What Time is It? Summertime! IT IS HEATING UP, HOUSTON. Time for all of your favorite summer activities, foods, and fashion. Goodbye, layers; hello, breezy dresses and sandals. And hello, poolside cocktails—am I right? At the time these articles were written, about 6-8 weeks before you receive this magazine in your mailbox, people are slowly beginning to emerge from quarantine.

There are still no sporting events, and restaurant capacity is still at 50%, but one thing remains the same - Houstonians helping fellow Houstonians. We are proud of how our community has come together over the last few months to help each other through hard times. Talking with Reagan Howard and learning about her and (soon-to-be husband) Alex Bregman's FEEDHOU campaign was so inspiring - we hope you feel inclined to help, as well! Just in time for the Fourth of July, we've got some great ideas on how to plan the perfect sunset picnic, and if you're worried about getting too hot this year, don't be. We have some refreshing cocktail ideas and travel-inspired book recommendations you can read poolside in the sun or curl up with in the shade.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

“Before COVID-19 happened, I didn’t know that one out of four children in Houston don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Howard. “When we volunteered at a distribution center to help deliver food and saw exactly where the meals were going, it made us want to work even harder. Our initial goal was $1 million, and it was incredible to see the outpouring of support,” said Howard. “When we surpassed that goal, we knew that we had to keep going - we couldn’t stop there. We wanted to create a community around

this cause, and any donation amount helps. Donating just $1 provides three meals, so if someone donates $25, it has a huge impact.” Bregman is no stranger to charity work. He founded Bregman Cares, a charity now managed by the couple that focuses on Autism, high school athletes, and first responders. Excited about the prospect of future charity work, Howard plans to incorporate their work with the Houston Food Bank into Bregman Cares. “It is amazing to see Alex’s platform as an athlete be used to do so much good,” said Howard. “I feel like it is a way to share our lives and what we are passionate about.” According to Howard, one of the best parts about embarking on the FEEDHOU project has been the time she and Bregman have spent together planning, executing, and watching their project come to life. The couple has also enjoyed all the extra time quarantine has given them. In a typical baseball season, they don’t see each other during the day and rarely had meals together. “To be able to spend so much quality time together has been amazing. The pandemic has forced both of us to slow down,” says Howard. “We get to have dinner together, which we never used to do – we’ve enjoyed all this extra time.”

The immediate future is a bit uncertain for Howard and Bregman. The couple who got engaged in January were hoping for an early December wedding until COVID-19 interrupted their plans. Despite an uncertain schedule, Howard still has her sights set on nuptials in 2020. “It has been kind of stressful and crazy to plan a wedding in the middle of a pandemic,” she says. “We want to get married this year, so we are going to try and make it work, but it is hard because we don’t know if there will be a season or when the offseason will be.” In the meantime, Howard, a Texas A&M grad with a background in marketing and technology, has plans to start her own business and simply enjoy her time with Bregman. Married or not, Houstonians should be excited to see what comes next for the power couple who have already had a significant impact on the Houston community. If you would like to donate to the Houston Food Bank, text FEEDHOU to the number 41444 or visit houstonfoodbank.org.

hungry’s serves up refreshing summer cocktails PERFECT FOR HOUSTON’S STEAMY SUMMERS, THE VERDITA COCKTAIL FROM HUNGRY’S.

WITH TWO LOCATIONS IN HOUSTON, ONE IN RICE VILLAGE AND THE OTHER ON MEMORIAL DRIVE, HUNGRY’S HAS BEEN A LOCAL FAVORITE FOR OVER 45 YEARS. The robust menu offers a global variety of made from scratch meals and healthy comfort food. For over four decades, Hungry's philosophy has focused on three things: freshness, flavor, and family. According to Executive Chef and owner Sue Nowamooz, one of the items that will always remain on the seasonally changing menu is the Hungry’s Kabob Plate. “The plate is a fan favorite, and it is perfect for any season, but the combination of grilled beef and chicken kabobs with turmeric roasted veggies taste like summer.” says Nowamooz. Hungry’s in Rice Village offers plenty of outdoor seating where guests can enjoy weekly lunch and dinner specials, brunch, or meals with the family. Aside from their fresh food, Hungry’s is also known for their delicious handcrafted cocktails and sizeable drink menu. Sit back and enjoy a drink al fresco or, if you are feeling inspired, take a little bit of Hungry’s home with you and make their summer inspired Verdita Martini.

HUNGRY’S VERDITA MARTINI Hydrate while you intoxicate with Hungry’s Verdita Martini. Fresh pressed green juice paired with your favorite spirit makes it the perfect refreshing summer cocktail. You can customize your green juice according to your taste buds, but Hungry’s mixologists prefer Persian cucumbers, fresh pineapple, jalapeno, and herbs from the garden. It tastes wonderful shaken with tequila. INGREDIENTS + (makes 1-2 martinis) + 6 Persian cucumbers + 2 pineapple spears + 1 cup cilantro + 1 cup mint + 1 jalapeño seeded + 4 oz tequila DIRECTIONS Combine the pineapple, cucumber, jalapeño, mint, and cilantro (to taste) in a blender; puree until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer, discarding the solids. Chill until serving. Pair the Verdita with 4 oz of good tequila and enjoy.

Travel guides are essential for pre-travel research, and are usually curated by people who have extensive experience in the location giving you a real sense of where to eat, sleep, and offer ideas about things to do. Non-fiction books are just as crucial to the travel experience; however, they can also spark your imagination about a location and give you an insight into places you have never been before. + 3 cups heavy cream, cold + 1/2 cup powdered sugar + 1 tsp. vanilla extract + Chocolate ice cream + Cookie crumbles, pre-made cake, chocolate candies, crushed graham crackers and anything else you want to layer your cake with

1. In a large bowl, beat heavy cream, sugar and vanilla with a hand mixer until stiff peaks form in the mixture. 2. Start with a thin layer of whipped cream on the bottom of a springform pan (determine the size by how large or small you want your icebox cake to be). Then top with an even layer of chocolate (or your favorite kind of ice cream). 3. For the next layer, top with an even layer of cookie crumbles, cake crumbles, chocolate candies, crushed graham crackers or anything else you want to layer your cake with. 4. Continue with layers of whipped cream, ice cream and toppings until you have reached the top of your pan. 5. Refrigerate at least 4 hours, top with more cookie crumbles or chocolate sauce, slice and enjoy!
