GETTING, AND MAINTAINING, A BEAUTIFUL SMILE IS ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN JUST PEARLY WHITE TEETH. Dr. Sara Spurlock and Dr. Jennifer Jenkins at Dental Design Studio consider themselves the “quarterbacks” of their patients’ oral health because they know good oral health also is very much related to a person’s whole-body health. “Periodontal, or gum, disease effects approximately 70% of all adults in the United States,” states Dr. Spurlock, pointing out that periodontal disease has been linked with a host of systemic health problems, such as Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, stroke, low-weight pre-term babies and inflammatory diseases. “We take our role in the prevention of heart attack and stroke, and other health issues, very seriously and are committed to helping our patients achieve oral health which in turn promotes systemic health,” adds Dr. Jenkins.

The event also features guest speakers and spotlights the Norman Philharmonic with the Richard Zielinski Singers, and the OU combined choirs, and explores the music America composer, Rosephanye Dunn Powell, creator of the four-movement sacred work that harkens to King himself: “The Cry of Jeremiah.” Rosephanye, the Meet the Composer spotlighted artist, chairs the voice program at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, and has been hailed as one of America’s premier composers of choral music.

Rosephanye says music provides a perfect vehicle to come together and honor King’s legacy. “Generally, in music performance settings, there’s more focus on what we have in common, rather than our differences,” she says. “As we work together as a unit to harmonize, blend and share a common message, there’s a sense of unity and

NORMAN PHILHARMONIC (CONTINUED) “I imagine that Dr. King questioned his calling to lead the people. Yet, like Jeremiah, one hears in Dr. King’s sermons and reads in his letters the voice of hope that there will be victory for the cause. Like Jeremiah, Martin Luther King met an untimely death at the hands of a murderer. Both, in their time with God, had hope because they had seen through spiritual eyes the ‘Promised Land.’ They resolved that they would do the will of God and serve the people regardless of what they faced, including death.” As the audience members experience “The Cry of Jeremiah,” Rosephanye says they should imagine themselves in the place of Jeremiah, or King, to feel the struggle and anguish that great leaders experience as they lead. “So often we admire their charisma, courage and speaking abilities; however, we’re unaware of what their lives are like when they’re not in the public eye,” she says. “I want the audience to experience the inner struggles—the pain, the doubt, the questions and the isolation—that come with leadership in difficult times. I want the audience to connect their own experiences with those of Martin Luther King and Jeremiah.” ‘THE TIME IS ALWAYS RIGHT …’ When asked why he chooses to orchestrate the MLK Celebration each year (it’s now in its second year), Richard looks to one local figure in particular as the cause of his inspiration: George Henderson, a retired OU professor and local and regional racial equality advocate who launched OU’s first black student association. Richard hopes more in the community, especially OU’s young minds, turn out to the event and instill in themselves the words of King. One quote from King is always at the ready with him: “The time is always right to do what is right.” “It’s all about virtue—it’s all about doing the right thing,” he says. “When someone’s down, you pick them up. When someone needs help, you guide them.”

OLIVETO ITALIAN BISTRO OFFERS ITS PATRONS TASTY, HEALTHFUL OPTIONS

eating better one of your new y e a r re s o l u t i o n s ? ARTICLE KAYLEE CAMPBELL | PHOTOGRAPHY SEAN FRY

32

Cleveland County Lifestyle | January 2020

EATING HEALTHY TOPS MANY NEW YEAR RESOLUTION LISTS AND, THANKS TO OLIVETO ITALIAN BISTRO IN MOORE, ACHIEVING THAT GOAL HAS NEVER BEEN SO EASY OR TASTED SO GOOD. Oliveto’s menu is full of modern, artisan-inspired cuisine including pastas, paninis, woodstone baked entrees and pizzas, as well as an extensive wine list, house-made peach Bellini’s and specialty cocktails. And with a menu full of mouthwatering dishes like these, it’s easy to be tempted.

Harrison Sikes, Oliveto manager, pulls a handtossed pizza out of the woodstone oven.

Luckily, Oliveto’s menu is highly customizable. In fact, nearly everything on the menu can be made gluten-free, pastas can be traded in for riced cauliflower, and all their signature pizzas can be made with cauliflower crust.

Caliente Chicken with Cauliflower Rice

Health-conscious diners can choose from gluten-free options of traditional dishes like Chicken Alfredo, as well as more daring dishes like the Caliente Chicken–sliced chicken breast, onions, jalapeño bacon, tomatoes, cheddar, jalapeños and spicy tomato cream sauce with thin spaghetti. Or, have your pasta your way with gluten-free penne, your choice of sauce, and with or without meat. But it’s the rigatoni rustica, citrus cedar plank salmon, roasted rosemary chicken and jalapeno risotto that steal the show, said Oliveto manager Harrison Sikes, who formerly worked at the restaurant as bartender. The next step in the development of the restaurant’s customizable menu is to make it adaptable for diners following Keto restrictions, Harrison said. A longtime resident of Moore and co-owner of Oliveto’s in Moore, Mike Sikes got his start in the restaurant business with another Oklahoma-based Italian eatery, Mazzio’s Pizza. After 32 years with the company, Mike decided to open a restaurant of his own. “I’d always worked in the restaurant business and I’d always wanted to open a restaurant in the town where I live,” he said.

Gluten-free Shrimp Scampi

Rather than start from scratch with a new concept, Mike decided to pursue a franchise opportunity. While researching his options, Mike said he repeatedly was drawn back to Oliveto Italian Bistro, which originated in Tulsa. “I think that’s something that makes this restaurant unique,” Harrison said. “The atmosphere is pretty laid back, but extremely welcoming and warm. And if you want to go to a movie, we can get you in and out in 30 minutes. Or if you want to enjoy a long meal with a few courses and bottles of wine, we can cater to that, too. It’s the best of both worlds for people.”

Oliveto Italian Bistro is a casual dining establishment located at 1301 S. I-35 Service Road, in Moore’s prime dining and entertainment area near the Warren Theater. For more information, visit Oliveto in Moore online at OlivetoBistro.com.

GIVING BACK

Thunderbird Clubhouse

NONPROFIT HELPS THOSE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS DISCOVER/REDISCOVER THEIR TALENTS, ABILITIES AND INTERESTS

AS A NEW YEAR APPROACHES, WE OFTEN MAKE RESOLUTIONS TO TAKE CARE OF OUR PHYSICAL HEALTH AND APPEARANCE. While these are worthy goals, there’s another aspect of health that’s all too often overlooked or pushed aside in pursuit of other achievements. A little secret: taking care of mental health is a vital step in helping achieve goals in ANY area of life. To effect lasting, positive changes, you must be mentally prepared and psychologically strong enough to break harmful habits and form healthy new ones. To build this particular savings account may require a repositioning of priorities and a determination to build new coping mechanisms rather than making that splurge purchase, which only temporarily makes you feel better. It may sound daunting to step forward and address this important component of a healthy, well-rounded life. Seeking help may require stepping out of your comfort zone and feeling exposed. But here in Cleveland County, you need not go it alone, for there exists an amazing organization that not only helps individuals focus on their own mental health but brings people together to work smoothly in a community format. At Thunderbird Clubhouse, individuals can find help and support—and a chance to serve a worthy organization. Through this organization, individuals can put their mental health first so that they can find success in all the other parts of their lives. I spoke recently with the communication unit at Thunderbird Clubhouse and learned about their organization, how to get involved, and what you can do to help. ARTICLE LINDSEY DAVIES 38

Cleveland County Lifestyle | January 2020

COULD YOU PROVIDE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF YOUR ORGANIZATION? WHAT IS YOUR MISSION? Thunderbird Clubhouse is a community of individuals in recovery from mental illness. The goal of the Clubhouse is to support its members as they discover or rediscover talents, abilities and interests. We are creating a new future for adults recovering from mental illness through the positive power of meaningful work, community, choice and hope. WHAT ARE YOUR SHORTAND LONG-TERM GOALS? Our vision and long-term goal is that all adults with mental illness will experience a community of recovery. We achieve this by empowering our members through opportunities to share their skills and be needed in the work of the Clubhouse. We develop meaningful relationships through the work and shared responsibilities. Our short-term goal is to expand our membership by reaching out to community partners and agencies to serve a larger population in the Norman area. WHAT AREAS DO YOU SERVE? O n e Wo m a n ' s Fitness Journey WHEN DID YOU FIRST BEGIN YOUR PERSONAL WELLNESS JOURNEY? I began my fitness journey specifically with Orangetheory Fitness sometime around early September of 2018. I had fallen into a rut and a dear friend invited me to attend a class with her. After my first class, I was hooked. I signed up and attend four to five classes each week, rain or shine, no excuses. WHAT DOES WELLNESS MEAN FOR YOU? Wellness is the ability to live life to the fullness. Wellness is enjoying time with my family. Wellness is having the energy to work all day, and still being able to play basketball with my son. Wellness is the ability to get a good night’s sleep. Wellness is watching your nutrition; what you put in is what you get out. HOW HAS OTF HELPED YOU ON YOUR WELLNESS JOURNEY? OTF has changed my life. I actually enjoy working out. The coaches are extremely encouraging. The entire staff at OTF are some of the most welcoming people you will meet. I love how they know each and every member’s name. I enjoy that each and every class at OTF is different. There is no shortage of high fives and “you can do it” attitudes at OTF. I have made some lifelong friends with members of OTF family. I love how they keep me motivated and how they keep me accountable. We are all striving to be the best versions of ourselves. WHY DO YOU THINK OTF WORKED SO WELL FOR YOU? At OTF, you do not have to think about what you need to do. You just go in and do them. Each of the weight room exercises is demonstrated by the coaches. The coaches are there help you. I have always been active, as I played soccer in high school and exercised regularly my entire life. The difference is I would go to the gym, run for a while on the treadmill, do some weights and then
