This grant will allow us to offset local funding that can now be prioritized elsewhere,” says Brentwood City Manager Kirk Bednar. The city's staff are working with TDOT and the Nashville Metropolitan Planning Organization to initiate the project. Growing up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Chambers learned his first chords and licks on the acoustic guitar from the players that performed in the predominantly Black churches around Philly. “I grew up in a strict household and wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music,” Chambers says while recording an upcoming episode for the Southern Americana podcast in mid-July. “Most of my early musical influences came from those who played in our church. They weren’t household names, but in my opinion, those musicians are some of my musical heroes because they were amazing.” Chambers recalled that Bishop Lorenzo Harrison, the man who started the music in his church, was friends with Elvis Presley. He is considered one of the best steel players in the church music scene and also influenced

These are women who have a desire to transition to a higher economic level through professional development. Dress for Success provides the clothes, the tools, and a network for women to help them become financially independent. This, in turn, leads to more security for their families. A career specialist helps women assemble their resumes. Even if they have never been in the workforce, these specialists help them discover the skills they have and how to market them. Before an interview, a woman is given what they call a “suiting,” which consists of an interview outfit and accessories. Wearing the appropriate outfit instills the CONTINUED >

If the woman gets the job, she is then able to return and receive a week’s worth of clothing, which she can mix and match as she desires. “Many of these women,” says Sharon, “have never had anyone pamper them or encouraged them to feel good about themselves.” “We also have a professional women’s group that mentors our clients, because when you get into the workforce, the first step is getting the job, but keeping the job is the second step,” she says. Aaron’s late mother, Cynthia, was a tailor to the stars. She says, “I watched my grandmother joyfully tend her own garden, my father’s entrepreneurial career, my mother’s creative skill in her poetry, and grew up knowing that art and love was in our blood. There is a book filled with an array of their signature styles, all named after well-known cocktails. After all, this is a bar. “The most popular style here in Nashville is The Mai Tai, which is a beachy, wavy look where the ends are a little bit straighter,” says Bonnie. “The Cosmo is another popular one which has a finished curl look, more of like a Southern Belle look.” Once a style is chosen, clients are then taken to the shampoo room, which is a luxurious part of the Drybar experience.“You get a wonderful shampoo and conditioning where you can add a scalp massage or a hydrating treatment,” she says. On average, a visit takes about 45 minutes from beginning to end. And they style all hair types and textures. Of course, men are welcome, too. Even those with short hair will drop in for a shampoo and a scalp massage. They also have regular clients who come in a couple times a week. They are usually enrolled in the Barfly membership program, which is filled with great extras. “We have women who really come in to feel great before they go out with girlfriends, or go out on a date with their boyfriends or their husbands,” says Bonnie. AUDIO CALLING ALL AUDIOPHILES WITH PASSION FOR HIFI

“WHY DIDN’T I HEAR THIS BEFORE?” The audio engineer expert and owner of Nashville HiFi hears that question frequently from shoppers and clients, who are often listening to crystal-clear sounds for the first time, due to the store’s equipment. “By combining carefully selected brands of hi fidelity products for their sound and build qualities, we’re able to reproduce music the way artists intended for it to sound. Not messed with by tweeters or woofers in a speaker that have you asking, ‘Where’s the bass?’” says Nashville HiFi operator Brad Bossman. Like his name, Brad is a bossman of sound. He’s specialized in stereo components, home theater systems, turntables and highend headphones for the past 17 years. He and his father used to work on sound systems together, learning firsthand the components required for quality. “I approach the business as it’s my job to do the homework for clients. I can explain what the equipment does and doesn’t do, and how the output changes at various points,” he assures. “I encourage clients to ask a ton of questions so they know they made the absolute best decision.” Handling sound projects throughout the United States, Brad says he still has clients from the first day he opened. He originally launched the store in Florida. In 2007, he moved to the quaint town of Fairview, and stayed there for seven years. The store’s been located in Nashville for four years now. Acting as a consultant from the beginning to the installing end of projects, Brad says he brings the very best of options into his lineup. He also can set up wireless systems. He carries three lines of speakers exclusively in Tennessee, for example. “Some brands in the store you won’t find again until you hit Texas,” he says. Examples of brands he carries include Simaudio, Octave, Rega, Dynaudio, NAD, Cardas Audio, Kaleidescape, Astell&Kern, NAIM, YG Acoustics, Focal and Audioquest. With so many people working from home and entertaining themselves in place, the Audeze brand of headphones offered by Nashville HiFi are popular. MUSIC ROOM FOR MUSIC CITY Brad delivered the sound system that went into the custom-designed music room of the 2019 Whole Home Concept House in Nashville commissioned by House Beautiful. He worked with Atlanta-based interior designers Forbes + Masters from start to finish to create an “adult listening lounge” for the project. The house is located specifically in Belle Meade at 725 Westview Ave. Brad says the designers were looking for the best in HiFi in all of Nashville. “When consulting multiple resources, the designers were told the same thing: Come to us,” he adds. He says the six-month project encompassed components totaling about $17,500. You can have the best air conditioning and heating system, but if your windows are not energy efficient, your house may still feel like you’re outside. Windows that are old, have seal failure (you’ll have fog and dirt buildup between the panes), or water leakage (you’ll see rot around the windows and windowsills), need to be replaced. Doing this will result in lower electric bills. Rick Schuman, a sales representative for Pella windows for more than 15 years, and Paul Atwood, a trade representative for Pella, provide some helpful advice about replacing your home’s windows.

Look online for a professional window installer that only handles windows. If you go to Pella.com and put in your zip code, you can easily schedule an appointment with a representative. A 5/8 thick triple pane with low E (emissivity) will reflect the sun rays while still allowing in visible light. There’s a balancing act because you want energy efficient windows, but still want the sunlight that comes through to look natural and maintain the true colors on the walls. Also, look for an energy label of .30 or less.

The lead time is four to six weeks, so don’t wait too long to get started. For an average size house, allow three to five days for installation. Once they’re in, have a salesperson come back out and walk around the house to make sure everything looks fine.
