GIVING BACK (CONTINUED) About 80% of wishes involve travel. Half of those are family trips to Disney World. The program maintains a partnership with Disney so kids get to meet Mickey, Minnie, and their friends up-close and personal. “The characters seek out our wish kids,” Doug said. Some Montana kids make requests more close to home. “We had a fun wish girl from Warm Springs,” Doug remembered. “She wanted a bath tub that never got cold. So, we installed a hot tub big enough for her whole family,” he said. According to her mom, after it was all set up, the girl whispered, “This is way cooler than a trip to Hawaii.” Staff, families, physicians and volunteers have witnessed over and over how receiving a wish boosts a child’s recovery. “Eighty percent of our children survive their medical condition. A wish can be that turning point,” said Doug. “We gave a wish to a girl in Billings. She was fighting cancer. After her wish, she decided, I’m going to quit worrying about dying and just live. She’s a teenager now,” he said. Turning wishes into reality takes more than a fairy godmother, or uncle, or cousin, or even sixty volunteers across the state. With an average cost of $7,500 per wish, the program depends on raising awareness and funds. “We have a strong donor base in Missoula among the business community and board members who bring their connections,” Doug said. People can also help by donating air miles or volunteering for special events. “Our volunteers become ambassadors by telling their stories,” said Doug. This August 14th, the program will host “Walk for Wishes” at Fort Missoula. Supporters can form teams, take pledges, and raise money with every step they take during the event. This year, for a little friendly competition, Doug has organized a Griz vs. Bobcat challenge. Anyone interested can register at Montana.Wish.org. Make-A-Wish Montana holds a big mission with a big heart. “We’re in the business of hope,” said Doug. We give hope to kids when they need it the most. We can be that turnaround point. We’re changing lives.” SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY! Montana.Wish.org 406.259.9848 16

Play Hard, Tr e a t We l l DEE O GEE HAS NEW LOCATION IN MISSOULA
“BE THE PERSON YOUR DOG THINKS YOU ARE” IS NOT ONLY THE TITLE OF C.J. Frick’s brilliantly illustrated book but it’s just plain good advice. As pet owners, we know our furry buddies need quality food, water, shelter, love, and play. We want to give them the very best of each but what if we don’t know what “the best” is? Or worse, what if we think we’re giving them the best but we’re not? Josh and Holly Allen found themselves in a similar situation in 2008. At the time, Holly was working as a Veterinary Technician in Bozeman. Her clients would often ask her to recommend a high-quality food, one devoid of harmful chemicals. She couldn’t in good conscience, recommend any that she knew of. Around that same time, Josh and Holly adopted Jericho, a sweet papillon with Addison’s disease and other health issues. Holly found herself in the same boat as her clients, desperate to find puppy food that would aid in healing and not contribute to his health problems.

Yet according to Josh, “the independent pet industry is very small and family oriented. You really get to know your manufacturers.” In fact, a lot of the products independent stores like Dee-O-Gee sell are not found in bigger stores. They come from smaller brands, committed to smaller stores. Sales and demand aren’t the only thing that have changed. As Josh and Holly’s family grew, it was no longer ideal for their family to travel statewide to their various locations. So Josh and Holly did what they do best: navigate a need and make it better. They revamped Dee-O-Gee into a franchise, allowing trusted business owners to bring their select skills to the table. In Bozeman, you might meet Jane, a veterinarian who has a plethora of pet care knowledge. She also researches companies and nutritional information for Dee-OGee’s food and supplement lines. In Missoula you may meet Doug and Allison who recently re-modeled and re-branded Go Fetch! into Dee-O-Gee’s fifth and newest location.

Five locations is impressive but Josh and Holly are nowhere near finished growing. They continue to look for quality franchise owners that can demonstrate and live Dee-O-Gee’s core values. Those values are Community, Respect, Excellence, Authentic, Team and intEgrity, or C.R.E.A.T.E for acronym’s sake. “Yappy Hours” is just one way each location contributes to the betterment of their own town. It usually pairs a nonprofit and a brewery together in-store to raise money and create connection among the pet community. Knowing manufacturers personally and supporting Montana companies ensures that every product is 100% authentic. According to Josh, Dee-O-Gee also wants to foster a “team-centric, healthy culture for you and your dog” which means getting you outside and active together. “Play hard and treat well” is his motto. And what a good one to have.

dogs, and cats. Any birds, small mammals, reptiles, and even poultry can sometimes get lumped into that. Backyard chickens would be considered an exotic species. WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES WITH WORKING WITH EXOTIC VERSUS DOMESTICATED ANIMALS? Medicine is medicine regardless of the species so exotic animal medicine isn’t necessarily any different than dog, cat, or cattle medicine. The challenges come in because we just don’t have as much experience working with a lot of these species and there’s not as much science available to back up drug protocols or certain diseases. And sometimes when you’re working with animals that are so tiny there’s only so many feasible diagnostic tests you can run. If you’re working with a 60 gram bird and you want to try to run bloodwork but you can only safely take half a cc (cubic centimeter) of blood that can limit the number of tests you can run. There are unique challenges but at the base of it you’re just applying the same thing you learned in vet school, just to different species. DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU AT THE HOSPITAL. Really no days are the same, which keeps my life interesting. We’ll see between 12 and 20 patients a day while managing between one to five in-patients at a time. It’s mostly dogs and cats and then depending on the day we may see guinea pigs, rats, mice, snakes, lizards, birds, and sugar gliders. DO YOU HAVE AN UNUSUAL CASE TREATING AN EXOTIC ANIMAL YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? We had an interesting case with an African Pygmy Hedgehog recently that had a mass in its abdomen and I was able to watch Dr. Card remove it. It turned out to be a mass in the vesicular gland, which is a reproductive gland. The mass was really large and overgrown and was obstructing his normal movement and his digestive tract. We thought at the time that it would probably be some sort of cancer because that’s not uncommon in hedgehogs but it turned out to be a benign overgrowth of the tissue. Dr. Wooten is happy to report that the hedgehog is doing well. DO YOU OWN AN EXOTIC ANIMAL? Take it to Pruyn! 2501 S Russell Street

Jessica screens potential donors over the phone. Then, a full health history is gathered, along with a blood test to screen for diseases that can pass through breastmilk. Jessica also contacts the donor’s obstetrician and her baby’s pediatrician to get a “green light” for her to donate. One a donor is approved she can either drop off frozen milk to Mothers’ Milk Bank or, if she lives outside Missoula, can ship via FedEx overnight. When the milk arrives, it can remain frozen. If needed for a recipient baby right away, milk is thawed, stirred, and heat-pasteurized. One bottle from each donation is sent to a California lab for bacteria testing. Once a sterile result is confirmed, the milk is dispensed to recipients. Mothers’ Milk Bank of Montana is a member of the Human Milk Bank Association of North America, which oversees and sets operating standards for nearly 30 nonprofit milk banks in the U.S. and Canada. “In any given year, we pasteurize and distribute around 80,000 ounces of milk,” Jessica said. “Across the entire association, nearly six million ounces are collected and distributed each year.” Jessica began her work with milk banks in California, working with the Mothers’ Milk Bank of San Jose. As a graduate student, she wrote several research papers on the benefits of breast milk. In her research, she learned of a woman whose infant baby had died; the mother’s milk supply continued and she donated milk as part of her grieving and healing process. “I was gripped by that story,” Jessica explained. “It became clear that there was a need for more research surrounding bereavement and donation. So I dug in.” 28

Eventually, Jessica and her husband moved to Missoula. She and Linsey joined forces in 2012. “It has been this perfect partnership,” Linsey said. “Both of us believed that we could make this happen. It’s amazing to watch a community come together and do this awesome thing.” Their work comes full circle in many ways. Linsey’s grandbaby was born early and needed donated breastmilk. “I watched the nurse feed my grandbaby this bottle of milk that I’d pasteurized. I’d done the blood draw on the donor mom. I stood there, crying,” Linsey said. “It all started with the need I had for my baby and then it was passed on to my grandbaby.” In March, as COVID-19 caused many to lose work, Jessica said the demand for donated breastmilk increased, especially among low-income recipients. “We can always use milk donors,” Jessica said. “We have a good supply right now but we never turn a qualified donor away.” In addition to milk donations, financial donations support financial aid opportunities for milk recipients through the Give the Gift of Milk Fund. “I think so many of us feel helpless right now with so much of what’s happening in the world,” Jessica said. “People want to donate and make a difference however they can, whether via milk or financial donations.” Both Linsey and Jessica speak of the community orientation of the milk bank and the importance of supporting mothers in any way they feed their babies. “We’re all mothers, doing the best we can,” Linsey said. “More than anything, what I love is this idea of women helping each other.”

M AT E R I A L S
PIÑLLAMA
+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

Pregnancy MUST-HAVES
03.
GETTING PREGNANT IS A LITTLE LIKE STEPPING INTO THE WILDERNESS WITH YOUR BACKPACK FULL OF ALL THE THINGS PEOPLE HAVE TOLD YOU ABOUT THIS PHASE OF LIFE. It becomes your toolbox, and as you walk you drop bread crumbs for those behind you. Here’s my sack of bread crumbs: 1. 8 SHEEP ORGANICS SLEEPY BODY LOTION $29-$50 This magnesium body lotion is a lifesaver when it comes to leg cramps (hello, extra weight!), back pain, and hip pain. It’s made with only organic ingredients and it’s safe to use during pregnancy. I recommend buying two 8 ounce bottles to last you all nine months. 2. BOOBIE BODY SUPERFOOD SHAKE $44 There’s nothing like an extra boost of nutrients, especially in the second and third trimesters. This shake (get the Vanilla Cookie flavor!) is a delicious addition to my prenatal care and postpartum journey. It can substitute as a complete meal when you lose track of time or it can fill a gap in nutrients like it did for me! Plus it’s available for local purchase here in Missoula through the Nursing Nook. 3. KINDRED BRAVELY EVERYDAY LOUNGE JOGGERS $28 Comfortable pants are an absolute necessity when it comes to navigating a new body on a daily basis. Some days nothing will fit,
