YOUR l ocal FINANCIAL ADVISORS MARK SANDY WHAT DO YOU CREATE, AND WHAT’S YOUR INSPIRATION? In 2006 photography became my outlet for creative expression after meeting an 80 year-old artist whose photographs inspired me at an art show. I then began taking lessons and was honored to be able to study and spend time with one of the top 100 photographers in the world. Spending time in Jackson Hole and Snake River in Wyoming and Aspen, Colorado was an experience I’ll never forget. A photographer at heart, I focus primarily on landscapes and abandoned buildings. In nature, as in vacant spaces, I see the beauty in the stories they tell- both past and present. Stepping into a once elaborate, stately home whose worn marble floors led to a winding staircase with intricately designed wrought iron railing, I also stood alongside trash and the backdrop of graffiti. Imagining who had lived there and what happened when the house was abandoned, continues to draw me to photography today.

THOM SCHLOSSER WHETHER LIVE THEATER, GALLERIES OR CONCERTS ARE YOUR THING- WHAT KIND OF ART DO YOU ENJOY AND WHY? My wife Becky and I feel very fortunate to live in an area with vibrant arts, history and cultural scenes. We both enjoy supporting area theaters and museums in the Lee’s Summit and Kansas City areas. Becky enjoys local theater companies such as KC Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Actors Theatre and the Forge Repertory Theatre. My love of history is why I support the Historical Society of Lee’s Summit & Museum and The National World War I Museum and Memorial. We both support the Lee’s Summit Symphony, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Union Station of Kansas City.

JOSEPH HYDE WHAT DO YOU CREATE OR MAKE AND WHAT’S YOUR INSPIRATION? I haven’t jumped in with both feet yet, but I’d love to learn more about woodworking, specifically with a lathe. I was fortunate to have some nice woodworking equipment handed down to me from my wife’s grandfather. We have many of the pieces he has created in the past that will inspire my work in the future. WHETHER LIVE THEATER, GALLERIES OR CONCERTS ARE YOUR THING- WHAT KIND OF ART DO YOU ENJOY AND WHY? I’m a big fan of “edible” and “rusty” art. We love checking out unique restaurants and being a great chef is definitely a work of art! I’m also a big fan of antiquing and love stumbling upon a unique item and learning how it would have been used in past generations.

artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. My family is filled with artists,

Janie Jones, Aaron Leimkuehler

and I am always so drawn to their craft— whether it be through painting, sculpture, song-writing, music, film-producing, design or entrepreneurship, I love seeing a piece of who they are expressed in their work. Our February issue is dedicated to artisans and makers. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope that you too are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies and special interests fall to the wayside. I have learned that I have to be very deliberate about allowing myself time to pour into interests that I love and that fill me up.

AROUND TOWN

LEE’S SUMMIT ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO SPREAD KINDNESS The City of Lee’s Summit’s Human Relations Commission is encouraging community members to perform random and purposeful acts of kindness during a weeklong campaign known as “Take Time to Be Kind.” The campaign runs Feb. 10 through Feb. 16. These small gestures – such as telling someone how much they mean to you or performing chores around the house – are easy ways to spread kindness and make a positive change in the community. To highlight how small gestures can make lasting impacts, community members are asked to share acts of kindness on social media using the hashtag #LSKindness. For more information about the “Take Time to Be Kind” campaign, visit LSkindness.net.

CHEERS! APEX ALEWORKS IS PROUD TO BE INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI’S FIRST BREWERY AND TAPROOM. Since opening its doors, the brewery has made a name by standing out among other craft brewers in the Kansas City area with its memorable classic and seasonal beer offerings. Tim Callahan is the new owner of Apex Aleworks and Apex Brew and BBQ Supply store, located next to the brewery. “I started home brewing a few years ago and really enjoyed it, which got me to thinking about starting a brew pub when I retired. Fast forward to June of 2019, and circumstances allowed me to pursue that dream in a timelier manner. This is my first foray into the brew business, and I’m looking forward to this new chapter and the opportunities it presents. “Our founder and previous owner Jeremy Parratt has been in the brewing industry since 2011. Jeremy started an online brew supply store in his basement and transitioned to a brick and mortar store in 2012, which eventually gave birth to Apex

The beers are crafted with the utmost attention to detail and quality to create a product surrounded in excellence and taste. The beer is brewed to style, meaning the beer is brewed as it was historically intended to be depending on the flavor profile of that brew. We offer IPAs, Saisons, Wheats, Sours, Lagers as well as barrel-aged beers. Our beers are unique because we start with some of the best water in the world.”

Enjoy your brew in the taproom’s relaxed, inviting and family-friendly atmosphere. In the supply store, home brewers will find everything needed to brew their own beers, distilled spirits, and wines. BBQ enthusiasts will find grills and smokers along with spices, sauces, seasoned wood, lump charcoal and hardwood pellets for their savory creations. “In the near future, we will be expanding our days and hours of operations. We’re customer-centric and laid back— it’s a combination of amazing atmosphere, great beer, friendly faces and an extraordinary team. We are incorporating additional food options to our menu and regularly host game and trivia events as well as live music on Saturday nights. 2020 will also see a vinyl record pop-up shop on select Saturdays.” Come hungry and pair your favorite beverage with one of their four new paninis: the Ernesto Italiano, country chicken and spinach, butcher’s block and turkey bacon pesto, which are all served on artisan French Boule with a side of kettle chips and a pickle spear. “Looking to the future, we are growing the Apex brand through broader marketing efforts with the goal of offering our beers to other tap rooms, restaurants and bars. Our brewing team is always excited to explore new beer flavor options while keeping an eye on the growing trends in the industry, including a recent partnership with Xtracts of North Kansas City to begin formulating a new line of CBD infused beers. Stay tuned!” Apex Aleworks and Apex Brew Wares are located at 4356 and 4380 South Noland Road in Independence. If you’re not able to stay and enjoy your brew, all beer is available in a four pack to-go. For more information, visit their social media pages and apexaleworks.com. “I love going down to my parents’ farm and walking and hiking around while taking pictures. I also travel to the mountains every year and soak in the beautiful scenery of the vast peaks and valleys. These days, I don’t have too many opportunities to work on paintings for myself, so most of my inspiration comes from the idea that I’m creating something for someone that is going to make them happy. Or the idea that maybe my artwork might possibly inspire someone else,” he says. “I don’t know if that happens or not, but it’s something to strive for I guess.” Visit aaronnorrisstudio.com to see more of Aaron Norris’s unique art. If you're headed to Texas, YOU MIGHT THINK TO PACK YOUR

STETSON AND BOOTS, BUT YOUR LEDERHOSEN? You might be surprised! Just half an hour outside San Antonio sits a spring-fed oasis for Oktoberfest lovers and river rats alike. The area where New Braunfels now sits has been inhabited since the 1600s. Native tribes were drawn to the fresh spring water, and the Spanish discovered the area during one of their scouting expeditions. Although the land was first owned in 1825, it was sold after the bloody battles that cemented Texas as a republic. Named for Braunfels, Germany, the area was founded by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels in 1845. With two spring-fed rivers, the Comal and the Guadalupe, it’s easy to see why the Prince wanted to put down roots. Today, those two rivers bring in a flood of visitors every summer, all hoping to enjoy the cool water int the middle of a tube. You can visit four water parks in one, with several attractions emptying into the Comal River. But there’s more to do than just float in New Braunfels. With a growing dining scene, you can easily eat your way around the city as well, and it’s not all BBQ. Between New Braunfels and its neighboring town of Gruene, there’s plenty of history to investigate as well. Want to dance in the oldest dance hall in Texas? You can kick up your heels at the Gruene Hall, where some of the biggest names in country music have played. Or maybe Texas Hill Country is more your speed. Head to one of the many wineries or have a picnic in the rolling hills. But if you’re looking for good eats, look no further than New Braunfels.

Stop 1

NAEGELIN'S BAKERY Naegelin's Bakery is more than just the place for a perfect sprinkled doughnut. It's the oldest continuously operating bakery in Texas. Founded in 1868, they offer a huge variety of pastries, breads, doughnuts, pies, and cakes. Try the sweet pretzels for a German favorite or go for a bit of Czech flavor with a kolache. Available in sweet or savory versions, kolaches are typified by a yeasted dough. Sweet kolaches occur in circles with a dollop of luscious fruit or seed filling. Try the apricot at Naegelin's. You won't be disappointed. If you're craving something savory,

Stop 2

the bratwurst kolache is the best pig in a blanket you could hope for.

BLACK'S BBQ

Is it sacrilegious to eat barbecue anywhere but Kansas City? Maybe. Is it also delicious? Absolutely. If you want to know what the fuss is about, head over to Black's BBQ. Originally started in Lockhart, TX, this down-home joint has expanded to New Braunfels. Now it hosts a pit that can handle 500 lbs. at a time, and by the look of the lines, they need the space. Grab a pound of the brisket and know what it means to have something melt in your mouth. Don't worry; Kansas City has Black's beat in sides. There was nary a baked bean to

Stop 3

be seen. I was too busy eating fork-tender beef to notice though.

KRAUSE'S CAFE

There are two sides to Krause's Cafe. Walk in the door around the corner from the quaint mural of German life and you'll find a homey cafe serving German comfort food favorites like Kase Schnitzel with biercheese and french fries. For the kiddos, try the four cheese spätzle. They'll never guess it's not mac and cheese. If you need a little more air, head out to the Biergarten and try to believe that you're not in Bavaria. Their expansive beerhall replicates the feeling of Oktoberfest with plenty of German brews on tap as well as a huge

Stop 4

selection of Texas beers as well.

GRISTMILL RIVER RESTAURANT AND BAR For a truly New Braunfels experience, head to the Gruene Historic District. There you'll find the historic grist mill where farmers used to gin their cotton in the 1800s. After a fire decimated the majority of the gin in 1922, the building sat empty until 1977 when it reopened as the Gristmill River Restaurant and Bar. Now you can watch as people float down the Guadalupe as you dine on fresh catfish, chicken fried steak, and tomatillo chicken. They make a mean margarita with only freshly squeezed limes that slake the thirst during hot Texas afternoons. And don’t miss the summer squash sautéed with bacon, tomatoes, and butter or the round cut Gristmill fries. You won’t regret it. 28

LIFE AS RON BURGUNDY, RICKY BOBBY AND BUDDY THE ELF PAYS OFF FOR LOCAL WILL FERRELL IMPERSONATOR ARTICLE ALAN GOFORTH PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

DAVID BABCOCK RECEIVED PERHAPS THE HIGHEST COMPLIMENT ANYONE CAN GIVE A CELEBRITY IMPERSONATOR LAST YEAR. “I probably had five people tell me, ‘Oh, man, you look more like Will Ferrell than Will Ferrell does,’” he says. “That’s because he has aged, and I somehow resemble how he looked when he was younger and making those iconic movies.” Babcock’s resemblance to the actor and meticulous attention to detail have given him a successful side business portraying Ron Burgundy from “Anchorman” (“Ron Burgundy is the money”), Ricky Bobby from “Talladega Nights” and Buddy from “Elf.” He has had millions of social media views and performed in venues from San Diego to New York City to London. When his son and daughter first said their friends thought he looked like Will Ferrell, he wasn’t impressed—until he discovered that resembling someone famous had its rewards. “A local radio station was giving away a trip to New York City at a costume contest during a concert at the Uptown Theater,” Babcock says. “I went to a thrift store, bought an old jacket and literally went next door to a hardware store, bought red spray paint and painted it red. I smelled like pure gasoline. I did my Ron Burgundy routine with nearly everyone in the theater, and by the end of the night, it earned me enough applause to win the trip.” Six years ago, he had his first professional gig when Llywelyn’s Pub in Overland Park hired him as its emcee on New Year’s Eve. He soon began receiving invitations to appear at other events, primarily because of his social media presence. He upgraded his costumes, studied Ferrell’s movies and took his act on the road. “It’s an acting thing for sure, and I’m not the greatest actor,” Babcock says. “But I look kind of like him, I can act like him and CONTINUED >

I can sound pretty close to him in those characters. But my costumes, makeup, hair, and other details are spot-on. I match the iconic view of each character. It’s close enough that people do a double-take and think, ‘Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy just walked into the room.’” He credits his wife, Linda, for the authenticity of his characters. “My wife is my stylist and partner,” he says. “She makes sure all the details are right.” Ron Burgundy, Ricky Bobby and Buddy the Elf have given him an opportunity to travel the world and meet fascinating people. During the 2018 Christmas season, a travel agency invited him to Manchester, England, to help introduce a new airliner. Warner Brothers found out he would be coming and invited him to London to make a video

celebrating the 15th anniversary of “Elf.” San Diego, the home of “Anchorman’s” fictional Channel 4 News, has become almost a second home. “Last year at San Diego Comic Con, I bumped into Thomas Patrick Lennon, who is one of the stars of ‘Reno 911,’” Babcock says. “He looked at me, screamed and said, ‘It’s the greatest day of my life!’ then gave me a hug and took a selfie.” Corporate events are his bread and butter. Ron Burgundy and Ricky Bobby never fail to drive traffic to trade-show booths. “I consistently get rated five stars for all of my appearance types,” he says. “But the best part is that everyone laughs and has a great time. For corporate events such as trade-show appearances, the return on investment from booking me is sky high.” One of the most frequent questions Babcock gets asked is whether he has ever met the real Will Ferrell. Last winter, he learned that the actor planned to appear in character at a Los Angeles Kings hockey game the next evening. Babcock purchased a ticket to the game, booked a flight and showed up at the Staples Center as Ron Burgundy. The two men met in passing outside the broadcast booth. “Will came along with five or six guys around him, with a boom mike and a couple of cameras rolling,” Babcock says. “He came around the corner, did a double-take, planted his finger in my face and said, ‘Get outta here!’ “I wondered if he was upset—but I think he was just surprised!” Photo Credit Alexander Barreto

CREATIVE BIRTHDAY BASH BEING CREATIVE CAN TAKE ON MANY FORMS, AND ONE TANGIBLE WAY TO EXPRESS THAT ARTISTIC SIDE IS THROUGH CREATING EVENTS THAT WILL BE REMEMBERED AS SPECIAL MOMENTS IN TIME. Throwing a birthday party is not only an opportunity to connect with the people we love, but it can also lend an outlet to express our creativity. When Becky Hillyard teamed up with Morgan and Claire from Pink Antlers Studio to plan her daughter’s birthday party, they did just that. “When planning parties, I love seeing an idea come to life,” explains Hillyard. “When working with Pink Antlers Studio, they bring so many ideas to the table, and together we are able to create this magical and special party.” The theme all started with Sutton’s love for butterflies. Once the theme was determined, all of the details began to fall into place to transform this space into an atmosphere that invited young guests to imagine they were fairy butterflies. The soft pastels set a dream-like atmosphere and the balloon garland provided the texture and statement piece that was desired. The table settings, sweet treats and flowers set a whimsical tone that completed the fairy butterfly look. Upon arrival, each guest was invited to pick any color of tutu to wear along with fairy butterfly wings. Once all the guests arrived and put on their tutu dresses and wings, they played fairy freeze dance and musical chairs. Next, a face painter arrived and painted beautiful butterfly designs on each guest’s face. Then it was time for some yummy chocolate cake and sweet treats! PHOTOGRAPHY RACHEL RIGLER 38

“It was so special seeing the look on Sutton’s face when she walked into her party. I will always remember that moment, and the way her whole face lit up,” Hillyard explains. “Second to that moment, my favorite part is always when it’s over. It’s totally worth all the planning and work, but when it’s said and done, my mama heart is happy from the day and happy that it’s over.” CONTINUED >

Divorce and Joint Tax Returns When going through a divorce, the deadline for filing a tax return can come. When parties are married, most ordinarily file a joint tax return unless they are living separate and apart. However, once has a divorce is taking place, filing a joint tax return can be tricky. With a joint tax return, both parties are signing that all the information contained in the tax return is correct. It is true that filing jointly can come with various tax benefits. To find out the pros and cons, it is essential to talk to a certified professional accountant. But when a party signs a joint tax return, both parties are agreeing to their income — in a joint and individual sense. These income figures are then largely used to calculate child support and spousal support. It is hard, if not impossible, for a party to come into court and later

dispute these figures if they signed the joint tax return. In some cases, one party might have a concern that the other spouse is overstating or understating their income. They also might be concerned about various other components of the tax return itself in terms of its truthfulness and accuracy. When one or both of the parties are operating a family business, or have other non-traditional assets, tax returns can be even more complicated. There can also be more risks involved in terms of the various schedules that are attached. In these circumstances, while there might be a tax benefit associated with filing jointly, this could be a reason a party opts instead to file a separate tax return where they note that they are married, but living separate and apart. Otherwise, a party could theoretically end up

being audited or, worse yet, get in trouble with the Internal Revenue Service. For parties going through a divorce, it is vital not just blindly to sign a joint tax return. Instead, many need to seek out the advice of a certified public accountant before they make their decision along with discussing the matter with their divorce lawyer. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. RENOVATE & REFINE

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.

OUT WITH THE

Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.
