ARTICLE LORA POWELL, OWNER SALON BLONDE PHOTOGRAPHY LORA POWELL
IF THIS YEAR HAS TAUGHT US ANYTHING, IT IS THAT GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS CAN BE A GOOD THING. At the beginning of 2020 many of us were quarantining at home without being able to maintain the styles, colors, and looks we had been rocking for the past year. Some of us were essential and working, but there was no time for high maintenance hair! For some of us, our bangs grew out and into our eyes. Some of us saw our natural color for the first time in a long time (and some even liked it!). Some were so tired of their “natural” look, that the first place they broke quarantine for, was for the salon. Hair style and color trends are almost always driven by what is happening on the runway and in the larger cities, but this year, well… this year, happened. Guests started coming to the salon as soon as we opened back up and they haven’t stopped coming. We found out that the salon experience is something that makes us happy at our core, not just outwardly beautiful. The post quarantine hair that we have seen at Salon Blonde as well as on social media, has made way for some gorgeous styles this fall and an effortless beauty has emerged. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are some amazing BOLD looks coming out of our salon, and we love them too, but, by and large, people are opting for rooted color with subtle dimension, and long, sultry curtain bangs that gently sweep away from your face but don’t need constant maintenance. We are embracing natural texture and opting for a natural-looking wave or curl instead of a perfectly coiffed style and we are moving toward colors that are rich, warm, and youthful.
#NATURALBEAUTY
FEATURE PHOTO TO THE LEFT: I enhanced Audrey’s natural color with a light balayage using Redken Blonde Icing, gave her a fresh razor haircut, and added some subtle curtain bangs. These waves are so easy to create! Just sleep in a couple of big braids! HOT TIP: Spray some Kerastase VIP Spray to add natural-looking texture and to keep the waves in place.

ROOTED COLOR WITH
SUBTLE DIMENSION AND NATURAL TEXTURE This look is effortlessly beautiful. Use a big curling iron to create approximately 4 big curls and brush them completely out to create this soft wave. HOT TIP: Run some Redken Glow Dry Oil over the waves to smooth them down and give them some added shine. Angie Huston created this look on Victoria with Redken Haircolor, her color technique was a balayage with a root smudge and a low light.
+ LOOK 2
CURTAIN BANGS
Why we love them: They are a throwback to the 70’s (and who doesn’t love the 70’s?). They can be done on any length hair, they look good on almost any face shape, they are low maintenance, you can add them to any style for an instant update and they look great when you wear your hair up. Lauren Mosely created this warm color and look on Kitana with Redken Haircolor and Pureology Soft Finish Spray

TEXTURED LOW PONY
Have somewhere special to go? How about a textured low pony? Nowhere to go? How about a textured low pony?! Low ponys and baby braids are trending this fall. HOT TIP: Add a baby braid to any hairstyle for added spice. Lauren Mosley created this look with: Redken Powder Grip and the color was glossed with Redken Shades EQ over her existing and grown out balayage.

NATURAL CURLS
Curls! Embrace your Natural Texture! We love this look! HOT TIP: Keep it healthy with Kerastase Discipline Oleo Relax Oil. It’s a nourishing, frizz controlling, relaxing, heat protecting oil you can use wet or dry. Angie Huston created Kameelas color with Redken Shades EQ Creme Conditioning Haircolor.

After all, it’s in the name! Choose cured meats of different textures. Some popular options are prosciutto, capicola,

+ Sweet Fruit brings a needed sweetness to the salty elements. Choose what is in season! Go for bold colors when possible, and don’t shy away from “odd” choices like gooseberries or kiwi. Some of the best bites include meat, cheese, and fruit. Candy and chocolate also have a prized spot on your boards.

CHARCUTERIE [PRONOUNCED SHAR - KOO - TUH REE] BOARDS ARE ONE OF THE BIGGEST TRENDS IN FOOD RIGHT NOW, AND DESERVEDLY SO. Often called “grazing boards” or cheese boards, charcuterie is an art form that is both beautiful and delicious. With all the elements of salty, sweet, creamy, tangy, and crunchy, it’s always a crowd pleaser! Take some time to consider ingredients and layout, and you can easily create something swoon worthy. Choose a pretty board, plate, or even use butcher paper on your counter or table to make your creation. The options are endless for size and shape, and anything goes! TH E E Y E C A N S E E AN INSPIRING POINT OF VIEW
WHEN I WAS A CHILD, MY GRANDMOTHER WOULD GENTLY DIRECT MY GAZE TO THE FARTHEST POINT ON THE HORIZON. “Look as far as the eye can see”, she would say. In this fast-paced, scrolling digital world, we find ourselves staring at screens just inches from our faces for sometimes hours on end. Today, we take a minute to be refreshed by creativity as we allow a few Spring Hill artists to guide our eyes in a beautiful direction.
MIXED MEDIA ale tha carr
Nestled among the perfectly weathered nostalgia in the Spring Hill Antique mall, you are likely to meet with the warm smile and twinkling eyes of artist Aletha Carr. Inspired and encouraged by her surroundings she shares, “In recent years I have shifted in my area of concentration from painting to sculpture. I have become interested in the re-use of everyday objects and especially vintage objects. The surface quality of things with age and the imprint of human handling, the patina and discoloration that is evidence of time and usage inspires me. Color inspires me. There is something personal in the distressed surfaces of old objects. There is history.” Aletha’s assemblages invite the viewer into a tiny mysterious world. People of all ages are drawn to the sculptures which nudge our minds to take a walk... Is this a toy? Can I open it? How did that get in there? This creative conversation is crucial, as she expressed her vision for supporting the arts in our town: “Art is important to any community because it promotes connections. It sparks dialogue, social awareness, generates new ideas and stimulates imaginations. It brings people together and teaches us how to be better humans.” You can find more at www.alethacarr.com and @alethaseye on Instagram. 20

Samantha Ornellas is a passion-filled artist whose inspired images spark emotion and awe for all who experience them. Originally from South Africa, her texture-teased paintings often capture scenes and souls from around the world. Locally, she enjoys teaching others (especially children) how to paint. “Art is a way of expressing yourself. Art is a universal form of communication.
PAINTING samantha ornellas
Everyone can understand it! You can share your ideas and thoughts with other people. Art can bridge the gap between different cultures and bring people together.” Surprisingly, she hasn’t always been confident in her artistic endeavors. She shared the magical story about how in 2008, a stranger approached her and told her that God had given her a creative gift. However, this gift would take time to unwrap, as she wrestled through teaching herself technique and then taking a break to have a baby. “Eventually in 2011 I made a New Years resolution to paint one painting a month, just so I would stop feeling guilty that I wasn’t being faithful with the gift God had given me.” After that, her paintings became a blessing to her, and since then, she has continued to bless others. “Everyone is born creative and art is a form of therapy. If you think you’re not good that’s because somewhere along the way someone probably told you, you are not good.” Each person has unique talents just waiting to emerge: “Don’t bury it because it seems so small in your eyes. Just consistently water that seed, and watch it grow into a beautiful tree bearing much fruit! ” Continue to be inspired on Facebook (Sam Orne Art) and Instagram (@samorneart)

Photographer Jeremy Teran has a similar story about getting a late start as an artist. “I didn’t think of myself as an artist when I started this journey. I think it was because I had this idea that art has to be created by amazing people, who either studied it all of their lives, or they were just born incredibly talented. When I realized art was more about the value

I placed on my work and not the value others might place on it, I realized it was ok to call myself an artist.” Photography has steadily become a popular form of expression in our culture. Jeremy says that he has been able to encourage others through sharing his work. “Most people like to take pictures, so when someone sees my work, it’s not unusual for them to ask how they can take better pictures. I enjoy helping others who want to improve themselves, so taking time to show them something simple they can do to take better pictures is rewarding.” When asked about the inspiration for his tranquil compositions Teran said, “I really like being in nature and just being quiet. It’s a great way to unwind and separate yourself from the daily routine.” One last quote from the artist that I believe can move us today onto our own creative path: “I think one of the greatest gifts
