The portrait of home. I REMEMBER CALLING MY HOME THE BIG FOREHEAD HOUSE. My husband and I—just dating at the time—had looked at so many houses that it seemed like with each new driveway we knew less and less of what we were after. Was the fixer upper with the knee-high grass our style? Or was it the saltbox house with too many rooms and a sagebrush yard? Maybe it was manicured lawn that didn't have room for our horses. No, no, and no. It's hard to pinpoint what your style is before you have your own home. Apartments had been easy. One or two rooms, done and done. If we got sick of it, it wouldn't be too long before we'd be inhabiting another place that called for new style. The big forehead house wasn't what I expected. It was a cape cod style home

SLEEP. Now, back to that phenomenal room I mentioned. Imagine a corner room where you’re surrounded with floor-to-ceiling windows and a wrap-around balcony overlooking the ocean. The breezy white and gray decor is fresh and calming, especially with all of the natural light streaming in. And I always appreciate the luxurious room touches that Four Seasons is known for like an in-room tablet for ordering room service; wireless video streaming capability from smart devices; twice-daily housekeeping; a customizable Four Seasons Bed (with your choice of plush, signature, or firm mattress topper); and my personal favorite—a tea kettle.
RELAX. Curling up in a fluffy robe, sipping on a cup of tea, overlooking the water from The Surf Club spa’s relaxation room was one of my favorite experiences of the

From the natural light to the clean, crisp design of the space, the spa is another area that you won’t want to leave. HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS. As our first house matures into a home, so does that first piece of original artwork, with hopes that it’ll become a family treasure later on. Lynne Himes understands the evolution of art and home. As entrepreneur and owner of L.A. Design Custom Framing in Missoula, she’s steered the growth of her gallery from fledgling start-up to high-end brokerage to exceptional event developer. She knows how a piece of art can tell the story of a life well lived. “You can find something in art that you didn’t even realize you wanted,” she explained. “The heart speaks loudest.” In 2019, L.A. Design celebrated its 30th anniversary. Lynne credits family and hometown connections for her enduring success.

“In 1989, my business partner Amber and I started straight out of college at UM. We worked for Monte Dolack. Amber did the framing. I did the marketing. When we were ready to start a business of our own, Missoula embraced our families. The only reason we made it was because of our local connections,” Lynne expressed. The partners’ first commission came from Missoula attorney Bill Jones. Mr. Jones had collected vintage items from the famous 1923 Heavyweight Championship fight between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons in Shelby, Montana. He asked Lynne and Amber to create a display. “He asked us to arrange that collection in a shadow box— a big shadow box, almost six by six feet. His vision gave us confidence to take that piece to the highest level. We ordered hand-etched glass, hired the best calligrapher in the nation to reproduce a vintage ticket, and created an actual boxing ring complete with a canvas floor and cotton ropes.” As Lynne’s reputation for detail and quality grew, she gained access to high-profile buyers. “Our first celebrity client was Polly Bergen. We didn’t know it at the time, but she was a big Hollywood star. Since then, we’ve framed Super Bowl rings, shoes and jerseys for Shaquille O’Neal and Michael Jordan, and a sword for the Prince of Abu Dhabi,” Lynne shared. “They’re not just flat pieces on a wall. The way we design them can use every sense: visual, touch, and motion. We put our creative energy into our art,” she said.

“We have diversified. Artwork and entertaining go hand-in-hand, so we host corporate and private events in our gallery. Now, we’re more about creating a special experience,” said Lynne. Outside of the gallery, Lynne and her staff have expanded their services. They now curate first-class events and fundraisers. “We worked with Huey Lewis to produce one of the most successful fundraisers in the Bitterroot Valley’s history,” she noted. “We also were given the opportunity to put on a three-day private birthday party with people flying in from all over the world to Plains, Montana. We’re now designing the upcoming 50th Anniversary Gala for Montana’s Special Olympics this September.” Moments make a home. Over time, they meld into memory. Stories, and the treasures that inspire them, pass from generation to generation. Lynne understands how art fits into that heritage. “I don’t want to sell things that don’t have meaning,” she said. “I want people to be able to pass pieces down from generation to generation. Our clients who brought in baby spoons or that first pair of baby shoes, their kids are coming in now and asking us to create something similar for their own children. That’s what comes from being in the same town for three decades.”

Stutzman’s Amish Furniture in Polson is a beautiful showroom of handcrafted bedroom furnishings, dining room sets, living room pieces, outdoor furniture, and much more. Growing up Amish in Ohio instilled a deep sense of honesty, service, and family in both Chriss and Laurie. Chriss is from a family of 17 and he was taught at a young age that whatever he did, he was to do it with excellence and integrity. And that is exactly what you will find in his products. Eventually, the Stutzmans left the Amish way of life, but they did not leave their Amish families behind. Customers of Stutzmans Amish Furniture often times want personalized pieces. In fact, ninety percent of what comes in on each truck is already sold. Any of their hardwood furniture can be customized by wood species, stain, color, fabric, hardware and for the most part, size. Their outdoor furniture is available in fifteen different colors. For the buyer who would like to sit down, look at samples, and talk in-depth about possibilities there is no shortage of knowledge, and creativity. For instance, Chriss and Laurie remember a customer who came into their store with a large and irregularly shaped marble piece they acquired from Spain. They wanted it inlaid to a table. The Stutzmans took measurements, traced the stone onto paper, and mailed it off to their Amish table maker in Ohio. The table was beautifully made and shipped to Polson where the Stutzmans then inlaid the marble. The customer was thrilled. To browse the Stutzmans’ showroom is more than just an errand in furniture shopping. It is a multi-sensory experience. You will smell the hardiness of the larger wood furniture but you will also notice the attention to details in some of their smaller items, like the canes that are somehow miraculously made of two different woods entwining into tiny geometric shapes. You might pick up a jar of St. Ignatius jam and feel pride for our valley. If you happen to be coming from out of town, know that however far you are traveling, it is surely worth the trip. John made his way to Montana in the 1970s. He was born and raised on a farm in Illinois and then ventured to California and Mount Shasta, eventually tagging along with a friend’s brother to Missoula. “I saw Missoula and I said, ‘I’m not staying in California. I’m coming here,’” John explained. He tried a couple of semesters of school at the University of Montana but gave up school for a job with a fencing company. Then tragedy struck. John’s father, Irving, was killed while piloting his small airplane in Illinois. John packed up and returned to Chicago to help his mother with the family’s rental properties. Within a couple of years, he convinced her to sell. Then John ventured out on his own, traveling to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with a friend.
“My ma had property up there,” John said. “We logged

Sitting his office, lined with custom fir paneling and a ceiling made with handhewn beams from a tobacco barn, John rattled off the names of architects and builders across Montana and the United States, professionals, celebrities, and “regular Joes” alike who’ve all turned to Superior Hardwoods for their wood needs. You could call him an addict or a collector. Either way, John and his staff pride themselves on sourcing quality pieces, whether reclaimed or new. John still owns some of his mother’s original property in northern Michigan, harvesting wood every ten to 15 years. “If you manage it right, and treat it like a garden, hardwood stands will last for generations,” John explained. “It’s a renewable resource that adds value to your home.”
