Many of these parties request specific attire, whether it’s black-tie formal or corresponds to a unique theme. This year’s annual fashion issue is focused on helping you find the perfect look for your next big event. The most glamorous of these fall fundraisers is the annual Key Event, hosted by the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty. Inside we offer a sneak peek at what two local philanthropists will be wearing to this highly anticipated celebration. For our annual fall fashion photo shoot, we used art as our inspiration. We worked with stylists from three local boutiques to find looks inspired by paintings and sculptures to transform our model into a walking work of art. West Chester resident

WHEN THE WORLD OF ART PROGRESSES, FASHION PROGRESSES WITH IT, TAKING BEAUTIFUL ELEMENTS FROM THE PAST AND SHOWCASING ORIGINAL IDEAS AND COMBINATIONS. Bright colors, striking poses and a few perfect high heels completed our looks at this year’s fall fashion photo shoot at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, where we let art and fashion meet to showcase bold trends. The Fitton Center for Creative Arts offers a wide variety of opportunities for locals to engage with the arts. The studios allow attendees to throw a pot on a spinning wheel, create mosaics or paint a canvas. The Fitton Center performing arts programs bring high-caliber concerts, musicals and films to the intimate black-box theater space. The many galleries on the first and second floors of the building are consistently getting new and diverse exhibitions and are free and open to the public. “Artists that get our attention are ones that show obvious skill and craftsmanship, but also communicate something in a new way,” says Cathy Mayhugh, Director of Exhibitions at the Fitton Center. “I think the strongest visual artwork makes us ask questions, causes a strong emotional reaction or triggers a personal story that we want to share with others.” The “Sign of the Times” exhibit featuring three female artists is currently on display through October 4. One of the exhibit’s artists, Jeanette May, pushes boundaries with her photographs, inviting the viewer to think about the past and the present through the lens of technology. Every article of clothing and accessory in these looks offers insight into where fashion has been, with classic and vintage elements, as well as where it is going, including the use of new and surprising fabrics that create eye-catching new sensations. Our model, Alison Shiver, is the residential sales and marketing manager and part of the fourth generation in her family’s business, Shiver Security Systems. In her personal life, she puts together a variety of looks, from bold, colorful evening wear to professional workwear. While she works extensively with her father, much of her fashion sense comes from experiences with her mother. “A lot of my fashion stemmed from my Mom,” says Alison. “We’ve always been shoppers. I still, to this day, can go in her closet and find something I want to borrow.” ARTWORK: Donor Wall entitled “Everything You Can Imagine is Real” by Edward Casagrande THE LOOK: Designer Items and More—Michael Kors dress, Akris jacket, silver chain earrings, Michael Kors heels. As Erik and Lori Murphy of Loveland were building their new home this year, they hired Closets by Design to create their two master closets as well as their daughter Mekenzie’s closet. While they met with and received quotes from many other companies, Closets by Design offered the best value and were able to achieve what they wanted. Erik is an avid Pinterest user, and Senior Design Consultant Bob Boberg took his ideas and brought them to life.
“I’ve wanted a pink closet since I was a little kid and now I have it!” says Mekenzie. Mekenzie picked the colors and the fabric for the seat in her closet and the “bubble” light fixture matches her bathroom. She also wanted a counter to display decorative items and to use for folding clothes. “Bob helped with a lot of finishing details that made a big difference. All around it was a great experience,” says Erik. The design process for these three closets took about 30

did business with us,” says Bob. “I was at the Murphys’ multiple times because I had to see that it was looking right, and to fix any problems that might arise.” Bob has over 40 years of design experience and has been with Closets by Design for more than 11 years, so he is able to draw on decades of experience to help families create their dream closets. “It’s a team effort at Closets by Design,” says Bob. “Our installation crews are not subcontractors, they’re in-house people. We carry million-dollar liability insurance and workers comp. We are in charge of the whole job which means that nobody is passing the buck.” Beyond the personalized service, they also have the largest in-house production facility in the greater Cincinnati area, the largest area showroom, modern equipment and the most designers of any company serving the area. Closets by Design also specializes in custom garages, home offices, entertainment centers and laundry rooms. “Anything the customer needs, we can design, manufacture and install,” says Bob. KEY EVENT
CELEBRATE THE ROARING 20’S WITH PANACHE AT THIS YEAR’S GALA TO BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF WEST CHESTER/LIBERTY
OUR TOWN’S MOST GLAMOROUS FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR IS JUST DAYS AWAY. Each year, The Key Event raises an average of $100,000 for the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty. Since 1999, the Community Foundation has been the primary resource for philanthropy in our townships. 100% of proceeds from The Key Event are reinvested into the community through grant awards. Meet two board members and get a sneak peek at the looks they’ll be wearing to this extravaganza. This year, attendees are encouraged to wear 1920’s-inspired black-tie attire. SALUTING THE JAZZ AGE Jeanne Brauns, chair of the Key Event and board member of the Community Foundation, sees the event as more than just great food from local chefs and delicious signature cocktails. “I meet a lot of people at the Key Event and get to reconnect with friends I haven’t seen in a long while,” says Jeanne. “You see people from every phase of your life. For me, it’s been people from all aspects of my time here in West Chester, from when your kids are little to now.” Outfit Details: With flapper attire from UniqueVintage.com, Jeanne also added an heirloom pearl necklace. Her hair and makeup are by Lunatic Fringe, who offer a discount for Key Event attendees. LunaticFringeSalon.com MOVIE-STAR STYLE Nick Enger, board member of the Community Foundation and Director of the Hoody Memorial Fund, sees great synergy in hosting a beloved event while simultaneously funding generous Community Grants. “It’s a gathering of the influential people from all over West Chester and Liberty Townships. The event group does an awesome job. It’s really a celebration,” says Nick. “It’s all about the local community—everything that is raised is staying local. What more could you want?” Outfit Details: Nick sports a timeless tuxedo from Folchi’s Tuxedos and Menswear at Liberty Center, who offer $80 off a complete tuxedo rental ensemble for attendees of The Key Event. 3 BASICS FOR EVERY WARDROBE AS THE AUTUMN MONTHS DRAW NEAR, IT IS TIME TO SHIFT INTO CLOTHING OPTIONS THAT KEEP US STYLISH AND WARM. Stocking up on a new wardrobe can feel daunting, but Sherry Armstead is here to help make it easier. Sherry is the owner of Symmetry Boutique and Gallery in Fairfield which represents 400 artists and offers American-made products. With her expertise and eye for fashion, Sherry has identified three must-have items for every wardrobe this fall. Her first item? A black tank dress. “Everybody has things in their closet that they can put under this to change it into a lot of different looks. It’s also year-round and can be sleeveless, or on cooler days you can wear long sleeves under it or put a jacket over it,” she states. Sherry’s second fall necessity is a short stitch jacket, which also pairs perfectly with a tank dress. “I really like the short, bolero-style jacket. It will go with jeans or pants in any other color, and it’s another item that can be worn in multiple seasons,” she says. Of course, every wardrobe needs accessories, which is why Sherry’s third item is a necklace, but not just any necklace. “My third piece is a convertible necklace that can work at different lengths. It has a cord that you can add or
SYMMETRY BOUTIQUE
detach to make it shorter or longer,” she explains.
1000 Symmes Rd., Fairfield
Each item is perfect for its versatility in style, as well as its adaptability to our ever-changing Ohio weather.
