DECEMBER 2019 PUBLISHER
Kathy Slemp | kslemp@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR
The magic of tradition during the holidays DECEMBER IN TULSA IS SPECIAL. It’s the beginning of winter and a month full of celebrations with the sharing of gifts. It’s also the month we look back fondly over the past year and kiss the memories of yesterday goodbye in preparation for the new year. In anticipation of Christmas, many parents take their holiday-dressed children to see Santa Claus at his Tulsa outpost in Utica Square. This year will be no different. But,

take notice … the lines get longer later in the month and the weather gets colder, so I recommend visiting Santa early. If you do end up waiting in a long line, you can make the wait festive with hot cocoa, coffee and cookies from Starbucks and Queenies which are located just steps away from Santa’s house. If marching bands, floats and prancing horses are more your style, the 93rd annual Tulsa Christmas Parade will be held downtown in the Cathedral District, Saturday, December 14 at 1 p.m. It starts at First Presbyterian Church at 7th and Boston Avenue and travels north to the Performing Arts Center looping around to finish at 4th and Boulder. The parade is a Tulsa tradition since 1926. For more sparkling lights and an extremely festive atmosphere, visiting Roosevelt's Gastropub on Cherry Street is a holiday must with more than 50,000 Christmas orna-

Playtime today. Strong skills tomorrow.
At Holland Hall, students as young as 3 years old learn the importance of the arts. They paint, draw, sing and sculpt. And they have opportunities to meet and work with world-famous artists-inresidence every year for ARTworks. The school is commited to offering a wide range of arts because each student has a creative niche to fill, and we want them to find it at Holland Hall. From a study of major artists in the primary school to playwriting, photography and dance in the upper school, we know the arts stimulate critical thinking skills and problem-solving capabilities. And we believe that by facilitating meaningful self-expression, we empower our students to express ideas more clearly and forcefully.

A Christmas Tradition TULSA BALLET CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF "THE NUTCRACKER" ARTICLE LOUANN BUHLINGER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY TULSA BALLET
Tulsa Ballet celebrates its 50th anniversary of "The Nutcracker" in December - a holiday classic.

The Mouse King and the Nutcracker battle in Tulsa Ballet's "The Nutcracker."
The performance is set in 1920s Paris with Tchaikovsky’s music played by a live orchestra. In observance of the 50th anniversary, Tulsa Ballet has created an alumni group of dancers and children who will be honored at a special dinner later this month and attend a performance of “The Nutcracker” together. One of the most notable alumni is American actress and singer Kristen Chenoweth who danced as a bunny in “The Nutcracker” years ago. “I was in the very first performance of Tulsa Civic Ballet in 1956. We (a corps de ballet made up of students from four different Tulsa ballet schools) danced the Snow Scene from “The Nutcracker,” led by Moscelyne Larkin and Roman Jasinski,” said Georgia Jones Snoke – president emerita, historian and former dancer of Tulsa Ballet. Clara as an adult in Tulsa Ballet's version of "The Nutcracker."
“Fast forward a generation and our daughter Heather, at age four, became the first “Baby Angel” in “The Nutcracker.” Thereafter, she and her sister Kelsi danced just about every role, with Kelsi also dancing “Clara” in Tulsa and in Colorado Springs.” “I danced in the first full-length performance of The Nutcracker in 1969. I was in Land of the Snow and in the Coda and had the privilege of Jasinski choreographing the Arabian on me, Georgia Snoke, Claudia Kennon and Bob Cockle. That version ran for the entire 30-plus years of Jasinski’s “The Nutcracker,” and it was absolutely beautiful,” said Cheryl Forrest, president emerita, chief historian and former dancer with Tulsa Ballet. “Many years later, when married with children, I was able to enjoy watching my daughter Stephanie as Mouse on Cheese for two years, Mouse for two years, and Gun Soldier for two years.” “The Nutcracker represents the midway point in the

YOU KNOW THAT FEELING YOU GET WHEN YOU STEP OFF THE PLANE INTO A NEW DESTINATION? It’s a sense of wonder and excitement about what is to come. It opens your mind and your senses for new experiences. When you gift the gift of travel, you’re offering more than just another tie or iPhone - you’re offering experiences that will last a lifetime. But what if you’d like to purchase travel for yourself and a family member who has limited mobility or uses an alternative form of communication? There are a host of options to choose from.
World Travel’s Marti Alexander says, “There are many different locations and forms of travel that cater to people with unique needs. In fact, all cruise ships sailing in U.S. waters are compliant with the ADA which allows for easy access to staterooms and around the ship.” She highly recommends Symphony of the Seas cruise ship by Royal Caribbean. There are accessible cabins with wide staterooms and ramped thresholds, and roll-in showers and turning spaces. The cruise ship’s public areas are also accessible with automatic doors, lifts for pools and whirlpools, and lowered playing tables at the casinos. The theaters provide listening devices and there is Braille/tactile signage in the public spaces. The ship is currently based in Miami and sails to the eastern Caribbean including Sint Maarten, Saint Kitts and Puerto Rico. Alexander also recommends CocoCay Island in the Bahamas which is a beautiful island that is largely accessible with beach chair lifts for the Oasis Lagoon freshwater pool, the wave pool in the Thrill Waterpark and the infinity pool at the Coco Beach Club. There are hardscape paths to every cabana as well.
Night shot of the largest cruise ship in the world, Royal Caribbean's The Symphony Of The Seas.
A sandy beach at CocoCay with colorful rainbow umbrellas on a sunny day.
If mountains are more to your liking, Alexander recommends the Canadian Rockies by rail. The Rocky Mountaineer provides wheelchair access and transportation by golf cart at most stops. Scenic tours of Lake Louise, Banff and Jasper National Park make this an unforgettable journey. The Vatican Museum in Rome, Italy, is easily accessible and provide lifts so that everyone has access to the Cupola to admire the magnificent frescoes of the Sistine Chapel famously designed and developed by Michelangelo. Alexander also recommends stops at the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. Toni Gregg of Spears Travel has found that Celebrity Cruises and Tauck Tours are very receptive to people with disabilities. Carol Faversham of Spears added that a company called Special Needs Group can provide cruise Cruise ship Symphony of the Seas in Miami, Florida.

First Call Medical Staffing provides travel support to people needing minimal assistance (companions) to full assistance (skilled care). The care we provide runs the gamut from companionship to mobility assistance, medication management, feeding tubes and more.” In fact, First Call has sent caregivers and nurses to travel by private jet, commercial airlines, car and cruise ships all over the world. Holidays Can be a Difficult Time for Divorced Parents
For many divorced families, the holiday season can be an emotionally and logistically challenging experience. Co-parenting already comes with difficulties, and sharing parenting time during the holidays can pose unique stresses for parents. However, holidays can also be an occasion for parents to demonstrate that their love for their kids is more important than issues with an ex-partner. This can be incredibly important for strengthening the psychological support for children who live in separate homes after divorce. There are several tips that people who are dealing with shared parenting time can keep in mind in order to create a more positive holiday environment. Even after ugly divorces, exes can have a successful co-parenting relationship that fully respects each parent’s relationship with the children. It is important for the parents to be flexible and
open-minded. While parenting time may be outlined in a divorce court order, family schedules often require flexibility during the holidays. When the parents can trust each other to make agreements, it can be possible to make plans to switch days and allow the kids to see each partner’s extended family. Agreeing in writing can help to make sure that the parenting time shift is formalized. It’s also important for each parent to be kind to each other about problems that might arise during the holidays and continue to work for a positive relationship. A parent heading for divorce may retain a family law attorney who can represent their interests in court. FORSYTHIA Named after William Forsyth, a Scottish botanist, Forsythia is an early spring flowering shrub often found in gardens and parks. Forsythia are well-known for their resilience and tenacity as much as the bright, cheery yellow of the branches’ blooms.
RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.
TWEEDIA This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slipper-shaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait—in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.
NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.
KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring.
