moving back to our “normal” way of life. However, I hope we hold onto some of the good that is coming out of such a challenging time and, indeed, for those who lost loved ones, a tragic one. Things like spending more time together as a family building puzzles, riding bikes, sharing family recipes and generally speaking – SLOWING DOWN should be part of the “New Normal” that we carry forward. That’s not easy for a fast paced, goal-oriented group of folks who are connected in about 5 million ways and have “To Do” lists that stretch into 2025. But, it’s a goal that ought to go to the top of the list. Let’s make that our challenge along with this simple sentiment – Be Kind, Help Others, Give Thanks & Pray.

AREA BUSINESSES SHINE IN WAKE OF CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

MANY LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES REACHED OUT TO OTHERS DURING THE DEVASTATING CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK. Now, more than ever, it’s important to return the favor and support area businesses. This month we spotlight some of our local businessmen and women who recently went above and beyond to serve their customers and community.

In addition, the Primrose team created a pop-up pantry and invited teachers to take food and household items at no cost to them. Parents and community members generously donated items for the pop-up pantry to show their appreciation. Teachers work long hours and often cannot grocery shop during hours when the shelves are better stocked.

Highland Village Fit Body Boot Camp

During the Coronavirus outbreak, Les Nasche’s clients were unable to attend regular sessions at Highland Village Fit Body Boot Camp, but they still maintained their workouts and a vital sense of community. Through the VirtualHero Challenge, VIP members were able to participate in online workouts and a fun “Sweaty Selfie” competition. The winners of the challenge were awarded an Amazon gift card and a roll of toilet paper. “This online program has been so popular that our members wanted their family and friends to be able to join too!” Les says. The Highland Village gym partnered with Fit Body Corporate to offer a 21-Day Stronger Together Challenge for all Fit Body Boot Campers. The program included a daily workout, motivational videos and guidance from registered dieticians to keep participants on track and optimistic while stuck at home.

CULINARY CREATIONS

M e e M e e ' s Po u n d Ca k e EDITORIAL COORDINATOR STEPHANIE HASBROUCK SHARES HER MOTHER'S CLASSIC RECIPE

MY MOTHER HAS LIVED IN THE SAME HOUSE FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS. When I was a child, golden cabinets lined our kitchen walls, and happy yellow-and-red floral curtains hung above the kitchen window. (What can I say - it was the 70s.) Every special occasion, my mom, sister and I would gather in the kitchen to bake. A favorite of ours was mom’s famous crusty, buttery poundcake. When I got married, my mother gifted me a small tin recipe box with all of her favorite recipes in it, including her poundcake recipe. She also made the happy yellow-and-red floral curtains

P N I G N R I S I FIVE WOMEN MAKING AN IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY OFFER THEIR BEST ADVICE

AMY FERDINANDO DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER FOR DENTON COUNTY As Director of Development of the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County, Amy Ferdinando fights on behalf of children throughout the county. “My role is to offer the community the opportunity to make significant changes in the life of a child,” she says. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? “You can never be overdressed, but you can always be underdressed. My mother’s friend, Barbara Ashley told me that when I was 8 years old, and I will never forget it.” IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND OFFER A PIECE OF ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “I would tell myself to let things play out more. I ask my staff all the time, ‘Do you want to die on this hill?’ when we are faced with a tough situation to get them to think if this is something we want to charge forward on or let play out for a minute and see what happens.” WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER YOUNG WOMEN OF TODAY? “You deserve a seat at the table. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

DONNA HERNANDE Z ATTORNEY, LAW OFFICE OF DONNA HERNANDEZ Donna Hernandez moved to Flower Mound in 1993 – before there was even a grocery store in town – and opened her law practice. “After 35 years in the legal profession, I’ve learned a lot about people and what is important in life,” she says. Donna has served on several local nonprofit boards and currently is on the Cloud 9 Charities Board and is incoming president of the Cross Timbers Rotary Club. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? “When I was a young lawyer, I had a managing partner tell me to do what I know, not what I don’t know. It has served me well and constantly reminds me that we should all play up our strengths, admit what we don’t know and not try to be everything to everyone or have all the answers.” IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND OFFER A PIECE OF ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “I would tell my younger self to think less about how other people see you. Instead, be the person you want to be, not who others expect you to be. Judge less and be judged less.” WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER YOUNG WOMEN OF TODAY? “Open your mind to new ways of thinking and to new experiences. We often use these words when we are exaggerating something or defending ourselves.” IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND OFFER A PIECE OF ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “I would love to tell my younger self that life isn’t supposed to be scripted. After losing her 18-year-old son, Brett, to an accidental drug overdose in 2010, Kathy O’Keefe turned her grief into action. “That changed my life, and God changed my career to help other families learn, understand and heal from the damage that substance use has on the family,” she says WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? “The best advice I have ever received was to slow down. However, I did not understand how much that meant until we lost Brett. Now, I am much more present. When I am somewhere, I try to be there 100%. I am not always successful, but I try.” IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND OFFER A PIECE OF ADVICE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “It would be the same: ‘Slow down and focus on important things.’ We tend to make our family more flexible so we can accomplish other obligations. We all have to have a better understanding of the word ‘no.’ That two-letter word empowers people like nothing else can.” WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER YOUNG WOMEN OF TODAY? “Learn to love and appreciate you. Look in the mirror and smile at the beauty that is reflected back. When you do, everything else falls in place. You are important, you are special and you are enough. It is not just about saying it, it is about believing it as well.”

TO P R AY VANESSA VAN TREASE'S PRAYER/ WARRIOR ROOM IS HER FAVORITE PLACE TO RETREAT

WHEN VANESSA VAN TREASE’S HUSBAND DESIGNED HER FAMILY’S DREAM HOME, VANESSA HAD ONE REQUEST – THAT HE BUILD HER A PRAYER ROOM. In the past, Vanessa had utilized a closet in her home as the special space she refers to as her prayer/warrior room. “It was the one place I could go and not be interrupted,” she says. Vanessa now has a lovely, dedicated room overlooking her garden, where she can sit with God for awhile each day. “In the morning I face the rising sun as I take in the beauty of God’s creation. This breathtaking view allows me to reset my mind, focus on God’s promises and pray for the needs heavy on my heart,” she says. “My faith is very important to me and my family. This place of peace has done so much for my heart, mind and soul. Having a space to pray, journal and study God’s word without distractions is perfection to me.” Vanessa Van Trease is the owner of Chateau Realty in Grapevine. 26

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

on your windowsill. There are several factors to keep in mind when you first start your container garden, the first of which being to decide whether you’re going to keep it indoors or out. Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a win-
