YOUR l ocal FINANCIAL ADVISORS MATT SIBBING WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY MEMORY? We enjoy the holidays because we are a busy family of five. I don’t have a specific holiday memory that stands out more than another, but I can say it’s one of the few times a year where we are all home and get to do things as a family. That is what I like best about the holidays. DO YOU HAVE A NEWLY CREATED OR OLD FAMILY TRADITION YOU CELEBRATE OVER THE HOLIDAYS? We actually just started a new tradition this year. My family is going to spend the holidays traveling. This year we are headed to Arizona with my mom, dad and my sister’s family. Everyone is looking forward to the trip and time away with family. Hopefully this new tradition sticks.

MATT KNEHANS WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY MEMORY? One of my favorite memories of the holidays was going to my grandmother’s for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was an eight hour drive to her house over the prairie that is Illinois. I was always excited to see all of my cousins who were there. We were especially close, as there were nine of us, and each of us was about one year apart in age. We would play, do chores around the farm and reestablish the pecking order. What made it great was having four days together at Thanksgiving, and usually a week or more at Christmas. I can remember the ham, turkey and once we had a goose. The goose was not very popular, and only happened one year. What I learned about the holidays is that it’s a time to appreciate and enjoy family whether you’re falling asleep watching the “Wonderful World of Disney,” or fighting over the wish bone.

SCOTT WALL DO YOU HAVE A NEWLY CREATED OR OLD FAMILY TRADITION YOU CELEBRATE OVER THE HOLIDAYS? Through all the years, the magic of Santa still fills our family. His helper, “Senor Jolly,” the name of our “Elf on the Shelf,” has definitely added to the fun and spirit over the last several years. WHAT KIND OF RESOLUTIONS DO YOU HAVE AS WE ENTER THE NEW YEAR AND A NEW DECADE? My resolutions are the predictable ones- losing a few pounds, exercising more consistently, eating healthier and volunteering more. As I look out over the next decade, my biggest resolution is to embrace and enjoy the next chapters in life with our boys becoming adults, our nest becoming empty and celebrating life with family and friends. It’s hard to believe that Y2K seems like yesterday, not 20 years ago.

built from the traditions that I took from my childhood and have carried over to my family. For me, watching my children experience that joy is what makes this season so magical. I can remember how it felt to drive around the Plaza and Candy Cane Lane to look at holiday lights with my family crammed in the family station wagon, listening to Bing Crosby and trying not to spill the hot chocolate that we brought in the car from home. The smell of a burnt match still brings me right back to the lighting of the advent wreath each morning in elementary school. We all loved that it gave us a good 10 minutes of time out of class. However, for me, decorating the tree was my favorite Christmas tradition. My mom let all 10 of us kids “help” her decorate, and let me tell you, that tree was quite a sight. With tinsel clumped together everywhere and several ornaments hanging within a few inches of each other, it was not the prettiest of trees to anyone outside of our family, but to me,

THERE CAN NEVER BE TOO MANY PEOPLE TO LOVE A KID. It’s a theme that has carried Eric and Amy MacEwen through their family’s foster

ing respite care or how to become a foster

care and adoption journey. That journey has involved fostering multiple placements and

adopting two different sibling groups in addition to adopting a daughter from China.

decided to adopt from China. After bringing their daughter home, they began to get involved in an adoption group at their church. It was there that they heard of the need for foster families. When presented with the need for such families, it didn’t take long for them to decide it was the next step for their family. With a daughter from China, two African-American sons and three Hispanic children, the MacEwens are truly a multi-cultural family. Amy says they have made a family commitment to enjoy learning about all their different cultures. Everyone goes to Chinese New Year, Day of the Dead and Juneteenth festivities to support the respective family members. It also gives the family a unique position to be leaders in a multi-cultural church and relate to members of the congregation. While several of their placements have been reunited with their parents, the MacEwens are still offering support to some of these families. In fact, they have built such a relationship with these kids and their parents that the children still routinely frequent the MacEwen home. The MacEwens provide mentoring to the parents, babysitting and taking the children to activities. “A lot of parents out there need someone to come alongside them,” Amy says. The experience has been life-changing not only for Eric and Amy as foster parents, but it’s also changed the perspective of their biological children. “They have learned to see the world differently and to see that not all kids start out life the same way,” Amy says. “They are compassionate toward people who are different or who don’t fit in the same or who are going through tough times.” Three years ago, Nick and Katie Welch had some friends who had a foster care placement. They had both always felt they should foster or adopt, but it was then they saw the opportunity to actually step up and get involved. “There is such a need for safe families in Kansas City who can step in when parents are getting healing, and we feel that was a ministry our family can do together,” Katie says. For the last two years they have had the same placement of a sibling group of three, and their two biological children have been instrumental to the success they have had as a foster family. “It’s opened their eyes to the reality of life outside of their home…to bring in kids who have a completely different background has expanded their worldview and given them a more diverse way to look at life,” Katie says.

Welch family

Amy and Katie say there are multiple misconceptions about foster care. Katie says one of the biggest misconceptions is that the goal of these situations is adoption. In reality, the goal of foster care is reunification with the parents. “The goal is to keep the kids safe and offer them growth and healing while their parents do the same,” Katie says. “The happiest ending isn’t always adoption. The happiest ending is being with the biological parents in a safe and healthy environment.” Something foster parents hear often from others is that others feel they could never be a foster parent because it would be too hard to allow the children go back home. “None of the children asked to be in this position, and this is the worst time of their life for most of them,” Amy says. “If we can make it less hard and more secure during this time of their lives, then it’s worth any discomfort to us as adults. The child isn’t choosing to be in this situation, so we shouldn’t choose not to help because it’s too hard for us.” Amy says it’s best not to ask foster parents about the children’s specific story and situation. In many cases they can’t share the details, and it’s really the child’s story to tell. Amy also says it’s best not to tell foster children they are lucky to have their foster parents because the children don’t always see it that way given what they have been through. Amy and Katie say foster families are always in need of someone to bring them a meal, help with laundry, mow the lawn, assist with home repairs and the like. Katie encourages others to take the initiative to do those things for the family because they often won’t ask themselves. Providing supplies such as beds, cribs, toys and clothes is also a blessing to foster families. If one isn’t ready to become a foster parent but would like to get a bit more involved, there is a big need for respite care providers who can be a support to foster parents. Amy says this a great way for one to gain exposure into what being a foster parent would be like. While there are many difficulties in caring for a child who has experienced trauma, it also provides a deep sense of fulfillment for these families. “It’s very rewarding to have a kid who had been through a hard time trust you enough to come to you for something,” Amy says. Katie says she has learned to adapt, grow and change while providing healing. She says life should be full of serving others and doesn’t have to be comfortable. “Our experience has been so life changing I don’t think we could ever not do foster care because there is such a need,” Katie says. 18

Bringing Health Care Closer to Home LEE’S SUMMIT MEDICAL CENTER IS EXPANDING PEDIATRIC SERVICES ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON | PHOTOGRAPHY WILL PATTERSON

38

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | December 2019

Lee’s Summit Medical Center now offers a pediatric friendly emergency room, pediatric outpatient surgical care for various conditions, office-based pediatric procedures and pediatric neurology. The hospital also exceeds national benchmarks for readiness to treat pediatric patients based on the federal Emergency Medical Services for Children program. Additionally, the emergency room generally has short wait times. For pediatric patients needing more advanced care that is not yet offered in Lee’s Summit, the hospital partners with Overland Park Regional Medical Center for pediatric specialties, intensive care and inpatient care. The two hospitals are both a part of HCA Midwest Health and work to provide continuity of care between the facilities. “Lee’s Summit Medical Center has received

community physicians and parents alike,” McDonald says. “Pediatricians like that they can send their patients to a specialist within the community, and parents like that it’s a more convenient option.” Pediatrics isn’t the only specialty service Lee’s Summit Medical Center is expanding as its premises have included a few hardhat zones in recent years. At the beginning of 2018, the hospital opened an orthopedic and spine center after a construction project that added an additional floor to the hospital. In October of this year they added a new spine surgeon to offer new treatment options for the WHEN A CHILD HAS AN EMERGENCY OR NEEDS TO SEE A SPECIALIST,

Does diligence detract from a settlement? Most individuals who are facing a divorce or family law matter desire a settlement. There are few individuals who would actually want a trial or evidentiary hearing in their case. A trial or evidentiary hearing is almost always expensive from a financial perspective, can sometimes result in appeals (which can cost more money) and can also cause stress, anxiety, anguish and other emotions. At the same time, many think that being diligent and preparing their case for a trial or evidentiary hearing detracts for settlement. To settle, many individuals would prefer that their lawyers do little or no work on their matter. They think that the lawyer should just get the case done and not worry about being diligent. Obviously, if the case is entirely settled, there might not be much work that needs to be done when compared to a litigated divorce or family law matter. At the same time, even when there is an entire settlement out of the gates, there is still a basic amount of diligence and competence required, like getting essential documents and information needed to ensure the settlement agreement can be put into writing and to verify that the settlement is not unconscionable (so that it is approved by

the family court judge). But in many cases, there is not a comprehensive settlement that has been reached from the beginning. Instead, there is simply a desire to settle without an agreement on all issues. Some parties might agree on some of the items at issue, but to settle a divorce for example, there needs to be a settlement on all issues from property and debt division, child custody, child support, spousal support and attorneys’ fees and costs. Thus, if their lawyer obtains the financial records that they need to prepare their case, many are resistant. Since they want to settle, they do not wish to give to their attorney important items such as tax returns, paycheck stubs, deeds, vehicle titles, account statements and other important documents. If the value of a home or a business is in dispute, many may not want their attorney to be diligent by getting the value appraised. They may not want an appraisal because they want to settle. They may think that getting an appraisal can inflame the situation or cause the cost to increase needlessly. If there are other important witnesses in the case, they might not want depositions to take place in their case as well. The

thought, again, is that they want to settle. Therefore, they do not want their attorney to be diligent by setting depositions. The examples are really endless in terms of the ways a party might not want their attorney to be diligent in the name of settling the case. The problem for these parties, however, is that if the case does not settle, their lawyer will not be prepared for trial. It is true as well that peace can oftentimes only be obtained in some cases through ensuring the other party knows the other party’s lawyer is prepared for a trial if the case does not settle. While many parties might believe that diligence detracts to settlement, the truth is that being diligent can help the case settle. And if a settlement is not possible, for whatever reason, it ensures that all the eggs are not put in one basket. PARTING THOUGHTS

DI Y HOLIDAY W REATH PLACE CARDS ARTICLE AUDREY KUETHER

I’M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR UNIQUE WAYS TO UPDATE MY HOLIDAY TABLE DECOR TO LIVEN UP HOLIDAY DINNERS. Instead of the same table settings I’ve used in the past, I wanted to try something new—enter my DIY holiday wreath place cards. I love the look of simple modern wreaths, but what I love even more are miniature versions. After some quick shopping on Amazon (as well as in my holiday decor stash at home), I had everything I needed to make my wreaths.

Audrey THE SUPPLY LIST 1. Faux Greenery

| 2. Gold metal hoops (set of 10: 4-inch)

| 3. Pliers and gold wire or hot glue gun (not pictured) | 4. Craft/

baking twine | 5. Paper and pen or design software and printer | 6. Hole punch

STEPS 1. I started with a 4-inch metal hoop and sparkled greenery, which I pulled off the stems to make into smaller pieces. I originally thought it would be easier to use my pliers and gold wire to attach the greenery to the hoops, but I quickly realized that a glue gun is much easier. 2. After placing the greenery over the mini hoops where they looked good to me, I then hot-glued one line of glue to one side of the hoop and pressed one greenery strand to it until the glue dried. 3. Adding a little more hot glue to the backside secured the greenery in place. 4. Once I was happy with the placement, I moved on to the other side of the wreath. 5. I cut a strand of baking twine (approximately 5 to 6 inches), ran it through the punched hole and attached it to the hoop. How simple and cute is that? These DIY holiday wreath place cards will look classic and festive in any place setting. OhSoLovelyBlog.com 50
