who loves fashion as an outlet for self-expression, I thought ‘why can’t personal style come out in athletic clothing?’”

39

DIY (CONTINUED)

Taught to sew at an early age by her mother, Newlin went on to attend Parsons School of Design in NYC and still uses high-fashion runway shows as a source of inspiration. “I go straight to the runway and look at what designers are doing and get color forecasts every season,” she says. “My accessories go with most cycling apparel because these brands are also looking at next season’s colors and trends.” What patterns and fabrics are trending now? Chambray in brown, black, and blue, fabrics with metallic elements or flecks (get ready for an insanely cool metallic panther print from SALT), and—backed by popular demand—cat prints. SALT offers a collection of caps, bandanas, and face masks, so start making the road your runway.

Indigenous activist,” says Nikki Iyolo Sanchez. Sanchez knows the life of a minority and a displaced person having moved across the Americas, from El Salvador to Canada, while her parents fought against genocide and injustice. Compelled to dismantle the oppressive systems they faced, her work is centered around decolonization and environmental protection. At just 13-years-old she spoke at the Canadian United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and would go on to receive her master's degree in Indigenous Governance, produce a docu-series on VICELAND and become a TEDx speaker. She is presently getting her PH.D. in emerging visual media technology as it relates to Indigenous ontology and is a facilitator for anti-oppression training. “By expanding our scope of understanding and in the same objective—liberation for everyone and a livable planet,” Sanchez says. During these historical times across the country, it is crucial that we all take actionable steps towards fighting the inequalities that affect BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color).

LAY DOWN, BREATHE DEEP, GAZE AT THE CLOUDS, AND CHANNEL YOUR INNER JEFF SPICOLLI. If I am to reveal the splendor of paddle boarding on the Boulder Reservoir it feels akin to Frodo mentioning to Gandalf that he found this interesting ring. It is bright, it is shiny and it is precious. When the tsunami of COVID-19 arrived in Boulder we all searched for paths to safety. As the father of two exuberant young daughters (Georgia 12 & Lauren 7) our quest brought us to the 700 acre oasis of the Boulder Reservoir. Located minutes from downtown, it often gets placed in the Hidden Gems category within Boulders’ panoply of places to go. Once we met Shawn at Rocky Mountain Paddleboard though, we were hooked. We learned the lingo (FYI it’s referred to as SUP, Stand Up Paddleboarding), were given the insider spots (Dream Cove) and how best to soak a partner (wiggle board contests). It was all made easily accessible and accommodating by their gracious team. The bliss accompanied with shoving off from shore into a seascape of sailboats, Great Blue Herons, water skiers, and bald eagles, is a tonic like no other. It was not long before we made it our daily siesta like many others. Perhaps it is the solace of open space or the majestic vista of the Front Range reflected on the mirror of water that makes you forget for a while what the trouble is all about. The Zen of paddle boarding is that it is so versatile. For some it is a yoga mat, others a bed (I can attest to this) and for my daughters a floating trampoline. In these days which are fraught with nervousness and insecurity, health and safety are a priority, yet we have found it just as important to cultivate play and reap joy. The shelter of the Reservoir, with its soundtrack of summer breeze and gentle waves, has produced this joy and it is our playlist of the summer. When you step onto the paddle board it amplifies.

Israel’s style uses explosive color and an intimate frame to capture wild animals local to the Rocky Mountains. The moments she paints distill an eternal breath, where an animal stares back at you sharing its unique soul. Israel does not paint a lot of background, nor does she focus on the full body or paws. “I paint close and personal,” she says, “so close and personal you can almost grab them and kiss their nose as you would your dog.” This style of vivid animal portraiture was created by Israel and has grown to such popularity that other artists seek to imitate its effect. However, her work is impossible to recreate because it comes from the depth of her soul. “There was no plan for me to be this kind of artist. I went to school for interior design, but I love to see animals in as much color as possible. For me, this is my life’s work,” she says. Israel is wild like her subjects. A true artist who makes us want to quit our day-jobs and retreat to the mountains with nothing but a paint brush, sage, and a bottle of vodka (her evening treat). Her life and work inspire us to roam the uneven terrain of our spirits, devolving to that peaceful, unconditional animal we were all born to be.

Martha Maxwell was a 19th century hunter, taxidermist, and feminist. On her hunting trips, Martha often wore this “bloomer suit,” a three-piece outfit consisting of a cotton and linen jacket, knee length skirt, and bloomers.

Only the wealthiest people were able to afford their own horses and carriages. In Boulder, the Clynke family owned the Studebaker carriage and the team of horses to pull it.

While Colorado was not the first western state to grant suffrage, it was the first to do so by statewide referendum in 1893.

COMMUNITY I N V O LV E M E N T Preston adds that from the beginning of the new museum’s planning stage, the Boulder community was involved. The task force of staff, volunteers and local business leaders “sought the community’s input into what they wanted their museum to be, and they listened.” Through some of the highest quality educational outreach in the region, thousands of Boulder teachers, parents and children participate in and have access to quality programs and materials. “Our summer camps were very successful, both virtually and in person,” Zinn says. At its Comic Book Camp, campers had the unique opportunity to spend a week with professional comic book illustrator Dion Harris to produce their own illustrated comics. “We’re also reaching out to the blind by creating learning tools with a tactile sensation,” Zinn says. This project brings together Boulder middle school students and local artists who are blind to co-create tactile materials for visitors with visual impairment. The Museum has been offering its rooftop terrace space to some of Boulder’s yoga and dance instructors who have been displaced since the pandemic began. “During a time of so much uncertainty,” Preston says, “we want to serve as a community resource, a hub and a helping hand.”
