It’s a New Year! (and what are we going to do about it?) IT’S 2020 AND I STILL AM PUZZLED ABOUT WHAT TO MAKE OF IT. On a certain level I am surprised that I even made it to the third decade of the 21st century! I guess “Dr. Strangelove” really was a figment of Stanley Kubrick’s, Terry Southern’s and Peter George’s overwrought imagination… or maybe it could have

Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife I n st i t u t e
ARTICLE RUTH DOVER
SAVING MARINE MAMMALS IS GOOD FOR THE EARTH AND FOR THE SOUL!
IT ALL STARTED WITH THE DREAM OF A 5-YEAR-OLD BOY LIVING IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. He wanted to save animals and he loved the water! Sam was also a smart, curious and adventurous kid with an easy smile and gregarious laugh. As Sam grew up so did his passion for making a difference and his love of life. He worked hard to create a career where his work was his play and his play was his work. Sam has been practicing marine mammal veterinary medicine for 31 years and he has built a successful international veterinary consulting practice specializing in marine mammal medicine and endoscopy/laparoscopy. He is also the founder of a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting conservation through marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, research and education to promote ocean and human health. Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI, pronounced “sim-wee”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded on the guiding principal of making a difference in marine ecology. CIMWI is committed to rescuing and rehabilitating marine wildlife affected by natural and unnatural causes as well as engaging in related research and education. Marine wildlife is a key indicator of the health of the marine ecosystem and CIMWI is dedicated to the

How To Help A Stranded Marine Mammal If you encounter a marine mammal that is sick, injured, malnourished, entangled, deceased or oiled, please follow these steps: 1. DO NOT TOUCH! Do not touch, feed, harass, cover, pour water on, coax/ drag/push into the water or out of the surf zone, allow dogs near or take selfies with the animal. These are wild animals and they may bite! 2. OBSERVE ANIMAL Observe the animal from a minimum of 50 feet. Keep people and pets away from the stranded animal. Note the animal’s physical characteristics and condition. 3. DETERMINE LOCATION Determine the exact location of the animal. Be as accurate as possible and note any landmarks so CIMWI’s rescue team can easily find the animal. 4. CALL HOTLINE 805.567.1505 Call the CIMWI Rescue Hotline at 805.567.1505 for stranded marine mammals in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Provide your name, phone number, specific information about the animal and its location. To learn more about Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) and how you can get involved, visit CIMWI.org.

Oa ks C h r i s t i a n D o m i n at e s as E d u c at i o n a l Va n g ua r d OAKS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR, LOOKING BACK ON EXTRAORDINARY GROWTH AND ACCOMPLISHMENT IN JUST TWO DECADES. Early on the school established itself as an athletic powerhouse, winning five CIF championships in 2003 and kicking off a multi-year winning streak. But their artistic and academic accomplishments are also impressive, with numerous local and national artistic awards and honors for performing and visual arts and graduates consistently admitted to top-tier universities each year. Illustrious achievements aside, the school is not resting on its laurels. This is a remarkable year as Oaks Christian continues to dominate as an educational vanguard with the addition of residential boarding, a modern IDEA lab and three elite institutes that rival college-level programs. The new residential life building will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour with local dignitaries, media and the community on January 16, right before the schoolwide admissions information night for prospective families. In August, 40 students made history as the very first residents of the new OCS residential boarding facility, a state-of-the-art dorm that will eventually house 68 international and domestic students. In this inaugural year, the program welcomed students from Indonesia, China, Ghana, Vietnam and locally from Orange County. Move-in day was the culmination of a vision three years in the planning and spearheaded by OCS Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Kris Thabit. Thabit, an original OCS board member, was also instrumental 20 years ago in finding the present location for the main OCS campus. The OCS residential program makes Oaks Christian one of the few national Christian secondary schools to offer both a day and boarding option. Indeed, the building with three modern kitchens, fitness room, lounge areas, computer study areas and dorm rooms that rival and even surpass that of universities, does impress. Included are gender-specific dormitory floors, a high-tech security system, movie and game rooms and a chapel. But beyond the bells and whistles, the residential boarding program provides a unique opportunity for Oaks Christian to live out its mission. 30

EASE BACK PAIN WITH BALLOON KYPHOSPLASTY
DR. ERIK SPAYDE OF ST. CHARLES SPINE INSTITUTE IS A RESIDENT EXPERT IN TREATING VARIOUS BACK CONDITIONS, PERFORMING SPECIALTY TREATMENTS SUCH AS KYPHOPLASTY FOR OVER 14 YEARS. Balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive treatment that can repair spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis, falls, cancer or benign lesions. Orthopaedic balloons are used to lift the fractured bone and return it to the correct position. A spinal fracture, also known as a vertebral compression fracture, occurs when one of the bones of the spinal column weakens and collapses. Spinal fractures tend to be painful and, if left untreated, can adversely affect overall health and well-being. Performed under local anesthesia and mild sedation, the procedure typically takes less than an hour and is performed as an outpatient procedure. The procedure consists of the following: A small instrument is used to create a pathway into the fractured bone and a little orthopaedic balloon is guided through the instrument into the vertebra; the incision site is approximately 1 Dr. Erik C. Spayde
cm in length. Next, the balloon is carefully inflated in an attempt to raise the collapsed vertebra and return it to its normal position. Once the vertebra is in the correct position, the balloon is deflated and removed. This process creates a cavity within the vertebral body. The cavity is filled with a special cement to support the surrounding bone and prevent further collapse. The cement forms an internal cast that holds the vertebra in place. Balloon kyphoplasty can make it easier for patients to return to everyday activities, such as walking, bending or lifting with significantly less pain than they had prior to the procedure. If you have back pain, call Dr. Spayde at St. Charles Spine Institute to see if you are a candidate for this minimally invasive procedure. St. Charles Spine Institute is located at 558 St. Charles Drive, Suite 200 in Thousand Oaks. Call 805.379.2322 or visit StCharlesSpine.com.

SERVING THE CONEJO VALLEY FOR MORE THAN 51 YEARS, LOS ROBLES HEALTH SYSTEM IS STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY, AN EXPANDED FACILITY, AN INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM SLATED WITH A SUMMER START, AND MUCH MORE. Some notable firsts in 2019 at Los Robles include the Comaneci used for the treatment of life-threatening brain aneurysm and the MitraClip™ G4 Device for minimally invasive treatment for patients suffering from mitral valve regurgitation—a leaky heart valve. In late July 2019, stroke specialist Dr. Asif Taqi used the Comaneci Embolization Assist Device to treat 53-year-old Maria Cram’s aneurysm and to prevent a second rupture that could potentially have taken Cram’s life at Los Robles Hospital. It was the first time the device—approved by the FDA in May—was used in the United States. Another first at Los Robles was the use of the MitraClip G4 in early November. The structural heart team—Dr. Vishva Dev, Dr. Gregory Fontana, Dr. Andrew Ghobriel and Dr. Saibal Kar, a lead investigator of the clinical trials which led to the approval of this therapy in the U.S., who recently moved to this community—treated two patients with severe mitral regurgitation. Recently approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), these patients are the first in the world to be treated with this minimally invasive valve repair device which reduces the risk of heart failure. Looking toward firsts in 2020, Los Robles will be the first hospital in Southern California to have the Monarch Robotic Endoscopy technology in its robotic surgery program. The Monarch is used to view and navigate inside of patients’ lungs to obtain a tissue sample for biopsy. The technology allows physicians to reach further into the periphery of the lung into hard to reach nodules and allows doctors to diagnose suspected lung cancer earlier and more accurately, resulting pediatric surgeon. WESTLAKE BODY CONTOURING HELPS CLIENTS ACHIEVE THEIR BEST SELF WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART RED AND NEAR INFRARED (NIR) LIGHT TREATMENTS THAT REDUCE FAT CELLS AND DECREASE PAIN TO HELP PEOPLE FEEL AND LOOK THEIR BEST. The 25-minute noninvasive treatment helps ease chronic pain from surgery, joint or autoimmune issues that cause inflammation and discomfort in the body. “LED pads are applied to the area that’s painful, such as an inflamed knee,” says Dr. Dianne Lalena Sandberg, noting the procedure is the same used for people wanting to lose fat. The LED red and NIR diodes penetrate the mitochondria of the cell and decrease inflammation that causes pain, she explains. Postsurgical wounds also heal faster under the light, as it increases the flow of collagen and elastin to the incision. SPACE AGE TECHNOLOGY The Contour Light was originally researched by NASA to heal wounds before it was discovered that the technology also liquefies fat and opens fat cells, allowing fat to exit and shrink the cells. Fat burning is accelerated, metabolism speeds up and fat is flushed through the lymphatic system to be broken down and eliminated from the body. In addition, collagen and elastin are increased, tightening skin and creating a slimmer appearance. A Chiropractic Doctor for 19 years with a degree from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, Dr. Dianne established Westlake Body Contouring in 2015. She initially focused on the light thera-

PARTING THOUGHTS
best wishes for
health & wellness
this new year
IT’S THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, AND IF YOU’RE LIKE ME, YOU’LL FIND IT’S A GOOD TIME TO REFLECT ON THE PAST YEAR—WHAT WORKED AND WHAT DIDN’T. The next thing I look at is whether there is anything I need to clear off my plate. Rebook your appointments and record your family and friends’ birthdays. As we’re regrouping in the new year, it’s helpful to write out lists of goals, including personal, business and health goals. Make sure checkups are part of your routine. Some of the most important ones include eyes, ears and teeth; then there’s mammograms, gynecologists, colonoscopies and heart checkups. Another important consideration is examining if some of us carry our own negative luggage; if so, maybe it’s as easy as forgiving someone, so you can release the toxins of keeping it inside. When you forgive, it’s not really for the person you’re angry with, it’s for yourself. This year let’s make sure we put ourselves on the top of the list. Another thing that is important is asking for help. Our partners, family and close friends know us so well, but we do need to ask for their help, as they are not mind readers. Learn to ask for what you need, but in return learn to be a good listener and think about what others might need also. I also really believe in therapy. There are many forms—just getting your feelings out is so important. Try something new like meditation, yoga or a mindfulness class, or join a gym or hire a coach. Maybe find a buddy to walk or work out with to enrich your health and wellness. Ask yourself what you are doing to invest in yourself. Let’s make this a Happy New Year and a Happy You!

ill Building Executive Function or Auditory Processing Skills Give Your Child the Competitive Edge You’re Hoping for in 2020? In today’s world, being “very good” isn’t always good enough. And when you think about your school age child, you want them to be at the top of their class.
But what more can a parent do?
There’s an “invisible” set of skills that the very best learners have honed to perfection. These skills give them a very real and defined competitive advantage over their peers.
The tragedy is, almost no one talks about these skills. Schools and tutors don’t work on these skills. Most of the time, they don’t even understand these skills.
For over 35 years, Stowell Learning Center has helped students not just to be GOOD, but to be the BEST that they can be. HOW? We focus on strengthening the skills that make up the ability to learn, to learn quickly, & to learn easily.
Through proprietary, well-researched individualized exercises, we zero in on the exact skills that need work... and then
transforms them...permanently.
Who is this a match for? • • • • •
Bright students who want to be at their competitive best Bright students who do well in school, but are working way too hard for the grades they get Bright under-achieving students who should be doing better but somehow aren’t Students with diagnostic labels such as learning disabled, Dyslexic, or ADHD Students who are in tutoring, but find tutoring isn’t changing their abilities… it’s just a permanent crutch • Bright students that appear to be lazy or unmotivated • Bright students who have always struggled in school • Any student that just wants learning to be easier
