Sota Clo thing Co Spencer Johnson sketched his initial designs for sota clothing as part of a class project at the University of Minnesota Duluth. While the objective was to create a fictional brand, Spencer took it as an opportunity to create clean, finely designed Minnesota apparel he felt was lacking for our state. After creating the logo and graphics and receiving a great deal of support from his classmates, he decided to press on and make sota clothing a reality. While Spencer is an avid travel enthusiast, his passion for his home state of Minnesota continually grows and it always brings him back to her shores. He draws his inspiration from the Northland where he studied, and from the trailblazers who’ve gone before him in their own creative pursuits. Since its initial debut in 2011, sota clothing has picked up considerable steam. Countless Minnesotans have embraced his designs as a wearable way to express their home state pride. In 2018, sota clothing opened up their first retail store in St. Louis Park within the historic Walker Building. Between their Minnesota-inspired apparel and merchandise from other local artists, they’ve become a one-stop shop for local gift-givers. Stop by today at their shop in St. Louis Park at 6518 Walker Street or shop online at www.sotaclothing.com and follow them on Instagram @sota_clothing. CONTINUED >

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHELLE HORAN PHOTOGRAPHY Serge + Jane is a lifestyle store featuring Men’s + Women’s apparel, accessories, home goods + gifts. They also plan to expand to Pets + Kids soon! The inspirations for the shop name + space are Serge Gainsborough + Jane Birkin. Serge was a famous French Pop Musician and Jane, a model, singer and actress, also well-known for being the muse for the Hermès Birkin bag. The shop combines his passion for music and her love of fashion... and the rebellious, fun mischief + magic they created together! The vibe at Serge + Jane is heavily influenced by So Cal fashion and lifestyle. They carry lines that are effortlessly chic and laid back, yet playful + unique. In addition to apparel, they also carry new + used vinyl records and record players. A highlight of the shop is a rotating record wall visible when you first walk in. The used vinyl record wall is rotated frequently so there is always something new to discover. Serge + Jane feels strongly about supporting and highlighting local makers and brands. They carry an assortment of local food items such as nuts, savory sauces + dips and meatball mix, as well as jewelry, candles, bath bombs, room sprays and apparel! Some of their most popular local items are the North Coast Soul MN Nice AF + Cold AF sweatshirts and tees! Serge + Jane has previously hosted local maker Holiday Markets, Pet Photos with Santa, Pop Up Shopping Events and Art Shows and look forward to getting back to events where they can have community gatherings again soon. Come check them out in store at 4532 France Ave South in Edina and near the Linden Hills area. Or, shop online at www.sergeandjane.com and on FB + Instagram @sergeandjaneshop.

QUALITY CARE FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY LINDEN HILLS DENTISTRY HAS RECENTLY REMODELED AND EXPANDED THEIR PRACTICE. It now encompasses an additional floor, with five new treatment rooms (for a total of twelve), an additional reception room, an extra sterilization space, and another conference room. “Basically, we just needed more room to spread out,” says Dr. Kordie Reinhold, who joined the practice 32 years ago. Besides more space, the practice also added some new technology. One is Cone Beam CT 3D Imaging, which is extremely beneficial for implant placement and other endodontic services; another is improved airway devices. Linden Hills provides a wide range of services for people of all ages, including general dentistry, cosmetic services, Invisalign®, Botox®, and oral cancer screenings. At no additional charge, and for their utmost comfort, patients can request noise cancelling headphones, heated blankets, aromatherapy, and much more. “I think it’s important that the people who come here get a good experience,” says Dr. Peter Hinke, who joined Linden Hills Dentistry in 1995, and who provides comprehensive care as well as endodontics. “That’s what really matters to all of us. Having patients want to come back and having their friends and family come here as well.” In addition to Dr. Reinhold and Dr. Hinke, there are two associate dentists. Dr. Jane Puntillo, who is passionate about high quality, gentle care, and Dr. Matt Hawn, who joined this summer, and brings 10 years of experience in dentistry to the practice. “We’re thrilled to have him,” says Dr. Hinke. “He’s a great addition.” Linden Hills Dentistry also employs a number of hygienists, who make up their wellness team, and a first-rate office staff. “We work with the best staff,” says Dr. Reinhold. “Great hygienists and a great business staff who are very motivated and engaged. We have a really good culture; we enjoy each other a lot, support each other, and try to make the most of every day.” Adds Dr. Hinke, “It’s a very unique workplace and everyone looks forward to coming to work and serving our patients.” Dr. Reinhold stresses that they have a true commitment to service. They have done extensive training and are always striving to make the patient experience more enjoyable. “We spend a lot of time working on that and it’s part of who we are,” she says. “There are many people who find dentistry rather stressful and it’s really rewarding when patients are pleased with the way everything went.” CONTINUED >

Since they realize that the cost of dental care can be an issue, they try their best to keep prices down and accept most forms of insurance. They also pride themselves on standing behind their work and caring about the families that have been loyal to them for years. Dr. Reinhold says she has patients she saw as children who are now bringing in their own children. “The rewards [of dentistry] have been an amazing career, the people I get to encounter, and watching families grow and change,” she says. Linden Hills Dentistry is in a wonderful area, says Dr. Hinke, and is surrounded by beautiful lakes. Residents are very supportive of the small business district and are grateful for it. He goes on to say that Linden Hills is a very close-knit community. “We kind of put our stake in the ground by living here and working here; we live less than three blocks away from the office,” says Dr. Hinke. Hinke and Reinhold share more than a career in dentistry. Married for 30 years, their philosophy is to stay active when not in the office. They both work out at a gym and try to stay as fit and healthly as possible. “We both actively try to engage in physical fitness and diversifying that with as many things as we possibly can,” says Dr. Reinhold. “It’s been a big part of our lives, and we have three children who are now adults who are all equally healthy. As a family, when we were able to travel, it always included fitness.” The newly remodeled and expanded office is state of the art, clean, and updated. In order to keep everyone healthy and safe from COVID-19, they’ve implemented some new strategies. For example, they added air purifiers in every treatment room; these have the ability to turn the air over every six minutes. In addition, they’ve invested in new high-volume evacuation systems to limit or reduce the aerosols that can be created during dental procedures. All surfaces are wiped down between patients, and, of course, all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols are enforced and implemented in every way. “People can feel very comfortable and very safe coming here,” said Dr. Hinke. QUEENIE & PEARL IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE FASHION BOUTIQUE. It is more of a slip back in time to an era of rock n’ roll, peace and love. Named partly after “Queenie”, who was a real-life Penny Lane and ‘band aid’ touring across the country with legendary music makers like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and David Bowie (think Cameron Crowe’s movie “Almost Famous”). The other half pays tribute to Janis Joplin and her second and final solo studio album “Pearl” released in 1971. Queenie & Pearl is known best for its unique makers and mix of vintage and new clothing, accessories, jewelry and gifts. All of the store items are personally researched and hand-picked by the owner herself, Lisa Banwell, with a focus on women makers and entrepreneurs. “LAKES AREA RE ALT Y IS NOT A CORPORATE REAL ESTATE RELATIONSHIP AND YOU ARE NOT BEING PASSED A L O N G ,” S AY S S T E V E HAVIG. “WE LIKE TO CONSIDER OURSELVES COLL ABORATORS INSTEAD OF C O M P E T I T O R S . ” LIKE MOST INDUSTRIES, THE REAL ESTATE MARKET HAS HAD TO FIND INNOVATIVE WAYS TO SAFELY SERVE CLIENTS. Despite COVID-19, the desire to purchase one’s own home has not diminished, and sales in Minneapolis are going strong. “People are doubling down in the investment of their homes,” says Matt Basil, a Realtor® at Lakes Area Realty. WHAT’S HOT IN THE MARKET; WHAT’S NOT Some of Basil’s clients who purchased their home three years ago recently decided to sell; it took only 11 days on the market with 19 showings. And, the number of showings scheduled has surpassed levels at any point in 2019. Steve Havig, Owner and Broker at Lakes Area Realty sees most sales in the range of $250,000-$450,000, often leading to a multiple offers scenario. Cabin properties are also experiencing a lot of interest; sales over the summer were up by 20%. With CONTINUED >

FINANCIAL BUZZ (CONTINUED)
COVID-19 severely limiting travel options and people being wary of flying, cabins are a smart alternative. They allow families to get away while distancing themselves from others. On the other hand, the luxury housing market has been negatively impacted; houses are slower to move in the higher price ranges. Condominiums have not fared well either due to concerns about shared spaces and multi-family buildings. PATIENCE IS THE KEY WHEN BUYING YOUR NEW HOME For sellers, multiple offers are, of course, a boon, often leading to much higher selling prices. But for buyers, these situations can lead to continual disappointments. “Buyers are frustrated with the multiple offer scenarios and losing out on properties they are seeking to acquire”, says Havig. “Lakes Area Realty had a client who put offers in on five homes until finally getting one they wanted, paying $20,000 over the asking price.” Havig and Basil stressed that buyers need to keep their expectations realistic. When they lose a bid on a home to someone who offered a higher amount, they have to go back and start from square one. However, both expect that there will be a potential boost in home supply coming this fall, so buyers should be ready.
32
Minneapolis Lakes | September 2020
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LOW INTEREST RATES Low interest rates are another factor that has led to a high demand for properties. “Mortgage rates are very indirectly tied to the Prime Lending rate and have a direct and inverse relationship with the bond market; bonds go up, rates go down,” says Basil. “Real estate rates fluctuate often, but have been anywhere from 3.0-3.25% in July 2020.” SAFETY FIRST Sellers may be cautious about allowing strangers inside their homes during this pandemic. And buyers may be leery of entering others’ homes. Lakes Area Realty has implemented strict guidelines for Open Houses. Social distancing will be in effect, and masks must be worn at all times. If gloves are not worn, hand sanitizer will be given out at the door by a Realtor® or an assistant. Another Realtor® will then take one group at a time through the house and wipe down anything that is touched. Use of bathrooms will not be allowed. “Do what you are most comfortable with,” says Basil. “And go about showing your home or touring potential homes in a way you feel good about. Lakes Area Realty has been getting creative with offering a hotel stay credit while your home is being shown over a weekend… to be able to get showings done in a manageable way in a more condensed time period.” There is also the option of renting an ozone machine. These can help clean the air after multiple showings.
