Loads of Gratitude and Tons of Cheer I LOVE DECEMBER BECAUSE IT'S NOT ONLY A GREAT TIME TO REFLECT ON THE PAST 11 MONTHS BUT ALSO TO CELEBRATE THEM. In this issue of South Dayton Lifestyle, we’re focused primarily on the latter! The holiday season is such a special one, and we have included articles that touch on various new ways to embrace it.

We had a blast searching for—and even creating our own—unique wreaths to share with you as an alternative to the same old traditional ones you may be tired of dusting off each year. We also hear from ballerina and Springboro High senior, Maddy Hoy, on her amazing journey as a dancer and her favorite local South Dayton Christmas traditions that you may want to start with your own family. We’ve even scoped out a number of locally-found gift ideas for family and friends (even the furry ones!) to help with your shopping. Hosting a special holiday event this month? We’ve got a cocktail for that!

My wish for you this season is to have a safe and fun holiday, filled with loads of gratitude and tons of cheer. At the end of the day (or year, in this case), it’s all we can strive for, isn’t it?! Thank you for everything, 2019; here’s to all the opportunities of 2020! Till next month,

LOCAL LIMELIGHT DANCE IS SOMETHING I LEARNED BEFORE WRITING AND BASIC SPEAKING. I was taught how to express myself before I even knew what my emotions meant. Ever since I started my training I have learned things about myself because of the strict attitude of ballet and expressive motions of modern. My teachers have been able to change my child motor skills into what I know today as dance. When my movements became a reflection of my thoughts, I became a dancer, and that is what has changed my life. Dance has also given me a second family. Spending more than 15 hours a week together, there’s no excuse not to be close. I have made the most amazing friends from dance who always encourage me to be better. The dancer I am today has been molded by the hands of my teachers. They were able to turn my twirls into pirouettes and my leaps into saute de chats. Not only did they teach me how to dance, but they shaped my personality by teaching me patience and respect. Although I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t dancing, my life is better with it. The study of dance has impacted all aspects of my life positively. It has taught me determination and expanded my creativity. Dance has presented me with so many amazing opportunities that I will always be grateful for. What started as a way for my mom to have some peace and quiet for 45 minutes, has become my passion, and made me

into the person I am today. In addition to my involvement in South Dayton’s School of Dance’s production of The Nutcracker every year, these are a few of my favorite Christmas traditions in the South Dayton area. Enjoy, and have a wonderful season! Maddy Hoy is a senior at Springboro High School and has danced with South Dayton School of Dance for 14 years. This year, she will play the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in the School’s production of The Nutcracker, showing at the Dayton Convention Center. RENOVATE & REFINE
Modern Wreath Alternatives DECK THE HALLS WITH SOMETHING DIFFERENT THIS YEAR!

South Dayton Lifestyle | December 2019
LONG GONE ARE THE DAYS WHERE A WREATH HAD TO SIMPLY BE “TRADITIONAL.” Today, wreaths literally come in all shapes, sizes, colors and textures that fit each individual homeowner’s style and budget. A wreath’s character may even provide a sneak peek into the personality and architectural preferences of its owners. It is easy to replace a wreath and give a front door or indoor space a whole new look, without much cost or effort. They may vary by holiday, stage of life, or truly by season, and can create a wow factor giving a lot of bang for a surprisingly little buck. So the next time you are looking to switch out a wreath, don’t be afraid to think outside the box and choose something uncommon and unexpected.

A WREATH’S CHARACTER MAY EVEN PROVIDE A SNEAK PEEK INTO THE PERSONALITY AND ARCHITECTURAL PREFERENCES OF ITS OWNERS.
+ Rustic and modern + Easy to DIY for a personal touch Less can sometimes be truly more. These minimalist wreaths provide a big impression without a lot of fluff and excess. They were also completely DIY for those who love to craft or prefer to put a more personal spin on design. We made these minimalist wreaths by using metal floral hoops, coiled garland, and twine. They are delicate from the thin hoop and classic with the greenery, pinecones and berries. It provides a comforting feel of the season, complete with personality and a slightly rustic charm. Metallic + Glitzy and glamorous + Fun way to be both bold and traditional A sparkly, vibrant pair of earrings can complete any look and make a bold statement. In the same way, a metallic wreath can shine brightly on a front door and bring the whole design together. For those who prefer a flashier option, a metallic wreath may be a creative way to be both exciting and traditional at the same time. This metallic wreath takes a traditional and favorited magnolia leaf wreath and gives it new life with a little glitz and glamour.

Textured + Unique and unpredictable + Neutral shades can still give a classic and elegant feel
Who says wreaths have to be boring—or even made of greenery and foliage? Think feathers and fur, and all things textured and unpredictable the next time you are decorating. When selecting a textured wreath, a classic and elegant feel can still be established if the shades remain neutral. These feather wreath and fur wreaths challenge the norm, yet they still look traditional and provide that welcoming warmth.

W I NTER’S R E VEL YOUR GUIDE TO A SIMPLE AND STYLIZED NEW YEAR’S SOIRÉE
FOLLOWING CLOSELY ON THE COATTAILS OF AUTUMNAL AND WINTER HOLIDAYS, THE NEW YEAR CAN OFTEN BE OVERLOOKED DUE TO AN UNDERSTANDABLE DESIRE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE SEASON. But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences of the previous 12 months with a simple end-of-theyear gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.

THE D ECOR There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

THE SNACKS
Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation.
30
South Dayton Lifestyle | December 2019
Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Add any additional bites you’d like and enjoy!
