BED AND BREAKFASTS HAVE LONG BEEN A HALLMARK OF THE WILLIAMSBURG HOSPITALITY CULTURE. The intimacy of the “BnB” experience is much different than that of traditional lodging. The model dates to a time when communities were more open, housing travelers and soldiers passing through town.

Guests would perhaps be greeted with refreshment, offered the room of one of the residents, and made a proper breakfast before continuing their journey. One such location still provides these intimate touch points and are a delight to repeat travelers from generation to generation. Billy and Sharon Scruggs, of the Fife and Drum Inn, have hosted guests for twenty-one years at their property. The repurposed structure, built by Sharon’s grandfather, Webster Hitchens, provided lodging and commercial services for many since the restoration era of Colonial Williamsburg. The Fife and Drum Inn portion of the Hitchens Building offers seven rooms and two suites for yearround lodging. The Inn allows the Scruggs’ inventive renovation of the family space, just blocks from the epicenter of activity, to occupy their working retirement at a pace that suits them. THREE SISTERS BOUTIQUE, WAS INSPIRED BY MY THREE DAUGHTERS, MARIA, ABBEY, AND ANNA. Each daughter has her own unique style and a desire to shop with family and friends. We visited numerous clothing stores only to find myself sitting alone on a bench waiting for my daughters in the dressing room. However, if I found a boutique for me then my daughters were left to wait, unable to join in the “dress up” fun. To create a generational shopping experience, I founded Three Sisters in 2016, a boutique that accommodates women of all ages and celebrates their style. After several more years I acquired the

HERE WE ARE, DEEP INTO 2020 WITH A REALIZATION THAT OUR HOMES ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. The functionality of our spaces, the aesthetic of our rooms, the mood, the color palette, the ability of each to adapt to a given day’s needs, these are the challenges we take on when designing for our clients. Style and design mean nothing without comfort. Its long been feared that comfort must be sacrificed to achieve an interior space worthy of praise, and yet with today’s technology and achievements with performance fabrics, this could not be further from the truth. We can work towards the vision for your home while ensuring the room is functional and user friendly, so here is where we need our client’s help. What aesthetic brings you joy? + Use of a cutting board to arrange a variety of meats and cheeses is more an element of authenticity than sophistication. Having the entire surface covered is not the point, but rather to enjoy savoring a few selections to satisfy the palate.
+ The Williamsburg Winery has developed a special relationship with Terra di Siena to enhance their wine tasting experiences for guests. Utilizing Filippo’s expertise on the ingredients and preparation of the charcuterie makes for a completely authentic pairing.
+ “When restaurants slice the meat at 2 or 3 o’clock for a 5 o’clock tasting, it leaves the board looking brown and lacking. I make the time to slice just at the right time for the flavors to be prime,” states Gambassi.

Filippo Gambassi shared his perspective with Williamsburg Lifestyle Magazine from his Richmond based business. Charcuterie is the very art of enjoying + “A thinly sliced Guanciale melts in the mouth like butter.” Filippo Gambassi
one of life’s simplest pleasures. Filippo prefers quality over quantity in the most explicit sense. Terra di Siena truly has a Master at the helm. The depth of knowledge surrounding the aging process, raising of the livestock, and preparation of charcuterie boards is beyond impressive. “Being a resident of the mid-Atlantic most of my life, specifically Virginia, has mostly proven to be a meteorological gem of a climate.” Gambassi managed to draw a direct comparison of Richmond to Tuscany, in terms of the year-round seasonal flow and proximity to both the mountains and the ocean. Gambassi has observed an unfortunate practice, across the country, of cutting the meats too early in the day to save time. This detracts from the quality of the experience, making an otherwise tasty cut of meat or cheese dry and flavorless. Another detail pointed out

light offers ideal lighting. A cloudy day delivers soft light--evenly distributed in all directions. A sunny day may cause harsh shadows and blown-out highlights. If shooting on a sunny day, look for a large area of shade. Consistency with even lighting is key. Always study the light and how it falls on your subject.
