“People love it. They love the friendships, they love the volunteers, and they develop great bonds and learn teamwork,” she says. Brenda said there aren’t any disabilities that would preclude someone from taking part in the Nashville Dolphin’s programs. Participants include people in wheelchairs, those who are blind or deaf, and others with a variety of disabilities. Some have prior swimming skills while others are absolute beginners. They don’t have their own facility, their greatest challenge is finding pool space. Because of this, they do have a wait list, so unfortunately not everyone who wants to take part can do so. If they had more pool space, she said, they would be able to accept more people. “We have been trying to raise capital to build a pool, which would be life changing, but right now we are in many indoor pools throughout the community,” says Brenda. Some of these include the Gordon Jewish Community Center, Ensworth High School, the University School of Nashville, and the Centennial Sportsplex. “Wherever people will give us pool space, that’s where we go,” says Brenda. While their ultimate goal is to be able to build their own indoor pool facility, for now they would really like to get people off their wait lists and into the water. Swimming is what they’re all about. “It’s sad that we have so many people on our wait list. We are open to any size indoor pool,” she says. The Nashville Dolphins holds many fundraisers throughout the year. Their Boots and Bubbles fundraiser, which is a big crawfish boil, is usually held in May or June. This year, because of COVID-19, they had to get creative and do a drive-through event with live music and punch. It was a great success, and they ended up cooking over 2100 pounds of crawfish. They also hold a mum sale in September, and host an event called Soundwaves and Sweethearts every February. It’s a big party with a band, with liquor that is usually donated. Brenda said it’s a really fun event, and guests really enjoy themselves. 20

MANY MILITARY VETERANS HAVE A HARD TIME TRANSITIONING BACK INTO CIVILIAN LIFE. Suicide and divorce rates are high, and traditional therapies are not always successful when dealing with their unique issues.
Horses, she says, are flight animals. Their instinct is to check you out to see if you’re going to hurt them. “Our program is not about riding; it’s all about ground work,” says Jennifer. “Horses have 17 expressions, so it’s interesting to

Many times, she says, participants don’t realize they’re presenting with anger, or coldness, or acting threatening. “Horses are our mirrors, and with their 17 different expressions, they can show what they think of us pretty easily,” says Jennifer. “God was in a good mood when he made a horse.”

experienced at the farm and how they can take that home to their families and friends and to their work environment. If requested, they also will work in concert with certified counselors in more traditional therapies. Hillenglade Hope & Healing also offers an Empowerment Transition Program. This program provides veterans a place to stay on the farm for three to six months, while they work through their issues. During this time, they work on the farm daily with the horses and learn how to care for them. Once they graduate, they can then get a job in the equine world. Jennifer would like to expand Hillenglade’s offerings, but it’s been very difficult lately for many 501(c)(3) organizations. Because all of their programs are free for the veterans, first responders and their families, their financial needs are great. “We’re just hoping that people recognize the importance of this program and help us to keep doing this,” she says. “These days, there’s a lot of need everywhere, but this is not frivolous. This is lifesaving.” To donate, visit online at Hillenglade.org. They also need hardworking volunteers who are willing to groom horses, clean stalls, paint fences and prepare for events. 40

The Chrisleys FEELING LIKE ONE BIG FAMILY ARTICLE JENNIFER KAUFMAN PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEY HYLBERT THERE’S NOT VERY MUCH ON TELEVISION THAT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME QUITE LIKE REALITY TV SHOWS. No matter what’s happening in the world, people love to watch other “real people” on screens. Sure, we enjoy watching scripted and fiction shows, Netflix and Disney Plus, but there’s just something extremely addictive about binge-watching into the widows of others lives. Admittedly, it’s hard to be sure if these shows are actually unscripted, but they’re fun to watch all the same. Loving and funny, outspoken and heartwarming, often dysfunctional and always relatable. BMW X5 CONFIDENCE, POWER, LUXURY AND PET APPROVED, TOO
ARTICLE JENNIFER DOWNS | PHOTOGRAPHY JOSH VAUGHN 56
Brentwood Lifestyle | August 2020
WHILE YOU MAY BE FAMILIAR WITH THE HIGH PERFORMANCE OF THE BMW X5, DID YOU KNOW THIS SPORT ACTIVITY VEHICLE ALSO IS SAFE, KID FRIENDLY AND A GREAT VEHICLE IN WHICH TO TOTE FURRY FRIENDS? Our Brentwood Lifestyle team had the opportunity to take an X5 from BMW of Nashville for a spin, and we couldn’t wait to share details about that pleasant, fun experience. Our pups had plenty of room to spread out in the X5, which is equipped with up to 72.3 cubic feet of cargo space – easily accessed by the standard power split tailgate. When toting around a whole family, one is not only riding in a luxury automobile, but also a very reliable vehicle. The X5 received Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+. Three forward-facing child seats fit nicely across the second-row seats. The ISOFix pin on the two outer seats are easy to connect to, and the seat base is deep and wide, making it easy to install three seats. One of our favorite features is the ability to control the volume by turning your finger to the left for down and right for up. This also worked for the parking sensor volume, which is a wonderful feature. The camera image quality is fantastic, and there are a few angles from which to look, making it helpful for parking. Here comes the sun... The X5’s panoramic moonroof is fully automatic, and has a two-piece glass panel, power slide and lift control, wind deflector and power interior sunshade. For those feeling a bit stiff from a workout, sitting in an office, or a long-distance drive, the massage seat option comes to the rescue as subtle and soothing. 855.838.7142 BMWofNashville.com

LET’S TALK RE AL ESTAT E Dear Brentwood community, The pandemic has made many of us realize what we like and dislike about our current living situation. Whether it’s the location, the amenities or the functionality, the way we live is evolving to a new normal. Our homes have never been more important to our daily lives. Our real estate market is currently strong to stable and the last several houses we have SOLD had multiple offers and sold for over list price. Mortgage rates are at historic lows, and all indications are they will remain this way for the next year or longer. There is a shortage of active inventory and a surplus of active buyers. So now is a great time to sell. If you are looking to buy, it is imperative to have an experienced team of agents representing your best interest!! My team of professionals are flexible and sensitive to the wide range of interactions during this uncertain time. We take your health and safety very seriously when showing properties, and we know about houses before they ever hit the public market. Brentwood is a city with so many attractive attributes, from our school systems, to our local government, police and fire, shops and restaurants. We are blessed to live, work, and serve our Brentwood community. Please give me a call today!

When all the nets are raised an area almost as large as a full-size diamond emerges. Besides Joey, Josh Ethridge assists with hitting instruction. Will Haney, who played catcher at the University of Alabama recently joined the staff, as did Jordan Rodgers, a middle-infielder who played college ball at the University of Tennessee before being drafted by the Atlanta Braves organization. Rounding out the staff is former Virginia Tech standout and softball instructor Kat Banks. Kayla Sowinski also works with baseball and softball athletes as the strength and conditioning instructor. One special feature at The Hit Lab is a dedicated HitTrax tunnel. This gives hitters, pitchers, and catchers advanced analytics and statistics for improving their swing and throwing technique. “We measure everything and we don’t guess on anything,” Lewis explains when describing their instruction philosophy. “Most of our kids come in with lots of information so they’re accustomed to receiving detailed information.” For example, catchers can improve their throw angle and “pop,” or release time for controlling base runners, while pitchers work on their velocity and plate placement. Hitters work on everything needed for a successful swing like impact point and launch angle. All of this is done with advanced, computer-generated video and analytics. Joey reinforces that player safety is paramount at every level: “Our goal is to make sure every athlete receives the finest individualized instruction possible, whether it’s hitting, throwing or conditioning. At the same time, we want to protect our athletes and make certain they don’t injure themselves by overtraining or playing too much. Working with players, coaches and parents helps us achieve that objective.” Joey Lewis

ENCLOSED OR OPEN? Darryl and Linde Myers agree. As second-generation owners of the company, Mr. Enclosure, they’ve witnessed how much happiness new sunrooms and outdoor living spaces prompt. Since 1962, Mr. Enclosure has been designing, manufacturing and installing all-season sunrooms, three-season rooms, screen rooms, louvered roof systems and outside kitchens or outdoor living spaces -- making backyard dreams come true. Their products are custom-designed to fit the desires, budget and lifestyle of clients. “My father, Jim Myers, started in the business in 1955, and expanded it to include sunrooms and screened-in rooms in 1962,” shares Darryl. “For my family, it’s been an extreme pleasure to work around each other. I was fortunate enough to not only work with my father for 25 years, but also my father-in-law for 25 years. My wife, daughter and nephew have all been part of the business from 1997 on.” Carrying on the family legacy was important to the Myers after patriarch Jim retired in 1989. Through concerted advertising efforts, Darryl says they tripled their business volume in the following two years. Darryl says because many people weren’t able to go to their work sites or travel this year due to COVID-19, circumstances brought a different perspective to home family values and stay-cations. “More people than not are fully enjoying the home quarantine. However, they need a little bit more living space. So, they have decided to improve their homes and expand their outdoor living areas,” he says. Outdoor pavilions with kitchens really skyrocketed this year, says Jerry Vanis, Mr. Enclosure manufacturing coordinator. “Our No. 1 seller has been the Equinox Louvered Roof System, an operable pergola that opens and closes, with the touch of a remote, to control the sunlight or shade. It’s waterproof when closed,” says Stacey Benson, Mr. Enclosure sales team manager. 64

FUN PAPER CRAFT PROJECTS FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)
PIÑLLAMA
3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

Fold the circles in half and glue them all together back-to-back to create a sphere that looks like an accordion. 3. Glue the beak and white stripe to the neck, then glue the neck to a flat side of your inner-most circle. 4. Add the legs, a black dot for an eye and pink feathers for the ultimate flamin-goal.

SOMEDAY BUT WERE NOT ACTIVELY LOOKING. Both Becky and Cheston are Williamson County residents. Cheston had traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for work and saw the original location of Peace Love and Little Donuts. The sign outside advertising maple bacon donuts drew him in. After seeing the concept and trying the donuts, he immediately thought: “This would do great where we live.” “The nostalgia of getting donuts before church and with my family,” says Becky, “plus that there are not any good donut places in the area was another factor in deciding to pursue opening Peace Love and Little Donuts.” Peace Love and Little Donuts makes 36 different varieties of flavors from “Groovy” (powdered, sugar, cinnamon) to “Far-Out” (raspberry, vanilla, chocolate, banana) and finally “Funkadelic” (apple pie, cinnamon roll, s’mores, fruity pebbles). Cheston is a software engineer, and Becky is a registered dietitian. Someone may be thinking, wow, a dietitian owns a donut place. “Yes I do,” says Becky, “and I believe that ALL foods fit.”
