WHEN KELLEY DELEO WALKED INTO CARE PLASTIC SURGERY FOR THE FIRST TIME, SHE FELT VULNERABLE. A heart attack in her early 40s left her more convinced than ever of the importance of her cardiovascular health. Kelley, an avid runner, felt her breast enhancements from her early 20s were a hindrance. “Let’s just say breast enhancements and running don’t go hand in hand,” Kelley laughs. “But beyond that, anytime you have previous heart issues, surgery can be a scary thing. I visited a lot of plastic surgeons in the area, and I felt like they were just listing off the standard answers for how to treat me. It wasn’t like that with Dr. Coan.” Dr. Brian Coan runs Cary-based Care Plastic Surgery. Dr. Coan, a graduate of Massachusetts
Institute
of
Technology
(MIT) and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center. Care Plastic Surgery opened 10 years ago in Durham and in 2016 moved to its current location in Cary off Weston Parkway. Care Plastic Surgery focuses on plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face, body and breast, and also provides Botox, fillers and laser treatments. The practice has been honored with various “best of” awards, and U.S. News and World Report recently recognized Dr. Coan as one of North Carolina’s top plastic surgeons. “We understand walking into a plastic surgery office can be a scary thing,” says Tica Lema, Care Plastic Surgery’s chief operating officer. “It’s why our entire staff is committed to making each of our patients feel like our family. We see them and treat them like a mother, brother or best friend.” Tica feels strongly about the staff she brings on board because she wants to ensure every patient feels cared for and protected. “We frequently hear from our patients how much they feel at home in our office,” she says. “When we hire employees, I look for those traits. You can teach skills, but you can’t teach kindness.”

Kelley felt that difference, too. “From the moment I walked through their doors and throughout my entire process, I was blown away by my experience,” Kelley says. “The team was so kind and welcoming. Dr. Coan took his time to create the exact plan that was right for me. I liked that he thinks outside of the box, while at the same time taking every step to ensure my safety throughout the process. For plastic surgery, you need to find the right doctor that really makes you comfortable. And that, for me, was Dr. Coan.”

INSPIRED BY WHEN IT COMES TO BANKING IN NORTH CAROLINA,
MANY
IMMEDIATELY
THINK
OF
CHARLOTTE. However, due largely in part of TowneBank President Patsy Johnson, Cary is establishing its own growing banking presence. Patsy, a native North Carolinian, has more than 30 years of experience in the banking industry. Although she did not get her start in banking, she learned from the ground up, taking advantage of any opportunity for growth and career advancement. Patsy found her first job in banking shortly after moving to Cary almost 35 years ago with her husband. Early on in her career, Patsy worked for several small, local banks that later grew to become large, nationally known banking networks. While she appreciated the experiences she had with those national banks, Patsy realized she enjoyed the opportunities that came with being a local banker. “As a local banker, you have a greater sense of flexibility and can have a positive impact on the community,” Patsy says. “I love being a banker in Cary because of the small community feeling I have when I come to work every day.” Six years ago, Patsy accepted a position with Raleigh-based Paragon Bank. After recognizing a need in the Cary community, Patsy was tasked with expanding the Paragon network into the Cary market.
AROUND TOWNE CATCHING UP WITH TOWNEBANK CARY PRESIDENT PATSY JOHNSON
“While we had an office in Raleigh, we wanted to be able to service the Cary community on a much more local level,” Patsy explains. “Cary is my home, so I was excited to open an office of TowneBank (formerly Paragon Bank) and expand the bank’s presence within my own community.” This past year, TowneBank, a Suffolk, Virginia-based banking network, acquired Paragon Bank through a company merger. Despite the new name, Patsy feels the TowneBank carries the same level of commitment and dedication to its staff, clients and communities. In addition to her work with TowneBank, Patsy has prioritized being an active member of the local community. Patsy says she and her husband are “highly energized individuals” that take pride in being involved in many local activities. They are passionate about giving back and helping contribute to the success of the town. Patsy has been an active member of the Cary Chamber of Commerce, Cary YMCA, Women’s Giving Network, Cary Visual Arts Committee and several other community groups. “Cary has been recognized as a great place to live,

raise a family and work. I couldn’t agree more! For me and my husband, it is very rewarding to be a part of this community,” Patsy says. “Cary has been an amazing home to us for the past 33 years.”

WHEN SHE WAS 21 YEARS OLD, SARAH MCALLISTER BEGAN HER PROFESSIONAL LIFE AS A CHIROPRACTOR. Later, she would train to become a massage therapist and esthetician who would launch a day spa and salon in South Carolina. A decade ago, Sarah opened a second location, Syeni—derived from the Turkish word for “new”—in downtown Apex’s Tobacco and Mule Exchange building. Sarah takes pride in treating her clients like family. At Syeni, she and her colleagues use a completely holistic approach. more. In addition, a vintage-style barbershop for guys and herbal market and tea bar are included. Everyone is welcome—women, men and kids. According to Sarah, Syeni is unique and stands out from other area spas because they’re a one-stop health and beauty shop. Also located within the spa is The Fabulash Bar owned by Erin Tracey. Sarah muses that women leave feeling empowered after spending several hours with Erin. She says that the recent focus on lashes and brows is not a trend, but rather a beauty mainstay thanks to growth in the industry’s technology. “Beauty comes from the inside, as well as the outside,” Sarah says. “When we feel good and look good, we have a positive outlook on life and are much happier. We must have a healthy lifestyle first, live simply and take care of our well-being. Beauty ‘starts at the root,’ and we want to carry that over to our clients.” To book an appointment at Syeni, call 919.387.4166.

your favorite squash—we used butternut squash, Brussels sprouts and piquant cranberries. This dish just may outshine the turkey!
INGREDIENTS + 1 butternut squash, 3/4-inch dice
DRESSING:
+ 1/2 pound Brussels sprouts, halved
+ 3 tablespoons olive oil
+ 5 ounces cranberries, fresh
+ 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
(or frozen and thawed)
+ 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
+ 1 shallot, diced
+ Pinch of kosher salt
+ 3 tablespoons olive oil for roasting
+ Freshly ground black pepper
+ Kosher salt and pepper
+ 1 teaspoon honey
+ 1/4 cup walnut pieces
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 425 F.
2. Prepare the butternut squash. First, remove both ends. Cut squash in half at the waist, remove the peel and scoop out the seeds and fibers. Dice by cutting the squash pieces into 3/4-inch slices, then cross-cut into cubes. 3. Wash and prepare Brussels sprouts. Peel off loose leaves, chop off stalk end and slice in half. 4. On a large baking sheet pan, spread butternut squash in a single layer and drizzle with the olive oil, Kosher salt and pepper. Roast in the oven, (stirring every 10 minutes or so) until the cubes begin to caramelize and brown, about 25 minutes. Roast in batches if necessary. If the sheet pan is too full, the vegetables will steam instead of roast. Set the roasted squash aside in a large bowl. 5. Next, roast the Brussels sprouts, cranberries and shallots. Similarly spread out on the sheet pan, drizzle with olive oil, kosher salt and pepper. Roast for 30-40 minutes until browned. Add these roasted veggies to the bowl with the squash. 6. Whisk the dressing together, and carefully toss with roasted vegetables. 7. Top with the walnut pieces and serve hot. WHISK WhiskCarolina.com 24

Ready to Work OFFICE EVOLUTION CARY PROMOTES COLLABORATION AND COMMUNITY
ARTICLE CAROLINE BARNHILL PHOTOGRAPHY SMITH HARDY
OVER THE LAST DECADE, COWORKING AND SHARED WORKSPACES HAVE CONTINUED TO SEE UNPRECEDENTED GROWTH. Traditionally, these offices were sought after by independent workers seeking a cost-effective place for working outside the home. But today, more large companies are seeing the advantages of shared office space. “Overhead costs for an office are expensive. We can provide an all-inclusive package for individuals and businesses needing office space,” explains Kimberlee Bowlin, Office Evolution Cary’s business center manager. “We’re starting to see large corporate companies shy away from independent, brick-and-mortar offices and looking into coworking and shared office spaces. It provides a lot of overhead savings.” Office Evolution Cary, which opened in 2018 off North Harrison Avenue, provides 26 private offices, three “micro-offices,” as well as shared meeting and coworking spaces. Office Evolution, as a company, was founded in 2003 by hospitality entrepreneur Mark Hemmeter. Mark wanted to create a coworking space designed for entrepreneurs. “We offer everything a worker needs—a business address, mail service, phone, internet, receptionist, conference room time and 24/7 key access—so our clients work on their own schedule,” Kimberlee says. “We include it all so the entrepreneur can come in, get to work and start building their business.”

"WE OFFER EVERYTHING A WORKER NEEDS—A BUSINESS ADDRESS, MAIL SERVICE, PHONE, INTERNET, RECEPTIONIST, CONFERENCE ROOM TIME AND 24/7 KEY ACCESS—SO OUR CLIENTS WORK ON THEIR OWN SCHEDULE”
Another key part of Office Evolution, Kimberlee explains, is the collaborative environment. Office Evolution Cary offers monthly lunch-and-learns and happy hours for members to network with each other. “We describe what we build here as an ohana, a family. Ohana is the Hawaiian word used to describe a group of people fighting for the same purpose,” Kimberlee says. “We’re a family. We’re committed to helping each of our clients build their business however we can.” November 2019 | Cary Lifestyle

CAN A HOUSE TALK? The Pink House can! In her first novel, The Pink House, Circa 1830: A Love Story, Sheila Ogle’s old Victorian mansion speaks to readers loud and clear. In a spirited but playful voice, the Pink House tells her story from her beginnings as a 19th-century railroad man’s home on the edge of town to her prime spot on Academy Street in the up-and-coming historic town of Cary. It’s a beautiful tale, and Ogle masterfully replays for us the history of her pink house from the house’s perspective, taking us step-by-step through the difficult decision of renovating an
